Haven't Ubisoft just announced that Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands? The trailer will be shown at the VGA's which will feature "many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series as well as new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand."

Companies need to figure out that Wii owners can be just as supportive of good games as those on any other platform. There's a reason we bought Metroid Prime and Punch-Out: those games are actually solid and fun to play. MadWorld and The Conduit sold like crap because they just aren't that good. When a developer goes and actually makes a quality product for the Wii, gamers will buy it.

Everyone is losing money on the Wii. Nobody buys Wii games, and third-party developers have been burned time and again. Whether publishers don't understand the Wii market, or people just don't buy new Wii games, third party publishers are eventually going to drop the Wii altogether.

The Wii is a gimmick. Always was, always will be- and it made Nintendo a lot of money. But ONLY Nintendo has made money, while everyone else who has developed for the Wii have been burned.

That means they'll drop it like its hot, focus on expanding core IP and building up popular franchise titles. EA is doing the same thing, as is Activision.

Oh, and Avatar is going to fail in theaters, as will the game. I'm calling it right now.

@TheOmnitron: Pretty sure Avatar is gonna make a killing bro. Big names (like James Cameron) and a hyperaggressive marketing campaign can and will buy success for an otherwise marginal release. An Avatar trailer made it to the Jerrytron (Cowboys stadium big screen) for a primetime screening for goodness sake.

I'd be shocked if that flick doesn't succeed by producers' standards. Expect the game to outperform expectations for the same reasons.

I'm not too sure. I've seen Avatar trailers aired in public met with
    "Space hippies"
    And
"WTF is this about?"Doesn't help that the film is a giant black hole of investor money. If it did okay for regular film standards it would be a collosal failure with its budget.

@D-K: Zack and Wiki is pretty fun. Wii Sports Resort is actually a lot of fun. As CockroachMan said, Metroid Prime 3 (or just the complete Trilogy if you haven't played the others, TONS of gameplay time and fun for your buck there). For the price, Link's Crossbow training that comes with the Zapper shell thing is actually a ton of fun too. Dead Space Extraction. House of the Dead Overkill is fun and has a great calibration options so where you aim is 1 to 1 correlation to the screen so you don't need to have the reticle on the screen to know where you are aiming. That's kinda nice. The Resident Evil on rail shooters aren't too bad either and have some nice story tidbits if you're a fan of the series. ExciteTrucks or ExcitBots are pretty fun crazy arcadey racing games.

If you're connecting it online there's a fair number of downloadable games that are great too. One cool one I'd recommend, if you're in the U.S. and never got to play Sin and Punishment on the N64 (as it never came out over here), it's on the Virtual Console and is a lot of fun if you like that kinda shooter. Very challenging though.

Curious as to why the no other Mario's otherwise I'd recommend Super Paper Mario, Mario Kart and Mario Galaxy, but alas.

@fearing: Non-2D Mario games infuriate me. I'll keep my eye on that new RE rails-shooter i've been hearing about, strangely like those.

I'm weird like that, i despise shooters, yet i love them if they offer split-screen co-op campaign. On rails shooters, (especially co-op) just makes it feel all arcady again.. which i love. So no on the Metroid, probably yes on the RE

@D-K: Ah, well, there's the new RE on rails shooter, and there's an older one as well, so there's a couple options there. Also if you like the 2D Mario, Super Paper Mario is basically 2D to 2.5D. You mostly play in 2D and every so often you can rotate the screen to be behind you to move around something that might otherwise seem like it's blocking you and do clever puzzles along those lines.

Another in the 2D realm is, Wario Land Shake It. It has a nice hand drawn cartoon kinda look to it.

Why the Mario hate? Galaxy is definitely one of the best games of this generation and Mariokart is great fun with company. It would seem a shame to miss out just because you don't like one character.
Oh and make sure to get some points the Wii shop has some great games both new and old, I would definitely put in my vote for Sin and Punishment it's a wonderful game and well worth it.

