I suppose Activision is trying to show the range of the Guitar Hero: Van Halen product to those of us who didn't already get it for free via the promotion in Guitar Hero 5. A promotion I completely forgot to redeem, mind you, so now I am getting my first taste via this demo. Van Halen's "Panama" is joined by Weezer's "Dope Nose" and Killswitch Engage's "The End of Heartache," making the Guitar Hero: Van Halen demo a little light on the Van Halen.

Still, it's "Panama," and if Gran Turismo 4 taught me anything, it was that "Panama" never gets old.

Update: Make that four songs. I checked out the demo with the mic only, and instrumental "Eruption" isn't available on that playlist.

Guitar Hero: Van Halen should be out in time for Christmas Eve.

<![CDATA[Chiptune's Finest Celebrate Weezer]]> Online record label Pterodactyl Squad has released a free 8-bit Weezer tribute album, featuring some of the biggest names in chiptune paying homage to the band's greatest works.

I've been listening to this album all day now, and several of the tracks are really digging in, most notably Bit Shifter's "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" and "Holiday," performed by Anamanaguchi, a band Leigh Alexander got familiar with in her May Kotaku feature.

My personal favorite, however, is Unicorn Dream Attack's "Jamie", a song that really didn't grab me in its original state. U.D.A.'s Stefen Keen does simply amazing things with the tools at his disposal. I highly recommend checking out his MySpace page to give "4l0n3" a listen.

There are a few misses in the compilation, but on the whole I find it very worth the free download.

<![CDATA[GT5 Driving Along With Weezer]]> Yesterday we learned that Weezer and The Mars Volta would be among the artist featured in the soundtrack for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and now with have proof in motion. I tend not to get into a Gran Turismo game until the whole music plus driving experience hits me. With Gran Turismo 4 I was completely neutral until the opening movie, when Van Halen's Panama kicked in. This time around it's Weezer's Automatic. I am now officially looking forward to the game. Hit the jump for another clip featuring a remix of The Mars Volta's Goliath. Good stuff.
