I thought Nintendo always focused on software. I mean, it's not like they keep on releasing new versions of the DS or make peripherals that are (basically) only used in Nintendo games (that are packaged with the peripheral).
But all incredibly obvious jibes aside, this is excellent. Nintendo is the only company that bothers to make high quality games for the Wii, and if they start crankin' them out...no other company will make a profit from their crap Wii games and they'll stop development. Oh, good.
Much as I love Nintendo, and leap to their defence at every available opportunity (probably irritating a bunch of other Kotakuites at the same time), this seems a pretty poor explanation by Reggie.
The Wii was meant to be, and has proved to be, the console that broke every rule in the book and made good by doing so. Falling back now on the rulebook of 'industry-type' excuses such as the fabled console cycle just doesn't seem a Nintendo-ish thing to do - even if it were true (and I'm not sure it is).
It certainly doesn't help any in understanding why things are the way they are.
I have to admit that the PS3 exclusives this year have been more enjoyable for me than those on 360. Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, and Demon's Souls are freaking awesome.
Demon's Souls may very well be my favorite game of this entire generation. It's almost like a 3D, super hard Symphony of the Night.
It's quite obvious that the PS3 had the better line-up this year. But, I would remind everyone that this is Metacritic we're talking about. The site that arbitrarily assigns its own scores, and translates all scores and letter grades, without regard to their "curve".
1) The PC/360 scores for Good/Mixed/Bad all equal up to 101% The DS scores equal 99%.
2) PC was a viable contender. (Yes, yes... not a console...) Only the lack of 3 extra "great" titles and 1-2% less bad games made the difference. Though, this is metacritic. Shouldn't the metacritic score be what determines rank?
2) The #2-4 spots are ordered odd. All received a metascore of 94, but the user scores put the order in SF4, MW2 (360), MW2 (PS3). Is this based on unlisted decimals?
3) Braid? Really? I mean, I guess it counts, but that'd be like counting a Chrono Trigger rerelease for the DS or something.
All nitpicks, though. The PS3 had a great year, and it deserves #1. I'd switch the PS3 & PC rankings, but congrats to the PS3 at any rate. 'Bout time.
This is kind of silly ... Braid counting towards this years PS3 rating even though it came out last year ... God of War Collection? Come on, it must be a joke.
@jayntampa: If remakes aren't counted then we would have had to drop Okami and Metroid Prime Trilogy off Wii's list, and those are two of the few actually good titles.
@CHunterX: I do think they shouldn't count previously released games -- it kind of skews the results a bit. I mean, do you really have the best scores on games when the games really came out a year or more in the past? It's almost like punishing systems for getting the games early lol
Not a huge deal, it's just that the statistic doesn't really say anything.
@GohanGVO: I think the real reason for the better performance the 2D Mario shows is the huge amount of players who associated it with NSMB for the DS (or some great childhood memories of course)
@GohanGVO: If you look at the initial numbers, Darkside Chronicles is selling faster than Umbrella Chronicles, but I think you're right; DS Chronicles will sell steadily, and if it doesn't best Umbrella Chronicle's numbers, it will at least break 1 million.
@GohanGVO: Yup, and with the Super Guide 'everyone' can even beat the game. :P
I played the first SMB some days ago again by chance and man, was the game all the time this hard? oO
@Wahrheit: I assume you are referring to the Assassin's Creed 2 fact when you say this, considering the other 3 facts refer to games selling MORE in 2009 than they did in 2007 - which wouldn't make sense if you were blaming the recession on that.
Also funny that an apparently 'dying platform' is 2nd, and with one of the highest amount of games, the highest median, and an overall good quality of games.
I guess if you act entitled enough the developers pick up on it and make you more games to fill your entitlement quota.