@Weirdwolf Hates Hospitals!: Here's what happened: I lent my brother's Wii for 3 weeks about a year ago, he had wii-fit and wii-somethingorother.. after clobbering a baseball and some punching some playmobil dude in wii-fit for 5 straight ours I decided i to drag myself to the mall..To buy NMH.

    I did.

    I played.

First enemy.. i run up to him and start to go all jedi on his ass.. i'm swinging the mote left and right, up and down... nothing. Boom, pops up a textbox.

    "Press A button to strike"

    O_o

I did.. repeatedly then it prompts me (very unclearly so) to finally make a swing. I do just that, not registered. Again! Have at you! RAAAHH... nothing. I flick the mote slightly and it registers.

So my ultimate japanese anime-styled lightsabre swinging game boiled down to: press A x 100 and flick.

Fuck that! Unplugged the Wii and pushed it into my brother's reluctant hands.

Oh and the Mario thing... Mario symbolizes the transition to 3D.. I freakin' HATE 3D.. Mario on snes was great, clean, smooth sprites and fun level design. Mario64 took a jaggy sledgehammer to it all, and even uglified it all. It controlled and looked like a mess. Mario died for me that day.

@D-K: You really should give the metroid series a try. Especially the trilogy with the motion controls.

Usually i hate FPS games on consoles, but metroid is so well done. And it's really great when you play them in the right order and think "i wish the game would have XY", than you finish and play the next one and realize "man this has XY! now i really would like to have some XYZ!". You finish it, start the next one and realize "Woah it has XYZ!".

The metroid games and Resident Evil4 are probably the only reasons i haven't thrown my wii out of the window yet. And if you want a onrails you should really take a look at dead space extraction, re chronicles isn't as arcarde like overkill but offers more content.

Just wish the wii would have a real light gun... this plastic strapon stuff doesn't work really well and the sights are often off. Oh how i miss time crisis on the PS1 :D

@D-K: So you hate all 3D games? I agree that Super Mario 64 was an extremely jarring transition for the series and didnt feel like a Mario game in the slightest when it was released, but it's one of the best games ever regardless. Compared to Ocarina of Time with Zelda going into 3D, the Mario formula didn't translate all that well to 3D, but all the new gameplay elements Nintendo introduced still remain the most endearing of the entire series.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was, Galaxy is the first of the 3D Mario games to actually do what SM64 couldn't and what Sunshine bizarrely barely even tried to do. Galaxy feels like a Mario game, trust me.

My partner got me a pair of the HOTD overkill pistols, they have a nice feel and a bit of heft to them. I find that spending 5 minutes fiddling with the controls really pays off when you manage to hit that sweet spot in Wii games that use the IR sensor for targeting.

    @D-K: On a note with NMH --

Yeah, it starts with button mashing, but as you get into the game, you realize that there's a lot of hidden moves. I can't figure out one of the moves, but a certain motion plus the A button caused Travis to spin his katana around, and take everyone out with a jumping move. Shaking the nunchuck is also a good chase/armor piercing move.

Once you start playing enough, you get a feel for the flick, and can usually make the motion before it prompts you, making it more seamless... except the occasional time when it doesn't register.

Also, fighting the common enemies isn't the main appeal of the game. It's them damn boss fights.

I was totally excited of doing full motion fighting... buttons and flicking don't come close.

It's like you're promised chocolate cream cake and you can't wait. Then the moment comes and it's a fruitcake.. a stale, mundane fruit cake... Sure, it's cake but it's kinda ruined now..

@D-K: Super Mario Galaxy - for the love of God Super Mario Galaxy!.

Easily my game of the generation so far. That's including every console, too. I would drop NSMBW and get SMG instead, if you're looking to limit your Mario intake (although I don't know why you would...)

@D-K: Little's King Story has a very easy strategy curve, however it's actually a pretty deep game overall.

But basically you start managing only four people and only one class. And a day/night thingy going on. Eventually it starts to get really deep, but nothing too crazy.

