One Blu-ray player and not much else, despite Nick Huber's tired and weary little list war bullshit.

(Not really, but a good excuse to play my favorite YouTube video of all time.)

Oh and you can play them without paying MS for XBL ontop of your sub, and Blu-Ray is global, unlike Netflix
08/25/09
08/25/09
Oh, but you pay a $9 premium per individual movie to Sony as licensing fees...
So a bit of a wash unless you are really into owning HD movies.
A lot of people are pretty "meh" about the whole blu-ray thing. Myself included.
08/25/09
But it boils down to Netflix only being a US thing. So for many not only is Netflix a 'meh' its a 'wuzzat?"
08/25/09
Both views are valid, and it is perfectly reasonable, I think, for people to be dismissing blu-ray as a need on the personal level.
08/25/09
And really can't see how blu-ray is better in the long run vs Netflix. DVD's still do the exact same thing Blu-Rays do, and are a good $10 cheaper. With Netflix you can watch movies in a party with people on Live and watch tons of movies for what, $15 per month? 2 months of Netflix typically = 1 blu ray movie.

the point is.. there are going to be plenty of kids/families that go into the store.. and see 249.99 for the 360.. and 249.99 for the wii.. and they'll be swayed over to the other side.
the wii is leading by what like 100 - 200 thousand consoles in monthly sales nowadays.. that could easily be changed with price drops from the competition.
its not unheard of for families to go into stores looking to get a wii and be talked into a 360.. especially for the same price with lots more features.. and for the comment about adding games.. wii sports is a 3 year old game.. every christmas the 360 comes packed with 2 games.. so that doesnt really help the wii in my book.

another thing that hurt the other guys were the 3298523980 different skus. if they had just one 360 and one ps3.. that also would have helped.
i work at a video game store.. we talk people into getting 360s sometimes when they come in and say things like "my sister has a wii, and i was looking at getting something we can all play." you can then point them over to the 360 with lego star wars, scene it, and rock band. now thats even more plausible with a price drop on the 249.99 console. you can add in that the teenager or dad or whomever can play online.
but if the wii dropped by 50 or 100.. itd be a whole different story. i never said the wii was a toe to toe competitor to the 360/ps3.. but its still in the same category.. a video game console. so when unknowing consumers enter stores.. that dont already have their minds set on a wii.. the lower price could sway them.

In other words right now the last thing Nintendo is worried about is PS3's monthly sales beating them. At this point Nintendo will be far better selling their units at a profit and wait closer to November to announce a price drop. By waiting to announce a drop until then lets them bring even more attention to them when people will be deciding what to buy.
Another thing people seem to be forgetting is supply. If sales are even half as much as some are suggesting then supply will be a significant issue.
Anyways its sure is good to have the arrogant Sony fanboys back to hyping and hoping instead of denying and moping but keep in mind one thing- Baring a miracle of EPIC PROPORTIONS Sony is going to have fumbled away a lot of marketshare after this gen is over. At this moment we are talking A LOT of marketshare. The Slim is Sony's desperate attempt to stop the bleeding and repair a portion of the massive damage they have already received this generation. However, as I just said it would take a miracle, actually several miracles for Sony to get back all the marketshare they lost. Expanding marketshare beyond that is impossible. In other words in terms of real life business, Sony's abysmal performance this generation has put them in a lose-lose situation. The Slim is Sony's attempt to make those losses not quite as bad.
I'm sure I will be blasted with cries and accusations, but I've always said the same thing. I own all three consoles, but definately prefer MS and the 360. As far as Sony goes, I just want them to survive this and prosper again for competition's sake.
Wow, I just did all that with a WiiMote in Wii's Opera browser.

i pledge no allegiance to any of these machines.. like ive said on kotaku a million times.. since the death of sega.. i havent cared about any of these guys.. i just think its neat that nintendo turned things around for themselves.. and with sales slowing.. if they want to stay at their same pace.. they need a price drop.
wii sports resort isnt selling systems like wii fit, wii sports, and mario kart did.. it seems as if theyre starting to have come close to tapping their customer base at this price.. while sony and microsoft on the other hand will be reaching a whole new audience with price drops.. same works for nintendo if they go below 200 or at least below 299. even more ppl will lap that up.. at 149 even some of the "hardcores" that sold their wiis will rebuy.

