It'll be out in Europe on October 16, and priced at £20 (USD$33). Even allowing for a wonky exchange rate, that's a great price.

No word on an American release, but then, it's a PS3 disc. If it's not released in the US, feel free to import to your heart's content.

<![CDATA[Sony Scraps WipeOut HD Loading Ad]]> The people have spoken. Spoken angrily. And Sony have listened, removing the worst of the in-game advertising from WipeOut HD only 24 hours after it was first officially announced.

"The ad has been removed from WipEout HD", a Sony rep told Eurogamer, "and we are investigating the situation to ensure that any in-game advertising does not affect gameplay".

Note this doesn't mean all advertising in the game has been removed; only the ad that was causing the annoying, increased load times.

<![CDATA[WipEout HD Gets Loading Screen Ads, Adds User Fury]]> In-game advertiser Double Fusion announced today that it was bringing "dynamic video advertisements" to WipEout HD, ads that owners of the PlayStation Network racer have been experiencing (and grumbling about) over the past week.

Those video ads began appearing during WipEout HD's loading screens, presenting players with a video spot that, in some cases, appears to be pitching State Farm Insurance. That advertising looks to be limited to U.S. based owners of WipEout HD for now, a new addition that may have been introduced during the game's recent software update.

While the annoyance of in-game ads may be written off as nothing more than virtual visual blight, justifiably bothersome are accusations that the new ads increase loading times between races. Double Fusion boasts that the ads "contextually match the game's sleek futuristic design" and "complement the WipEout HD world seamlessly," but some players disagree. One YouTube video of WipEout HD's ads shows this in action, a surprising difference that we've yet to verify for ourselves.

Advertising in the WipEout series isn't exactly new, with entries as far back as WipEout 2097 sporting a noticeable presence for energy drink Red Bull, not to mention the design houses that were responsible for the games' visual style.

We have contacted Sony Computer Entertainment America to see what's up with WipEout HD's new ads.

Thanks to Caleb and Gabriel for the heads up.

<![CDATA[WipEout HD Fury Add-on Drops Next Week]]> Three new race types, twelve new tracks, thirteen new ships, and six new music tracks are coming to WipEout HD next week, when the Fury add-on pack hits the PlayStation Store.

Thursday, June 23rd is when the WipEout HD Fury pack races onto the PlayStation Network, trailing along tons of new game play in its wake. Eliminator, Zone Battle, and Detonator game modes bring new ways to do battle in the PSN version of the futuristic racing series, while an all-new campaign, new trophies, and new online ranks will keep players driving, and striving, and hugging the turns.

Two days before the pack hits there will be a free update to the game, which will add a new statistics system while tweaking the menu system and adding some enhanced community features.

Basically, the face of WipEout HD changes next week, either a little for free, or a whole lot for $9.99. Your choice!

<![CDATA[New WipEout HD Update Is Gonna Need Its Own Update]]> PlayStation Network racer WipEout HD got a slew of new features today, thanks to an update that brought about new features like badges, friend invites, and a ranking overhaul. But it's also a little buggy.

WipEout HD report that they're experiencing some issues following the 1.30 update, with the PlayStation 3 game bugging out when trying to load autosave data. While that's an annoyance, there is, thankfully, a workaround.

According to posters on the official PlayStation forums, it seems to be related to your PlayStation Network log in. To get around that, simply....

1. Sign out of PSN.
2. Launch the game.
3. Choose "Online" from the main menu, letting it sign you in to the PSN.
4. Acknowledge the release notes for the 1.30 patch.
5. Wait for the game to auto-save.

Hopefully, Sony and the WipEout HD team will have version 1.31 out the door in no time.

<![CDATA[WipeOut HD Update Brings Ranks And Badges]]> Releasing tomorrow on the PlayStation Network, the latest update for WipeOut HD brings a new ranking system to online multiplayer games, along with flashy new badges to celebrate your racing prowess.

Online multiplayer gets a bit more competitive tomorrow as Sony introduces 50 ranks to WipeOut HD, giving players a little something more to race for. Along with the rankings, a new podium screen appears after each race, where players regardless of placing can earn any of 33 different badges based on how they performed.

A bit more competitive, but a bit more friendly as well, with the addition of friend invites, finally allowing players to invite their pals or join them in their own matches, already in progress. Speaking of in progress, joining a game in progress now allows players to watch the action in spectator mode, rather than simply waiting in the lobby while everyone else finishes.

