The Mega Man 9 invasion begins, and on the Nintendo Wii he's bringing backup! This week's Nintendo Wii update not only brings us the WiiWare version of Capcom's retro redux on the blue bomber (1,000 points), we also get the Sega Genesis classic Vectorman (800 points), which is also the story of a robot going up against evil robots, but this one can turn into a mechanical fish. More »

How dare you, Nintendo! How dare you release Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo (800 points) on the Wii Virtual Console on a holiday Monday when I wasn't paying attention? I could have been playing that all day long yesterday instead of...playing the other games I was playing all day long. I suppose in the long run it's just a day, but I cannot help but feel betrayed. I know, I'm such a drama king. For those of you sadly unaware, Super Mario RPG was the last Mario game for the SNES, developed by Square, and probably one of the best Mario experiences you're likely to have outside of a platformer. A very worthy purchase indeed. More »

It almost goes without saying, but Nintendo of Europe's managing director Laurent Fischer deeply regrets stating that "geeks and otaku" were the only people concerned about running out of space on their Nintendo Wii due to WiiWare and Virtual Console titles, comments that ticked off gamers and developers alike. Speaking to videogaming247, Fischer offered the following by way of apology. More »

Sometimes the VC Update press releases are more entertaining than the games themselves, especially when they are desperately scrabbling for some relevant comment for the opening hook.
It's a mad season for basketball lovers, but even the most hardcore hoops fan needs a break from the action this time of year. While they're a far cry from basketball, the latest additions to the Wii Shop Channel offer plenty of fast-moving fun and high-scoring thrills of their own.
It's Final Four time! Here's a couple of games that have nothing to do with that! I could so handle that gig. Cows do a lot of processing the food they eat into nourishing milk! While these games don't feature milk at all, they are just as wholesome and delicious! Gravy. Anyway, this week's VC releases are King's Knight for the NES (500 points), a vertical fantasy shooter by Square, and Powerball for the Genesis (800 points), the fantasy sport that combines football, rugby, and not basketball. Woot. More »

An alert Kotaku reader named Daniel was for some reason poking around over on Pokemon.com, where he discovered that the most voyeuristic of Pokemon games, Pokemon Snap - released just yesterday in Japan - would be coming to the North American Virtual Console this Monday, December 10th. Rejoice! I immediately got my copy of Snap for the Nintendo 64 in order to take a sexy photo of it for the article, but after I set it down for a moment I came back to find Rande had claimed it for his own, and every time I reached for it those talons would extend, as if daring me to take it from him. So instead I snapped him, which makes this story exactly the sort of snake eating its own tail, infinite mirror thing that gets my head going all dizzy. Anyway, Pokemon.com will have an exclusive wallpaper to mark the event on the 10th, so you'll have an excuse to go visit - unlike Daniel. More »

Ask and you shall receive! SNK Playmore today announces that several of their most popular NeoGeo arcade titles will be heading to the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console. This marks the first actual arcade gaming titles released on Nintendo's system, even if they did technically run on a console as well. Classic titles slated for the system include Fatal Fury, World Heroes, and Art of Fighting, with more titles expected to be announced in the months to come. The games will carry a hefty price tag of 900 Wii Points a pop, second only to N64 titles (at 1000 points a piece). I was reading comments from our Virtual Console update just this week and recall someone calling out Nintendo for not having NeoGeo titles for download. Well here you go, that guy. Grats! More »

Once again the Wii Virtual Console update press release writer struggles to write a compelling introduction based on the games being released this week, and fails. "The Virtual Console is like a box of chocolates: You never know which games have the tasty caramel filling and which ones have that pink-green creme inside." Of course the games have nothing to do with sweets at all - I suspect someone just caught Forest Gump before writing this and thought it would resonate with gamers everywhere. *sigh* Star Soldier for the NES (500 points) is the granddaddy of several awesome scrolling shooters, including Blazing Lazers where the Z stands for awesome...z. Dynamite Headdy for the Genesis (800 points) is a classic Treasure action/platformer where you play as a puppet who can kill enemies by shooting his head at them. Finally, the obligatory TurboGrafx title is Drop Off (600 points) is a combination of Bust-A-Move and Breakout where you brave five rounds (once a selling point, really!) of action to save your girlfriend from a demon. "Read on and savor the delicious centers of these classic treats." Shoot me. More »

