If it's a game I don't like or an achievement that would require way too much effort (most frequently this is with multiplayer achievements) then I don't bother with it.
I don't understand why she is beating herself half to death playing games she admits she isn't enjoying, just to get her score up.
I like achievements when they encourage me to play the game more thoroughly than I would have otherwise. Grinding just for the points doesn't appeal to me.

In the end it's part of your life story to be able to say you dedicated yourself and were in the top 5 out of millions. Maybe it's competitiveness, maybe it's an addiction, but this is a lifestyle that was completely impossible not long ago.
While I'm sure the work involved in collecting things often isn't fun itself, the rush from all the micro milestones combined with the community recognition and participation could certainly keep it interesting.
This is basically making a game out of games. So, to hell with it, go for 200k or whatever. There are much worse ways to spend your time and at least this way you get recorded credit for having done it.
My primary aversion to this would be that it can devalue the actual content of the game when you play through it optimally for a singular purpose instead of experiencing the game as intended. However, many of the games really are pretty crappy and it may be more fun farming achievements out of them than going through the game normally.

It's a shame beating a movie-tie in is worth more points than getting 100% in GTA. I like PSN's trophy system because it seems less arbitrary, but I just haven't invested enough time on my Slim to really care about trophies.

Also when she says she's not hurting anyone, and thinks about how many games she could buy for the cost of rehab, it totally sounded like someone denying they have problem.
Personally though, I don't care or get it. It's not like it gets you anything.

For those of you who say that what she's doing is pointless or achievements mean nothing, that's really your opinion.
Would you say it to Billy Mitchell or Steve Wiebe or heck, even Owen's (world record score for some game I can't remember now that he broke and maybe hopefully he will remind us all which and maybe link the article) face that their own hi-scores mean nothing?
Different things mean different things for different people (probably could have phrased that better).

If this was a single guy, every post under this article would be mocking this person for being such an incredible loser.
Is it because she's female? Married? Or because she's a mother? How about a married guy with a child and he stays at home racking up gamerscore while the wife works? Imagine the comments in that situation!
EDIT: Why is she buying crappy games anyway? She could just rent games on Gamefly, milk it for achievements and return it. Clearly she isn't going back to replay the games she hated playing, so why buy it? I'm closing on 30k without even trying because most games hand out the majority of the achievements points for simply completing the singleplayer campaign.

if you think that any of the top gamerscore holders have the scores they do because of 'legitmate' (what ever that is) play are out of your mind. the top echelon of gamerscore acheivers are there by doing exactly what she is doing. there is an entire subculture of gamers that are in to it.
this is how she chooses to enjoy video games.
most people play the game themselves. she plays the gamerscore.
i'm willing to bet that she would probably woop up on most regular gamers anyhow.
i think it's sillier that there are people out there that will invest as much time as she does on 1 game as oppossed to everyone you can get your hands on.

I will buy one game (online multiplayer) and play only that game until the sequel is released. I will try to get to be an upper-echelon player in that community.
Playing a bunch of games that I don't want to play isn't play anymore and by definition, defeats the purpose.
Paying thousands of $$$ to be bored?

I hate, hate, hate when people in Halo talk to you and ask things like "Hey, will you guys line up like this so I can get the laser shot achievement." Or want you to stand there so they can run you over with their vehicle.
It's hilarious that it's fine to tweak your gamer score, but heaven forbid she play a game with her daughter and those achievements get added to the score.
The only other thing I have to say is that her husband must be one of the most considerate guys on the planet (though honestly, it's probably hurting her). For most people, when a partner is spending money like that and not even saying so, that's divorce.
At least she's self aware; that's something.
