It’s okay if you didn’t even know that there was a rock opera based on Nintendo’s most popular character. The Mario Opera has only ever played once and that was eight long years ago. It’s coming back next week but you’ll need to be in New York City to see it.
The stage show is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Jonathan Mann and looks at a Mario who has an existential crisis after realizing that he’s a character in a video game. The Mario Opera’s return will be a one-night-only affair at the Joe’s Pub performance space, with music by The Everymen and visuals by filmmaker Colin Snyder. Details about getting tickets are here. If nothing else, please go to see that crazy Bowser outfit in real life.