PSN won't be free next gen, count on it.
08/25/09
Sony doesn't need the money for PSN.
08/25/09
The advantage is on PSN on this one, really, because by the time they start charging for it those squawking about prices now will have become desensitized to the cost.
And Bubble, do you seriously expect that kind of policy to stay?
08/25/09
I don't think Live will ever be free or go down in price as so many are willing to pay, i just don't think charging for something that is offered for free by everyone else is right, it's like if you started being charged to send emails. I pay for my internet connection, i paid for the console and i paid for my games why should i be charged just to play with others online?

-Built in wi-fi
-Free online multiplayer
-Interchangeable hard drives that are significantly bigger and cheaper
-Blu-ray

For me, the 360 is the better value... it pays for itself. I'm saving about $10/mo on netflix (even factoring in Live Gold). Even if I never play a single game, it will end up free someday.
08/25/09
You have to have both Gold and a Netflix account, right?
08/25/09
Now, I can pay for 1 movie out at a time, and still watch an unlimited number of movies on my tv in HD for $9. Add in $2.50 for Live Gold (i buy those 1 yr cards on ebay whenever i can find a good deal) and I'm still saving like $6/mo. I know that's a different # than i said before. my math was wrong.
Also: yes, i know the selection is limited for stream online. But I think there is enough stuff. And I prefer watching movies on my tv to doing so on my computer...
08/25/09
Doesn't sound like there is, so the savings for you was from cutting back your Netflix account level. Makes sense, but too bad I am already doing the cheap Netflix level... so no more possible savings for me.
The selection does suck, but it also seems to be getting better. The biggest change seems to be a lot more TV shows added, which is huge. I've got a man crush on Anthony Bourdain that Netflix will be able to satiate for quite some time....

08/25/09
Going to be a very interesting hoilday season and Microsoft could cut $50 dollars off of all the units and still not sweat.
08/25/09
08/25/09
That was just a long way of saying I have no idea.
08/25/09
It's going to be one of those "I've wanted one but it was too expensive and now it's cheap!" type things...
Except people will still see that there aren't really a whole lot of worthwhile games on the ps3.
08/25/09
I think PS3 has 20 or so less games than the PS3. and most games are now multi-plat.

I'm almost flabbergasted anytime someone mentions otherwise these days. I guess I could understand if you just own a 360 and therefore don't pay attention to any of the games or news regarding the PS3... but damn. You're so wrong it's not even funny.
08/25/09
ps3 has infamous, little big planet, valkyria chronicles, yakuza 3 (man i wish it was localized), uncharted 1 and 2, metal gear solid 4, god of war 3, ratchet and clank, and the resistance games.
360 only has halo, crackdown, fable, left 4 dead, and gears. crackdown is the only one of those i really care about.. although shadow complex was super awesome.
08/25/09
08/25/09
Don't forget Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia (sorry, won't believe it's coming to the US until Namco says so), Mass Effect, Shadow Complex.
I've been surprised how light the ps3 has been on rpgs, actually.
08/25/09
PS3 does have Valkyria Chronicles, which wasn't much of a seller, but is an amazing RPG. Also Folklore. I think ME2 is coming to the PS3 as well isn't it, at least at some point based on what I've read from Electronic Arts.
PS3 also has Infamous, which is an awesome game, as well as the Motorstorm series and Littlebig Planet.
There are also a lot of really good PSN titles on par with Shadow Complex like Fat Princess, Trine (eventually coming to the 360 from what I've read), Wipeout HD, Stardust HD, and Last Man Standing.
Both system have their own exclusives, I was just pointing out that saying the PS3 doesn't have a good library of games is an old argument that doesn't even begin to hold water anymore.
