Like any gigantic, sprawling, metropolis, yes it can be pretty damn hard to see stars in Tokyo although a dvd of stars on a tv screen would probably be a lot prettier than looking at them on a little psp screen. My lovely girlfriend bought me a homestar for my last birthday after I wigged out over them in a department store... sooo pretty. They are a little expensive (20000 yen last I checked) but If you get as excited by looking up at the stars as I do, I highly reccomend one.. just don't expect the projection to be 100% realistic.

kamu

Actually, if this tied into the PSP GPS, I think it would be a cool little application. At that point it would be very similar to the Celestron SkyScope.

The PSP screen would show what you should be seeing in the night sky based on your geographical location and direction according to the GPS. You could then use the d-pad to select objects and get more information.

Kdawg

The problem is, for beginners, what you're looking for is the Celestron SkyScope. Looks like a camcorder; select the star you're looking for on the side screen, and then look through the eyepiece to find what you're looking for; it'll give you arrows to get you in the right direction.

That kind of telescope-and-locator planetarium in a box serves the low end much better than stuff like this...

And for everyone else, there's your laptop. Because inevitably, you're going to pick up a telescope, and want to either record what you see through it, or get it to track stuff in the sky.

I suppose there's a 'middle range' between them - but I'm unconvinced that this is a good fit. You'd want to be able to find/locate the stuff in the sky you want to be watching, etc., and load in lots of data that probably isn't included in the built in stuff. It won't have, for example, all of the satellite and space junk data - and you'd want that when you're scanning the sky and see something odd.

gblock

I've had "planetarium" software before, found it basically useless. But I suppose if the light pollution is as bad in Japan as it is here (in LA, anyway)... this may be an otaku's only chance to see stars... aside from his daily beatings in the schoolyard.

FlapjacksAreTasty

So, let me get this straight, you take your psp outside, scan the screen for what you want to see, and then look up in the sky and see...

Nothing...because your eyes have adjusted to the screen. Then, by the time you see the stars, you've forgotten what you're looking for, and have to look at your PSP again.