Since the launch of the Wii, retro-craving gamers around the world have downloaded over 4.7 million games from the Virtual Console...more that 1,000 games an hour. Now Nintendo has announced that this Monday will see the release of the 100th classic game on their Wii Shop Channel, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link for the NES, otherwise known as the Zelda game I did not finish. The one where things got all side-scrolly and platformy, perhaps paving the way for the 3D Zelda titles of today. More »

While I am off today, I woke up early in a cold sweat, gripped in the fear that I wouldn't get to mention this week's VC console update, as my continued posting of it is what keeps the moon from crashing into the earth. What's better than playing old school games on the Nintendo Virtual Console? Not having to play it with the wiimote which (come on, admit it) doesn't really bring back the nostalgic memories of playing Alex Kidd on a console as ugly as your parents' old rattan couch. More »

This week's VC update for the Wii is all about bringing on the beat down, with three games revolving around hitting other people (or plants and animals) with various non-sexual parts of your body. This week's VC update has me really wishing that the Virtual Console releases were more like Xbox Live releases, where old games were souped up with multiplayer options and the like. Old games getting rereleased is nice and all, but what I wouldn't give to be able to play the NES classic Tecmo Bowl (500 points) head to head online against confused Madden fans. More »

I was almost positive that Nintendo would release The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time all by its lonesome this week, seeing as any other titles included with it would be completely lost in its glory, but surprise surprise, they went ahead and did it anyway. Bio-Hazard Battle for the Genesis and Chew Man Fu for the TurboGrafx16 join Link's first 3D adventure at the top of the VC console new list this week. More »

The Wii Virtual Console in Japan is set to add another two console selections to its lineup — the fighter friendly Neo Geo and the MSX. The Neo Geo is SNK's baby and home to King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Metal Slug, and various other masterpieces of the 2D gaming age. The MSX is of course Japan's early-80s attempt to standardize the world computer market. The effort didn't pan out despite brisk sales, but as a game platform it excelled, giving birth to such esteemed series as Metal Gear, Bomberman, Parodius, and Puyo Puyo. More »

What's New on the VC

This week on the VC update Nintendo pulls a classic NES hat trick, releasing three of the best-loved titles on the console in one fell swoop, without a Mario or a Zelda among them. First up is everyone's favorite pink ball of power suction, Kirby, in his console debut, Kirby's Adventure. For US gamers, this was the Kirby game that revealed his light red hue, as Kirby's Dream Land for the Gameboy had him white on the cover. More »

Let me be one of the first Americans to whine, jump up and down, and basically throw a little fit in honor of Europe's VC update this week, which not only features Super Mario World and Vigilante from the NA update, but also Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, the sequel to the original Legend of Zelda. This is the game that many call the black sheep of the series, as it featured side-scrolling action coupled with standard RPG staples such as experience points and magic spells. More »

Mark my words, this Saturday, blood in the streets. That, and grown man crying. Hell, women crying too. This Saturday, the Wii launches in Japan. What am I picking up? Wii Sports (no, it's not bundled here) and nothing else. Why should I? Nintendo is putting a ton of sweet titles on the Virtual Console. The company has disclosed all the games that will hit this year. The Land of the Rising Sun will see, count 'em, 20 more games than the US before year's end. Envy after the jump. Brian Ashcraft More »

So, North America. You're getting the Wii before Japan? Meh. What-ever. Japan is still getting the better end of the deal, because the country's getting more Virtual Console games. Yup. How many more? 18 more. That means Nintendo loves Japan nearly twenty times more than America or something like that. Forget more consoles! Games are what matter. GAMES. And here's a list of all the VC games The Land of the Rising Sun will see when the console launches there this December: <a href="http://kotaku.com/211773/shocker-japan-gets-more-virtual-console-games" title="Click here to read more about Shocker!
