PlayStation 3 owners are reporting that their copies of the SCEE developed hoverracer are locking up, with users pointing to larger friend lists as a potential source of the problem. We contacted Sony PR to find out more.

"Following the release of WipEout HD on PLAYSTATION Store yesterday, we’ve been following the reports by some members of the community regarding problems with game freezes," SCEA reps confirmed. "We’d like to reassure you all that the WipEout team is working hard to resolve this issue as quickly as possible."

As far as the cause, SCEA tells us that anything we might have read about the source of the issue is, at this point, "rumor and speculation." It is worth noting though, that some WipEout HD players are noting that they're having better luck with a leaner friend list. Just sayin'.

<![CDATA[ Play WipeOut HD, Your Life/Brain Is In Your Own Hands ]]> Don't think it was ever confirmed confirmed, but it was strongly suggested that WipeOut HD's lengthy delay was the result of the game failing epilepsy tests. That suggestion looks pretty likely today, with the news that the game's going to ship with the mother of all epilepsy warnings at the front. Every time you play the game, you'll have to scroll through a large warning message that goes above and beyond what you'd normally expect, with the message dealing mostly with the games "flashing or flickering lights or geometric shapes and patterns". If you're sensitive to that sort of stuff, be warned.

<![CDATA[ WipeOut HD Not Only Priced, But Dated As Well ]]> WipeOut HD is a "coming sometime in the future" game no more. Sony have announced when the game will be out, and friends, it will be out soon. September 25, to be precise, and when out on September 25 will set you back $20. For that $20 you're getting, amongst other things, 8 tracks, splitscreen racing (offline only) for two players, or if you're up for a bigger challenge, 8-player online multiplayer.

<![CDATA[ WipeOut HD Priced (For Britain) ]]> WipeOut HD should be coming out later this year. It's meant to, anyways, but with this game, you can never be too sure. Anyway, when it does (hopefully) come out later this year, we now know how much it'll cost: £11.99. Which works out to be USD$21, AUD$26, ¥2,260 and, for our South African readers, 172 Rand. You'll need to adjust for local store variations when it hits, though, so expect the US price to be a little lower and the Australian to maybe be a little higher.

<![CDATA[ Wipeout HD One-Year Anniversary Impressions ]]> It's been a year since we first went hands on with Wipeout HD, the (eventual) PlayStation Network release that acts as a sort of remastered greatest hits comp from the series' past decade. The SCEE developed racer may have looked pretty sharp the last time we saw it, but it looks light years beyond that now.

So, happy anniversary Wipeout HD! We got you the traditional gift — hands-on impressions!

The presentation has received a noticeable amount of polish over the past year, with a more informative heads up display, slick new menus, a feature rich photo mode and additional graphical effects. Lighting and shadows look softer and more realistic, with ships more layered in sci-fi eye-candy than before.

When we played Wipeout HD at the previous Games Convention, we were limited to just a few racing teams and tracks. This year, we had access to the first portion of the campaign mode, with a broader selection of vehicles and paint jobs.

The campaign is stuffed with opportunities to win medals, with challenges based on lonely time trials — full race or a single lap — and competitive races against a line-up of CPU opponents.

Splitscreen is also in, with both horizontal and vertical layouts that should make every Wipeout fan happy.

Gameplay was largely the same, given that the Wipeout HD is a remake. That said, the game feels like more of a full-fledged release, now that it's been given additional time in the incubator. It's looking like it's going to be worth the wait.

<![CDATA[ Sexy New WipEout HD Screens ]]> We enjoyed the hell out of a pre-release Wipeout HD at last year's Games Convention. But the PlayStation Network release is looking noticeably more impressive in its showing this year, what with its fancy pants new menus and graphical upgrades. We sat down with the PlayStation 3 game — which is hopefully coming soon — today to get an update on how its looking (sharp!) and how it plays (the same!), but we'll bore you with our hands-on impressions of Wipeout HD after we do more than just lose three races and clumsily navigate German language menus. How does tomorrow work for you? Excellent! Enjoy the new screens.

<![CDATA[ WipEout HD Delayed So They Can Add Loads Of New Stuff ]]> As you can tell by the fact you still can’t buy it, WipEout HD has been delayed. Rumours suggest the reason for the hold-up could be epilepsy tests, it could be glitchy online play, it could be anything and everything in between. But what do Sony have to say about the whole thing? They’ve got a very sensible answer:
The reason for the delay of WipEout HD on PS3 has been due to the many improvements we have been making and the numerous features we've added to the game. These include: 8 reverse tracks, 4 extra ships, 2 alternative HUDS, 2 Player offline split screen and XMB Trophy support. We look forward to sharing WipEout HD with you very soon.

