We've heard that us much as half of the staff of the X-Play show have been laid off. We've emailed and spoken with G4 officials, but they were not yet able to answer our questions.

If true, the network must be struggling. X-Play was one of the highest-rated shows on G4 and was just expanded to five days a week in January, 2008.

What began in 1998 as GameSpot TV and then become Extended Play and finally X-Play, was reworked and expanded on Jan. 14, 2008.

The show is hosted by Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb. In December, 2008 Sessler was promoted to G4's Editor-in-Chief of Games content.

As always take this with a grain of salt until we hear more directly from the company.

UPDATE - G4 has provided us with the following statement, confirming the scheduling change, as well as staff cuts:

G4 is returning AOTS and X-Play to their former production schedules and, starting March 2nd, AOTS will air 4 originals per week and X-Play 3 originals per week. While the company does not comment on personnel matters, we can confirm that producing fewer episodes has resulted in a decrease in staff. Savings resulting from this move will go directly towards producing more original programming in 2009. This is not a budget cut. G4 remains dedicated to these core franchises.

<![CDATA[AJ on X-Play - Yes, I'm a Girl, You Can Stop Speculating]]> A couple of weeks back, I climbed on a soapbox about the media frenzy surrounding video games in connection with real life violence or tragedy.

This week, I got to go on X-Play's Head-to-Head segment for a repeat performance with considerably less bearing* and more boob. Enjoy!

<![CDATA[Adam Sessler Gets The Boot... Up to Editor-In Chief]]> You see what happens when you interview Hsu and I on national TV? You get a promotion, that's what!

G4 just named X-Play co-host Adam Sessler as their Editor-in-Chief of Games Content. That means on top of overseeing editorial content for X-Play, Sessler will be charged with overseeing all game content for the entire network. He will also remain on TV with Morgan Webb.

“Adam is an incredible resource and has helped position G4 and “X-Play” as the center of the gaming universe,” said Neal Tiles, President G4 TV. “We are lucky to have an industry expert with his experience, wisdom and passion, as well as his strong relationships throughout the gaming community, leading our team.”

Let me be the first to say congrats Adam, you've certainly got the brow for editor in chief. I'm still working on mine.

<![CDATA[... ... ... Crecente Talks 2008 on X-Play]]> Adam Sessler was kind enough to invite me on to X-Play today to talk about the year in games with Dan Hsu.

As always it was fun chatting with Hsu and Sessler about the industry. One word of warning, it was the feed from Denver, not my brain that was on a few second delay. Swear!

<![CDATA[The Giant Prinny And The Prinnymobile]]> Last night in San Francisco NIS America held a special party for their upcoming PSP game Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?, featuring a giant drunken Prinny and the incredibly sexy Prinnymobile.

G4 has several photos of the giant Prinny in the wild, ordering drinks, bothering marketing executives, and just generally doing the sort of things Prinnies are apt to do when lacking the proper, scantily clad demoness authority figure. Eventually they got the rogue creature under control using the time-tested method of tearing apart its body and stuffing it in a giant garbage bag.

Speaking as Kotaku's biggest Disgaea fan, the only thing I crave more than my own giant Prinny costume is the Prinny-branded Toyota Scion parked outside the event.

Hit up the link below for 16 more photos of the misbehaving undead bird creature.

<![CDATA[Molyneux Teases Two New Projects On G4 Tonight]]> You can't keep a good hype machine down, especially one as efficient as Lionhead Studios' Peter Molyneux. The outspoken, excitable developer is teasing his next two projects on tonight's episode of G4's X-Play.

Now that Fable II has shipped and made a killing at retail, it's time to move on. The show is still a few hours away for those of us on the West Coast, but G4's The Feed writes that Pete will talk up one "familiar" game, hinting that a beloved Bullfrog or Lionhead franchise may be revisited. Ooh! What could it be?! The Moves II?

The other? It's touted to be "something completely different," specifically "different from anything any development studio has done before." Perhaps it's a hyperbole game? Whatever it is, we've now learned that a teaser for a teaser is almost as unbearable as an announcement about an announcement.

<![CDATA[And The G-Phoria Winners Are...]]> Weren't those G-Phoria awards exciting last night? I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! Okay, I was at Walmart buying cat litter, but I did brush precariously close to some seats in the office furniture section. So what did I miss? Nintendo getting shut out of every award except best racing game for Mario Kart Wii for one...an award it really didn't deserve. Rock Band and Grand Theft Auto IV each came away with three awards, with Metal Gear Solid 4 and Call of Duty 4 taking home two each. For those keeping track, that's seven awards to games that were number four in their respective series. It was a year of damn fine sequels, wasn't it? Turok walked away with the coveted Uwe Boll Film Award, which seems far more fitting than Skate winning Best Sports Game.

Keep in mind that these awards are all voted on by viewers, so the Game of the Year Award winner should be a pretty good indicator of the sort of audience G4 has left after they hacked away most of the good bits. And the winner is...Halo 3. Really. Hit the jump for the full awards listing.

