Just a couple of weeks ago, I paid $79.99 for a USB N adaptor for my PC, so this does not seem terribly overpriced. I guess this is at least one advantage to having the wi-fi separate. As wi-fi tech improves, you have the ability to upgrade. I for one though, don't use wi-fi for online gaming. Packet loss is your enemy. I use ethernet to both my 360's and I used ethernet to my PS3 until it died. The only console I use wi-fi on is the Wii... but then I've never played online with it either. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

Or you could just go down to Costco and pick one up off the shelf right now. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

I hope this means the old model will fall to only a few times what it's worth. Now my 360 is the only current system I have that doesn't have wifi, but it always screws up Azureus/Vuze when it accesses the net through my PC.

The PS3, Wii, PSP, DS, iPod Touch, and even my XO-1 - a cheap laptop for kids in developing countries - has built-in Wifi. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

@fuchikoma: Built-in Wifi isn't always the way to go. It's no secret that Wireless-N runs many times faster on an N-Exclusive network than a Mixed Mode network, so keeping those devices which run on legacy bands unable to do anything about it because the WiFi is built in will only bog down your network as a whole. It probably doesn't mean that much to you but hey, it matters to some. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

@Synthos: That's true, and I imagine it may be of a little bit of benefit to 360 users who use their 360 as a media center - at least for copying files, since G will handle pretty much any HD video... but I don't know of many places where an internet connection would be fast enough to benefit from going G to N.

The issue though is that everything else that could use Wifi now has it, and costs a fairly reasonable amount, where bringing the 360 up to that minimum functionality costs almost a hundred dollars. I'd be happy if it even had an old 802.11b chipset in it - that would be plenty for gaming. There's also no reason you couldn't alternately use an external adapter to upgrade as they are now. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

@fuchikoma: Yeah, I agree having a built-in chipset with an option to use an alternative add-on would be the perfect solution. Sadly, no manufacturer seems to be on their game with add-on devices this go round. I've never been a fan of wireless gaming though for the whole packet scenario, I like to really juice performance, that and I frequently use my 360 as a media center for HD content (Guessing I'm one of the few).

Even with Microsoft's insane strategy of raping the consumer's pockets through add-ons, N has it's benefits not just in speed, it uses an entirely different frequency which makes it a lot less susceptible to packet dropping and interference so I guess if I had to game over wireless, I'd go with N just to be safe. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

    ooh... 5GHz....

    but eh 100 bucks

    No thank you.

As it stands, my current setup using a G router in the living room to wirelessly connect to my main N router in my office works great. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

I'm completely confused. What is the difference between this one and the old one other than it comes in black and has two antennae instead of one? #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

@Rocketknight: Wireless N supports operation on a different band (5ghz) than the last adapter (2.4ghz). Wireless N generally is known for larger ranges and better speed.

If you do not have a Wireless N router though it will just function as a G adapter with two antennae instead of one. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

Wow Crecente, read Kotaku much? MS stated on the dashboard that the last update was to accomodate the new wireless N adapter. I was wondering what the question mark was for... :p #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

How does it increase the wireless security of the adapter? WPA2 which the original adapter supports is pretty much as secure as you can get on a wireless connection. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

For those of you in the UK. Joystiq have an article about it selling for £49 in ASDA. Not a bad price.

@kearneybobs: For the UK, that is an awesome price and is in fact better than the US price. £49 = $82.00 atm.

Usually it seems as if everything there is 10-50% more expensive than here in the US. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

@kearneybobs: It seems the ASDA are selling both adapters for the same price, I think this might be some kind of mistake.

Will pop round by ASDA on my way how to find out though. #wirelessnnetworkadaptor

I almost bought this a while ago, but then found out that you could just share a connection from a wireless-receiving laptop.

SFIV works with minimal lag, too! #wirelessnnetworkadaptor
