I've mentioned my hatred of the moniker "HD" before but this one definitely takes the cake. What is "high definition" about this thing, exactly? #zunehd
Alas, a viable alternative to the iPods I've been using for so many years.
Don't get me wrong, I like my iPod Touch -- but I'm in the market for a memory upgrade, and this new Zune HD looks more promising than Apple's newest alternative.
The new iPod Touch systems are pretty similar to the old, but now feature voice control and voice memos. That doesn't do much for me.
And it's always nice to have some 360 compatibility from the Zune.
@Mad_Mulatto: Indeed. For all their failings, Microsoft do have their shining moments. Notepad. The Sidewinder Mouse. The ZuneHD seems to be one of them as well.
@Soyerzzz: Could also be because of the Monopoly rules in Europe. You already saw how we teared into them about Wnidows. Can you even imagine what we would do with MS the moment they release some closed of Music player, that uses proprietary software to connect to it (Media player) and other things that are coupled to it.
Apple gets away with it because... well I don't know, maybe Miss Kroes is horny for Steve JObs or something but really I dont know ;). But one thing is certain, the moment MS releases it there, she'll go screaming into the fray shouting "RAAAH ANTI MONOPOLY!!!"
If I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 makes it to the Zune HD, I'll poop my pants full of daisies and butterflies.
Just got mine from Amazon, and it's syncing now, but the thing is damn nice. Never had a Zune before (I'm a convert from iPod.), but this thing is just damn nice to look at whilst it syncs 3000 files...
O dear god I hope the development community picks up for this device. I would LOVE for MS to create a music player that can give the iPod Touch a run for it's money.
I read somewhere today that Microsoft is waiting until they are able to integrate an App Store into the Zune Marketplace. Right now, they say, you can't use MS Points to buy any apps, which of course is ridiculous, so they are working to amend that. I'm sure it's a priority - at least it should be if they stand a chance of competing with Apple.
@jessenick:
Oh God. What a terrible idea. My virtual wallet would be constantly empty if that happened. Spend $2.50 to get an extra 100-200 Gamerscore? Yes, please!
@(Human) Gyaruson: I can never understand people like you. Does it really matter if others can see what you have done? I guess i'm that rare breed who just loves the video game for its content. Sad thing is, i know a lot of people who just rent/buy games to get a higher score/get trophies, it saddens me.
Lawls. I play games for fun. Pure and simple. I also love getting achievements. I do happen to love the short, relatively inexpensive games that the iPhone has to offer like Field Runners and Plants VS Zombies. So if MS started offering games like that with achievement points, that would be more incentive for me to buy them. I don't play games just for the points. But I do try to get all the achievements I can out of the games I like. Yes, my cancer is spreading!
@jessenick: Actually Zune actually does have achievements of a sort. I got an email the other day saying I got a bronze badge for listening to Children of Bodam.
@ReconToaster.:
Actually, if you just go to the online store you can pick between black, platinum, green, red and blue - along with some fancy engraving artwork and free inscriptions. Not bad, actually. The only extra cost is $5 for shipping.
@SuperTongue:
You're right. I just checked and it's every color I mentioned except black. Apparently they're taking another cue from Apple, and this is allowing others to know how awesome you are just buy looking at your laptop color. That's why most Mac's are white, but Mac Pros are silver. Elitism FTW!
@(Human) Gyaruson: I feel your pain but welcome to the world of getting screwed over with colors. I swear, every time a new player is released, the lower capacity players always get the colors while the premium ones are either black, black, silver, or black orrrrrrr the fabulous colors are only available in the country they come from. (blue Sansa Clip+, blue/pink Cowon D2+, ceramic white Cowon S9, Sony JP exclusive players, etc.)
On a side note, the blue 32gb is smex. Me want. 'Til I remember Zune needs a program like iTunes... *sigh* At least it does Unicode now.
@Mike Newlad:
Yeah, but you see more MacBooks than any other type of Apple product, save for maybe the iPhone. You better believe that was Apple's intention when they made that decision. :)
@branny:
The Zune software is pretty gravy. I prefer it to iTunes, except I have an 30 GB iPod Video, so I don't use it. If (when) I get this I'm really looking forward to being able to use the Zune software with it.
I've never been one for gadgets or doodads, because my PSP was always everything I wanted built into one device.
Seeing my friends iPhone however piqued my interest, and I was tempted to look into it, despite my hate for Apple.
Seeing this, with the possibility of indie games being added, really makes it tempting.. going to have to look at this new Zune thing and see if it's for me...
@Yossarian: Actually thats what I'm doing now. My iphone serves simply as a phone and gps device where I can look up info on anything on the fly. My Zune HD is dedicated to media such as music/movies/games so they both have their purposes
@Yossarian: The problem with the iPhone is that you have an essential function (phone) sharing battery life with non-essential functions (media, games, etc).
@Yossarian: Same here. I have room for the phone in one pocket, keys in the other (NEVAR have keys and phone in the same pocket and not in the back pocket) and wallet is reserved for the back right. I carry a man-purse to work (laptop, camera, moleskin), but not to the movies or when I'm out.

Which is weird for me, considering I've never personally owned a Microsoft product before.
But the Zune HD seems like a fantastic alternative for those who despise the iPod. Hell, it looks like a fantastic product, period.

Step 1) Put Zune HDs in a truck
Step 2) Head north

There's a notice at the top of the page at Zune Originals that "soon" all colors will be available for every model. Just not yet.

Without a phone, it has no place in my pocket.
The iPhone literally has everything I need in one device (and lots of stuff I don't even need).
I'd never carry a Zune *and* a phone at the same time. Not enough pockets, and no desire to wear cargo pants.

@PheonixAzure: I'm not dismissing the device, just saying personally that I have no room for it in my daily life.
I don't *want* two devices to carry around. I want one, and the iPhone covers my needs very nicely.

I don't carry backpacks, etc around, so I need one device that fits in my one empty front pocket.
I don't/can't want two devices in that pocket, just one.
I need stuff to not break when I sit down, so the back two pockets are out.
I need to carry my keys, and I won't put a phone in the same pocket as those...
capice?
@IndustrialJones: ty for backing me up... potatojenkins, take note ;)

I've never personally, in 18 months, run my iPhone out of power.
I have a charger that I set it on every night, and one for the car I'm on the road.
Granted, though, I do not listen to music religously, so I'm not burning battery 8 hours a day with the tunes rocking.
