I recently hacked mine to load games from an external HD. I may be in the minority, but it contains only games which I've purchased. The discs are in a secure location away from the tiny fingers that used to smudge them. I love it.
huh. yeah, like many, since i went homebrew, ive not officially upgraded in a while, which sucks cause you kinda commit to only doing CIOS packages. i hope when i go buy a legit copy of NMH2, everything works out.
that said, either way id have the blue light off. its not liike i didnt like it, or minded the lack of messages anyway (heh), but ive read too much saying the residual heat wiiconnect24 creates can damage the system, despite its low voltage at that point, to justify leaving it on. either way, good for nintendo to have a patch ready.
@Chris Coonradt aka Pobregizmo: I think a lot of people would love to have this problem. I was actually disappointed when I learned I couldn't keep the blue light on all the time. Sorry I can't give you any advice.
@spiderweb1986: I'm with ya, brother.... I enjoyed the warm blue glow today =)
people that say the Wii sucks may not know what video games are.
if they did, and they didn't think the Wii had good games, then they either weren't looking hard enough, or they were too insecure to play something that wasn't in HD.
...which I guess is why the PS2 sucks?? oh no? well, I don't think so either. funny.
Homebrew channel is the only real way to be able to play legitimate games purchased from another region on the Wii now that the Freeloader's been deliberately broken, unless you install a modchip, which is illegal in many countries.
@spiderweb1986: Nah. Got it at launch. Still play it regularly. Still buy games new and not used or downloaded.
Admittedly, depending on release schedules, sometimes the PS3 or PC takes more of my time, but that's just the way things are.
And hell, I'll admit it. I am SUPER excited for Wii Sports Resort. It's got full 100 pin bowling. Not just a one off, but 10 frames of 100 pins each turn. I will gladly pay $50 for that.
It might not match up with something like Infamous or Overlord, but dammit, it's fun and sometimes that's all that matters.
@spiderweb1986: It really is unfortunate the way the Wii is being used these days. I'm honestly one of the people who complained about it--I wasn't using it anymore, so I sold mine. The online service was just terrible in my experience. I imagine if I played more locally, I'd still own my Wii, and play it more often, to this day...
@spiderweb1986: I'm actually waiting on The Conduit to arrive on Friday from GameFly with Little King's Story waiting in the wings. Meanwhile, I can't find anything for my 360 outside of more ranked matches in BlazBlue.
@Mastrix: Nothing per se...but a lot of the time, "homebrew" has other, less legal connotations. You CAN use it for strictly legal purposes...just like you can use DS flash carts or a PSP for custom firmware for strictly legal purposes.
@atomicstrawberry: Good point. I suspect you're in a minority, though - most of the people I know that use it for homebrew don't use it for imports.
@spiderweb1986: I've always been adverse to homebrew. I pay a lot of money for a console and could easily render it useless if I'm not careful.
I can see the appeal in it to those who enjoy tinkering with software, but I marvel at things simply functioning.
My PSP stays happily not hacked, and my Wii is normal. The only thing I am considering is putting a larger hard drive in my PS3 as that is practical and rapidly becoming necessary.
No, out in the real world, especially here in Europe and UK, people are just like you, and half the "Wii dust" people are just full of bull I'd guess. They dare not run against the popular theme here, but hey, peer pressure is tough for kids, at least, without a girlfriend.
I got the blue light, and updated immediately. Why not, it's not running homebrew. For that kind of thing, I've got dedicated hardware. My wife and kids will update the other 2 Wii units in the family later, pending Wii Sports Resort deliveries. :-)
For me, in Europe, most of my well paid mature professional colleagues with families (30-50 age group) have a Wii now, for them as well as the family. Same with friends. (One single colleague has an Xbox 360 too, and one has a PS3 Blue-Ray player for his family lounge too.)
Another colleague bought a Wii with Tiger Woods and Wii Motion+ at the weekend. The catalyst? Wii Motion+. He'd be planning it, but since he just got into golf, he got it. He went for a nice (Media Markt) bundle. He updated on connection, no doubt he will have done so today, something else to discuss over coffee.
I had to hope the update would make the Wii and DSi menus even more similar, since 2 of my 4 kids are lining up to get themselves a DSi upgrade since I got mine. (Still got that black DS Lite with the 9ct gold skin, thanks for the GBA port.)
Everybody I know that does still use their Wii has the Homebrew Channel. Otherwise, their Wii systems might as well just be there for show, draining away residual energy.
It's just a fact of life as far as I'm concerned. If I had the Homebrew Channel, I might still have my Wi. I just didn't want to take the risk (slim as it may be) of bricking my Wii, or having to send my Wii in for repairs again and Nintendo finding such things.
@spiderweb1986: I use my wii far more than my PS360 even without counting homebrew. But I also use the homebrew channel quite a lot for my hobbyprojects
I do miss the soothing glowing blue light that my wii gave off when i owned one. Unfortunately there weren't many games that I found that entertaining so I sold it off, and thus, no more blue light of comfort.
It seems kind of strange that they do an entire firmware update for the console to fix one game though. Does the Wii not do patches for specific games like the 360 does?
@PuppyGuarder: Or not, in my case. I'm a light sleeper, you see, and I don't enjoy having strange dreams about aliens in glowing blue spacecraft before waking up to a blue room at 2:30 in the morning.
It's still pretty cool, though, I must admit. While it pisses me off occasionally, I can't bring myself to turn that function off.
@tehdorkz: No, I don't believe it has the capability. I read some tech article a while back describing in detail why patching games retroactively is currently impossible.

There's no OS running in the background like on the PS360.
Gaaaaaa. That damn light scared the hell out of me. I was sitting alone in the dark, on my 3rd glass of port and about 3/5 of the way through .REC, and BOOM, blue light out of the corner of my eye.
Incidently, watch .REC. Scared the crap out of me. Granted, that could be the port talking...

A new game comes home, then it gets installed on my HDD where it loads faster and my disks are secure.
Plus, the interface for loading USB games is pretty great now!. Too bad some stuff doesn't yet work, like some of the Wii connect 24 features.

Am I the ONLY one who uses the console the way it was intended? Sure seems like it right now...

Hey I love my Wii, and I use it all the time. I have homebrew on it for things like running import games, for example WSR.

I use mine 100% legit, but i'm old-school and gainfully employed, so I have no reason to mod mine. I even turn mine on more than once in a blue moon.
It's the PS3 that sucks.

And I'm gonna get Wii Sports Resort.
But mine's not glowing blue!
