Clovia, you are the only voice in this entire thread that is making sense. Aestheticity's online girl-collecting is a little eerie, also.

In terms of online games, then it is definitely true that the majority of that number are casual women gamers (Popcap, etc). However, the article (and we are all taught in school that you should always look at data with a critical eye!) is definitely only for online games. So not only does that discount pre-installed Spider Solitaire and other casual games women play, it also eliminates a large number of 'real' games that do not have an online component, or games whose online component is not crucial to gameplay.

So how many chicks dig Zelda? The world may never know.

Well clovia, I do regret that you feel that way. Most of the commentators here are only going by their own experience and as we all know, people tend to have different experiences. There is surely someone out there who would honestly proclaim the enjoyable character of femme online gamers.

A majority of the ones I know are simply girls who like playing games and want nothing more than to engage in a good multiplayer session without being hit on or harassed. To me, the suggestion that they are all bull-ugly lesbian bitches sounds fairly ridiculous. Concerning those irritating ladies who wear their clits on the outside and make you eat their estrogen, I dismiss it as a reaction to video games being so male-saturated until recently. When girls first break into something traditionally in the province of boys, they can be fierce about it.

I appreciate the South Park reference. Few characters in fiction are as quotable as Mr. Garrison.

I've been to E3 a couple of times, and the number of girls there increased dramatically from the last year to this year. Probably three times as many girls, that I saw, but I only went to one day last year and I worked all four this year. If most gamers are female why do I never see women in an EB games or online. Cause most of those "gamers" are females who play Zuma or some shit or stay at home moms who play polar bear bowling. My aunt is a stay at home mom and I've seen her playing those cheesy Wild Tanget games that come preloaded on Dell computers for hours. Now if you include those then of course theres more female gamers, but for "real games" by which I mean games that have serious production values and/or some depth to it then I doubt women would show much on the radar.

I know one girl in real life who plays games. Proper ones like me. She's fairly fit, slim, normal. Likes comics too, which I don't. Regarded by her friends as ditzy. One of the few who owns her own car and works rather than wastes time in mediocre and interchangeable uni courses.

I've met quite a few on Xbox live. I made a habit of collecting them on my friendslist just to prove they exist, which was a thoroughly successful endeavour once you concentrate on it. Most of them are giant bitches and seem to be members of the same handful of monolithic women-only clans, who always have names that shove femininity in your face and use lots of pink in their avatars. They spend more time messaging and voicechatting than playing, and harass you from the moment you sign in. If you submit to their lobby invites and wait for them to get round to playing, they'll tease and talk sluttish a lot, which is fun for the first 2 minutes ever and is old for the rest of eternity. They talk aboust myspace a lot. I don't have one.

There are a rare few that just play the damn game without the pink and the chatter. They always have deep voices and utterly kick your ass. I picture them as dykes, to be honest. Could be wrong. Don't care; they're much the preferable sort even if they do completely emasculate you ingame.

Outside Live, I've seen similar archetypes in things like Wolfenstein, Quake, Tribes, etc. Any established server that you join will have it's one or two regular girl players that other regulars, being losers, venerate like goddesses and tolerate ridiculous behaviour from. They'll spam chat, and take every opportunity to slip something girly into it just so you don't forget what sex they are. They'll also be on associated forums with gratis admin powers, as ingame, which they'll use to have good old strops with when they're in a bad mood. Then you've got your other sort who are almost anonymous and talk maybe once a month. You'll only know they're women because either you'll play alongside them so long (many months) you pick up the scant cues from what little they talk, or they eventually just say so and swap IM details, where they usually turn out to be foreign.

This is in my chosen areas of online gaming, which includes FPS and RTS but not MMOG or shit like Animal Crossing. It's different with those.

I would say that reasonable, nice girls are an extreme rarity in proper online games. Unreasonable, unpleasant, shrill ones aren't exactly ten a penny but they're the kind you're likely to see if you see any. I wouldn't sweat it if you don't. Not missing much.

