That record has now been broken.

Over the weekend, 300 kids at the Cyber Fusion 2009 event in Malaysia set a new mark (a new "official" one, at any rate), bringing not only more gamers, but managing to play for 40 consecutive hours.

The most-played games over the weekend were Team Fortress 2 and titles from the Quake and Unreal Tournament series, while organisers also spotted a few users grinding away on their WoW accounts during quieter moments.

<![CDATA[Path to Record-Setting Guitar Hero Session Paved With Shattered Axes]]> Danny Johnson, Wednesday, set a new world record in Guitar Hero III, not only toppling the previous record set last August in Minnesota, but also landing a story in the New York Times.

Seth Schiesel reports that Johnson recorded a score of 973,954 in a roughly seven-minute rendition of DragonForce's Through the Fire and Flames at a Best Buy in Midtown Manhattan.

Johnson says he owes his record-setting play through, in part, to strategic use of Star Power.

"You really have a choice of using Star Power during Red Snake or during the Twin Solo," he said, referring to guitar passages in "Through the Fire and Flames."

Sort of a no-brainer, but what is surprising is how many plastic guitars Johnson went through preparing for the record run. About 80 of the Guitar Hero controllers were destroyed over the last nine months in practice sessions by Johnson.

"When you're hitting that many notes and playing that fast, it just terrorizes the controller," said Scott Johnson, 45, Danny's father.

Johnson's record and his frightening practice didn't just land him story in the gray lady, it also got him an endorsement deal with gaming team and event promoter eMazingGaming.com.

Leaving a Broken Record (and Guitars) in His Wake

<![CDATA[DS World Record Attempt In London Tomorrow]]> Almost exactly a year ago, 381 Australian kids set the Guinness World Record for simultaneous Nintendo DS playing.

Game on! Tomorrow (Saturday October 25th) members of UK DS fan group DSLondon will try to crush those poor kids' dreams by SHATTERING the world record in a flurry of stylus swiping and button mashing as participants play any game they like for five glorious minutes.

The organizers hope to attract at least 500 DS gamers to the Rocket Complex on Holloway Road, London. I will be there with my DS, because when it comes to making children sad - Kotaku will always represent.

<![CDATA[Guitar Hero Expert Beats Dragonforce Record Score]]> What's your high score on Guitar Hero III's sore-finger finale "Through The Fire And The Flames?" At a 24-hour Guitar Hero marathon held by Blockbuster to benefit the nonprofit "Education is Freedom" children's charity, Grapevine, TX native Daniel Johnson blew away the Guiness World Record for a single-song high score.

Playing on Expert, no less, on an Xbox 360. So how many points, now?

Daniel scored 890,971 on the epic Dragonforce song, eclipsing the previous World Record set by Chris Chike by more than 10,000 points on his first attempt.

He didn't brag, though: "I’m glad that I had the opportunity to break the record and help people learn about Education is Freedom," said Johnson.

<![CDATA[World's Largest Gathering of Game Characters]]> the adventures of the amazing letter B I'm not entirely sure what I think of this but do find it telling with respect to the impact of Video Gaming on our society that Guinness (of the world's longest fingernails fame) is attempting to record the World's largest gathering of game characters. I was surprised to see that instead of the obvious location (Tokyo) that this will instead be attempted in London.

If you want to be in on the fun (yes, "fun" is such a subjective term, isn't it?) you better start planning your itinerary now as this will be attempted on Tuesday, March 18th. For further details check out Guinness' Gamer's Edition through the link below. Personally I think it would be a more interesting social experiment to have the World's largest gathering of Birdo characters. And when I say interesting I obviously mean scary as hell.

<![CDATA[Video: Xbox 360 Record-Breaking Water Balloon Fight]]>

Someone filmed the world's biggest water balloon fight with a video camera. It looks like it was a ton of fun, though surprisingly short. If I didn't know better, I'd say that's Joel's girlish giggling in the background.

<![CDATA[Xbox Waterballoon Fight In Real Life]]> waterballoonr1pc1.jpg

Those crazy aussies are trying to recreate the famous water balloon fight commercial for the Xbox 360 in Sydney on April 22.

Xbox 360 is hoping to set the world record for largest water balloon fight at Coogee Beach in Sydney to celebrate the console's launch. You have to buy tickets to get in, but each entry comes with an Xbox 360 Challenge Pack.

The pack's include an unnamed 360 game, a T-shirt (which I desperately want), atrucker cap, swimming goggles and canvas bag.

The event will include hands-on time with unreleased games, music by Melbourne band Kisschasy and both a radio station and a TV show both capturing all of the fun.

The current record for largest water balloon fight was set in 2005 when 2,677 Spaniards threw 50,855 balloons.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

How is your aim? [Xbox Oz, thanks Mac]
