With the Nintendo DSi releasing this coming Sunday, Nintendo's weekly list of Wii downloadables will be expanding, as weekly DSi downloads join the mix, so this isn't only about the Wii any longer. It's a new age, where the shovelware is smaller and more portable. I kid, of course. I'm sure that shovelware on the DSi will be as rare as shovelware on the Wii.

Bonsai Barber (1,000 Wii points) is your WiiWare selection this week. It's a first-person plant grooming game, with demanding customers who send you Wii mail if you miss an appointment. See? This isn't shovelware...it's hedge clipperware, which is totally different.

And what better way to get people excited about an upcoming sequel than to release the original on the virtual console? Super Punch-Out!! for the Super Nintendo (800 Wii points) isn't just one of the best games in the Punch-Out!! series to date...it's also damn fine marketing.

As always, checking out the official descriptions below for more information, and stayed tuned next week, when everything changes.

WiiWare

Bonsai Barber (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): The village residents are hungry for the latest in foliage fashion, and it's up to you, the new barber, to fix them up. Use the tools of your trade: scissors, clippers, spray can, and more in this humorous, first-of-its-kind "first-person-groomer" game. Bonsai Barber features a colorful cast of 12 intriguing customers, including a temperamental shallot starlet (don't call her an onion), an oddball strawberry boffin, a cactus cowboy, a daredevil carrot, and a suave banana with top-secret clearance. Each day, five customers arrive to test your stylistic skill. If the customer requests a specific style, you'll plow that furrow, or you can rely on your expertise to pick from more than 30 popular fashions. Or, why not turn over a new leaf? Be creative and see how they react. They're a demanding bunch, so if you miss an appointment, you'll hear about it-on your Wii Message Board. If you do a good job, you may receive a gift or even a postcard from an exotic destination as your happy customers travel to distant lands and show off their exquisite coifs.

Virtual Console

Super Punch-Out!! (Super NES™, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Featuring the tight game play and humor the series is known for, this sequel to the NES™ classic sees Little Mac return to the ring with the World Video Boxing Association belt once again at stake. Slug your way through the grueling, sweat-pounding matches of the Minor, Major and World Circuits as you face off against some of Little Mac's greatest rivals, such as Bear Hugger, Bald Bull and Super Macho Man. With a cast of new challengers waiting, do you have what it takes to identify their unique patterns and exploit their weaknesses? Go to your corner and come out fighting, but remember what Doc Louis would say: "It's not about brawling-it's about finesse!"

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Shooting, Bombimg, And Popping]]> Two old favorites from the TurboGrafx16 join a brand new Hudson puzzler in this week's Wii downloadables update, with Bomberman '94, Detana!! TwinBee, and Pop'Em Drop'Em SAMEGAME available now.

Pop'Em Drop'Em SAMEGAME is a WiiWare puzzle game from Hudson (500 points), featuring everyone's favorite color-matching blocks mechanic, with a couple of interesting multiplayer modes included in an attempt to keep things seeming fresh. You've got Fame Game, which is just like the single player game, Shame Game, which challenges players to get low scores, and Blame Game, which is simply a free-for-all blockfest. It's like paying 500 Wii points for rhyming.

The virtual console fares better this week, with two TurboGrafx16 games added to the mix for 700 Wii points a pop. Bomberman '94 was the game that introduced the world to the classic white Bomberman character we know and love, while scrolling shooter Detana!! TwinBee introduced TwinBee and WinBee's pilots, Light and Pastel, to what was at one time Japan's most popular gaming franchise.

As always, check out Nintendo's official descriptions below. Clear victory for the Virtual Console this week. Agreed?

WiiWare

Pop'Em Drop'Em SAMEGAME (Hudson Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): SAMEGAME is a simple yet engrossing puzzle game where you must clear matching blocks in sets of two or more. Score high by clearing out more blocks at once. If you manage to clear the entire grid, you can keep on playing with a whole new layout. Getting rid of all those blocks is the key to racking up points. Adjust the difficulty level in a one-player game by trying different grid sizes and multiple colors. Up to four players can face off in any one of three multiplayer modes. "Fame Game," the most straightforward choice, is similar to the one-player version. "Shame Game" turns the tables by forcing players to go for the lowest score. "Blame Game" is a free-for-all as everyone vies for blocks on one big grid. Choose from different block styles, background graphics and music to customize your playing experience.

Virtual Console

Bomberman®'94 (TurboGrafx16, 1-5 players, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 700 Wii Points): Bomberman has arrived to restore peace on the planet, which has been split into five parts by an evil hand. In addition to the nine members of the Bomber Family, the character Rooi shows up to lend a hand. Jump on the eggs that appear from destroyed soft blocks and you can ride one of five types of Rooi. Each Rooi has different special abilities-use them well and you'll ride to victory.

DETANA TWIN BEE (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 700 Wii Points): It's the popular vertical-scrolling shooter renowned for its cute and comical world. Here come Twinbee and Winbee on a mission to save the planet from evil alien invaders. Standing in their way are six stages full of goofy enemies. Play as Twinbee in single-player mode, or team up with Winbee in two-player cooperative mode. With powerful attacks like Big Shot, or Twin Attack and Burst Attack in two-player mode, there's plenty of sting in their arsenal. Use your Shot to transform Bells into items with various effects. Stock up on these bad boys to expand your attack range and really have a blast.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: The BIT.TRIP Begins]]> A new game made to look old and a newly re-released old game join the Nintendo Wii line up this week, with BIT.TRIP BEAT and Summer Games II available for purchase today.

BIT.TRIP BEAT(WiiWare 600 Wii points) is one part Pong, on part rhythm game, where they player controls a paddle with their Wii remote, bouncing oncoming balls away to the lovely beat of 8-bit music. Changes in the music and scenery let you know how well you're doing, and up to three friends can join you in local multiplayer, because tripping alone is never a good idea. It's basically an Atari 2600 game created with modern development techniques, creating something that could be described as retro-licious, if it weren't for the fact that anyone actually using that term is a complete and utter tool.

Those of you who want retro without the obnoxious licious might get a kick out of Summer Games II for the Commodore 64 (Virtual Console 500 Wii points), though boy those C64 games haven't held up well over the years.

