Hasn't worked out that way.

After an initial flurry of titles, releases for the service soon slowed to the point where most of you probably forgot it was even around. And it may as well have disappeared, with Microsoft saying it has now "finished it's portfolio" of releases for the service, and that following one final release (which has yet to be determined), there will be no more Xbox games offered for download (though you'll still be able to get the games already on there).

Shame. The service had real potential. Or, it would have if Microsoft had bothered releasing more stuff like Psychonauts, or had fixed some backwards-compatibility issues so they could sell Jet Set Radio and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath.

UPDATE - Reader Adrian points out that the Xbox Originals have already been "moved" and rebranded, and are sitting on Xbox.com as the first offerings for Microsoft's "Games on Demand" service.

<![CDATA[Xbox Originals Brings The Payne]]> Rockstar injects the Xbox 360 with a double dose of gritty film noir and slow-motion gunfire with the release of the first two Max Payne games as Xbox Originals.

As foretold by the ESRB last month, both Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne are now available for purchase and play on your Xbox 360 courtesy of the Xbox Originals program. Both games will set you back 1200 Microsoft points ($15.00 in real-world money), which is a small price to pay for washing the taste of Marky Mark's performance in the movie out of your mouth before Rockstar releases Max Payne 3.

<![CDATA[Xbox Originals Getting Double Dose Of Payne?]]> Rockstar Games and Microsoft may be giving Xbox 360 owners a chance to brush up on their Max Payne history in advance of the release of Max Payne 3, courtesy of the Xbox Originals program.

The ESRB lists relatively new ratings for both Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne for the Xbox 360. Typically, that's a good indicator that the games are going to hit the Xbox Originals lineup. That's a good opportunity for those of you who missed out on the originals to see how Max progresses from terminally pinch-faced to sad and droopy to blood-spattered and grizzled over the course of the trilogy.

We expect the release date to be between now and "Winter."

<![CDATA[Xbox Live Deals Discounting Fable And Alien Hominid]]> While we're waiting for Lionhead's next batch of downloadable content for Fable II, Microsoft slashes the price of the original next week, with an Alien Hominid HD discount following soon after.

The Xbox Deal of the Week soldiers on next week with "the beloved RPG classic from Peter Molyneux", Fable. The Xbox Original is being discounted from 1200 Microsoft points to 800, giving players who missed out an excellent reason to experience the game that Fable II apologized for so capably.

During the week of March 23rd, the Battlestations Midway: Iowa Mission Pack add-on gets discounted by 20%, with things picking up once again on the 30th with Alien Hominid's price lowered to 400 points.

See? The Xbox Live Deal of the Week program isn't all bad! Just mostly bad.

<![CDATA[Your Next Xbox Original Is...Blowout?]]> The Xbox Originals program selection process continues to confuse, as the Gamerscore Blog revlelas the next addition to the lineup of downloadable "classics" for the Xbox 360, Terminal Reality's Blowout.

Only the fact that Crecente might actually be reading this post keeps me from just writing "Why?" 200 times and calling it a day. For 1200 Microsoft points on January 19th you can download Majesco's 2003 run and gun shooter, which scored around a 50 average on GameRankings. If that's a bit too pricey, you could always buy the original game for the Xbox on Amazon for $1.50 used. Or you could just not buy it at all, which is probably your safest bet.

At this point I am convinced the Xbox Originals selection process features a hat and a blindfolded child.

<![CDATA[Halo CE Is Your Xbox Live Deal of the Week]]> If you're not one of the five million-plus who already has a copy of Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft is giving you a chance to score the Xbox Originals version on the cheap this week.

The newest (and final) Holiday Deal of the Week from the Xbox team is the original Halo, now just a mere 600 Microsoft Points, 50% off the standard Xbox Originals price of 1200 Microsoft Points. If we're looking at this abacus right, that's just $7.50 for the game that EGM called "the killer app for the Xbox." Wow!

It will be available for Xbox Live Gold members in all regions starting Tuesday, ending Monday.

Happy nostalgia!

<![CDATA[Your Next Xbox Originals Are...]]> Microsoft is warming up two additional Xbox Originals for December, both of which may be filed under "good if noticeably flawed." Sega Soccer Slam and Raze's Hell will both hit Xbox Live Marketplace next week.

Sega Soccer Slam was originally released in 2002 for the Xbox, a zany, arcadey soccer game from Black Box, then known for the NHL 2K work. This one's just for North America only, the home of soccer!

Raze's Hell puts you in the shoes... err, bare feet of anti-hero Raze, who must destroy all cute things, gruesomely, in this hard as hell, action shoot 'n' slash. Both Xbox Originals will set you back the standard 1500 Microsoft Points when they land Monday.

<![CDATA[And Your Next Xbox Original Is...]]> ...Zapper. Do try and remain calm, will you? Blitz's cricket platformer, first released in 2002, will be ready for download on your 360 on November 17, for the customary price of 1200 MS Points. Really, Microsoft. Zapper? It's the lead-up to Christmas, and you release Zapper? An average (and that's being kind) last-gen platformer that wasn't even an Xbox exclusive? You could have at least given us Blinx. Least that'd be good for a laugh or two.