@Mike Newlad: Mod Nations racers..wtf is that? and FF13 is cross platform, Mag looks ok, Bioshock 2 cross as well, Gem and agent please not worth mentioning. GoW3 is the only thing there that is going to be a good exclusive like Uncharted 2. GT5 is good but xbox has forza 3 which equals each other out.
@infinitezero: Mod Nation Racers, is hopefully Sony's answer to Mario Kart. If they had called it Little Big Racers maybe you would have appreciated it more. It's the PS3 game I am most looking forward to next year.
Just because Bioshock and Final Fantasy are on the 360 doesn't mean they aren't on the PS3.
Your opinion on the worth of GT5 is just that - your opinion. In reality it will sell rather well because a lot of people want it. Is Forza 4 coming out next year with 1000 cars? If not then Microsoft don't have the killer exclusive for racing gamers where as Sony has one for the serious driving game fans and one for the gamers like me who love Mario Kart.
LOL! Agreed, still it's not that big of a deal...I have a PS3 and I'm not gloating with joy...hell, it's more of 'Well shit.'
The only way I'll start crowing is that if PS3 can keep up the awesome momentum. There's still plenty of years left in the gen so really, it's anybody's game to 'win'....
I stand by this being a fantastic year for gaming.
@Rachel Fogg: Plenty of PS3 games coming out next year that my wallet's already crying as it is. I'm not even done purchasing the games I want from THIS year. T_T
White Knight Chronicles, Yakuza 3, Star Ocean 4 International, Final Fantasy 13 (and 14 and Versus 13), Agarest Wars (hoping for collector's edition) and God of War 3 are all coming out at the same friggin' time. Yes, a couple of the titles I mentioned are multi-platform games but it's still a ridiculously huge barrage of games that's coming to the PS3 platform.
@Rachel Fogg: I don't know... I've already picked up my copy of Tales of Vesperia for the PS3 so I'm pretty much set in that regard. If it comes stateside though, wow... that's definitely going to put my wallet through the wringer.
EDIT:
Oh crap, forgot about Gran Turismo 5. Damn it.
Heavy Rain looks and sounds interesting so there's always that if you're interested in something more akin to movie-watching/storytelling.
@Rachel Fogg: My wallet isnt pleased with this year but i am, the game selection this year was phenomenal, for both Xbox and ps3. And who here even looks at metacritic, i dont know bout you but they are biased on just about everything.
@Rachel Fogg: Heh, either way, I can't wait for Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Ar Tonelico 3 to come out, especially AT3 because the soundtrack is absolutely divine.
"Nintendo's two platforms take up the rear, perhaps as result of having more games released than any other console platform."
Okay, but how does that explain that the Wii only had one game averaging over a "90" this year?
Or the fact that Nintendo didn't get a single game in the top ten?
@Ad-hominem: Eh it's just like the PS2. Sure it won the generation with most sales and lots of good games. But with so many releases there were tons of crap games.
DS is very similar, with huge user base, tons of titles... and there's crap along with the good.
Wii seems to be more a problem of developers/publishers tossing out shovelware and hardly even trying. Throw enough darts and one might hit the board.

Four months after the release of Umbrella Chronicles, Capcom released a statement stating that the company had shipped 1 million units to retailers.

Therefore, do not mistake its absence for failure.
(I, personally, think it will do worse than UC even with the larger install base of the console.)

As for Mario, allow me to throw another possibility into the ring:
In 2007, enthusiasts were thrilled to receive a new 3D Mario title while the broader audience was split.
In 2009, enthusiasts were relatively split on a 2D Mario while the broader audience was captivated (but still cautious with their dollars).

Nostalgia for and the accessibility of a 2D Mario are some of the most prominent reasons as to why 'everyone' can appreciate the game.
* (As an aside, I wonder if it was a lost opportunity on Nintendo's part to not connect NSMB to NSMB Wii in some way.)

My first reply was a bit more elaborate, but my laptop's battery ran out. :S

That's because so many Wii game players are casual game players.
Yes, "game players," not gamers.

Nah, that's next year with GoW3, GT5, Mod Nation Racers, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII, MAG, Bioshock 2, Gem and Agent.
Anyone see a problem with so many quality games coming to a fantastic system?

360 has ME2, Splinter Cell, Alan Wake.
PC has Sins of a Solar Empire xpac, Supreme Commander, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, WoW:Cataclysm, SWTOR, Jumpgate Evolution, STO.
Wii has Zelda maybe, Megaman 10, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.
Screw year of specific console, next year is the year of potentially great games.
