This from Massive Entertainment's VP of Development Peter Sydow in an interview with Videogamers.com in which he discusses development of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of World In Conflict.
Yeah, at this point we've managed to replicate some of the effects, but I don't know what features will make it into the final release. Nearly all of our DX10 features are possible to do on the consoles if you give it enough time and resources, so we'll keep on working on them and see what happens.
See Funcom? Even the console developers can do it!

<![CDATA[ World in Conflict: Soviet Assault Yulja Campaign ]]>

World in Conflict is quite an unique take on PC strategy gaming, so I'm interested to see what World in Conflict: Soviet Assault will do for the Xbox 360 and PS3 (it's also popping up on the PC). This video shows off some of the single player campaign missions from the Soviet point of view. Most of them have been added to the single player campaign included in last year's release.

<![CDATA[ World in Conflict 360/PS3 Impressions ]]> World in Conflict, the PC based Cold War conflict RTS is grinding its gears to make its first big debut on consoles. The developers are billing this tale of the Soviets invading Germany not as an expansion but more of an "enhancement" to the original. The game is essentially the same as the PC version with some key differences such as this time rather than being from the Soviets perspective, we get the US perspective. That makes up the majority of the story changes and other changes have been implemented in the controls and menu system.

RTSs are traditionally menu deep affairs much more suited to the many keys of a PC rather than the limited buttons of a game controller. From what I could see, the developers (Massive and Swordfish Manchester) seem to have done an admirable job in making the switch from PC to consoles and have completely reworked the control and menu system to suit console specific controllers. FPS like camera controls allow you to navigate quickly and easily and a tracking reticle makes it easy to pinpoint that specific enemy. A new, simpler menu interface adds to the ease by making it unnecessary to dig through layers of menus to find the one you want. You can also take to your Global War Room to compare your victories and battles with fellow players from around the world.

Whether or not World in Conflict will successfully make the jump from PC to consoles (where many others have failed) remains to be seen and I will let RTS aficionados be the ones to make the final judgment. My personal experience with such games is admittedly rather limited, but I do wonder how the depth of a PC menu system can be truly duplicated in a console version. It seems a herculean task but if they can pull it off it could mean more successful console RTSs in the future. Look for World in Conflict to made available for your PS3 and 360 later this year.

Don't know what Soviet Assault is? Do keep up. It's the next World in Conflict release: for PC owners, it's a big expansion, for console owners, it's a standalone title. Here's the first footage to go along with the first details, along with the first [sigh] developer diary.

<![CDATA[ Details On World In Conflict Console Version ]]> World in Conflict is coming to the 360 and PS3. We already knew that. What we didn't know about this console-specific game is that it'll be called World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, and will take the PC game, give it console-specific controls and give you the chance to also command the invading Soviet forces. Yes, yes, In Soviet Russia, invaders command you, etc, etc. PC owners, for you, nothing else has changed: you'll get all the new content as an expansion pack, same time as the console versions arrive (which is "Fall").

<![CDATA[ World In Conflict Slated For Consoles This Fall ]]> Wic-win-cover.jpgGood news, console RTSers! Sierra/Massive Entertainment's acclaimed post-Cold War real-time strategy title World in Conflict is spreading from the PC to the Xbox 360 and PS3. Expected to launch fall 2008, these console versions won't just be a port of the original World in Conflict, instead including extra "new content" planned for both the singleplayer campaign and online multiplayer.

For existing PC players, this new content will come in the form of an add-on. Potential pricing has not been discussed. As for me, I just feel lucky that I'm no longer forced to own a PC to play a lot of games formerly reserved for the platform, even if the authenticity of experience isn't always duplicated.

Two rounds were played, one with Kotaku representing the US and the other representing mother Russia, and in both instances devs Vextor and Emma completely decimated our pitiful team in minutes. The third round we swapped partners, with Vextor and I facing Crecente and Emma. Showing what a difference a good partner makes, this time the game lasted until the timer ran out, and when the smoke cleared my team stood triumphant, waving the American flag while enjoying some hot dogs and apple pie. Q: Will there be an 'Army Creator' feature where you can create your own faction with your own units in-game, define bonuses etc?

Seriously, that may be the most deflating question ever to ask an RTS developer: "So, does your game do all this awesome stuff that you've never, ever hinted at or alluded to?" But there's some good stuff here if you are interested in Word in Conflict.

<![CDATA[ The World in Conflict Game Off ]]> THUMB-briancrecente.jpg

The Massive folks have challenged Team Kotaku to a little game-off in World in Conflict this week. They will be pitting two of the guys who helped create the game against myself and Fahey, in other words we are going to have not just our asses, but just about all of our body parts handed to us.

In exchange for this online pummeling we've agreed to undertake, Massive is going to send us videos of our digital disgrace for posting on the site and whether we win or not we take home some prizes. Not prizes for us, no, all we get is the public humiliation, the prizes will be for you, dear readers.

The Massive folks are going to hand over several copies of World in Conflict, some sort of autographed World in Conflict swag and some uber prize, perhaps a World in Conflict Skateboard or track jacket. I'm hoping to get you guys the board, because I've seen it and it kicks ass. No promises yet on what exactly we'll be getting for you, but it's going to be super cool.

Check back Friday evening to see just how horrible Fahey and I were whooped.

<![CDATA[ World in Conflict Hits Sept. 18 ]]> wicbox.jpg

It's official, everybody's favorite RTS that isn't really an RTS is hitting North America on September 18. The innovative strategy game will sell for $50, or you can pay an extra $10 for the Collector's Edition.