Some excellent changes, though arguably features that should have been in the game from the get go. Still, a free update is a free update, and if you've been on the fence about whether or not you should snatch up the game, perhaps these changes will push you off into oncoming traffic.

<![CDATA[WipEout HD Leaves The Garage A Bit Buggy]]> The release of WipEout HD was a long time a-comin' and, unfortunately, its launch on the PlayStation Store is not without its problems. PlayStation 3 owners are reporting that their copies of the SCEE developed hoverracer are locking up, with users pointing to larger friend lists as a potential source of the problem. We contacted Sony PR to find out more.

"Following the release of WipEout HD on PLAYSTATION Store yesterday, we’ve been following the reports by some members of the community regarding problems with game freezes," SCEA reps confirmed. "We’d like to reassure you all that the WipEout team is working hard to resolve this issue as quickly as possible."

As far as the cause, SCEA tells us that anything we might have read about the source of the issue is, at this point, "rumor and speculation." It is worth noting though, that some WipEout HD players are noting that they're having better luck with a leaner friend list. Just sayin'.

<![CDATA[Play WipeOut HD, Your Life/Brain Is In Your Own Hands]]> Don't think it was ever confirmed confirmed, but it was strongly suggested that WipeOut HD's lengthy delay was the result of the game failing epilepsy tests. That suggestion looks pretty likely today, with the news that the game's going to ship with the mother of all epilepsy warnings at the front. Every time you play the game, you'll have to scroll through a large warning message that goes above and beyond what you'd normally expect, with the message dealing mostly with the games "flashing or flickering lights or geometric shapes and patterns". If you're sensitive to that sort of stuff, be warned.

<![CDATA[WipeOut HD Not Only Priced, But Dated As Well]]> WipeOut HD is a "coming sometime in the future" game no more. Sony have announced when the game will be out, and friends, it will be out soon. September 25, to be precise, and when out on September 25 will set you back $20. For that $20 you're getting, amongst other things, 8 tracks, splitscreen racing (offline only) for two players, or if you're up for a bigger challenge, 8-player online multiplayer.

<![CDATA[WipeOut HD Priced (For Britain)]]> WipeOut HD should be coming out later this year. It's meant to, anyways, but with this game, you can never be too sure. Anyway, when it does (hopefully) come out later this year, we now know how much it'll cost: £11.99. Which works out to be USD$21, AUD$26, ¥2,260 and, for our South African readers, 172 Rand. You'll need to adjust for local store variations when it hits, though, so expect the US price to be a little lower and the Australian to maybe be a little higher.

<![CDATA[Wipeout HD One-Year Anniversary Impressions]]> It's been a year since we first went hands on with Wipeout HD, the (eventual) PlayStation Network release that acts as a sort of remastered greatest hits comp from the series' past decade. The SCEE developed racer may have looked pretty sharp the last time we saw it, but it looks light years beyond that now.

So, happy anniversary Wipeout HD! We got you the traditional gift — hands-on impressions!

The presentation has received a noticeable amount of polish over the past year, with a more informative heads up display, slick new menus, a feature rich photo mode and additional graphical effects. Lighting and shadows look softer and more realistic, with ships more layered in sci-fi eye-candy than before.

When we played Wipeout HD at the previous Games Convention, we were limited to just a few racing teams and tracks. This year, we had access to the first portion of the campaign mode, with a broader selection of vehicles and paint jobs.

The campaign is stuffed with opportunities to win medals, with challenges based on lonely time trials — full race or a single lap — and competitive races against a line-up of CPU opponents.

Splitscreen is also in, with both horizontal and vertical layouts that should make every Wipeout fan happy.

Gameplay was largely the same, given that the Wipeout HD is a remake. That said, the game feels like more of a full-fledged release, now that it's been given additional time in the incubator. It's looking like it's going to be worth the wait.

<![CDATA[Sexy New WipEout HD Screens]]> We enjoyed the hell out of a pre-release Wipeout HD at last year's Games Convention. But the PlayStation Network release is looking noticeably more impressive in its showing this year, what with its fancy pants new menus and graphical upgrades. We sat down with the PlayStation 3 game — which is hopefully coming soon — today to get an update on how its looking (sharp!) and how it plays (the same!), but we'll bore you with our hands-on impressions of Wipeout HD after we do more than just lose three races and clumsily navigate German language menus. How does tomorrow work for you? Excellent! Enjoy the new screens.