<![CDATA[San Andreas Rolls Onto Xbox Originals]]> Microsoft are yet to officially announce it, but a listing has appeared on Xbox.com for the digital re-release of 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. We'll take that as announcement enough. It'll be the standard 1200 points, and will go on sale next Monday, October 20. For those left wanting by GTAIV's flat final stages, now's as good a time as any to go back to the days GTA games could get away with alien abduction sub-plots and jetpacks.

<![CDATA[Xbox Originals: Destroy All Humans And Intellivision Reborn]]> This month sees the largest addition to the Xbox Originals program for the Xbox 360 ever, with a more than 61 games hitting the service on September 15th. Of course all but one of those games is part of Crave's Intellivision Reborn compilation - which incidentally failed to spark a rebirth of the Intellivision - but if we're going to get technical about things than none of those even count, having not originally appeared on the Xbox. So, a whole slew of Intellivision Games of dubious quality, and one excellent alien invasion title in THQ's Destroy All Humans, a game that received the coveted Fahey award for Best Use Of Zim in a Non-Zim role.

Thanks to Mustapha for pointing out the new additions.

<![CDATA[Jade Empire Is Your Next Xbox Original]]> Microsoft have just announced that the next original Xbox game to be granted a second lease of life will be BioWare's Jade Empire. For a BioWare game it's nowhere near as fondly recalled as some of their other, more laser gun-oriented titles, but it's still an excellent game, especially its take on RPG combat. It'll be made available on July 21, for the usual 1200 MS Points.

<![CDATA[New Xbox Originals: Stubbs And Gauntlet]]> I'd be quite interested to see the process involved with choosing what games become Xbox Live Arcade Xbox Originals. I am beginning to think a hat is involved. While some of the picks so far have been no-brainers, others are a bit more questionable.

Stubbs The Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is one of those original Xbox titles I can see on the service, as it was a quality game that 360 newcomers shouldn't miss out on. Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, on the other hand, was a nicely rendered hunk of crap that no one should bother spending 1200 Microsoft points on. There are seriously more than seven sorrows involved there.

If you want Gauntlet, download the Live Arcade version and enjoy yourself. If you want Stubbs, save up your points and get ready for the game's re-release on May 19th.

<![CDATA[Splinter Cell, Metal Arms Join Xbox Originals Lineup]]> MIcrosoft have announced that two further games are to be added to their lineup of Xbox Originals. First one's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which if you haven't played is worth it for the multiplayer alone. Other one's Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Swingin' Ape's (ie the Starcraft Ghost guys) murderously underrated robot platformer. Both games will be available everywhere except Korea and Japan, and both games will set you back the standard 1200 points when released on April 21.

<![CDATA[Dreamfall Journeys To Xbox Originals Library Next Week]]> The line-up of Xbox Originals for Xbox 360 will add one more next Monday, when Dreamfall: The Longest Journey hits Live Marketplace. Funcom's adventure game sequel to The Longest Journey divided critics, but won some praise, apparently warranting its "Game of the Year" distinction. Of course, that may just be marketing. If you're into it, 1200 Microsoft Points will make it yours. If you're not sold, there's plenty of information at the official Xbox site.

<![CDATA[Xbox Originals Adds Pirates, Ninjas Next Week]]> A trio of new oldies will make their way to the Xbox Live Marketplace next week, as Microsoft plans to add Sid Meier's Pirates!, Black and Ninja Gaiden Black to the Xbox Originals line-up. All three will arrive on February 11 for 1200 Microsoft Points—$15 in genuine US dollars. If scurvy, explosions and decapitations are your thing, clear some space on your hard drive for next Monday.

<![CDATA[Xbox Originals Arrive, Bring Free Themes]]> Hey, those Xbox Originals (aka old Xbox games) have arrived on Xbox Live Marketplace as of today, bringing a handful of extras with them. While the more mundane but practical stuff includes PDF instruction manuals and online controller mappings for games like Psychonauts, Halo and Indigo Propechy, there are some fun freebies, too. Picture packs and themes for each of the Xbox Originals are available for download by going to Marketplace > Game Store > Xbox Originals. Gussy up your Xbox 360 blades with free Fable stuff, if you want. Huzzah!

<![CDATA[Xbox Originals Are Achievement Free]]> Microsoft blogger Larry Hryb takes no delight in crushing fan dreams today with an update on the recently announced plan to release original Xbox games via Xbox Live Marketplace. Apparently, some were speculating that the company would go the extra mile for the 1200 MS Point releases, adding Achievements and Gamer Score to games like Halo, Fable, Psychonauts and Crimson Skies. Sadly, Mr. Hryb writes that adding such a feature would be technically impossible for the older titles, even adding a little frowning emoticon to illustrate the seriousness of the matter.

I'm sure that Microsoft—and many third parties—would love to add these options to older Xbox re-releases. The cash revenue from achievement whores could make even Psychonauts finally turn a healthy profit.