As always, see below for the official Nintendo game descriptions.

BIT.TRIP BEAT (Aksys Games, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): BIT.TRIP BEAT is a rhythm game that brings retro action into the present, letting you use the motion-sensing Wii Remote™ controller to bounce beats. Retro visuals, classic game play, four-player multiplayer and an 8-bit soundtrack will get you in the zone and rock your world. The challenges are mighty, but if you can stay cool as the difficulty increases, you'll discover the beginnings of the BIT.TRIP saga.

Summer Games II™ (Commodore 64, 1-8 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): A thousand athletes. A hundred countries. Billions watching around the world as you enter the stadium, marching confidently among your nation's strongest, fastest and boldest young men and women. Your gaze sweeps the crowd as you realize the scope of your achievement. You are about to compete against the world's best athletes in a 3,000-year-old competition. This is the pinnacle of athletic achievement: the Summer Games. Summer Games II challenges your competitive skills with a series of athletic contests for one to eight players. Experience the excitement and realism of eight different events: cycling, equestrian, fencing, high jump, javelin, kayaking, rowing and triple jump. Practice each event to sharpen your skills, then choose from the 18 countries you can represent in the competition.

<![CDATA[Weeky Wii Update: New Gradius, Old Kidd]]> Two old favorites return in this week's Wii Update, with the rebirth of Konami's classic shooter, Gradius, and the re-release of Sega's Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars.

Gradius ReBirth (1,000 Wii points) is a remix of Konami's classic shoot em up series. Players get five levels worth of frantic shooter action, which can be played in their entirety with unlimited continues in standard mode, or taken on in Score Attack mode, where players have a single credit to beat the game. Score Attack mode also supports online leaderboards, and the kids do love online leaderboards.

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars (500 Wii points) is of course the classic Sega Master System platformer, released on the Virtual Console in its original glory.

Check out the official Nintendo descriptions below for more info, while I try to figure out whether or not I should be excited.

WiiWare

Gradius ReBirth (Konami, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Blast your way through levels filled with alien spaceships and otherworldly creatures in this retro side-scrolling shooter. Pick your weapons carefully and upgrade them to create a devastating arsenal of space-aged weapons that will aid you in your challenging mission. Players can post their high scores to worldwide leader boards via Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection and see where they rank against all the other Gradius ReBirth players. Test your skills with Gradius ReBirth and see if you have what it takes to beat this action-packed arcade shooter.

Virtual Console

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars™ (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, Crude Humor, 500 Wii Points): In this platformer from the 1980s, help Alex Kidd in a race against time to find the 12 missing zodiac signs hidden in six challenging levels-including toyland, the robot factory and an outer-space level-all complete with crazy enemies.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Family Parties And Ogre Battles]]> Two new downloadable games grace the Nintendo Wii this Monday morning, as ogres battle and families party, demonstrating the fundamental differences between the two groups.

Gammick Entertainment's Family & Friends Party is this week's sole WiiWare release, delivering 1,000 Wii points worth of interactive board gaming fun. Teams of families and friends (no strangers allowed I suppose) compete in a series of challenges that ultimately determine which team is the best at challenges.

Players looking for more of a challenge might be better off with this week's Virtual Console offering, the relatively hard-to-find Super Nintendo strategy role-playing game Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen. The rare original Enix release was followed up by an equally scarce Atlus re-issue on the original PlayStation. Now the strategy game so awesome it is named after two Queen songs is available for the low price of 800 Wii points, which is much better than what you'd find it for on eBay.

Check out the official descriptions below, while I go buy myself 800 Wii points.

WiiWare™

Family & Friends Party (Gammick Entertainment, 1-8 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Have fun with all your friends and family as you take on some very exciting challenges. This is an interactive board game for as many as eight players of all ages. The goal is to be the first to complete a series of challenges. During each turn, a challenge will be played by one or two players per team depending on the type of challenge you've been given. (Other players on your team can still help and support you). There are six different "Single" challenges that must be played cooperatively by members of the same team. Family & Friends Party can also suggest "Versus" challenges, which must be played competitively by all teams at the same time.

Virtual Console™

Ogre Battle™: The March of the Black Queen™ (Super NES™, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): It's up to you to defeat the Empire. It's been nearly a quarter of a century since the Zetegenian Empire first conquered the Kingdoms of Zenobia with a wrath of fear and bloodshed. You are the leader of a band of rebels who've fought to preserve the last shred of honor in this desperate time of treachery. Manage the ranks of a full-blown rebel army, complete with hundreds of characters, magic items, weapons and mystical Tarot cards. You must succeed in ousting the evil usurpers-your fate, and that of the entire population, depends on it.

<![CDATA[The Weekly Wii Update Has a Secret]]> This week's Nintendo Wii update not only includes Evasive Space for WiiWare and NES shooter Life Force on the virtual console, but also a secret surprise clue that we need your help to decipher.

Nintendo's weekly announcement of new content for WiiWare and the Virtual console today came complete with news of a "fun surprise" that they weren't ready to reveal yet. Great! To make matters worse, they then go on to tease us for an entire paragraph.

We can't tell you the secret just yet but maybe we'll offer you some hidden clues. From AZ to NC, if you're a fan, your applause could rattle your walls, windows, door. You might enjoy this news whether you live in a brick house or Vanderbilt dorm. Even people living along Route 286 in rural Pennsylvania ought to be excited. It'll feel like a bunch of birthday greetings and, really, who could ask for more? But that's about all we can say for now, so be sure to check future Wii-kly Updates.

So what the hell does that mean? Could the clue lie in the abbreviations? Something about fans? Why is door a singular while windows and walls aren't? And what's this about Route 286? Looking it up on the internet I discovered that Route 296 encompasses Golden Mile Highway, Saltsburg Road, Washington Street, Salt Street, Main Street, Oakland Avenue, Philadelphia Street, and Franklin Street. Does this mean anything, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

If you find the whole thing too frustrating, at least there's two shooters available this week to help let off some steam. Check out the official descriptions for Life Force and Evasive Space below, while I slowly go insane.

