I'm torn. On one hand the fact that its online and has the track creator is awesome. On the other the lack of splitscreen is bad. I remember playing the original with my brother on the NES all the time.
@excel_excel: Or you are a robot whose brains have been replaced with false memories in order to keep you from going on a killing spree. And in any case you are probably standing over a mound of bodies at this very moment. RUN!
Hope to see it soon in Europe. No one talks about it, but we have yet to see any Wiiware game from High Voltage... I REALLY want to play "Gyrostarr". Since "Excitebots" from Monster Games never got to Europe either... I do hope this makes it this week.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: I agree. Not that I wouldn't WANT local multiplay but I don't see how it could be implemented very well... What if 3 people are in a tight race but one is sucking? Keep panning out? NO. Then you can't see. Force the back person forward? NO. That limits the consequences of error. Keep the person in back off screen? NO. How are they supposed to catch up or enjoy the game if they can't even see...
While I like the idea of local multiplay I just don't see a simple way to implement it. I can't see splitscreen being a viable option either. I suppose it would be the only mildly functional one, though.
@bwwardiii: They call it split-screen. It works very well for titles like this. Explain, if you will, how it is not viable. Remember four-player split screen FPSs? I've played many a Four-Player split-screen races in PGR.
These are certainly viable options. So... Can you back up your claim that it's not "viable?"
Most gamers nowadays have big ass TV's anyway, so split screen would work lovely. Like I said, Monster Games should program a local multiplay mode and charge like 200 points for it...support up to 4 players. I'd drop 200 points for it in a hearbeat.
@Cochese: Now with moxie.: The race is sidescrolling. I just don't see myself enjoying a screen split into 4 and having 4 different sidescrolling races going on. However that may just be me and I may just have the wrong sort of picture in my head.
I suppose it could sell. And in that sense it would be worth doing, I suppose. I used the word "viable" incorrectly as I'm sure they could do it with their resources. I just felt it wouldn't be fun to play the splits-creen. In both of your examples the camera either IS the player or is behind them. In both games you basically just get to see the most important part, what's in front of you. How sidescrolling games have had split-screen? I always thought that it wasn't many.
In a game where the camera is to the side of the player much more space is needed to allow the player the feeling of freedom of motion while also letting them see enough of the environment to move through the game in a successful and fun way.
Again. I think it COULD be done and MIGHT sell pretty well. I'd enjoy local multiplayer. I just don't see split-screen as a very good option for a sidescrolling racer.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: You could do it Micro Machines style. If one rider falls back too far, he gets transported back into the game - but with a penalty of some kind.
Sure took Nintendo a long time to emulate the DSP chip on their VC software... 3 years! Makes me think they might have just requested help from the emulation scene. Still, nice to see this and Pilotwings hitting the SNES VC.
@Shiryu: sorry dude, i'm older. Zsnes achieved DSP emulation in 1997. Thats when i started playing roms on my old 486 and mario kart was one of my first games.
Though i first tried snes9x, but when i found znes, i never looked back to it!!!
1997 was when I got Internet at home, 1996 was the first time I got ZSNES, was version 0.300, the first one with correct transparencies emulation. FF6 only looked good on that, SNES9x came much later with them, mostly colabs between authors of ZSNES to implement the coDe. the DSP code for Mario Kart was also ported from ZSNES to SNES9x. Good times... now BSNES rules supreme. I am indeed old for remebering all of this. #speakup
@Shiryu: dam, beat me to it. i got internet till 1997, but i began emulation in 1996, with gb97. I was working as an apprentice of a computer technical on a goberment department, and in one of the pc's i gave support (just running a antivirus program) i found this folder with gameboy as a name, was pretty curious and checked, then i saw this files, zelda.gb, kirby.gb, mario.gb, kof96.gb and i was like, what is this, decided to copy the whole thing to a 31/2 1.44mb floppy disk and brought to my house. found the readme text file and i was mind blowed by what i found!!!!
later in 97 i got internet in my house and the first thing i looked for was "snes roms" on altavista. and that how it all started, xDDDDDDD
@cjlopez: Good times... I don't think its piracy at all, but of course this is questionable. The fact was that even if I was in pure bliss with my PSX, the truth is that being a gamer in Europe, or even worse, in Portugal meant that I knew all about those amazing SNES games out in the States and Japan that never saw the light of day in Europe. Playing from one end to the other of "Final Fantasy VI" and "Chrono Trigger" were priorities. Truly, we were really bady served over here in Europe in those times... I had my revenge, then. =)
Will download Super Mario Kart, I actually enjoyed that version more than all the later ones. I also remember it being the best Christmas in 1992 when I was 12 when I got it. :)
@mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta: Dude, show some respect fr the karts, it was one of the best (well... the only thing remotely similar to ) car racing games of the moment. Even stunt race lacked the beauty and cleverness of those banana peels. damn banana peels....
It'll always be one of the best, cause it's not a matter of polygons, cockpits and physics, it's all about the boost mushrooms.

