I just added a PS3 to my gaming setup and I gotta say for a free service PSN isn't bad at all. But until they can implement persistent chat channels (and now persistent group chat too), PSN will always be vastly inferior to XBL.
Party chat where friends can interact regardless of what they are playing is worth $50 a year all by itself. Just don't tell that to Microsoft, I don't need any more ads popping up on my dashboard.
Quite honestly, I don't think this is a catch-up game anymore either. Both services have their own pros and cons. Personally, I prefer PSN over Live; it has almost all the features I need (except Voice Chat) and it gives them to me for free.
You can have a free party, but that doesn't mean it's the party to be at. Gamers have spoken and the cool party to be at is Xbox live. It was going to be where ever Halo is and that's Xbox live.
Why PSN wasn't like Xbox Live to begin with baffles me.
There is only a few things Xbox Live has that the PSN doesn't.
1.) Everyone I know who games has both a 360 and Xbox Live. I barely know anybody with a PS3 let alone a PSN account.
2.) Headsets. The 360 came bundled with a pair. As a result, there are a lot of people using it on it. From what I heard from PSN, nobody uses mics. Only a few. Just because Sony never packaged any from what I know.
3.) Publicity. Non-gamers knows what Xbox Live is. The same can't be said about PSN. Partially because Xbox Live is synonymous with the Xbox Brand itself while PSN still feels like a seperate feature.
If Sony could make PSN as popular as Live with about the same number of users as Live (not counting those with multiple profiles), then PSN will be like Xbox Live.
@n00b_pwner: The day everybody gets and uses a headset for PS3 is the day I go completely offline.
I even had a headset - used it once, and never used it again. Don't even know where the hell the charger for it is anymore, and I don't care to find it.
@n00b_pwner: I know a bunch of people with PSN and PS3s.
@n00b_pwner: That's funny, I don't have core, am not interested, and have never had a problem playing online... OH THAT'S RIGHT, BECAUSE PSN IS FREE ONLINE PLAY!
Damn them for wanting alternate, optional routes for paying for the service while keeping the basics free... Unlike XBL which charges you for the basics then charges you for other stuff on top of that.
Most of the "problems" with PSN at this point don't even really bother me, and I would much rather have Xbox Live Silver to be like PSN. (Of course, then people would realize they are paying for nothing basically and MS would lose a lot of money)
I mean why do we even pay for Online play on the 360? Everything is fucking hosted locally.
@D Mitsuki : Gotta have guts kid!: People continue to pay for Xbox Live because of perceived value. At this point it's all social beliefs(akin to Wii is casual and PS3 has no good games). People say something long enough and then they start to believe it's true - like how some arguable useless features become important when people want to say something is better.
Truthfully the only things that really matter that are better on Live is marginally faster downloads and that comes from a better software back end which can be fixed on Sony's end for PSN. Cross game voice chat and other things people complain about are really just fluff stuff that don't actually matter because they're horribly niche.
Why not just fire up Ventrillo for instance? It won't force your hardware to handle more of a load after all and serves the same purpose.
@Black-Dog-Howls: Not everyone has vent/a pc close enough to use vent. Cross game voice chat is a luxury people have come to expect. I think Sony should get on the ball with it soon, and I'm sure they're working on it. It is kind of niche, but I'd prefer to hop in a chatroom with my friends on PSN where I can speak and not just txt.
@Black-Dog-Howls: While I agree with most of what you said, cross game voice chat isn't horribly niche. It's a fundamental communication function. I tend to mostly talk to my friends through XBL instead of by phone, just because I'll log on and see them there. Seeing how I play my consoles in my living room (and my PC in my study), Vent isn't much of a casual "just fire it up" option.
If PSN had a similar party system to XBL, I'd likely have no real complaints.
@Go Go Gadget: Gizmo: @choral_music: My point was more that it's something that isn't fundamental to a game experience unless it's missing inside of the game itself. You don't -need- to be talking to your friend playing Burnout while you're playing Uncharted or Last Guardian for instance.
I never understood the desire for cross game chat and other such silliness. It would totally kill the mood if I were playing Uncharted or InFamous while one of my friends jibber-jabbered about God knows what.
Just like you don't need to talk on the phone when you're cooking some dinner and your friend is watching TV.
The "don't need argument" isn't solid at all. Cross-game interface is a pretty desirable feature because people have it...the people that have the 360 that is. If Xbox Live had you pay extra for cross-game chat, with the alternative being that you'd have to do without it, people would bitch and moan something horrible.
@Trey: That argument doesn't work out at all due to phone, stove, and tv all being completely separate products. People -think- they need it because they've been conditioned to believe they need it. We're talking about a majority of people that barely know the ins and outs of their consoles.
Chat lobbies are fine, but most people are going to chat in the same game because if their friend is online they're probably going to jump into that game instead of popping open cross game chat.
Good on PSN. Now we need Nintendo to catch up to PSN at least. Im still surprised the Handheld games for the DS have better Wi-Fi connection features than on the Wii.
