Lighter weight means less materials used, making them less expensive.

So I guess we can expect these savings to be passed onto the consumer?

I had my Assassin's Creed 2 new in the box sitting in my coat pocket, and I sat down wrong and almost broke the thing in half! I thought maybe I was just beefier today, but looking inside, the case seems to be missing some pieces... I immediately had visions of terrible things happening to either my game disc or the paper cover insert. I don't like change!

Why not just use Nintendo DS style cases sized to accomodate discs?

Even less plastic and provide the same protection as DVD cases.

@Shaban12si: Some DS games come with thick booklets, so it isn't like they don't have that option with this sort of case anyway. It wouldn't crack and splinter like a regular CD jewel case, it's sturdy and protects the disc, holds almost any thickness of manual and saves plastic and space.

I HATE those damn "clamshell" packages. Way to stick it to the man, Nintendo. By the way, which peripherals are they talking about? All Nintendo peripherals period, or just the official ones? Because now that I think about it, I've seen official Nintendo products (Wii Remotes, Nunchuks, Point Cards) in shiny plastic. The Zapper, though, is in a cardboard box.

@andrewwyatt: Here in Europe (or at least, back in Holland), all Wii and DS peripherals were packaged in cardboard.

They are pack so tight though, I cut my fingers multiple times when taking out a Wiimote or any other.

So, environmentally it's way better, but it still cuts me at least as much as those "melted-together" packages. (maybe this has to do with the fact that Nintendo is packaging it in zig-zag edged cardboard)

I know the zig-zaggy cardboard of which you speak, however. Yeah, that's stuff's a pain. I recommend a good pair of scissors, or perhaps a katana, if you have one lying around.

Let's not glorify what this is. It's nothing more than a way for companies to cut the production cost on games. In today's economy it's a smart move, but it comes at the cost of the consumer being able to adequately protect a product they've purchased. The first game I purchased that had this style of case was Brutal Legend. I immediately noticed how flimsy and downright garbage this style of case was. Don't believe it? Grab a new style of case, remove the game and give the case a little twist. It moves, but it's not so bad right? Now try the same thing with these new "Eco" cases. Doesn't feel so safe does it? Furthermore this no longer offers any protection to the game itself from any sort of possible sharp object. (Not that I recommend carrying your games with a bag full of knives to begin with)

It's time to face the facts. Microsoft, Nintendo, even Sony could honestly give two shits about the environment. This isn't exclusive to them, it goes without saying for most major corporate business's. What they are concerned about is money and ways to get it. It's their job. They'll throw out terms and words like "Recyclable" and "Reduced Carbon emission" but those are just to make the consumer feel like they are doing something to help the environment. When in reality if they were legitimately concerned about things like the environment they would be pushing for factories with absolute state of the art technology for cleaner burning machinery, they would reduce the amount of hazardous materials found in every one of their consoles and give full disclosure of them, full global console recycling programs, the list can go on and on. So why don't they do it? Simple answer is because it costs them money. Not us.

These cases will save them a large sum of money. Even if the production cost is cut "marginally" it doesn't change the fact that it will also reduce all sorts of shipping costs.

So forgive me if I don't buy the whole "We're pushing for a greener product" line. One quick glance at an old Kotaku Greenpeace article will prove otherwise. Although I honestly feel Nintendo may be making honest attempts at recycling and reusing... I mean hell, they've been making the same console for over 10-years now. Baziiiinnng!

The thing I don't get is why does the hole have to exist where the most vital and fragile part of the entire package sits? I'm not an engineer but couldn't they have put the holes around the corners or something?

    04:20 PM

    @NeVeRMoRe666: Actually, it's not the bottom that's most vital for a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray.
Because you can polish the bottom off, to get most of the scratches off. (ofcourse there's a limit to this, because of the plastic protecting the data will eventually run out).

Though, if you get a scratch on top (as in, in the non-shiney part of the disc where mostly the image is placed), you are f*cked. Because the image has a reflecting layer on the other side to reflect the laser from the dvd-player and so send the right signals.

When discs are pressed, they are actually transparent. It's not until after the pressing of the data that the image on top will be printed (including the reflecting part).

    I hope I made sense :P

I don't think Sony would do this anytime soon, considering their smaller cases probably already used less plastic compared to the standard PS2/DVD sized cases.
But what's stopping them from just slimming it down more? Hell, eventually they could make just a cardboard sleeve. Its more recyclable than plastic!

On another note, why do they keep using the same PS2/DVD sized case? The only reason the PS2 game case needed to be that big was for that memory card storage thing. They only need to be about as big as CD cases. Maybe its because of manuals? But who reads the manual now-a-days when most games have a tutorial level?
Nevermind, just found out on Wikipedia that they're about as tall as VHS tapes so they could fit in the same storage spaces originally used for VHS.

I held the 360 version of BruLeg and it didn't really feel so secure....it felt cheap.

Why not make the game cases fit around the disc like PS1 games long ago? But I guess it would too bulky to store or something.

@TheOmnitron: I read that in order to drop the carbon emissions enough to drop the average temperature down by a single degree celcius over 150 years, then we'd need to shut down every carbon dioxyde producing machine/person earth for 20 years.

So not only would you have to kill everybody, you'd also have to turn off every car, stop making plastic, stop every factory etc.

I don't doubt that we're killing the environment, I'm all for Green.

The problem is if they want to get more people behind the Green movement, they're going to have to instill some faith in people that they won't be buying shitty products. And work through the companies pasting 'Green' on them to sell to unsuspecting people.

If the Green movement spent less time making fancy marketing ads/websites or whatever with cute little green leaves and stuff and start cycling that money into better research in sturdier/affordable/longer lasting products...then everything would be cool.

It's happening, but slowly...they have to erase the stigma of Green=Shoddy Overpriced Products...

That's just my thoughts on the matter.

@Rachel Fogg: There could be an even simpler solution. There really is no such thing as "global warming"

Apparently earth is in a constant temperature flux. As is Mars and all other planets.

Plus the Taiga forest has enough spruce tree's to filter the CO2 levels of the entire planet.

    And that's just one forest.

I agree on both sides, they're both reasonable to a fault but I generally try to do my own research.

But I heard about the Taiga forest, I suppose we should start planting a some more of those Spruces eh?

Still, I don't want my 'Green' packaging to suck anymore...and these packages are rather horrible. I think MS just pulled a cheapy instead.