Evasive Space™ (Yukes Company of America, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Launch a one-of-a-kind mission to rescue the stars. The universe is going dark, and it's up to you, Konki the Stellar Guardian, to set things right. Dr. Dark Matter and his roving band of space thieves have stolen many of the Constellation Stones that make up the heavens. It's time to suit up, power up, recover the Stones and once again bring light to the night sky. Using the Wii Remote™ controller's unique pointer capabilities, simply point and thrust Konki through 20 dangerous time- and collection-based missions in the harshest of environments. Navigate through narrow, mazelike astral caves riddled with space worms, steam pipes and mining drills. Explore vast space stations while avoiding turret fire, mines and huge crushing gears. Weave through cluttered asteroid fields and gaseous planetary rings. Evade the hazards, pick up precious items and ship upgrades, and save the Constellation Stones before the night sky is lost forever.

Life Force (NES, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): This classic shooter, originally ported to the NES in August 1988, is a spin-off of the seminal Gradius series. Pilot the Vic Viper through six stages of intense action, alternating between horizontally and vertically scrolling environments, and take on wave after wave of enemies. Destroy particular enemies throughout the game (which takes place within the body of an enormous alien) to release power-up capsules and equip your ship with your choice of more powerful weapons, extra speed and shields. Utilize the power-ups carefully, though, as a fearsome guardian lurks at the end of each stage and won't be easily defeated. You can go it alone or bring along a friend to take on the challenge simultaneously. Do you have what it takes to save your planet?

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update - Snowboards, Sonic, And Space Puzzles]]> It's Monday morning, and the Nintendo Wii downloadables delivery van is making its weekly rounds with a mix of alpine sports adventure, space-filling puzzles, and yet another installment of brazen blue hedgehog.

Mixing things up today, we'll kick things off with the solo Virtual Console title dropping this week, Sonic Chaos for the Sega Master System (500 Wii Points). Dr. Eggman's motivations have never been so clear; he's using a Red Chaos Emerald to make weapons of mass destruction, I assume in order to destroy...masses? Somehow this results in Sonic's home of South Island sinking into the sea with nay a missile fired, and it's up to the titular hedgehog and his mutant fox pal Tails to save the day. We're really scraping the bottom of the Sonic barrel now kids.

As for new titles, this week sees the release of two very different games on Nintendo's WiiWare service. For the more action-oriented, we have Hudson's Snowboard Riot (1,000 Wii Points), a snowboarding title with online play, compatible with the Wii Balance Board accessory. For those of you who'd rather just sit and think for awhile, Nintendo itself delivers LOPNOS (800 Wii Points), a puzzle game that challenges players to fill-in a rectangular playing field using an assortment of shaped pieces, sort of like an angular jigsaw puzzle. Exciting.

So, anything look good to you folks, or is this one of those weeks where you'll just let your Wii Points ride?

<![CDATA[Weekly Nintendo Update: Rock Out With Wonder Boy]]> It's something old and something new this week in Wii downloadables, as Nintendo releases one rockin' classic virtual console title and one rollin' WiiWare game to their line-up.

First up this week, Bplus brings Niki - Rock 'n' Ball to WiiWare for 500 points, a throwback to the arcade games of old in which all you have to do is vanquish your enemies, move on to the next level, and then vanquish more enemies. Niki rolls through magical lands, collecting pearls and taking out baddies in the time-honored tradition of every other arcade character who has done so.

On the the Virtual Console this week we have the Sega Master System classic, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, the sequel to the original Wonder Boy with powers comparable to those of Wonder Boy!

With MIND BULLETS.

Unable to fight, the people now look to Wonder Boy. <![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: MUSHA And Friends]]> This week's Nintendo Wii update brings with it a couple of WiiWare titles from Aksys and High Voltage Software, and MUSHA - one of the most expensive Genesis games you're likely to find.

We'll do the Virtual Console this week first, as I am extremely excited to see MUSHA (800 points) showing up on the service. M.U.S.H.A. is a classic shooter that places you inside the Metallic Uniframe Super Hybrid Armor as a girl named Terri, who must save humanity from the out-of-control supercomputer, Dire 51. The original game is the gem of many a game collection, with eBay prices often set to ridiculously high, as in upwards of $200. Yikes.

On the less expensive side of things we have High Voltage's High Voltage Hot Rod Road Show (1,000 points), an off-road racing game for up to four players, and Family Glide Hockey from Aksys (500 points), which is glide hockey...for the family.

I know what I'm picking up this week. Do you?

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Jungle Cards, Alucards, And Laser Pachinko]]> It's Monday number 2 of 2009, and Nintendo is delivering the second weekly batch of downloadable content to the Wii console, with two new WiiWare titles and one good old-fashioned vampire whip-fest.

Two titles hit Nintendo's WiWare service today, both which take time-tested concepts - card-games and pachinko - and give them a right twisting to make them a bit more interesting. Jungle Speed from Playful Entertainment (1,000 points) combines flipping cards with quick reflexes in a game that's rules could change at any moment. Allied Kingdoms' Planet Pachinko (500 points) takes the classic gameplay of pachinko and adds a futuristic angle, placing you in the metal shoes of a robot family trying to search for a lost puppy in pachinko-themed ancient temples, armed with rocket launchers, lasers, and slime launchers - all standard robot issue.

If those two choices are a bit too weird there's always Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse for the NES (500 points) on the Virtual Console, the game that introduced us to Trevor and his companion spirits Syfa, Grant, and of course, Alucard.

If I had to choose I'd have to go old-school this week, but your mileage may vary.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Jan. 12, 2009

What's your weapon of choice? Is it a laser gun? Or maybe just a simple deck of cards? No matter what type of game gets you fired up, the latest additions to the Wii™ Shop Channel are sure to add something new and exciting to your arsenal. With fast-flying cards, tumbling pachinko balls and sinister vampires in your midst, you'll need every tool at your disposal.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare™

Jungle Speed® (Playful Entertainment Inc., 1-8 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Jungle Speed is a lightning-fast card game for the entire family, where quick reflexes and a keen eye will put you on top. Flip your cards, watch your opponents and grab the totem at the right moment to win the game. Just when you think you've got it down, a new card can temporarily change the rules and keep you on the edge. Play starts when the first person flips a card. Moving around the table, symbols are revealed until two of the exposed cards match. Players with matching cards must then scramble to grasp the totem in the middle of the table; the loser gets the winner's cards and anything in the pot. With paws flying, be the first person to get rid of all your cards and win the game.