I still don't know why Smash Bros. Brawl adapted some of the features of Jump Ultimate Stars had online.
@hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson: The gap between Nintendo and PSN is worlds greater than the gap between the PS2's online service and XBOX Live ever was. It's going to be hard for Nintendo to "catch up" when they're not really trying. Heck, I thought the Dreamcast did online better than Nintendo.
@puresewas1de: @Zeikcied: This is kinda bad on how bad Nintendo is with their online. But I gotta agree with you guys on that. Getting rid of Friend codes is the first step to a better online service.
@zach a mac rack alack: I would assume they just take what's easier to remember. Normal citizens could barely keep up with friend codes for their system, and then a friend code for every game. Child predators would have to go out of their way to stalk and find out which number belongs to "Little Timmy" or whatever little child's name they were stalking. It's not consolidated and they'd have to have like no free time and a database of friend codes to execute.
I wish our previous downloaded stuff had a better interface. I hate going down a big list just to look for a game or addon I deleted a while back and decide to download it again.

@(Zombie) Goldwings: yeah, pressing [SQUARE] switches the sorting method... you change it to albums, then press [TRIANGLE] on a game and select "information", select "album" and enter something like "Platformer", "Fighter" or whatever and you'll create an album of that name... once you've changed the album from "unknown" to anything else you can hastily rename entire folders by pressing [TRIANGLE] on the root folder... give it a go, it's pretty easy.
The same thing goes for Videos, Music and Pictures too... though I do wish they'd let me sort my friends list into groups too...
So Sony has finally taken the PR to the next level: If you're not competing then you don't have to concern yourself with how bad you perform. They're perfectly happy where they are and they have no imperative to do better because they don't feel they need to. Wonderful attitude to take Sony.
@choral_music: I don't think there's anything in the above statement that could be read as Sony implying they don't have to "compete" with Live anymore.
It never ceases to amaze me what imaginary silliness the more fanatic among us can glean from these PR quotes.
Not having your console come with a Mic is a Good thing.
At least you have to go 5 mins out of your way to chat online. There is enough Freaking morons on XboxLive and PSN already, lets not make it easier for these people.
Lets not knock the Single player mentality here.
These people enjoy their games as much as anyone.
They just feel that their experience should not be tainted with a steady stream of ignorance/racist/ waist of life comments from some fool sitting in his underpants.
Make Big Chief know-it-all put on some pants and go get a mic.
@Fallible.: In a strange way, I'd rather they didn't. Keeps the dumb kids who cbf to buy one off of my Internets.
@CosmicElement: Hey, I know I will! :) It'll be cheaper than the monetary butt-rape that is contacting her network too. 35p a minute? No thanks.
@Go Go Gadget: Gizmo: I like playing online sometimes, but one of the reasons I like my PS2/PS3 so much is because it has equal parts single-player focus. Games like Persona 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3 etc... I can enjoy these games solo. The 360 is very much an online multiplayer machine, which is why I tend to go on there for party games mostly.
A more structured online experience would be great, don't get me wrong, but I don't want that to ruin the unique experiences I already get from my PS3. Otherwise it might as well be an Xbox 360 Mk II.
Yeah, Sony has most of the basics down now. Although Xbox Live seems to making a lot of progress in the future with their streaming video, huge catalog of downloadable xbox 360 games, exclusive xbla stuff etc...
@MooglesInMyFace: Considering XBL has four years on PSN and PSN is free, I feel that Sony is doing a better job on top of not being that far behind. With a four year advantage over Sony, XBL really isn't doing that great. Also: At least PSN isn't going to bombard us with McDonald's advertisements... anytime soon that is.
@NinjaJesus: Yes I pay for advertisements and annoying kids singing pokemon on Halo and angry people calling me five on Call of Duty. Bang for my buck.
@NinjaJesus: On the contrary I have XBL and love my 360. I don't mind paying either, but its just annoying to have to mute people before every deathmatch because they're ungodly annoying; something I dont deal with on PSN, and on top of the annoying ads I see everyday, I will have them in my face at the comfort of my home.
Although PSN will probably go one step farther with the ads, aka putting them in home, that would piss me off too, its not just XBL thing.
In addition XBL doesn't really offer that much more and Sony offers things that XBL doesn't as well. Like me being able to EASILY store my music and movies that I've made onto my PS3. Windows Media Player 11 would not and does not work with my 360 and the techies at Microsoft could not figure it out for me either. With my PS3 I just start Tversity and it recognizes it right away.
Also I play video games with my video game console. So what if PSN doesn't offer netflix, I just want to play Halo not watch movies. My issue is probably more of the fact that Xbox is trying to be a multi-media product as opposed to just a videogame console which I don't think they are doing that much of a good job with. SWony on the other hand has that down and I haven't had any issues with them.