I played a bit of the game when it was in beta and I quite enjoyed it, though I think it would be a lot more fun if you were playing with a group of friends. That's mostly because in the game you take control of one type of unit and then have to rely on your team mates to provide support and such. I often played artillery and after hammering the enemy from a distance for most of the game found myself royally screwed when they came hunting for me and my team mates were nowhere to be found.

Hit the jump for the official press release.

SIERRA ENTERTAINMENT'S WORLD IN CONFLICT GOES GOLD

Highly Anticipated Action-Strategy Game from Massive Entertainment to Hit North American Retail Stores September 18

LOS ANGELES (August 10, 2007) - Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, is pleased to announce that development of World in Conflict™ is complete and the game has "Gone Gold." The upcoming action-strategy PC game was created by Massive Entertainment, a Sierra Entertainment internal studio, and will be available for personal computer at North American retail outlets on September 18 in both Standard and Collector's Edition versions for a suggested retail price of $49.99 and $59.99 respectively.

"Sierra Entertainment would like to congratulate Massive Entertainment for creating one of the premiere PC games of 2007, one that pushes the strategy genre to the next-generation, blurring the lines between strategy, action and first-person-shooter," said Martin Tremblay, president of worldwide studios, Sierra Entertainment. "World in Conflict delivers on the promise of modern PC gaming, providing amazing graphics featuring DX10 effects, groundbreaking multiplayer for individuals and clans, and fresh single player gameplay that will keep strategy fans engaged while also bringing a much broader group of gamers to the genre."

World in Conflict asks the terrifying question, what if the Cold War didn't end? The award-winning game represents the next-generation of strategy titles, pitting Cold War-era superpowers against one another with completely destructible 3D battlefields and blistering visuals using DX10 technology. World in Conflict features an innovative gameplay mechanism that removes traditional resource-gathering and base-building in favor of non-stop combat, tactical decisions and FPS-like intense action. The game also features a deep single-player campaign that showcases Hollywood-quality storytelling of the Cold War gone hot.

Features in World in Conflict include:
• Action-Focused Gameplay: World in Conflict focuses on tactical combat to create a game that is fast and hard-hitting - much like an FPS - by removing traditional base-building and resource gathering in favor of instant warfare and by doing so, creating a new category of PC games: Action-Strategy
• Dramatic Single-Player Campaign: World in Conflict's single player mode will offer a deep and emotional storyline created by renowned author and cold war authority, Larry Bond; players will strap on the combat boots of a young field commander featuring Hollywood voice-over talent and a thrilling personal journey through World War III
• Accessibility: World in Conflict's FPS-like control scheme and 360-degree camera make its action-strategy gameplay exciting for hardcore strategy fans as well as accessible to fans of other genres - strategy fans will love World in Conflict. For gamers who have never played strategy before, World in Conflict is the game to try
• Deep Multiplayer With "Next-Gen" Features: World in Conflict will support up to 16 players for head-to-head and team-based battles in Domination, Tug-of-War and Assault modes; online play will feature built-in Voice-over IP (VoIP), support for clan management, competitive ladders, online tournaments, chat rooms, friends lists and more
• Real World Super-Powered Warfare: Unleash the authentic military arsenals of the great superpowers including tanks, planes, trucks, troops and helicopters from the USA, Soviet Union and NATO; as well as massive tactical attacks such as carpet bombings, long-range artillery, napalm and nuclear weapons
• Player Roles - Innovative in the strategy genre, players will choose to engage the enemy as Infantry, Armor, Support, or Air specialists; multiplayer teams will need to master each role and their cooperative elements for maximum effectiveness
• Bleeding-Edge Graphics - The latest version of Massive's proprietary Masstech engine uses DX10 technology, with advanced lighting, particle and physics effects, and allows for a full 360-degree range of camera control
• Complete Destructibility - As the battle rages, the world environment pays the price as every object - houses, trees and more - crumble under the force of war
• Scalability: While pushing the bleeding edge, Massive's proprietary Masstech engine also scales down to accommodate a wide range of PC specifications - if you've played a modern PC game within the last two years, you'll be able to play World in Conflict

The World in Conflict Collector's Edition will include limited edition extras for hardcore fans and Cold War enthusiasts, including an authentic piece of the Berlin Wall, a bonus DVD from The History Channel®, behind the scenes videos and special packaging. Additional pre-order bonuses for the Collector's Edition and Standard Edition versions of World in Conflict are now available at participating retailers across North America, including an additional bonus DVD from The History Channel® and other added content.

World in Conflict will be available at retail stores in North America on September 18 for the personal computer with a suggested retail price of $49.99 for Standard Edition and $59.99 for the Collector's Edition. <![CDATA[ Gallery: World in Conflict 360 ]]> World in Conflict is turning a lot of PC gamer heads, and since it was confirmed for a simultaneous release on the Xbox 360 this September, console gamers are beginning to sit up and take notice. Not much of a war gamer myself, but looking at the Xbox 360 screens for the game I can see part of what all the excitement is about. This is one fine-looking alternate reality cold war action strategy game, console and PC alike. Between the looks and the intriguing 'what if the cold war never ended?' storyline, I could certainly see myself jumping on this bandwagon.

<![CDATA[ World in Conflict PC Game Screens ]]>

VU Games just sent word that they're working on a new strategy game for the PC.

War is coming home. World in Conflict represents the next generation of strategy games, with completely destructible 3D battlefields, aggressive team-based multiplayer action and a focus on fast, hard-hitting battles.

The game is set to hit the spring of 2007 and from what I've seen of the screens, I want it.