It's interesting how posts anywhere within the vicinity of gender always elicit an avalanche of comments on Kotaku. Be that as it may, topics related to the sexes might transcend any context they're discussed in anyway, gaming or otherwise. Some subject matter is just primal in nature.

As a word of caution, I would advise horny male gamers to exert prudence if female counterparts are open to meeting you offline (this is based on the assumption that you're not an idiot). Having been around female gamers my whole life and dating them regularly, I'll tell you that just because a woman is as into games as you are does not make her the perfect personality for you to spend time with. So unless you want to accumulate an archive of horror stories comparable to my own, be selective.

I really think that online games could benefit from more women. Not for the obvious reason, as I am a guy, but they tend to be kinder and more rational. I can't tell you how many of my matches on any online game have ended in the slinging of racial slurs and barely coherent abbreviations, most of them by hyperactive 12 year old boys. I wondered about the validity of the survey myself. I think it defined online games in a way I wouldn't, including casual games, cell phone games, online versions of poker/majong/bridge, and such things. When it comes to hard core, serious game players who put in a substantial amount of times playing games on consoles, PCs, and hand-held systems, I think men outnumber women pretty substantially still as the ladies seem to be concentrated in things like Second Life and sims and some of the role playing games right now. But the number of female players is growing, as you can see by the number of women posting here (and planning Florian's barbecue, all in fun, naturally; although I'd watch my step in any dark alleys if I were you for a while, Flo).

I look forward to the day when anyone, any sex, any age can play video games of their preferred type without being an anomoly.

On SOCOM 2 my clan leader's wife played. She sucked at first, but she played more than anyone else, and became one of our best players. Then she took over as leader. We also had a couple Boyfriend/Girlfriend combos.

With regards to the picture, even I knew that was one of the Halos, and I've only played Halo 2 twice. For about ten minutes. Am I the only person who thinks she's sitting way too close to the television set?

Also, I'll agree that a large percentage of "gaming girls" are in Second Life... but Second Life isn't really a "game" and I'm pretty sure that SL's stats aren't being used in these "girl gamer" stats. Even if they were, it would be such an outlier that they couldn't be used. (At least, I think that's what the stats class in college taught me.)

Where once we casually discussed in guild chat bitch fucking and the worldwide conspiracy against women, now we pretend to have "feelings" because we are cuckolded for being "insensitive."

I do think it is misleading when they include Flash games and even non-N-Gage cell phone games in with consoles and handhelds. Do they count the mind games my wife plays via email?

On the one hand, I spend a TON on gaming every month, but on the other hand, I don't game for 31 hours a week either. (14 console hours plus 17 handheld hours.)

Now, seriously, everybody knows that girls only play Bejeweled and Second Live with some exceptions that play normal games so they can't be really counted as gamers. Oh, and I hope that someday there are more women gamers then men, it would certainly be nice since you could call them to play some deathmatch if you know what i mean. ;P

Girls generally avoid games because they're cultured to do so. They play a lot of those free online games, and even pay for some of them, because they can say they're primarily just toiling in some sort of distraction. Then there are the MMORPGs, but they're not necessarily doing quests or anything -- it's a weird social networking experiment disguised as a game. They're not playing those games. They're living lives they can't obtain with their own effort.

WAIT, there are girls who actually play games. They're actually pretty decent at them, but then the girls are usually antisocial and bitchy.

You can't win either way. I'm tired of this being a male-oriented hobby, but the antisocial ones make me think that chicks should stay away from my controllers.

As sexist as this may come off as, I think that the "there are more girl gamers then guys" things are WAY misleading.

Im sorry, but about 70% of the female gaming population currently resides in Second Life and other games of similar female attraction.

Sure its games, but its like saying there are more female workers in x city. When infact most are just working on some street corner or under some overpass.
