This is a pretty interesting departure from the traditional stylings of the series. Absent is the click-and-run-into-enemy combat that used to be the hallmark, but it appears they developed a much more dynamic combat system. Hopefully that draws more people into the series and builds on its popularity.
Here's hoping we see a US release! The Ys series is, without a doubt, one of my favorite franchises ever, and Ark of Napishtim was nothing short of phenomenal. I'm currently playing through The Oath in Felghana, and it's great.
Also, the party system looks intriguing. The only thing that potentially worries me is load times--I bought Ark for both the PS2 and PSP, and the load times on the PSP were unbearably long.
Despite whatever glaring faults a game may have, does anyone else feel compelled to buy games just because the music is stellar? Gameplay (whatever that is), graphics, everything else aside, a good "game" soundtrack (not the pack-in, but as it exists in the game) is enough for me to warrant a purchase, and often be satisfied with the experience.
@pigz0011: In my experience, Ys has some of the best RPG music out there. Playing the originals on CD back in the day, some of my main memories come from the music ... so, yes, I completely understand.
@pigz0011: no, but the Ys 7 soundtrack (while sounding decent) is still lightyears behind the greatest moments from Ys 1-4. Episode 5 was absolutely bland and Ys 6 was appaling. Ys Origin was a nice return to the roots, but it doesn't count: most of the tracks were remixed material.
@Kaminari: Quite frankly, you sound like a blind fanboy.
"The Ys 7 soundtrack is still lightyears behind the greatest moments from Ys 1-4"? Where exactly have you heard the soundtrack? As far as I'm aware, the only official bit that's been released is the few minutes that play during the above trailer, and then there's the JDK band performance that has a live pre-production version of mostly the same music. That's an incredibly small sample to judge a whole soundtrack by.
And "Ys 6 was appaling (sic)"? Have you never played a game with a bad soundtrack? Sure, Ys 6 may be one of the weaker soundtracks overall in the series, but, objectively speaking, it's still pretty good, and it has a couple of tracks that are great. "Releast of the Far West Ocean," at the very least, is comparable to any of the best tracks from the first few games.
Being a JRPG on the PsP those boss battles look pretty awesome. Though the faces of the characters have a forgetable look. I still want to play Ys 1 and 2 off of the Wii. I heard they are very good rpgs. Just havent gotten around to it.
@Psychopathic Assassin: Ys 1 & 2 are quite different ... you might want to try the remakes unless you're totally cool with old school. :) I love the original Ys, but I can understand why people would be a little hesitant these days to play the original.
You literally just bump into things to attack. The Wii version is just like I remember on the TG16 CD ... however, you might want to try Legacy of Ys on the DS ... you can play the original way or actually swing a sword :P

Am I alone on this?

Do hope the soundtrack will be good also.

And, they better not go frelling digital distribution on this -- I want a full color manual and, hopefully, a CD!