@Mr. Pie. Also Known As Mr. Pumpkin!: I guess I meant to say Super Mario Kart. The DS Mario Kart is nearly the greatest game ever to bear Mario's name.
Biggest problem with this is you can't just violently swing your wiimote to point at your TV to throw out an objection. Or slam your Wiimote into your desk.... or slap it against a piece of paper repeatedly....
Yeah if you gave it motion controls you'd just break too much stuff.
I don't understand why people are surprised. Phoenix Wright, as great as it is, is a niche game that has never really sold all that well. The huge investment in cost to redo all the art meant they probably would have lost money on the release.
So, your options are to get the release and hope that more people enjoy the game so that future releases sell or to not get the game and to let the franchise die in obscurity.
@jayntampa: The art has been redone - the PC port a few years ago has slightly redone art. Capcom could've used that, but some think that would've gone past the WiiWare size limit.
Also, the game is niche here, but not in it's native Japan. It wouldn't "die in obscurity."
@jayntampa: The game is fun and is worth playing. Playing the whole series and taking in the story left me with satisfaction that I have never before felt in a game before. Everything came around full circle, and it was a wonderful experience.
Why is it always the people with tits for avatars that have these divisive opinionated comments?
@xybur: First off, what the hell are you talking about? My post is hardly divisive. Second, I call the game great! Third, what the hell does anything have to do with my avatar? It's my gf (who is also a commenter here), and was placed up there in response to Ashcraft's jubblies post rampage a few years back. My friends on here suggested I keep it since it was easy to recognize me.

@jayntampa The PC port, when sent to TV through the 480p Wii would still look pretty close to this. Do a search for some of the PC images -- they weren't high res, unless there there has been a new update I'm unaware of. Check out the jaggies on the PC: [gaygamer.net]
And, I realize it's extremely popular in Japan, but it's obscure in the US -- that's all I was referring to. It's clear that it will continue in it's native land, but it isn't Phoenix Wright there, is it? :) I would love to see it be hugely popular here, I love all the games.
@jayntampa: That's what I'm saying, you're purporting the game is obscure here, but it really isn't. The game is pretty well known around here, and is popular amongst people who own DS', so I'm not sure where you're getting your figures from.
I misunderstood your intention in your posts because of that, and obviously seeing the tits didn't help your cause.
@jayntampa: You're right about the graphics in the pc ver of PW. The screenshot w/ the high res is probably a promo image because that is the only one I have seen on various websites. However, images of the game previewd on various sites shows that the computer ver has the low res pics.
If you do not believe those are the images of the pc port, the official Phoenix wright japanese site shows actual screen grabs.
@xybur: Ok, let's just hit some numbers -- the last Ace Attorney game sold about 200,000 in the US ... a successful DS game, but not hugely known.
Petz Dogz 2 sold over 450,000 in the US.
Phoenix Wright is well-known among hardcore gamers and people that like niche games from Japan. But, the general gaming public doesn't know the series.
@jayntampa: When I got my sister the first game for her birthday, it was in a bargain bin at GameStop wth a bunch of lousy titles surrounding it.
Quality aside - and trust me, the game's worth owning and playing - GameStop usually doesn't put games into those bins if they sold overly well.
I agree with you - Phoenix Wright is a niche title at best (and for anyone who hasn't realized it, we're the niche), and remaking the game or doing a full-blown retail release isn't in Capcom's best interest.
I just remembered that I pretty much have an obligation to comment on any PW post.
Ahem.
I'm going to be buying this, despite having played the actual game three times already. I will buy it, and I will yell out my objections regardless of what time of night I'm playing, and I will have damn good time doing it.
I have always dreamed of seeing Edgeworth on my television. He is closer to me now that he is larger.
Nice disparity in the artwork-resolution.
If you're gonna be lazy and just reuse graphics from a portable console, don't be stupid enough to throw in a high-res graphic at one place to show everyone what you COULD'VE done with a little effort. Because it's gonna look crap and not really show you in a favorable light.

Nintendo needs to put up the import version: Excitebike VS., the Famicom Disc System exclusive that allowed local multiplay.
Or, they could, for once, put up like a 200 point DLC to allow local play in hindsight. I would buy that.

Fahey: Yeah...Werehog.
