Brawl, video game retailer GameStop is getting ready to launch a nationwide tournament for Activision's latest war game, Call of Duty: World at War. Pokémon USA has just announced the first ever Video Game Showdown, which will pit the very best the United States has to offer against the top Pokémon Diamond and Pearl players in Japan to determine once and for all which country has more free time. Tournaments will be taking place in New York and Los Angeles on July 19th and 12th respectively, with 256 players in each city vying for sixteen paid trips to Orlando to battle against the Japanese players, who incidentally get a much better trip.

GameStop wants you to prove it. Along with midnight launches at over 2,500 locations, the retailer has announced a nationwide Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament event to celebrate the launch of the Wii game, which starts this Saturday at stores across the country. Store tournament winners will advance to the district level on March 15th, the regionals on March 29th, leading up to the finals on April 12th in San Jose California. The grand prize? GameStop is holding a Guitar Hero 2 contest on February 3, 2007 at select GameStop stores. This appeared as a feature in one of their newsletters, but oddly, very little information is available at the moment. There's no mention of what the prizes are, but they certainly have no problem with advertising how much the game is. I would venture to guess that a copy of the game will be one of the prizes, although, if you're good enough to compete in a contest, one would assume you already own a copy.