I also don't like strategy games very much, but LkS is pretty good... kinda like pikmin (minions that you launch to fight) and harvest moon (upgrading your kingdom, managing some resourses, having to keep happy multiple wives) combined together in a T game with a pretty girl, a naked musitian and Don Quijote helping you manage your kingdom and taking over the world.

By the by... if you haven't play pikmin or any other cube game please pick up the remakes of Pikmin 2 and Donkey Kong.

Also Wario Land Shake It! - Another 2d platformer, and give ExciteBots a rent and play it with an open mind :P It's pretty fun, has a lot of content and a good, if not very simple, online system going on, but it might just be the most sureal racer.

And Super Paper Mario, wich is a light action RPG and a 2d platformer mash up.

@D-K: I would definitely second the motion to get either entry into the Excite series. It's really arcadey, if you're into that, but lots of fun. And almost every aspect of the motion controls sold me, except for doing 360s in the air, that was awkward and hard to pull off. Give it a go, especially if you want something multiplayer that people who don't normally play games might want to try.

LKS is very whimsical and a lot of fun.

Oh, also if you're into 2D platforming, definitely pick up Warioland. The animation will blow you away.

Finally, just reading all the comments, as someone who has played the first and third of the Prime series, definitely pick up the trilogy. Coming from a person who gets motion sickness playing most FPSs, I remember playing the first game on the cube back in the day and being amazed. The graphical fidelity won't have the same effect today (the art direction's still awesome), but the emphasis on exploration and that feeling you get when you upgrade your suit after you take a huge-ass boss down make this a must have.

    Just my two cents...

Fueled by the low Japanese numbers the "Wii crisis" was something some hardcore game journalists might have wanted to see. But to think it would actually happen in the US, in the time leading up to Christmas no less, was absurd.

That's not how it's been looking in Japan for the past few weeks. Maybe Cammie has the graph upside down?

The implication being that if the Wii is suffering on home turf I find it surprising that is doing better in the US.

@ThursdayNext: If you're looking at it that way, then all Japanese consoles would be dying over here compared to the 360... plus we have a more casual gaming crowd here than Japan does and Wii fits real nicely in that category.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with this. SMG is fun, and that looks fun. It can't possibly have a Nintendo-level amount of polish, but so long as it has USB controller support it should be enjoyable. It's not like we're going to get international copyright and patents to hold up in China any time soon, so for now let's just be glad that we're getting something interesting like this instead of Vii Motion Plux.

@Chesu: The game worlds and enemy designs are copied almost directly from Nintendo's game, with only minor changes. You don't see a problem with that? Really?

@searanox: Well, yeah. SMG is a fun, all gamers should have the opportunity to play it. iQue were going to release the Wii in China in 2008, but there hasn't been any new information on that since 2007, and iQue's only ever released handhelds, so the Wii may never get an official release in China.

I wouldn't be very happy if someone ripped off my product and it cut into my profits, but Nintendo's not making any Wii money in China at the moment, so...

@Chesu: This isn't a mere imitation. This is stealing entire levels and game mechanics, which Nintendo's own designers, programmers and artists poured thousands of hours into, then making a few minor changes and passing it off as your own. Imagine if you wrote a novel then I got a copy, changed the names of the characters around, and released it almost word-for-word as my own. I don't think it's justifiable under any moral code, and if it is under yours then I suggest you seriously reconsider your values.

@Chesu: Is Nintendo not making ANY money in China? Isn't Play-Asia based out of China or Hong Kong or Taiwan (Taiwan would null my question).

@ryanmurakami: I'm pretty sure that Play-Asia IS based in Hong Kong, but they're a third-party importer; any Wii systems or software they sell are imported from the US or Japan, so are counted as US or Japanese sales. While Nintendo can technically make money from console sales this way, they're not directly involved in the Chinese console market. They're not actively selling there, so this computer game can't cut into their sales.
