I mean I never was a fan (outside of Vampire Hunter D) of your work but this looked like he just phoned it in. However it's a nice change of pace from Nomura who I'm sure SE is just cattle prodding.
You know who I would love to get for like guest art for a FF, Ayame Kojima, Oh Great or Tite Kubo. It would be really nice.
I'm going to be a bit of a bitch and say it looks like he phoned it in on this one. He doesn't fit this new Final Fantasy, and I'm not sure he should care to. They are of different worlds now and I feel it's unkind tradition that lashes them together. Like "Elektra and Wolverine", I don't believe his heart was in this bit of fanart, and even if it was it's as if his fanciful languid lines do not adjust well to Nomura's rigid (but deceptively beautiful) fashion. This disconnect was cause enough for me to wonder what exactly Amano was up to these days.
*goes over to Wikipedia* *scrolls through lists of projects...* *checks out the videogames...* "title logo designer... title logo designer... title logo designe... eh? Art Designer? What game is that fo..." *jaw drops*
How the hell did I forget he was doing that!?! Well now... color me excited for another Ubisoft artbook then.
Amano's art is by far superior to Tetsuya Nomura who hasn't deviated from his generic designs (and they have been since the invention of the belt buckle)
Bring back Amano, reduce Nomura to an understudy and restore the balance.
@shaunmcilroy: Apples to oranges, my friend, apples to oranges. Amano's work is of a more traditional style. Tetsuya's work, on the other hand, is more modern.
Though I can't blame you for liking one (passionately) more than the other. To each their own. Not everybody can just enjoy art just as art.
I know that Amano's art is hit-and-miss in a sense that some will always hate it and some will always love it, but I would like to point out that his, admittedly somewhat bizarre, style is perfectly fit to some FF stories, such as for example this one:
@Barts: Uh, oh, I don't always know where the image will pop up with the new commenting system, so here is link to full screen: [artofvg.files.wordpress.com]
@Barts: Man, I'm not going to lie. I used to hate Amano's stuff. With a passion. But the key word is "used to." Past tense. I'm current a graduate student majoring in Biology, but I was seriously thinking about taking up artistic endeavors for college instead of the usual scientific route. Even as an art student, I wasn't a huge fan, but over the years (I don't draw/paint much anymore, but still appreciate and admire looking at art and the techniques that go into creating something) I just kind of got engulfed by his imagery. The point of games like Final Fantasy is to completely immerse you into a completely different world, make it exotic and novel. Lately, when I look at Amano's artwork, that's exactly the sense I get; I feel like I just got thrown into an entirely fantastic world that just gushes with all sorts of creativity.
Back then I saw Amano's artwork as some gibberish of slapped together washed out colors. But, that's not the point. It's why he uses the style that he does that matters.
@Ciraa: Would you be as kind as to show some photo of it? Not necessarily as a proof, but rather for me (and probably a few others, too) to see how it looks on human skin?
@Zolbrod: Yes, that too. Plus, in some games or movies his art was perfectly fit for the product (Final Fantasy VI, Vampire Hunter D), in some others, not so much.
@Barts: A good example of how well his art can translate to character design that goes very well with the game theme is this cinematic from PS1 version of Final Fantasy VI.
@Barts: I'm a firm believer that Unlimited SaGa/Romancing SaGa's Sketch Motion system was originally meant to translate Amano's art into full 3D graphics, but he's never been involved with more than promotional artwork for the SaGa series (albeit very good promotional artwork), and the engine itself never rendered more than very brief animated scenes.
Pardon me while I fantasize about a remake of SaGa Frontier rendered completely with hybrid 3D Amano sketches.
@Ashurahori: Amano's not legendary strictly on the strength of his character designs, though, which are honestly a little strange in a 3D world. (The one or two 3D FF's that have featured them have felt a little off to me.) He's more legendary for his art and for being the guy during the rise of FF's initial popularity.
Nomura's a better 3D character designer, though, and I think that someday he'll be as legendary as Amano is, if he isn't already. I personally feel like any modern FF game that *isn't* character designed by Nomura just looks wrong, and not like how I expect Final Fantasy to look. Probably the same way you would feel that about a 2D FF not drawn by Amano.
@badasscat: I do sympathize with your opinion, but I somehow think that Amano gave characters alot of life, while Nomura just drags on the same style over and over again with characters.
...well, not in the vein of the repetitiveness that is Akira Torayama's designs, but still... =P

Dammit girl we need talent, not a hentai artist.

Still, half-assed or not, I still feel all warm and fuzzy to see new FF character art by him.

He's a GREAT hentai artist and I rather have him at this point then Amano's lazy ass art or Nomura's overdone art.
01:09 PM
Why thank you!
01:11 PM
I'm not a big Amano fan....but man, this art really is one of the worst I've seen from him.

To each their own though, that's the beauty of it...

LOL! Don't worry about it my man, if you like it then all power to you.