@DarkFestim: For me it does boil down to "You get what you pay for". With Live I get great connectivity, a better party system and unless the game itself has a flaw - a cheater free existance. Yeah, you have to occasionally deal with some idiot fucking your ear over the headset. You would get that more often on the PS3 if more people actually had headsets. (don't pretend it doesn't happen with a surprising ratio considering how few headsets are out there)
When a person cheats on PSN or is in general being a douche, what happens? Maybe if they are extra bad and Sony is feeling aggresive they might get their PSN ID banned? Who cares? They just make another one. They are free. Since you pay for that gold subscription on XBLA, the people you run into tend to be a "little" better behaved. I play multi-player game on both systems. I have headsets for both systems... kids on Live can be jerks and need their mouths washed. Meanwhile, the people on PSN say crap that flat-out scares me.
When was the last time there was a major multi-player game release on PSN and the servers weren't going up and down like some high school cheerleader? I am not going to pretend that Live is some miracle 100% always up system; but you can't even begin to compare the PSN in stability.
I agree that PSN has made head-way. However I disagree in any notion that Sony is catching up. If anything they aren't falling behind as fast - which isn't the same thing. Being on Live is like having a girlfriend. It is generally a great experience, but it costs you money from time to time. PSN is like internet porn; you got off, there were no commitments and it was free.
@Aprotosis: I agree with some of your sentiment, though I don't feel Live is value for money.
In my experience, I've encountered far more douchefags on Live than on the PS3... the price point doesn't seem to be a dissuading factor in the least (there are arseholes on both systems, and perhaps it is just the headset saturation that makes Live's bad eggs all the more apparent, but, aside from some of the mouth-breathers in home, the PSN has far less of a visible problem).
The PSN is actually pretty stable... it might go down for a few hours hear and there for scheduled maintenance, but usually only when a new major network feature is being added (the last time I recall a major outage was the launch of home... it lasted about 12 hours at most)... as far as major online releases; Killzone 2 has had a great track record (I've experienced no online hickups thus far)...
I only suffer online when using a slow connection (my parents house has a feeble connection, so when I visit them my games lag to hell, though noone else is effected most of the time).
I live in the UK, and nine times out of ten, whenever I play a game on live the host is from america and I get the lag disadvantage (when I host everyone else lags too and I get a fuckton of abuse and ragequits), whilst I dont get that as often on the PSN.
I won't even pretend that the PSN has all of the features Live has, but feature-to-feature, the gap is closing... both services offer stuff that the competitor doesn't, and for online gaming, live has the more desirable feature set (cross game chat/invites), but I find, and I'm sure a lot of people will agree, especially in Europe, that stability wise, the PS3 is king.
@DarkFestim: First you're praising the PS3 for letting you store your music and movies that you've made on your PS3. Then you go on to discredit the 360 for offering Netflix, because you "play video games with [your] video game console" and Xbox is "trying to be a multi-media product as opposed to just as videogame console." Wasn't it the PS3 that let you store movies and music you made ON YOUR PS3?!? I really need to stop even trying to untangle the tangled mind of a fanboy.
"As a student film maker, it is easy for me to edit my films and process them to my PS3 with Tversity and from there copy it to my memory stick duo, that I hand to my professors to grade. I can also use blu-ray format for my films and personally I feel that blu-ray is better than hd and it makes my work look better. I am also skilled with it too. I can't do that on my 360 let alone get a shared connection with my 360 to my desktop."
But I thought you bought consoles to play video games? The reason I had that impression is you typed, "I play video games with my video game console. So what if PSN doesn't offer netflix, I just want to play Halo not watch movies."
"I go to the movies for free on Tuesday because of Optimum Rewards. Why wast 10 bucks on netflix every month when I can go for free."
Well, you see, some of us like to watch more than 1 movie per week. And occasionally we even enjoy watching a few of the movies we choose to view each month from the comfort of our own homes. And last I checked TV series weren't at movie theaters and a lot are available through Netflix.
I subscribed to Netflix LONG before it streamed on the 360. Actually, I subscribed long before their was even an Xbox Live. But now I do stream movies through the 360 at least a couple times a week. It's a great feature and for me it's a free feature as I already subscribed to both Netflix and Xbox Live.
You may not LIKE or USE the features Xbox Live Gold offers, but that doesn't mean it's not a far superior online service. PSN is fine, for free. But there is so much more going for Xbox Live, that I still think it's a better deal at $38.99 a year than Sony is for free. Sony is slowly improving, but they are still definitely playing a game of catch up.

@WallaJoy thinks Snorlax is the sexiest.: Do not do this. I got screwed over royally by using this method. Let's just say I ended up spending close to $30 on Megaman 9.
@WallaJoy thinks Snorlax is the sexiest.: They charge tax in the store. They charge tax again on the PSN. The card has an activation fee each time you use it (!!), the PSN only lets you add money in certain intervals ($10). The card had an odd amount on it (not a multiple of $10), which means I had to add money more than once, so got charged the fee several times.
It's all very hard to explain but at the end of the day, I spent about $28 and the only thing I could afford was Megaman 9 on the PSN. The rest of the money is either stuck forever on the card (because the PSN only allows you to add money in certain intervals for some stupid fucking reason) or is stuck in my PSN account because nothing is worth the proper amount of money for me to spend it after being charged tax for the second time.
