"Windows 7 will be great for games, undoubtedly," he said. "It's all good news - it's even more robust, it's quicker relatively, and the early testing cycles are proving very promising overall.
I think it'll be nothing but good news for PC gamers, but we'll have more to say on that later on this year"
You know, if you take that quote, and replace the number "7" with the word "Vista", it's like it's 2007 all over again.
I'm going to reformat my PC today, a new mobo is on the way. I have no idea if I should install Vista x64 ultimate, XP x64 pro, or the x64 beta of Win7.
We live in a victim society loaded with people that have been spoon-fed everything to them for so long, that common sense is the exception instead of the norm.
When companies have to put warning labels on things such as "May contain Benzene" on a bottle of... Benzene, and "Caution: May Burn" on a CEDAR wood cooking board for Salmon...
Well...
Let's just say that needing to put warnings on overly violent video games in an effort to keep them out of childrens' hands is as unsurprising as baseball players admitting to using steroids.
I've been using Win7 for about a month now and every game runs flawlessly.
Case in point: Fallout3
I was playing FO3 on my XP install and it would consistently crash: 1st one would be after about 20 mins, then it'd be about once per hour.
In Win7, I've played it for hours on end with only 2 crashes so far. MUCH more stable.
So far I am pretty happy with it and look forward to the release (a friend of mine has access to the MS store and can get me a copy of Ultimate for cheap!).
@yagisencho: Should I be realy glad I was playing F3 for 4 hours last night then? @_@; I'm a bit new to heavy gaming on the PC, but I'm enjoying it so far.
I have the Windows 7 beta running right now and I am VERY happy with it, even in beta. I am not a Vista hater and was happy with Vista, but Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.
I have had the beta for 3 months or so. Not one crash, games run flawlessly and everything is much more snappy and responsive overall.
Windows 7 sucks with SLI. Tested for 2 weeks using my 9800GTX and didn't have one problem. Hooked up the second 9800GTX, turned on SLI and I can't get more then 5 minutes into a game without getting a blue screen of death. Disabled SLI but left the second card in and I still would get blue screened or lines all over the screen.
I do understand that the NVIDIA drivers are Beta and so is the OS, but none of my games work in SLI.
@Project_J187: Forgot to add that the games that would start with SLI enabled would have terrible performance. >20FPS and the single card would get around 50 FPS
@Derangel: Windows 7 drivers don't exist even in Beta as far as the driver selection on nVidia's site is concerned. I'd imagine he *is* using the vista drivers.
@Derangel: Initially I used the Vista Drivers (182.06) and they had the problem first. Switched to Beta drivers and still had the problem. I am aware that it is NVIDIA's problem just as much as MS, but here is MS saying there is not hybrid SLI support for 7:
@ChaoticInfinityX: I'm doing that currently with W7 beta, and I was doing it before with Vista too. But Vista over time decided it was going to be extremely sluggish and so I promptly uninstalled it. Usually something like that would be attributed to spyware or something like that, but my PC rarely has any problems like that because I run noscript or adblock plus in firefox. It was just strange, and I hope W7 doesn't suffer from that because I would like to run a DX10 OS.
Annoyingly enough though, I can't run Crysis as it crashes in W7 whenever I try to load a level, and seems to do that for other people as well. I doubt a patch will come out as they seem to have moved on to the worse performing/looking Warhead. Optimized my ass. Anyway, W7 is kind of annoying with its new taskbar, thankfully you can revert it back. They tried to emulate OSX with their dock system, and I can't see the appeal of it, and theres absolutely no gain for productivity, efficiency or anything like that.
I actually like my vista. I like the interface, how you can scroll through windows, and how you can view items you have minimized. (makes it great to watch youtube and study ;) )
@ReedF**kingRichards: I have no problems with Vista. I play many, many games on it. It's fine and I prefered it to XP right out the box. I will look at Windows 7 with interest though.
@Lemming: Me too. Vista runs great on my machine. But I built it myself. I've had no problems whatsoever. I have PC games going all the way back to the original Baldurs Gate (1998), up to games like The Witcher, Titan Quest, Crysis, etc and the all run great. Once I left XP, I never looked back. XP is old and doesn't offer much in the way of options with a lot of more advanced hardware. The one thing I always recommend with any MS OS is to way for SP1 to ship. Thats what I did with Vista and I haven't seen any of the problems people were complaining about.
Don't mind the people grinding on you. It's one of the side effects of Gawker's cross-linked articles.
I don't have a problem with games on Vista myself, but that might be because I've been playing nothing but Starcraft and Warcraft 3 on my PC for the last decade.
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: @T-DoggIsTheLick: Of course this is true, obviously there are people who do not have issues, but I've read one too many comments from people on various topics that seem to think that a good argument is claiming they don't have the problem (as if this could imply the problem doesn't exist or something, or the people who have the problem are doing something wrong/are crazy).
I will agree that the problems it has are greatly exagerated, as it was with XP when it was first released. A lot of problems were fixed with SP1, but I still had major slowdowns over time. I have the same issue with XP but the slowdowns are considerably less. Of course, this can also be attributed to the apps that I run. Theres some interesting things mentioned in this article, and I'm very bothered by some of the things that Vista does: [www.cs.auckland.ac.nz]
I find this bit hilarious: You can get an idea of just how important content protection is to Microsoft by looking at the Windows Vista logo requirements. The primary requirement for graphics devices in the Windows Vista Logo Program isn't, as would be expected, the ability to handle a high-resolution display or display a rich palette of colours. It isn't the presence of a good quantity of memory and powerful graphics rendering. It isn't even the ability to handle Vista's much-touted Aero interface, arguably the primary reason for running Vista. Instead, the number one requirement for Windows Vista graphics device certification, "GRAPHICS-0001" in the specification, is "Display adapter supports output connectors with content protection features and provides control via PVP and COPP DDIs". This is a pretty amazing admission, because it means that Microsoft is placing content protection above all other requirements for Vista, even the ability to handle Vista's primary feature, the Aero interface.
Brilliant! Much better then to shoot 1000 targets to get the money to buy that elusive plane on Ace Combat, the Call of Duty 4 like XP system will ensure that I will be hooked until I have the very last plane there is.
I missed out on Ace Combat 6 (the best, the onyl Ace Combat I do not own, the game to beat) because of its 360 exclusivity, but since HAWX is comming to PC (and ...Wii? I don't understand why Ubisoft doesnt confirm the Wii offering of this already) Ill be sure to pick it up day one.
Mostly because of the plane roster, they got ->EVERY PLANE I COULD EVER WANT<- (im a huge Area 88 fan, and they got all the old school planes I love in it, even the Harrier and Draken!).
Also, I quite enjoyed the precious offering from this team, the somewhat underrated Blazing Angels.
And now a freebie for Ubi, you can use this quote to sell your game, free of charge:
why doesn't SEGA port the recent Afterburner game to current consoles? that looks like a great arcade flight-sim. and the graphics are sweet. this looks a little bland compared to Ace Combat- but i'm certainly no authority on this genre of games...

It's a Bethesda game. If it's down to one crash per 2 hours, you're doing well.
That said, I love Bethesda games.

Only because Vista didn't work well for you, doesn't mean it's bad for everyone.
Using Vista Ultimate on a laptop after using XP on the very same laptop.
Might come as a shock, but playing Counter Strike Source almost on a daily basis I noticed the game performance IMPROVED AFTER installing Vista.
Not complaining about XP... never had a single problem with it.
But I also never had problems with Vista after service pack 1 (before that I have to agree that it was a pos).
