For that matter, is there a such thing as "real"?

Ya, I was just talking to some industry guys about that. I mean Max Payne and Serious Sam sounded like ass on paper, but I loved both of them. It's all in the delivery. Sorta like writing a book. I mean, who would want to read a book about a kid growing up in a catholic school in Ireland worried about going to hell: AKA Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

Brian Crecente

I know some game producers, and it amazes me how (the good ones) can see potential in a game from a 2 minute pitch.

I remember one of them describing Company of Heroes to me a couple years ago, and I thought "WW2 RTS? Coming out in 2006?... You've got to be kidding me. Nobody's going to play that."

IMHO, The quality of the game is 99% developer and publisher talent. It almost doesn't matter what it's "about". That's why Nintendo has fantastic first party games, even though the premises are pretty lame (mascot racing, mascot sports, mascot party games...)

And yes, some publishers have very good talent that affect the outcome of the game.

FlapjacksAreTasty

Why do video game companies even bother printing two-sentence long information tidbits about their games? I am pretty sure every single game every created would sound like a fucking snooze-fest if reduced to two senteces.

Gears of War
Developed by Epic Games, Gears of War is a gritty pseudo-third-person shooter where you shoot people that look like zombies but are called Locusts. Due in Q4 2006.

World of Warcraft
An incredibly detailed and stylized massively multiplayer online role playing game, which is Geek-ese for "Your girlfriend will leave you for the yard-man." Expect her post-it note on the refridgerator in time for Valentine's Day 2007.

Metal Gear Solid
A stunning film noir action/adventure game where you take on an army of clones of your dead father who are led by your half-cloned, half-dead half-brother who poses as your half-Gary Busey, half-Dolph Lundgren mentor. Called ""best PlayStation game ever" by developers.

Super Mario 64
Developed by Nintendo, a comical yet brutal romp through the Mushroom Kingdom, where you can step on anthropomorphic mushrooms, oversized turtles, and collect stars.

Chrono Trigger
A vaguely humorous, impossible-to-classify role playing game where you travel through time and fight a massive porcupine who was born in the year 65,000,000 BC who eats your planet.