Planet Pachinko (Allied Kingdoms Inc., 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone—Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): Can you survive the Pachinkeet Temples of Planet Pachinko? In the future of the future, an ancient civilization has sealed away its riches in elaborate temples dedicated to the game of pachinko. Now the Robot family must fight through these dangerous temples in search of their lost puppy. Using their rockets, lasers, grenades and slime launchers, will they be able to survive the challenges? They aren't the only ones adventuring through the temples. The pirate Vile Vill and his minions are looking to loot the temples and take on the Robot family. Play in single-player mode or with a friend in exciting two-player co-op.

Virtual Console™

Castlevania® III: Dracula's Curse (NES™, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): This is the third game in the popular Castlevania series and the last of the franchise released on the original NES console. Take on the role of Trevor Belmont, forefather of Simon, and battle Dracula in a time long before the events of the first two Castlevania games. In addition to his trusty whip, Trevor has a previously unseen power—the ability to transform into one of three different companion spirits that he meets during his quest: Syfa, a young vampire hunter capable of powerful magic; Grant, a ferocious pirate who can climb on walls; and Alucard, forgotten son of Dracula, able to shoot fireballs and transform into a bat. Use an assortment of weapons (some specific to each character) as you choose which path to follow in your fight against Dracula and his army. Loaded with replay value and featuring some of the best platform action ever, this title is not to be missed.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Kirby And Crab Battles]]> It's a brand new year for Nintendo Wii downloadables, and while this week sees only a game a piece released for the Virtual Console and WiiWare, there's enough Kirby and crab battles for 20 titles.

Yes, I said Crab Battles. Today Konami releases Sandy Beach for WiiWare (500 Wii Points), a title that lets you build sand castles, fortify them with cannons, and defend them against hordes of invading crabs in Crab Battle mode. Crab Battle mode. That is the most beautiful combination of words ever. I just hope we can attack their weak spots for...you know.

The pink puffball makes his triumphant return to the Virtual Console this week with the release of Kirby's Dream Land 3 for the Super Nintendo (800 points), another classic tale of sucking and blowing as only Kirby could do it.

While I might go with Kirby this week, there's just something about a cheap game with a Crab Battle mode...

WII-KLY UPDATE: ONE WIIWARE GAME AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Jan. 5, 2009

A new year means even more new games at the Wii™ Shop Channel, starting with a pair of imaginative titles to kick off 2009 in style. Anyone who loves Kirby™ can keep the confetti flying to celebrate the release of the classic Kirby's Dream Land™ 3 for the Virtual Console™. And if you're already desperate for a warm mid-winter getaway, check out Sandy Beach, a sand castle game on WiiWare™ that's loaded with sunny fun.

WiiWare

Sandy Beach (Konami, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): Enjoy a fun day at Sandy Beach as you build elaborate sand castles. You can work peacefully on your sand castle or enter into a battle with invading crabs in Crab Battle mode. Players will strategically build their sand castle and use cannons to defend it against an army of destructive crabs. After successfully defending your sand castle, discover beach treasures and additional cannons with your metal detector to customize your castle even more.

Virtual Console

Kirby's Dream Land 3 (Super NES™, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Kirby, Dream Land's resident hero (and everyone's favorite puffball), must once again save the day when the mischievous King Dedede starts causing trouble. Kirby must travel through an assortment of levels, battling an exotic array of enemies (both new and familiar) determined to stop him from completing his mission. Always armed with his trusty ability to swallow enemies and gain special attacks, Kirby can also unite with some of his animal friends and make use of their particular talents. Featuring detailed graphics, challenging boss battles and the distinct charm of a Kirby game, it's no wonder this title is considered a classic.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Maboshi, Pool, And More Star Tropics]]> It's the last Wii Update of the year! Will Nintendo make it count, or end the year with a whimper? Let's see what two new WiiWare and one new VC titles have to say.

Representing the final two WiiWare titles of the year we have a Nintendo first-party WiiWare game called Maboshi's Arcade (800 points), featuring three distinct game modes - Circle, Square, and Stick - taking place simultaneously across three windows, tasking 1-3 players to earn a million points. It features Mii characters, shareable replays, and the ability to download a version of the game to your DS. I've no idea what gameplay is like, but it's certainly got features covered.

Also on WiiWare this final week is Cue Sports - Pool Revolution from Hudson (500 points) , a pool game for 1-4 players featuring online multiplayer via the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. While the pool game part is lovely, the online play is sure to grab the attention of virtual stick jockeys everywhere.

Last but not least we have this week's solo Virtual Console title, Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II for the NES (500 points). The sequel to the original Star Tropics has Mike Jones again facing off against Zoda, with new weapons aiding him during his travels, which now encompass time and space. This was the next to last licensed game released for the NES, with only Wario's Woods coming after. Now you know!

It really isn't a bad lineup this week, with two WiiWare games that offer something more than just shovelware, and a truly classic NES title that you generally won't find on a compilation anyware. A lovely ending to a lovely year.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Dec. 29, 2008 - Champagne? Check. Confetti? Got it. But you're not fully prepared for New Year's revelry unless your Nintendo game library is stocked with games to please everyone under the sun. As always, the Wii™ Shop Channel is open 24 hours a day for your downloading pleasure. The final slate of new game offerings for 2008 includes a couple of wild multiplayer titles on WiiWare™, plus an enthralling sci-fi title for the Virtual Console™. Load up and enjoy!