Regarding the speculation about health issues, we can assure you that we take consumer safety very seriously and monitor it very carefully.

That last line doesn’t entirely rule out the epilepsy stuff, but that first paragraph is making the wait sound worth it regardless.

<![CDATA[ Is WipEout HD Failing An Epilepsy Test? ]]> Considering the version we played at TGS last September looked pretty slick, the continued absence of WipEout HD from the PSN is a puzzling one. SCEE's David Reeves said last week the delay is down to a "really, really tricky technical problem", but failed to go into specifics. What kind of problems can cause such a long delay? Here's a possibility: the game's failing important, necessary epilepsy tests. That notion was raised in the comments of our post, and have now been raised by CVG as well, though it's important to note that this is far from confirmed, and Sony have yet to comment on the claims. As far-fetched as they sound (it could just as easily be something like, oh, online MP issues).

<![CDATA[ WipEout HD Has "A Specific Technical Problem" ]]> One of the best PS3 games we've laid our hands on over the past 12 months has been the PSN version of classic PlayStation racer WipEout. It was playable all the way back at TGS, and has been playable at various events since, and yet at E3 this year, it was nowhere. No mention of it, no mention of a release date. So what gives? Looks as if while most of the game simply sings, some of it doesn't, with the game plagued by a "really, really tricky technical problem" that nobody at Sony has been able to fix. As a result, they're hoping the game will be out by Christmas, but just can't guarantee it. Bummer.

<![CDATA[ The PlayStation Network's Next Big Games ]]> The release of SOCOM Confrontation via the PlayStation Network this fall may have the mass appeal to be a digitally distributed "killer app" for the PlayStation fan base, but Sony has plenty of unique offerings over the next few months, some of which we are already intimately familiar with. Echochrome and Wipeout HD haven't been lacking in exposure, but MTV's Stephen Totilo goes hands-on with two more PSN originals, Elefunk and PixelJunk Monsters Encore to get a handle on what's next for the Store.

The dates MTV provides for the next four PSN showpieces match up pretty well with the leaked release schedule from a few weeks ago.

According to the report, it would appear that Echochrome may very well be bypassing a UMD release, opting for a download from the PC and PlayStation Stores. The hard copy release in Japan didn't exactly light a fire under the PSP community.

Quickie previews for the uninitiated await.

<![CDATA[ Don't Hate WipEout HD Because It's Beautiful ]]>

It's been a while since we've had our hands on WipEout HD, but if we ever had a bad thought about it, I wish we could take them all back. It's looking better and better every time the gang in Liverpool dishes out new media. A bit of a WipEout XL junkie back in the day, I simply cannot wait until this shows up on the PlayStation Store for a proper online race. The HD version at GameTrailers certainly does the whole more justice than the one above.

<![CDATA[ WipeOut HD Features Custom Soundtracks ]]> I know, it's not the first PS3 game to feature custom soundtracks, but this isn't some cheap bowling game we're talking about here. This is WipeOut. A game for whom music played a big, big part in its success back on the PS1. SCEE blog Three Speech sends word that while the game's bundled soundtrack includes appropriate artists such as Kraftwerk, you'll also be able to create custom playlists from any songs you've got stored on your PS3's HDD.

<![CDATA[ New WipEout HD Screens ]]> A nice little gallery of screens here from WipEout HD which will be gracing the PlayStation Store soon. The game will be presented in full 1080p, running at 60fps and will be made up of reworked tracks from previous WipEout titles. Looks pretty good—although I wonder about the giant panda head with the "X" eyes. It just seems wrong somehow. Make the jump to check out the list of tracks!

Vineta K - On the southern shores of Makana Island, the circuit at Vineta K snakes in and out of the ocean and across the beaches. The highlights of this 4.4 km track include spectacular underwater tunnels and cutting-edge architecture along the waterfront.

Chenghou Project -The feature-packed circuit at Chenghou Project weaves its way around the offices and corporate buildings of Makana Island's business district. The 4.8 km track contains a tricky inverse-cambered spiral and culminates in a long jump into the tunnelled entry of the final chicane.

Sebenco Climb - The 4.8 km Sebenco Climb track is cut into the hillsides of Makana's Sebenco mountain range. It features a steep traverse up the snowy mountainside, followed by a breathtaking plunge into an icy tunnel carved through the very heart of the mountain. The final section takes pilots through a challengingly tight chicane before they swing back onto the grid.

Sol 2 - The 4.4 km Sol 2 circuit hangs suspended in the clouds high above Makana Island. Consisting of a series of fast-flowing, occasionally open-sided corners linked by sweeping straights, the combination of harsh sunlight and blind summits ensure that Sol 2 is a test of nerve for every speed class.