<![CDATA[Devo Tracks Coming To Rock Band, Wireless Energy Domes Unconfirmed]]>

Devo is coming to Rock Band. G4's X-Play got the exclusive word from the band's own Mark Mothersbaugh who reveals that three of the New Wave outfit's songs will be digitally distributed your way at a future date. The only confirmed Devo track is "Through Being Cool" which Mothersbaugh says has been re-recorded with extra guitar licks. Licks that, we assume, are hot(t). Note to self: buy this.

<![CDATA[Sessler, Thompson Square Off On NPR Over Grand Theft Auto IV]]> X-Play co-host Adam Sessler joined Neal Conan on the NPR radio show Talk of the Nation earlier today to talk about the recent release of Grand Theft Auto IV. While the majority of the segment seemed to focus on relating GTA IV player experiences and informing the NPR audience on the realities, less so the media fantasies, of all things Grand Theft Auto, it took a dive about seven minutes in. That's when John "Jack" Thompson phoned in to drop his special brand of disinformation.

He regurgitated the standard anti-Take-Two spiel—albeit a bit more alliteratively, saying the company is "mentally molesting minors for money"—and threatening that he was working with unspecified law enforcement agencies to bring criminal charges against the publisher and Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick. That would be for claims of "graphic sex", not for the purported vandalizing of his Miami-area home.

Conan asks if Jack has actually played the game. The answer won't surprise you. The segment is worth a listen, as is NPR's previous coverage of GTA IV. And do stick around for Jack's sign off!

<![CDATA[Crecente, N'Gai Talk GTA 4]]> I went up to Denver today to tape some segments for X-Play about GTA 4. One or two, like the one above, will be popping up online tonight but the bulk of it will be showing up on their one hour special about the game tonight. If you want to turn it into a drinking game, take a drink every time I say GTA and TEN drinks when I accidentally refer to Rockstar's game as Gran Turismo. Smoooooooth move Brian. In my defense, or maybe theirs, neither N'Gai Croal nor Adam Sessler seemed to notice the mistake.

<![CDATA[Sessler On Grand Theft Box Office]]> We've touched on the subject before and have even come to the same conclusion, but there's something charming about X-Play's Adam Sessler delivery of the material in this installment of Sessler's Soapbox. Perhaps the best thing about these segments is that this is exactly how a conversation with Sessler goes in real life, only with varying degrees of slurring depending on how late at night it is. I still remember the first time I met him, when he put his arm across my shoulders and said...um. Well I couldn't quite make it out. The point here is Sessler kicks ass, regardless of whether you can make out what he's saying or not.]]> http://kotaku.com/index.php?op=postcommentfeed&postId=378078&view=rss&microfeed=true <![CDATA[Game Developers Choice Awards On Tonight]]> gdcawards.jpgFor those who didn't attend GDC last week, there's another chance to catch the Game Developers Choice Awards/Independent Games Festival Awards megashow. <![CDATA[Gerstmann On X-Play Tonight]]> Jeff Gerstmann of Gerstmann-gate fame will be making his first television appearance since his dismissal from GameSpot tonight at 8PM Eastern time on G4's newly revamped X-Play. Gerstman will be on hand to discuss the lack of innovation in Japanese gaming, a topic that was recently brought to light via a Gamasutra interview with Konami sound director Akira Yamaoka. As expected, Gerstmann will also discuss his abrupt departure from GameSpot, because that's really the gist of why he's appearing on the show in the first place. Otherwise the little press blurb we got from G4 wouldn't have been sent with the title "JEFF GERSTMANN'S FIRST TV APPEARANCE". I hope I get half as popular as Jeff does when Crecente finally fires me.

<![CDATA[EA vs Fox: Adam Sessler Weighs in]]>
G4 host Adama Sessler gives his opinion on the whole Fox News/Mass Effect imbroglio in this clip from a recent episode of X-Play. He presents the facts with much more aplomb and fairness than Fox did, but in the end turns the tables to give the network and author Cooper Lawrence a taste of their own medicine. Although Lawrence has since apologized for her missteps, it's still fun to watch Sessler take her and the dubious Fox News to task.

<![CDATA[X-Play Awards BioShock Game Of The Year]]> Sometimes not having cable sucks, yet other times it is a blessing in disguise. In this situation? You decide! Apparently the X-Play Best of 2007 Awards aired last night on G4, and BioShock took home top honors in four categories, included the probably coveted Game of the Year category. BS (there's a fun abbreviation) also won for Best Writing, Best Soundtrack, and Best Art Direction. Meanwhile Portal took the Most Original Game and Best New Character (GLaDOS) awards, with the usual suspects such as Rock Band, COD 4, Super Mario Galaxy filling in the rest. Perhaps the only real upset here is Supreme Commander taking the award for Best Strategy Game in the year that Command and Conquer 3 and World in Conflict were released, but when you get right down to it that really is a matter of taste that I'm sure has sparked countless forum battles by those so inclined to start such. <![CDATA["X-Play Best of 2007 Awards" Nominees]]> It's that time of year again when everyone needs to name winners and losers. In my heart, we're all winners. OK, that's a lie.