WiiWare

Maboshi's Arcade™ (Nintendo, 1-3 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Featuring three distinct modes and simultaneous play across three game windows, the constantly changing environment of Maboshi's Arcade creates an atmosphere unlike any other. Each of the modes is based on one of three familiar shapes (circle, stick and square) and offers the same goal: score a million points. Use the intuitive controls to bash enemies in Circle mode, weave your way through Stick mode or burn a path around obstacles in Square mode-all while dealing with power-up items and keeping watch on which effects the other game windows may have on your own. Also featuring Mii™ characters, action replays that you can send to your Wii™ Friends via WiiConnect24™, and the ability to download a version to a Nintendo DS™, you may never want to leave this arcade.

Cue Sports – Pool Revolution (Hudson Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Grab your Wii Remote™ controller and take a shot at this virtual billiard game. Enjoy match-ups, playing classic favorites such as 9 Ball, 8 Ball, Rotation and Snooker, as well as walk-through trick shots in Puzzle mode. Connect to Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection (Nintendo WFC) to go head-to-head with your friends, or even hustle opponents across the world in Nintendo WFC match-ups. This game offers two types of controls, allowing you to virtually strike the cue ball with your Wii Remote controller or use the buttons to adjust the strength of your shot and then strike. Hone your skills in Practice mode, learning all the cool techniques you need to be a true hustler. Use the edit feature to create your own challenge and nail the trick shot you've always dreamed of sinking. Pull off an amazing shot and show everyone who's the biggest shark in the pool.

Virtual Console

Zoda's Revenge™: StarTropics II™ (NES™, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): Take on the role of Mike Jones, intrepid hero of the StarTropics universe, and once again battle the evil alien Zoda to control the fate of the Argonian people. In this journey, the island hopping of Mike's original adventure gives way to traveling through time and visiting locations around the world. And you never know what famous historical figures may appear along the way, giving Mike helpful advice or useful items. Luckily, Mike also has a wider range of weapons and improved play control on his side, so he may yet stand a chance against Zoda. Can you help Mike stand the test of time and save the world again?

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Phantasy Star IV and Tower Monkeys]]> It's the Virtual Console for the win this week in Wii downloadables, as Sega's classic RPG Phantasy Star IV easily tops anything WiiWare can dish out, even if one of them does contain tower monkeys.

The Tower Monkeys arrive courtesy of Tiki Towers from RealArcade (500 points), which involves building perfectly good towers and then letting monkeys loose on them, hoping use them to achieve level goals rather than just knock the damn things over. If you're curious, but not $5 curious, the game is available on the iPhone for $.99. Also on WiiWare this week is Fun! Fun! Minigolf from Shin'en Multimedia (900 points). It's 27 holes of minigolf spread across three continents, which is nice, but it feels the need to say fun twice in the title, which worries me.

This week's no-brainer is Phantasy Star IV for the Genesis (800 points) on the virtual console. The fourth game in Sega's classic RPG series introduced combat macros, combo attacks, and was really the first Phantasy Star to offer in-depth character development, making it the Final Fantasy IV of Phantasy Star.

As lovely as Tiki Towers seems, this week definitely goes to the Virtual Console.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

WiiWare™

Tiki Towers™ (RealArcade, 1 -2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): Tiki Towers is a game of construction, destruction, problem-solving and monkeys. Reclaim the islands of your tribe by defeating a series of evil enemy chiefs. Work with your monkey friends to build towers out of bamboo poles, coconuts and vines. Match wits against the enemy chiefs bent on destroying your towers and driving you from the islands. Navigate levels filled with crazy building challenges, and deal with unfriendly wildlife and other environmental obstacles. Get your monkeys to chant for the BananaMana necessary to counter enemy attacks. Play in either single-player or two-player cooperative mode in this game where monkeys rule.

Fun! Fun! Minigolf (Shin'en Multimedia, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 900 Wii Points): Play minigolf with your friends in beautiful environments. Choose a character and turn your Wii Remote™ controller into a golf club. With its easy-to-use controls, all you need to do is aim, swing and see who's the best putter. Play 27 holes spread across America, Asia and Europe. Enjoy exotic locations all over the world. Go for gold in single-player mode, or invite your friends. Fun! Fun! Minigolf supports up to four players. You can use one to four Wii Remote controllers. Fun! Fun! Minigolf is the ultimate party game for everyone.

Virtual Console™

Phantasy Star™ IV (SEGA GENESIS, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Fantasy Violence, Mild Sexual Themes, 800 Wii Points): Phantasy Star IV is the fourth released game from SEGA's epic Phantasy Star series, one of SEGA's biggest RPGs on the SEGA GENESIS. In the year AW 2284, planet Motavia is once again plagued by strange biocreatures, and it's up to the brave men and women of the Hunters Guild to exterminate them. You are Chaz Ashley, a rookie Hunter straight out of training who is supported by Alys Brangwin-a crafty veteran whose good looks and prowess with the blade have earned her an awesome reputation. These two Hunters, along with a cast of supporting characters, will go beyond Motavia to unwittingly save their entire solar system.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: And Then Trogdor Came In The Night]]> Everything comes to a head in this week's Wii downloadables update, with the final episode of this season of Strong Bad serving up a heaping helping of burnination, unleashing the glory of Trogdor upon us.

Strong Bad Episode 5: 8-bit Is Enough for (1,000 points) has the draconic menace breaking free of his original game, causing other 8-bit classics to leak into the real world as the giant, one-armed beast sets fire to anything even remotely resembling a peasant. A bad WiiWare week for peasants, but possibly a good week for bored families with the release of Reflexive's Big Kahuna Party (700 points), which promises addictive family fun, 99 levels of some sort of gameplay, and 20 hidden tropical sea creatures. Other companies would have been satisfied with 18 or 19, but not Reflexive.

On the Virtual Console we have the Sega Master System classic Enduro Racer (500 points), the best motorcycle racer ever released for the console, featuring all of the fun of the arcade version without the giant plastic motorcycle.

I'd say Trogdor wins this week one giant hand down, but it pretty much goes without saying.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Dogs And Cats, Hockey, and Sonic 2]]> This week's Nintendo Wii downloadables update balances two new and untested WiiWare games with the lesser of two Sonic the Hedgehog sequels.

