In my most recent stretch of playing WoW I got into raiding which was fun, but I guess it just doesn't last. After a few months of the raiding schedule, needing to farm for consumables(NOT fun as a defensively oriented class/spec) I got tired of it and the fun of the game was no longer there. I still liked seeing new content, but not nearly as much as when I started. The gameplay got old for me, and it was mostly just the people I had met and my raid group that kept me in it. Eventually I decided it wasn't worth paying for, and stopped renewing the subscription.
Since then, I've had tons more time for playing other games. I think WoW might be best suited for people who a) don't really game much outside of WoW or b) can be happy long term just playing one game. That didn't work for me. I think someday I might return to WoW just to see the endgame type content, see the instances, do the quests at least once. Maybe next year sometime after I complete my degree...?
For now, I enjoy playing other PC and PS3 games, and watching sports way too much to dedicate time to WoW, and raiding.

Im no longer in a point of my life where I can commit such time into a videogame/"second life" without harming my first life. No good, Blizzard. Don't worry, you will see my €uros again when Starcraft II and Diablo III come out, sometime before the end of the next millenium.
PS: I demand a new Lost Vikings & Rock'n'Roll Racing!

Gravity sent me a notice that Ragnarok has a free to play server now with slightly altered rules, and that almost pulled me back in, but then I remembered how awful they were at running servers a few years ago (both uptime and policing...)

umm... $15 for a trip to movie theater? where do you live? In arizona its $9, and this is with an increase in price not too long ago.
btw, $15/month + wow is a rip off. Id rather pay $15/month and ANY other mmo. Everyone is the same in wow... I have no intensive to start up my account again.

Also, re: movie theater prices, he's not pulling your leg. He probably lives near a significant urban center. Fifteen dollars is about what I used to pay (or at least, what they'd ask me to pay) to see a movie in D.C.

Someone starting the game fresh can enjoy the Blood Elves and Draenei, along with their respective starting areas. Whereas Northrend and even just the Deathknights are relegated to level 55 and up. So it makes more sense to try and entice people with older more accessible content.
I do have to say, I think I started playing the game at the right now. Within months Blizzard made many changes (such as the mounts at level 30 thing) that made the game far more accessible to the average person.

I hate when people think because *they* got addicted, everyone else will; because *they* have no self-control themselves, noone else should play the game, because it's WarCrack.
Everyone reacts differently, and because one person cannot control themselves, doesn't mean everyone else should stop playing, or should be called stupid, or looked down upon.
It's getting really annoying to see whenever something does good, a company makes something spectacular and is highly successful, people have to find a reason to bash it into the ground and steer other people away from it because of their shortcomings.

"You play WoW? OMG you must have no life lolz." Right. Okay. But as you say, everyone reacts differently. Making time for WoW, if taken in moderation, is little different than making time for booze, TV, or hopeless attempts at getting sexual attention from your wife. Life is busy. People need to relax. WoW is one of many, many first-world options of doing that. We can't all have a river to go fish in after a bleary-eyed workday, people.

I don't think WoW is for everyone, but here are some tips that I personally think will help if you really want to enjoy WoW:
The end justifies the means, so what IS your goal? If it's just to level up, you probably won't have as much fun. Rather, enjoy the benefits that leveling up provides you. New skills, new areas, new dungeons, new quests, new opportunities - that's what is of interest.
Pay attention to the lore and the quests. Sure, you could play the game without ever reading a quest and just using an add-on to tell you where to go, but you're not going to enjoy the ride. WoW's lore rivals that of Tolkien and the Greeks in its depth, and if you take the time to let yourself figure out quests, rather than just taking the strategy guide route, you'll discover an exciting world full of interesting stories.
Play with other people. Granted, you are bound to run in to some bad eggs, but other people are a big part of what makes the WoW experience so compelling. Group up, go do some dungeons, give a little quid pro quo, or just talk. Foster relationships. You'll likely find that your own experience can be improved just by talking to someone else about theirs.
Good luck!
