Everyone I've spoken to is sad that a Great British Institution (TM) has folded. However, no-one I've spoken to has actually bought anything from Woolworths for about 15 years, because it was such a crappy shop. Coincidence?
I imagine most software publishers will be taking similar action to recover stock. Activision/EA must have loads of discs sitting in Woolies warehouses waiting to be claimed.
Zavvi, the British gaming / music / movie retailer that was created by a management buy-out of Virgin Megastore, were primarily supplied by one of the companies owned by Woolworths and have also now gone into administration. At the Zavvi in the Bluewater mall, Kent, they were offering Arcade 360's for £99 on a "when they're gone, they're gone" basis.
Our local Woolies shut down about a week ago, Its a huge unit in our indoor town centre. It's kind of spooky seeing it boarded-up..
When it was shutting 10-15% was knocked off the higher end goods such as plasmas, consoles etc. There was packs of vultures across the country on television moaning and fighting with staff that the prices were not cheap enough. If it wasn't bad enough for the staff who in somecases losing a job they have had for 20+ years...
This move by Ms is very unkind, but can see why. Wonder if any other manufacturers (not only console, but electronics in general) will follow suite?
@Scott Phillips: You do know that not everyone who worked for Woolworths was on the shop floor right? Like they had an IT department, a legal department, accounts, finance...blah blah blah. A lot of people today would love to be in job that they could garuantee they were still going to have in 20 years time. Perhaps you should engage your brain before making insensitive comments?
@Scott Phillips:You see adults have theses things called "mortgages" and "bills". Having a long term regular income helps pay for theses. Also after a certain period of time you actually form rudimentary relationships with other people. The term is called "friends".
Also after a certain period of time your role at work may evolve it is called a "promotion"
I know that the idea a job for life may seem quaint, but possibly you will understand when you finally make manager at your local McDonanlds. Since your cognitive ability seems to be so stunted. I assume that will be the only place that will employ you.
@Mr.Monkey: agreed, back when the uniform changed from light blue to navy, GAME were not as evil as their cheap Team Evil soccer uniforms show them to be
Oh, Woolworths. I shall miss you. You were always cheaper than that whore WHSmith. You always had offers on Haribo packs and your games were so neatly arranged. You also let me buy Ninja Gaiden 2 half price.
Good I say. Maybe this will stop GAME from charging over the RRP for things when they have forced a shortage at other stores due to their massive buying power.
They also break street dates as a matter of driving out independants. Maybe this will at least give the game industry the choice to tell GAME to stuff themselves when they act illegaly.
Fucking right, GAME as a company are abysmal, a real bunch of assholes in management and upper management never mind the CEO. As someone who gave over two years in what you could consider a performing store the practices by my then manager would make you sick.
I say we need a war on the high streets here and if GameStop came here I'd welcome them with open arms, this isnt a case of better the devil you know but save_us from that bunch of money grabbing asshats.
I mean they try and swarmilly sell you insurance on your consoles covering them for "3 Years from purchase" especially since you are covered anyway by the manufacturers guarantee for at least one year and for the 360 didnt Microsoft extend that to 3 years???
I'm actually looking foward to this if it happens as when game bought gamestation there was no more comp and they're prices have been steadly rising since then.As long as it ends in a stalemate that is,as weirdwolf said who ever wins ... we lose
@kelder: I agree - before they were brought out, If I found a game too pricey in GAME, i could pop over to Gamestation to see if there was a cheaper copy I could buy and visa versa, but now they're basically the same stores, but with different names. I think Gamestop could offer some much needed competition in the UK Game Retail Industry
