<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: You Can Actually Play These ]]> This week won't be just about new games announced for release more than a quarter down the road. We've actually got a pretty sizeable list of drops, highlighted (for me, anyway) by NCAA Football 09, which comes out on Tuesday. This title was the reason I bought my first console since — actually since getting a Colecovision off of usenet in college. I played it on my buddy David's Gamecube in 2003, and I decided right then and there I had to have an Xbox. Oh lawdy, that was bad of me. But seriously. My crazy Vegas lawyer friend Davor had a PS2 and we'd bet on computer-vs-computer simulations, too. With a spread. Good times.

Let us know what you're buying/renting in the comments:

Monday (July 14)
1701 A.D. Gold Edition (PC)
Yamaha Supercross (PC, PS2, Wii, DS)

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: Faster, Higher, Stronger ]]> twig.jpgWonder if Beijing 2008 will feature photorealistic smog effects or incorporate the stupefying algae bloom in the nautical events. Still, pretty ambitious of Sega to put out a sports game featuring events that even sports fans don't follow except for two weeks out of a four year span (and dropping it less than a week before NCAA Football 09). If the spirit of brotherhood and competition isn't your thang, Unreal Tournament 3 comes to 360 this week also. Or maybe you prefer Sports Party on the Wii. Or Purr Pals. Let us know what you're buying/renting in the jump.

Quiet week for consoles, but the DS has seven titles dropping in the coming week, and Secret Agent Clank for the PSP also hits the street. Also, if this Deadliest Catch game doesn't go out this week, I am de-listing it. So, spending your coin on handheld toys this week? Let us know in the jump, or tell us what you're playing instead. NASCAR 09 and Dragon Ball Z pick up the leftovers on Tuesday, plus there's the Don King-branded boxing game which, come on, how can that game not have an ultra-realistic litigation engine built in, if it's Don King. So, if you game on the PS3, this is pretty much your week to shine. Let us know what you're buying, and if you're buying a PS3 just to play MGS4, in the comments.

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: Kung Fu Bug's Life Bee Movie Cars Panda ]]> This week looks like the second wave of big summer-season releases, dropping Ninja Gaiden II, GRID, Lego Indiana Jones, and The Bourne Conspiracy on Tuesday, followed by The Incredible Hulk on Friday. Oh, and let's also not forget Activision payday movie tie-in Kung Fu Panda: Shovelware edition, which accompanies the animated, thinly veiled Nacho Libre redux hitting screens this week. Consistent readers of the site will know I despise two things: Yap dogs, and animated movies with a color-by-numbers stranger-in-a-strange-land narrative. Hate them like Colbert hates bears. And a panda is a bear.

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: Always Seek Balance Board, Daniel-San ]]> Age of Conan goes out this week, thus ending, if not exactly rectifying the early server access fiasco. <![CDATA[ The Week in Games: No Reversals! ]]> Major League Eating comes to DS this week, so you can, I dunno pack your face using the stylus while you chow down at a McDonald's on a lunch break or something. Remind me to tell you all sometime about the abortive fried chicken eating match contest I nearly got into at West Wendover, Nevada back in 2001.

Actually, that's about all there is to the story. A lawyer friend in Las Vegas, unintimidated by my claim to clean drumsticks in two bites, proposed we meet at middle ground (between Vegas and Denver) and settle up. But we couldn't get the International Federation of Competitive Eating to sanction the duel,. And my attempts to get the local chamber of commerce to give us free shit didn't pan out, either. Also, the idea of spending an entire weekend in eastern Nevada eating chicken was not, shall we say, palatable. So we both mutually bowed out. But I'll take any of your asses on, especially if you live near a Bojangles.

Anyone picking up any of these? Let us know in the comments.

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: Mutual of Kotaku's Wild Kingdom ]]> booooooring.jpgAlright, not much to pick on here in TWiG's April 20th installment. But Wild Earth: African Safari, well good thing that's a kid title. Otherwise it looks about as interesting as watching old people fuck. Virtual photography? That's a side mission in about four titles I already own.

I realize everyone here hates teh sports, but if I wasn't moving I'd be at least renting NBA Ballers: Chosen One. I bought the first one during the 2004 playoffs and created my baller, Two-Car Fatal, as an homage to the scut work Crecente and I were doing on the night shift at the time. (I also created Ice Killus as an homage to the Greek playwright.) I'd happily revisit that series again.

