@Dustin Dong: By little guys I mean the mom and pop stores. Gamestop is doing this so as not to lose sales, but also to force publishers to take punitive action on the independent retailers who broke the street date first and also (coincidentally, I'm sure) compete with Gamestop. And if you think publishers are going to side with independent retailers, then... well, I guess I could most charitably say... I hope you're right. #gamestop

buddhathing

Here's my two cents. I own a small mom and pop game store. MW2 brought in 10X as much revenue the store has ever done in a single game. Why? Because I sold it 1 day early. I could have had it last Thursday. Do you think I could have sold anywhere near as many copies without having it early? No. But I had to sign a piece of paper from the distributors saying I couldn't pick it up until Monday, even though they had it 5 days early. I can't afford to pick up hundreds if not Thousands of copies of one game. Although Gamestop can. The only jump I have on gamestop is that we have all the old gaming systems...literally everything, and we have games early.

How many copies did I sell the actual day of release...about 5.....Because you can pick it up everywhere else. Plus all the crappy exclusive pre-order bonuses that they get too....why would you buy from someone else if you can get more for your money? Other than actually talking to someone who isn't a pimply faced kid at Gamestop who has always thought that the Nintendo 64 was the first video system ever.

If Gamestop now releases games early, What is the point?

Again, I was supposed to have AC2 and L4D2 on Thursday, now I don't get it till Monday morning...Why? Because my distributors are all scared of getting fined and whatnot because all the publishers are cracking down and in turn I pay the price because of Gamestop's crap. #gamestop

themadman123

@jbest73: that's the thing....games should move away from that. Developers try so hard into making games as big as movies or books that it results with games turning into movies with occasional audience input.
Asking for a way to turn a soliloquy into a gameplay element is like asking for a way to give music a pictoral meaning.

@Sobersean: You do realize that it's not one or the other even with respect to the point of there being a "why", right?

Your lowbrow hack and slashes are actually benefited by an creative structure that asks what it means to be a "lowbrow hack and slash". Creating something that better expresses on a visceral, emotional level, what it means to mindlessly gut orcs will result in a better game. It's still art, in that it's about expression of a particular feeling.

Also to answer your question:
"How many of the top movies of all time have been based on comics?" Um, not many. Not a one has managed to place on any critics Top 100 list that I can find, though, perhaps, maybe, The Dark Knight will end up there eventually. And if you're using movie grosses as your metric... 10 out of the top 100, more than half of which are sequels (outside of Spider Man, Batman and X-Men, there is only 300), and 15 or so out of the top 200 (more Batman and X-men related stuff, with the first Fantastic Four movie in there too). So not very many, and not with any real diversity. Comic books have certainly grown a lot since the release of The Watchmen, but they're really not fully "there" yet either. There aren't enough Sandmans and Mauses to provide the necessary diversity. #development

EolirinX