<![CDATA[WipEout HD Delayed So They Can Add Loads Of New Stuff]]> As you can tell by the fact you still can’t buy it, WipEout HD has been delayed. Rumours suggest the reason for the hold-up could be epilepsy tests, it could be glitchy online play, it could be anything and everything in between. But what do Sony have to say about the whole thing? They’ve got a very sensible answer:

The reason for the delay of WipEout HD on PS3 has been due to the many improvements we have been making and the numerous features we've added to the game. These include: 8 reverse tracks, 4 extra ships, 2 alternative HUDS, 2 Player offline split screen and XMB Trophy support. We look forward to sharing WipEout HD with you very soon.

Regarding the speculation about health issues, we can assure you that we take consumer safety very seriously and monitor it very carefully.

That last line doesn’t entirely rule out the epilepsy stuff, but that first paragraph is making the wait sound worth it regardless.

<![CDATA[Is WipEout HD Failing An Epilepsy Test?]]> Considering the version we played at TGS last September looked pretty slick, the continued absence of WipEout HD from the PSN is a puzzling one. SCEE's David Reeves said last week the delay is down to a "really, really tricky technical problem", but failed to go into specifics. What kind of problems can cause such a long delay? Here's a possibility: the game's failing important, necessary epilepsy tests. That notion was raised in the comments of our post, and have now been raised by CVG as well, though it's important to note that this is far from confirmed, and Sony have yet to comment on the claims. As far-fetched as they sound (it could just as easily be something like, oh, online MP issues).

<![CDATA[WipEout HD Has "A Specific Technical Problem"]]> One of the best PS3 games we've laid our hands on over the past 12 months has been the PSN version of classic PlayStation racer WipEout. It was playable all the way back at TGS, and has been playable at various events since, and yet at E3 this year, it was nowhere. No mention of it, no mention of a release date. So what gives? Looks as if while most of the game simply sings, some of it doesn't, with the game plagued by a "really, really tricky technical problem" that nobody at Sony has been able to fix. As a result, they're hoping the game will be out by Christmas, but just can't guarantee it. Bummer.

<![CDATA[The PlayStation Network's Next Big Games]]> The release of SOCOM Confrontation via the PlayStation Network this fall may have the mass appeal to be a digitally distributed "killer app" for the PlayStation fan base, but Sony has plenty of unique offerings over the next few months, some of which we are already intimately familiar with. Echochrome and Wipeout HD haven't been lacking in exposure, but MTV's Stephen Totilo goes hands-on with two more PSN originals, Elefunk and PixelJunk Monsters Encore to get a handle on what's next for the Store.

The dates MTV provides for the next four PSN showpieces match up pretty well with the leaked release schedule from a few weeks ago.

According to the report, it would appear that Echochrome may very well be bypassing a UMD release, opting for a download from the PC and PlayStation Stores. The hard copy release in Japan didn't exactly light a fire under the PSP community.

Quickie previews for the uninitiated await.

<![CDATA[WipeOut HD Hopefully Coming In "Q2"]]> You can keep your Pixeljunks and your skydivings and your ridiculously-spelled fl0wing. There's only one PSN game I'm interested in. And that's WipeOut HD (OK, that and Everyday Shooter). While previous press material had the game pegged for a Q4 release (nnnoooooooo!), SCEE reps have today said they're actually aiming for a Q2 release (yyyyaaayyyyy!).

<![CDATA[Don't Hate WipEout HD Because It's Beautiful]]>

It's been a while since we've had our hands on WipEout HD, but if we ever had a bad thought about it, I wish we could take them all back. It's looking better and better every time the gang in Liverpool dishes out new media. A bit of a WipEout XL junkie back in the day, I simply cannot wait until this shows up on the PlayStation Store for a proper online race. The HD version at GameTrailers certainly does the whole more justice than the one above.

<![CDATA[WipeOut HD Features Custom Soundtracks]]> I know, it's not the first PS3 game to feature custom soundtracks, but this isn't some cheap bowling game we're talking about here. This is WipeOut. A game for whom music played a big, big part in its success back on the PS1. SCEE blog Three Speech sends word that while the game's bundled soundtrack includes appropriate artists such as Kraftwerk, you'll also be able to create custom playlists from any songs you've got stored on your PS3's HDD.