Kicking things off this week is Bruiser and Scratch from Steel Penny Games (1,000 points), a WiiWare puzzler featuring a anthropomorphic dog and cat duo who find themselves teleported to a strange land where they must solve puzzles in order to get back to their forbidden love affair. Also on the WiiWare side of things we have Big Blue Bubble's Hockey Allstar Shootout (500 points), which transforms your Wii remote into a hockey stick for three skill challenges that are sure to put a strain on your remote straps.

For those who prefer more familiar ground, the Virtual Console gets Sonic the Hedgehog 2 today, but not the Genesis version of Sonic 2. No, this is the Sega Master System version of Sonic 2 (500 Wii Points), the cheaper, less pretty version of the game which also appeared on the Game Gear. Not the best week for Wii downloadables, but it beats a kick in the groin.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Dec. 8, 2008

Neither sleet nor snow nor ice-cold winter winds shall keep Wii™ Shop Channel users from enjoying the best new and classic games. In fact, this week's offerings include a hot new strategy-based puzzle game that promises to keep everyone in the household enthused, no matter how frightful the weather outside may be. Harrowing puzzles, hockey pucks and a world-famous hedgehog are all featured in the latest downloadable lineup, providing red-hot gaming thrills to counter the imminent December chills.

WiiWare™

Bruiser and Scratch (Steel Penny Games, Inc., 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Bruiser and Scratch are stranded in a strange world with a dark secret. Their only hope in finding a path home is to unravel the mystery of this place, one oversized puzzle at a time. Along the way, they make new friends and meet up with old adversaries, each of whom plays a role in their journey. Bruiser and Scratch offers a number of tutorial levels to bring the player up to speed gradually. The story unfolds over 48 puzzles and six landscapes. And for players who can't get enough, Challenge mode offers 75 additional puzzles that range from child's play to mind-bogglingly difficult.

Hockey Allstar Shootout (Big Blue Bubble Inc., 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Use the Wii Remote™ controller as a stick and take the shot as you compete in three exciting Hockey Skills Challenges. In Head 2 Head, it's just you versus the best goalies in the world in a five-puck shootout. Race against the clock to post the most goals in the fastest time. The three difficulty levels will place you against three increasingly talented goalies, each donning the jersey of their home country. In two-player mode, each player will take a turn as shooter and as goalie, and the player who scores the most goals in five shots is the winner. In Sharp Shooter, you post a high score in one of three difficulty levels by breaking as many targets as you can. Each time a shot fails to break a target, an X will appear in the upper left corner. Three misses and the game is over. Power Shot has you take your best shot and watch the Shot-Speed Clock light up. You have three attempts to blast the fastest shot you can, and only the best speeds will grace the high score list.

Virtual Console™

Sonic The Hedgehog™ 2 (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Play the popular Sonic The Hedgehog sequel, made specifically for the SEGA MASTER SYSTEM. Sonic returns home to his island just in time to see Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Robotnik) run off with Tails. In fact, Dr. Eggman has kidnapped all of Sonic's animal friends and placed them in robotic mind-controlling suits. He demands the six Chaos Emeralds, hidden on the island, in exchange for their safe return. Explore underground mine shafts, dash through underwater tunnels and hang glide through the clouds in Sonic's search for the Chaos Emeralds. Once Sonic's found them all, he must face off with the evil Dr. Eggman and thwart his plan for global domination.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Revenge Of The Space Invaders]]> Girls repairing strange things in pits, classic side-scrolling combat action, and old foes coming back to kick some serious Earthling ass - all in this week's Weekly Wii update.

The count is two WiiWare to one Virtual Console this week, starting off with the release of the mildly anticipated WiiWare title Pit Crew Panic from Hudson (800 points), which features a group of young women working in a pit crew, tasked with fixing everything they can get their hands on - sometimes even cars. Also hitting WiiWare this morning is Taito's Space Invaders Get Even (500 points), in which the Space Invader fleet return to Earth for revenge, with you in the driver seat of a UFO, deploying units to crush their puny defenses beneath your heel.

If you'd rather stick with the older, more tried and true gaming experience, there's always Metal Slug 2 for the NEOGEO (900 points) on the Virtual Console, this week's oldest and most expensive offering. Not sure about the two new titles, but you can never go wrong with a bit of Metal Slug.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Dec. 1, 2008

After a long, lazy holiday weekend, it's time to shake off your post-Thanksgiving daze. Need some suggestions for boosting your activity level back into the red? Let the latest additions to the Wii™ Shop Channel be your guide: Take command of a UFO in an epic space battle, get your engine revving as the leader of a frenzied pit crew, or storm the battlefield in a high-tech military mêlée. With all this excitement, you may be ready for another vacation day sooner than you think.

WiiWare™

SPACE INVADERS GET EVEN (Taito, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older-Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): The Space Invaders are back, and this time they're out to get even. Take control of a UFO and make those Earthlings pay by unleashing your fleet of heroic invaders against their puny tanks, fighter jets and artillery-but watch out for the massive boss awaiting you at the end of each stage. Use your invaders' five attack types and the might of the mother ship to rack up high scores, then upload them via Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection and see where you stand in the global rankings. (Note: Router and broadband access required for online play. For more info, visit www.nintendo.com.)

Pit Crew Panic! (Hudson Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Pit Crew Panic! is a frantic, action-packed game that unfolds on the racing circuit. During the game, the pit crew is not only faced with repairing vehicles, but also various WHATSITs. Handling the WHATSIT repairs is a pit crew made up of legendary beauties. The controls are simple: Just grab a member of the crew with the Wii Remote™ controller's A Button, then release the button when the Pointer is over the damaged PART, and that crew member will begin repairs. Assign repairs to the members of your team and provide support using the Wii Remote to send a fully repaired WHATSIT out of the pit as quickly as you can. The game features Normal mode, which can be played using one of two rules: Abnormal mode (players split into two teams and compete against each other) and Ranking mode (compete with players around the world for the top record). Each mode can be played with a maximum of four Wii Remote controllers, allowing you to team up with friends and family. Your teamwork could lead to outstanding records.