Here's what's coming up, let us know if you'll pick or pass. Thanks.

The Red Star (Wii)
Wild Earth: African Safari (Wii)
River King: Mystic Valley (DS)
Chameleon (PSP)
Dream Pinball 3D (Wii, DS)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time (DS)
Persona 3: FES (PS2)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness (DS)

<![CDATA[ The Week in Games: You Are the Music (and DS Game) in Me ]]> twig.jpgYou can expect this out of me if I'm running TWIG from now on — the WTF drop of the week is the lede, and this one is for High School Musical 2 (Two): Work This Out. A Disney press release spends reams of copy talking about the franchise's marketing chops and about a paragraph explaining why the game is worth playing. To wit:

• It's "the only musical adventure game allowing fans to immerse themselves in the world of "High School Musical 2." And thank God for that.

• You can play as one of six characters and "go on various adventures at the resort, compete in time-based challenges and play different rhythm games, all while listening to the hit songs from "High School Musical 2." Something tells me the last part of that is what Disney considers most important.

Here's the rest of your roster of new releases. Tell us in the comments if you're picking any of these up.

Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis (PC)
Major League Baseball 2K8 Fantasy All Stars (DS)
AMF Bowling Pinbusters! (DS)

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: We Had the Time of Our Lives ]]> 939741_95164_front.jpgThere are 18 releases coming up this week, and the largest drop appears to be the PC versions of Assassin's Creed and Portal, plus a Half Life 2 Episode Pack. Those are the biggest names I spot anyway.

The WTF drop of the week, hands down, is "Dirty Dancing." This movie was a favorite of 40-something women strung out on prescription antidepressants and boxed wine in 1987. They're now 60-something. Not exactly the demographic that camps out on Tuesdays for a new release. Or picks up a controller. The parade of new games is after the jump:

Fab 5 Soccer (DS)
Plushees (DS)
Half-Life 2: Episode Pack (PC)
Dirty Dancing (PC)
MiniCopter: Adventure Flight (Wii)
Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 2 (PS2)
Ikaruga (XBLA)
Summer Sports: Paradise Island (Wii)
Overclocked: A History of Violence (PC)
Portal (PC)
Baroque (Wii, PS2)
Arcana Heart (PS2)
Assassin's Creed (PC)

There's also Sam & Max Episode 205: What's New Beelzebub?, Civil War Mysteries, and Team Fortress 2 coming out for the PC.

If you're picking up any of these — especially Dirty Dancing, I want to know about that — let us know in the comments. Thanks.

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Come Back Next Week Edition ]]> MANA KHEMIAMarch was a huge month for game releases. Huge. Crisis Core, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Condemned 2, God of War: Chains of Olympus—it looked more like October than March, as far as game releases go. April? It starts with but a whimper. This week sees practically nothing new in the way of marquee titles. A few Dreamcatcher Interactive numbers, a dusting of super-hardcore RPGs, but not much else.

Perhaps everyone just wants to steer clear, very clear, of Grand Theft Auto IV's April release. Next week? It's not much better.

Call of Duty 4: Game of the Year Edition (Xbox 360)
Not so much a new release, as a re-badging with a downloadable variety map pack.

Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis (PS2)
The Atelier Iris series continues to pump out more alchemy school themed role-playing games. This is one of them.

Toy Shop (DS)
Stylus controlled toy shop management fun. We're sure of everything except the fun part.

Great War Nations: The Spartans (PC)
The PC finally gets a real-time strategy game, said to feature "glorious 3D."

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Shoot The Core ]]> The wait for more Final Fantasy VII is almost over for North American gamers, as this week's biggest drop is arguably Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. It joins a pair of well known ninja in the week's new releases, which is also heavy on action and real-time strategy. A slew of Wii shovelware hits, excluded from our list of new releases, but there's something for everyone!

Let us know what you're picking up this week in the comments.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (PSP)
This fanfic fodder prequel to the PS One classic Final Fantasy VII makes its way stateside.

Dark Sector (PS3, Xbox 360)
Sci-fi. Third-person shooter. Black ops. Krull.

Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword (DS)
Team Ninja brings stylus stabbing action to the DS.

Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath (PC)
C&C 3's first expansion features more units, more wrath.