Ubermall - In the heart of Makana Island's commercial zone is Ubermall, a 4.6 km circuit built into a vast shopping centre. The latter half of the track contains a brief split which rejoins into a narrow hill, followed by an outdoor park section that leads swiftly to the finish.

Anulpha Pass - The 5 km Anulpha Pass track is located in a custom-built entertainment arena on the east side of Makana Island. Although the track looks deceptively simple from above, the undulations of the track surface and narrow skill-cut are enough to keep any racer on their toes.

Moa Therma - The immense man-made complex of Moa Therma is located just off the northern coast of Sicily, with around a third of the track surface built using mag-strip technology. The centrepiece of this 5.3 km circuit is the gigantic horizontal loop which sits just above sea level.

Metropia - The 4.7 km Metropia circuit weaves its way between the skyscrapers and traffic control towers that dominate the Kyoto skyline. Glass-bottomed track surfaces and a stunning vertical mag-strip drop into the depths of the city are just two of the highlights of this popular track.

<![CDATA[ WipEout HD Hands-On Impressions ]]> Sony had a half-dozen or so demo stations featuring the PlayStation Network racer WipEout HD for the PLAYSTATION 3 at Games Convention, comfortably placed in front of golden toilet seats. The 1080p, sixty frames per second remake features some of the best moments from past WipeOuts, layering a lifetime of features on top of well known mechanics, aesthetics and locations.

Two teams were available, Feisar and AG Systems, but a number of other cars from different organizations, all familiar to WipEout vets. Only a pair of tracks were available in the demo, the Chenghou Project from and Anulpha Pass, both from WipEout Pure. Each track could be raced in either Venom class or the more challenging Flash class, with increased speed and extra laps.

WipEout HD simply takes the futuristic racing series' greatest hits and brings them into high definition. Environments look crisp and clear, moving at a super smooth clip. There were no drops in frame rate in my eight or nine racing attempts. Yes, it's high def, but this looks more like a PlayStation Network remake than a "next-gen" WipEout—and there's certainly nothing wrong with that.

Loads of new graphical tricks, including improved lighting, a gorgeous new honeycomb-like shield, and little touches like well modeled turbines viewable through exhaust ports. Video screens and lighted billboards feature soft, respectable amounts of bloom lighting. All these touches make it far better looking that WipEout Fusion on the PlayStation 2, but we still look forward to SCEE's build from the ground up future WipEouts. Weapon effects are less impressive but now we're venturing into nitpicking.

WipEout HD's heads-up display benefits from its high resolution, allowing screen real estate to be less obscured and giving players better data about power ups. You'll be able to easily and quickly look at your current item, determine how much energy you'll receive from absorbing it or how much damage you'll do to a rival. There's also a pair of proximity indicators, showing not only who's coming up behind you, but also giving your early warning about mines ahead of you on the track and impending attacks from the rear. Very handy.

In short, it looks like a fine remedy to WipEout fans looking for something to tide them over until the next official sequel hits the PS3. Even though the code at Games Convention was pre-alpha, I know I'll be adding digital funds to my wallet and securing it on day one.

<![CDATA[ WipeOut HD Demo Ready For Leipzig Games Convention ]]> A new listing added to the German equivalent of the ESRB, the USK, reveals that a demo for Sony Liverpool's PlayStation Network release of WipeOut HD will be available at the Leipzig Games Convention. Formally announced at E3 2007, with a release date before the end of the year, WipeOut HD promises hi-def visuals and familiar WipeOut tracks for the PLAYSTATION 3. Let's hope that Sony is planning to release the full game not long after its showing at Games Convention (and that my plane back to the States is on-time and lands safely).

<![CDATA[ Wipeout HD By End Of 2007 ]]> 1UP is reporting that Wipeout Pulse game director Tony Buckley has revealed that Wipeout HD, a PlayStation Network title, should make an appearance on the PLAYSTATION 3 before calendar year 2008. That's just about the worst kept secret on the Sony front, as Buckley was dropping none-too-subtle hints about how "stonking" a PS3-bound Wipeout in high definition would be just days ago to Kikizo.

This is, of course, a separate product from the "real" Wipeout sequel for the PS3, which is said to be announced in August. I'm guessing probably August 23rd. Possibly in the Leipzig region.

While I'm personally a casual fan of the Wipeout series and would look forward to the online multiplayer-ready futuristic racer, I'm starting to see a trend here. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Wipeout HD, SOCOM Confrontation—all stopgap releases while we wait for the real new-gen iterations. Shit, there I go, complaining about PS3 releases again. Really need to put a cork in that.
