Look at all the execs that have driven companies to great financial ruin. They're recruited for their "knowledge and expertise" soon later, usually to fail one last time before retiring.
And yet most companies never hire at the top-tier exec level from within the company. While that might be reasonable, as to get new ideas from other places and not have this feeling of inbreeding, it usually means that career paths within a company are usually a sham, and you have to leave and come back if you ever want to break a certain plane.
@fuzzycuffs: Many a successful company hire top-tier executives from within. It's typically companies that are not meeting financial plans that are looking for outside ideas/cultural changes/industry or challenge experience that hire from outside the company.
Ok, so the grand majority of companies hire top-tier executives from outside of the company these days.