Virtual Console™

METAL SLUG 2 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen-Blood and Gore, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1998 by SNK, METAL SLUG 2 is a side-scrolling military-action game. Play800 ers choose from Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio, setting their sights on wiping out Morden's newly remobilized Rebellion Army. Just like the original METAL SLUG, players blaze a trail by shooting and jumping, but METAL SLUG 2 adds a new arsenal for you to command, including a heavy machine gun, a shotgun and even a laser gun, providing players with rich variety. Battle effects are packed in, as well-players turn into mummies after getting caught in poison gas coughed up by mummies. After picking up too many food items, characters turn fat, but they get an attack-strength upgrade. Two-player action is supported, too, so players can have a blast with their friends.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Puzzles And Phlegm]]> Puzzles and phlegm, puzzles and phlegm, I'm gonna get me some puzzles and phlegm! That's the theme for this week's Nintendo WiiWare and Virtual Console combo update, with two from menu A and one from menu B showing up on your Wii console for purchase at any moment. Kicking things off on the WiiWare side, Sodoku Challenge (500 points) teams up with RealArcade's Boingz (1,000) points, which features stretchy aliens (or condoms, if you prefer) you can flick through 30 levels of puzzle platforming goodness.

So you have straight up puzzles, a puzzle-platformer starring sacks of goo, and then the original sack of goo platformer, Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure for the Sega Genesis (800 points). Flick boogers, fart toxic clouds, belch fire, and basically act like me while no one is looking in order to somehow save the day. Do not worry, true believers; I only use my powers for good.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Nov. 24, 2008

This week, it's all about you. By adding three new single-player games to the Wii™ Shop Channel, we're helping gamers turn their Wii time into "me time." That said, don't be surprised if you attract a crowd of onlookers with this remarkable lineup. From elastic critters and elaborate puzzles to a hero with highly questionable manners, these solo titles are suitable for sharing, but give your friends and family fair warning: They may have to wait a while for their turn once you've gotten a taste of the single-player fun.

WiiWare™

Boingz (RealArcade, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Stretch, flex and flick your way to freedom. A truly mind-bending experience, Boingz introduces you to cute, colorful, stretchable friends lost in an alien world, searching for the magical gates that will take them home. Boingz springs to life with 30 levels of puzzle-platforming fun. The Boingz are bendy little critters that can be pulled, stretched and flicked from place to place like rubber bands. It's a team effort, as all the Boingz will have to work together to unwind the game's puzzles. What's more, many of the Boingz have fallen into a deep slumber, and you'll have to lead the stronger Boingz to find and wake up their sleepy friends. Explore surreal landscapes, sail through the air like a trapeze artist, walk along the seafloor, and collect the Twinklies to power up your elastic-powered flights.

Sudoku Challenge! (Digital Leisure Inc., 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Now's your chance to play the brain-busting puzzle game taking the world by storm. With over 100 million Sudoku puzzles, you'll never see the same puzzle twice in Sudoku Challenge! You can select the classic nine-by-nine Sudoku game boards as well as Grand Sudoku, which challenges you to complete five intersecting Sudoku boards simultaneously. Just a beginner? Don't worry-with three difficulty options, even a novice player can complete a Sudoku with ease. But if you're a seasoned pro, challenge yourself in Expert mode and test your true skills. It's time to get your thinking cap on and see how many Sudoku puzzles you can conquer.

Virtual Console™

Boogerman™: A Pick and Flick Adventure (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points): In this top pick from the Sega Genesis, play as Boogerman, the heroic alter ego of Snotty Ragsdale. While investigating Professor Stinkbaum's lab, Boogerman stumbles upon a strange machine that opens a portal to another dimension. Boogerman has a nose for adventure, but has he met his match in this sticky situation? Journey through dangerous worlds while battling wicked enemies like Fly Boy and Deodor Ant. Deal them a blow with Boogerman's super abilities: pick and flick with deadly precision, belch, and use his deadly signature stomp.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update: Dangeresque Bean Bag Invaders]]> It's time for your Monday Wii update, and this week we get an excellent example of the range of Nintendo's WiiWare program. On one hand, we have Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3 (1,000 points), the latest in Telltale's excellent series of adventure games based on the characters from Homestarrunner.com, and on the other, bean bag tossing. Target Toss Pro: Bags (700 points) is a game from Incredible Technologies that promises all the fun of tossing bean bags at stuff. Judging by the colon in the title, I am assuming that there will be a wide range of Target Toss Pro games that allow you to throw different things. Think I'll hold off until Target Toss Pro: Kittens comes out.

Meanwhile, through the mists of the ages, the Virtual Console gets two classic titles from the 16-bit era. Space Invaders: The Original Game for the SNES (800 points) is the original Space Invaders, enhanced with arcade cabinet emulation and a VS mode, while Forgotten Worlds for the Sega Genesis (800 points) is a classic Capcom scrolling shooter featuring 360-degree shooting goodness. And that's the week in Wii downloadables! Try not to sprain yourself tossing.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND TWO VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Nov. 17, 2008

The ever-growing library of games on the Wii™ Shop Channel truly offers something for every gaming occasion, as seen in this week's new additions. Want to settle in for a few single-player laughs? Check out the latest hilarious Strong Bad adventure. Socializing with friends? Target Toss Pro: Bags lets you play with as many as 15 of your pals. Gathering with family? Even your grandparents can enjoy the arcade classic SPACE INVADERS®. And the side-scrolling action of FORGOTTEN WORLDS™ provides a wickedly fun diversion for solo gamers and fantasy-loving groups alike.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a broadband Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare™

Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3 (Telltale Games, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older – Alcohol and Tobacco Reference, Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Move over, generically buff action heroes. Strong Bad is here to show you how it's done in his hand-crafted cinematic masterpiece, Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective. You play Dangeresque, a dirty cop in pursuit of a little action and several big sacks of cash. Can our hero stay alive long enough to defeat his arch-nemesis, save the world and get the girl? Looks like he's gonna have to jump.

Target Toss Pro: Bags (Incredible Technologies, 1-16 players, Rated E for Everyone, 700 Wii Points): Target Toss Pro: Bags is a new video game based on beanbag toss, the nation's hottest backyard and tailgate sensation. Bags – or Cornhole, as it's called in some parts of the country – originated in the Midwest in the 1960s and has since become a staple at outdoor social events from coast to coast. Similar to horseshoes, Bags is a deceptively simple yet extremely competitive game where players try to toss beanbags into a hole in a slightly raised platform or "box" for points. Whether at a tailgate party or a summer barbecue, the game has become a social focal point, and the unmistakable thud of bags hitting the box is now a universal party soundtrack.

