To: Ash From: Crecente Re: Music, Can You Make It?! I took piano and trombone lessons when I was a kid. Neither stuck. I'm taking classical guitar lessons now with Tristan. We'll see how that goes. I ran into quite a few people at Penny Arcade Expo who told me that their work has recently started blocking Kotaku. All of the people I talked to were pretty confused about it because either visiting the site wasn't against their rules or it was actually part of their job. After doing a bit of digging I found they all seemed to have one thing in common: WebSense. WebSense is a company that provides a suite of web security and anti-spam programs to large companies including, among others, Microsoft. The way their web filtering works is that they classify web sites by category. Then a company can decide which categories they disallow from their work computers. So, for instance, if you don't want you employees surfing porn and gambling online while at work you just exclude those categories. Fantastic. But, what happens when a site is misidentified. You're screwed that's what happens, and apparently that happens a lot. I sent a blind email their way asking them to check into it, but without any of the particulars about why the site is being blocked I didn't think I stoond much chance. I was wrong. I received an email tonight saying we've been recategorized as as a forum or message board. Sure, I'd rather it be a news site, but heck of a lot better than what ever terrifying category we use to be in. If you know anyone who is being blocked make sure to have them email so I can try to gather more details.