Viking: Battle for Asgard (PS3, Xbox 360)
Sega's other axe-battler is steeped in Nordic mythology.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 (PS2)
Kid Naruto, radical ninja, in his third fighting adventure.

Universe At War: Earth Assault (Xbox 360)
The RTS harvests a 360 port.

Octomania (Wii)
The waggle puzzler with a Puyo Puyo pedigree.

Harvest Moon DS Cute (DS)
More farming, role-playing fun, with extra cuteness for girls.

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: A Rainbow Of Fruit Flavors ]]> VEGAS!Talk about variety! The Rainbow Six team are back, joining a super budget re-release of the first three Metal Gear Solid games, making tactical action a big factor in this week's releases. On the casual sports side, Sega's mascot-heavy tennis game ships the same day as the newest Hot Shots Golf.

I think I'll have one of more of these bad boys in hand by the end of the week, but if you're picking up anything, let us know in the comments.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (PS3, Xbox 360)
Oh no! Somethin's goin' down in Las Vegas. Rainbow Six assemble!

Sega Superstars Tennis (DS, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii)
Take Virtua Tennis, add Sonic, new mini-games, done.

Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, cheap. Perfect for getting up to speed for 4.

Condemned 2: Bloodshot (PS3)
The PlayStation 3 version of the vagrant bludgeoning adventure ships a bit late. It's fun!

Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds (PS3)
The next-gen of big headed golf finally comes stateside (and online!).

Lost in Blue 3 (DS)
Island survival adventure returns. Curse that sneaky blue!

SingStar '90s (PS2)
Remember Len? Color Me Badd? Technotronic? All the songs you never, ever wanted to hear again are on this very disc.

Samurai Warriors 2: Xtreme Legends (PS3)
Koei keeps on slashin' with this new expansion.

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Suffer Like G Did? ]]> There is no shortage of things to kill this week, as hundreds of zombies, mutant fish and mentally unstable hobos vie for your first person view killing dollars. If House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return and Condemned 2: Bloodshot aren't up your alley, perhaps some of this week's portable role-playing games will be. The full list is after the jump!

Condemned 2: Bloodshot (PS3, Xbox 360)
Crumple the skulls of scores of scary homeless guys as you search for clues.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (DS)
Four-player RPG fun over Wi-fi makes big-head role-playing possible.

House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return (Wii)
Zombies must be destroyed, whether by pistol or shotgun.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (DS, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii)
Formerly known as Winning Eleven, Pro Evo returns.

Wild Arms XF (PSP)
Hex-based RPG action on the go.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PS2)
The former PSP game gets a PlayStation 2 port.

Insecticide (DS)
The film noir bug adventure from Gamecock and Crackpot.

In addition to the above, Seven Kingdoms Conquest (PC), Buzz! Hollywood Quiz (PS2), Buzz Jr. Robo Jam (PS2), Nanostray 2 (DS) and Imperium Romanum (PC) are expected on store shelves. What are you picking up? Me, I'm going for some House of the Dead 2 & 3 action!

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Holiday Black Hole Edition ]]> Fortunately, the last few months have given us a glut of awesome titles to play over the holiday break. I say fortunately because to say that this week's list is anemic would be a huge understatement. A few titles are trickling in, but considering the season and the fact that Christmas Day lands in the middle of the week this is hardly surprising. So to the game industry I say, take a break and get ready to knock our socks off in the new year. We're looking at YOU Super Smash Brothers Brawl!

Jeopardy! Deluxe (Macintosh)
It's like having Alex Tribec in your living room.

Wheel of Fortune Deluxe (Macintosh)
Bring Vanna home for the holidays!

Well, that's it. Sorry to disappoint you... unless of course you are a Mac owner and really into game shows. In which case, I'm still sorry.

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Licensed Schlock Rush Edition ]]> Few Kotaku readers will gripe that this week contains too many must-buys. The only complaints that will come from this pre-holiday release week will come weeks from now, as one is faced with a surprise copy of Alvin & The Chipmunks stashed under the tree. Consider it a good week to catch up on November's releases.

The Golden Compass (DS, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360)
Relive the magic of the computer animated film at home!

Beowulf (PSP)
Relive the magic of the computer animated film at home!