Virtual Console™

SPACE INVADERS: The Original Game (Super NES™, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Experience one of gaming's iconic franchises in this perfect rendition of the arcade classic. Take aim at the field of invaders relentlessly marching toward you. Move quickly but carefully, using the barriers for protection as you avoid missiles fired by the aliens and try to destroy all of them before they reach the bottom of the screen. Further enhance the nostalgia by choosing from several modes that simulate different versions of the arcade game (such as upright cabinet or black-and-white). Or if you want to prove your superior skills to a friend, try the new VS mode and see who can stop the alien menace the quickest. All in all, it's pure gaming at its best, now with no quarters required.

FORGOTTEN WORLDS (SEGA GENESIS, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone – Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): FORGOTTEN WORLDS is a one- or two-player side-scrolling shooter made by CAPCOM. It was one of the first games to incorporate 360-degree aiming and shooting. This SEGA GENESIS version provides the same impact and intensity of the classic arcade game. In the 29th century, without warning, warships broke through the sky, loaded with fiendish aliens. They rained down fire, bombs, missiles and napalm, leaving the land barren and inhospitable. Humanity was enslaved and Earth became known as the Forgotten World. In a hidden place, a group of brave humans raised two male children in secret. They brought up the young men as warriors, training them for battle. The two warriors emerged as armed machines of might, strength and super power – the Nameless Ones. Fight the hateful invaders as the powerful Nameless Ones. Collect Zenny to upgrade your weapons and satellite, and free the planet.

<![CDATA[Weekly Nintendo Update: Yummy Yummy Mega Man 3]]> It's Monday morning, and we all know what that means! More joy and goodness delivered straight to your Nintendo Wii entertainment system, courtesy of the young sprightly elves who handle WiiWare and their older, more jaded Virtual Console counterparts. Despite the Virtual Console's strong showing this week with Mega Man 3 for the NES (500 points), the game that introduced us to Proto Man, Rush, and the electric slide, WiiWare comes out on top this Monday for the simple fact that it has a game that allows you to serve pizza to ninjas.

Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam from Virtual Toys (1,000 points) is a fast-action cooking game that has you working your way through four different restaurants on your way to becoming the best chef in the city, serving the needs of local ninja, alien, mafia, and vampire population. If you don't find that exciting, you might want to spend some time on this week's other WiiWare title, Gameloft's Brain Challenge (1,000 points), though probably not.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Nov. 10, 2008

Are you hungry? Think of this week's Wii™ Shop Channel lineup as a lively menu that aims to satisfy every appetite. You'll find a food-themed game to tempt your tummy, a challenging brain game to please your noggin and a classic sci-fi action title to fuel your imagination. Whatever the recipe, you're sure to come back for seconds-and thirds, and fourths, and beyond.

WiiWare™

Brain Challenge™ (Gameloft, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Just like your body, your brain needs to be exercised to stay in shape. Boost your brain and relieve stress through various minigames in a personal session to get a detailed evaluation. Challenge your friends' brains in delirious party games to see who is the smartest. Test your brain's abilities in Visual, Memory, Logic, Math and Focus minigames. Compare yourself with friends by challenging their brains in three multiplayer modes. Develop your resistance to stressful situations that could happen in real life. Use a customized Mii™ character to create personal sessions. Choose your favorite personal coach. Track your overall performance with detailed statistics and graphs. The special Kid Test and Senior Test modes will gather everyone around the game.

Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam (Virtual Toys, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam is a frenetically active cooking game in which you must serve food to your customers as quickly as possible. This could be a simple task, but the customers aren't very patient, and you'll find a multitude of annoying insects that make the noble mission of satisfying your small gourmets' stomachs much more difficult. In the game's Career Mode, your goal is to become the best chef in the city. To do so, you have to prove your worth by cooking in four fantastic restaurants: the Hot Dog, Hamburger, Pizza and Mexican Restaurant. Enjoy playing Yummy Yummy with your family, serving delicious food to the most surprising characters: vampires, ninjas, extraterrestrials and mafia thugs. Put on your chef's hat, sharpen your knives and turn up the heat.

Virtual Console™

Mega Man™ 3 (NES™, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): In the year 200X, the notorious Dr. Wily, now reformed and working for the forces of good, works hand-in-hand with Dr. Light to build a new type of peacekeeping robot. When a new set of eight Robot Masters escapes the lab to wreak havoc on the world at large, only Mega Man can save the day. This time, Mega Man must rely on his new slide move and canine companion Rush to conquer the stages and vanquish evil. A new character, Proto Man, adds to the mystery and appeal of this seminal title in the famous action-game series.

<![CDATA[Weekly Wii Update - Space Harrier, Alien Crush, And Interior Design?]]> This week in Nintendo Wii downloadables, two classic franchises make their triumphant return, and if neither tickles your fancy you can always take a crash course in interior design. That's right, in addition to good old Space Harrier for the Sega Master System (500 points) and Hudson's classic pinball title reborn in Alien Crush Returns for WiiWare (800 points), Big Blue Bubble releases Home Sweet Home (1,000 points), a WiiWare title that promises all the fun of designing a home interior that you'd get in The Sims without all those pesky Sims running about. Sure to make an excellent stocking stuffer. The most interesting of the three to me is of course Alien Crush Returns. I am a certified video game pinball junkie, and the option to play online against three completely anonymous players only sweetens the deal.

So, who among us will admit to pondering downloading Home Sweet Home? It's okay, you are among friends...well, I can't guarantee they'll still be friends once you make an admission, but they started out as your friends, and if they don't support you in your interests do you really want them as friends anyway?

The SEGA Master System version is considered a solid port of the arcade game, containing 18 levels of intense fun. As the “Space Harrier,” you must fight your way through “The Land of Dragons” and defeat the bosses at the end of each level to restore peace to the land. Are you prepared? Get ready!