Alvin & The Chipmunks (PC, PS2, Wii)

Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2 (Xbox 360)

Dragon Ball Z Budokan Tenkaichi 3 (Wii)
Big pecs, big hair, big action. Atari needs the money.

Godzilla Unleashed (Wii)
Giant monsters fight each other. Guys? Atari needs money.

Jenga (Wii)
The virtual version of the blocky board game. Seriously, Atari needs money. Bad.

Draglade (DS)
Atlus introduces Nintendo DS owners to "grapping", a hybrid of rhythm and fighting gameplay.

So, uh, who's getting what?

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Heavenly Sword Edition ]]> heavenlyswordbox.jpg

This week has a nice choice of titles spread out over various systems (sans the PSP). I'm trying to get to Heavenly Sword tonight so I can see for myself what it's going to be like and I am anxious to check out Jam Sessions and Drawn to Life for the DS. I've avoided Oblivion for a while just because I'm afraid of getting sucked in, but the inclusion of all the expansions on one disc is intriguing. What to do, what to do?

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Stranglehold Edition ]]> With all the traveling I've been doing lately it's been hard for me to play any new games and probably won't get much of a chance for a few more weeks. Some good titles coming out this week though and I'm sure you'll be able to find something on this list that strikes your fancy. Personally I'm rather intrigued by the Sherlock Holmes title which has been getting decent reviews. Sherlock Holmes and the Cthulu mythos? Sounds like a winner to me.

Stranglehold (X360, PC)
All the fun of a John Woo film on your 360!

Medal of Honor: Airborne (PC, X360)

<![CDATA[ Week In Games: Gundam Corruption 08 ]]> blue_dragon_weekingames.jpgThis week represents a late summer perfect storm of video game release hype. With a series of massive releases hitting store shelves this week, including Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Lair, Blue Dragon and Warhawk, one can hardly believe this is August, not the middle of November.

Personally, the only thing on my "buy or die" list is Metroid Prime 3, but with Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix also hitting digital stores this week, I'm sure I'll be plenty busy.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii)
Samus is back for another first-person adventure. One of Nintendo's big three for 2007. Do want.

Lair (PS3)
Factor 5's dragon riding game may not be getting great reviews, but it sure is pretty.

Blue Dragon (Xbox 360)
Sakaguchi and Microsoft are banking hard on this easy-on-the-eyes RPG.

Warhawk (PS3)

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (PSP)
It's huge in Japan. The game that sells PSPs overseas week after week.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam (PS3, Xbox 360)
The Japanese equivalent of chocolate and peanut butter.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii)
The Tiger is back and ready to tap a little white, dimpled ball around carefully manicured lawns for 2008.

Carnival Games (Wii)
Mini-games! Yay!

What are you picking up this week?

Madden NFL 08 (X360, PSP, PS3, WII, PS2, MAC, GC, PC, XBOX, DS)
Crack open a brewski and invite the boys over for a few rounds.

More Mana, more better.

Operation: Vietnam (DS)
It brings the excitement of war torn Vietnam to you DS!

I am, however, looking forward to playing Boogie as it was one of my favorite games I played at E3. It was fun, simple and made me laugh a lot. Anybody else going to check it out?

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Guitar Hero Rock The Eighties Edition ]]> Looks like some good titles coming out this week, so here's a smattering of the best ones! Guitar Hero 80's is a sure fire sale for me, but unfortunately my game budget is rather small so that's all I'll be able to afford. there's actually several other games I'd like to pick up like Persona 3 and Alien Syndrome. I'm even slightly intrigued by Escape From Bug Island despite my earlier suspicions that it will suck. Anything on here look like it will end up in your console for days on end?

Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s (PS2)
Oh my god, dude! It's like totally tubular! It's Guitar Hero 80's!

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (PC)

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Post E3 Edition ]]> parappacover.jpg
With E3 behind us, we look forward to some really amazing titles coming out in the next few months. Unfortunately, none of them are coming out this week. We have a couple football games, more Tom Clancy, a new RPG on the PSP, a tennis game, and an actual real live MAC game. Two games that have my interest at least a bit this week are PaRappa on the PSP and Bomberman Live on XBLA. But, in my post E3 stupor, I doubt I would even have the brain power to concentrate on a new game.

I can't say there's anything I'm terribly interested in this week, but some of you might find something appealing on the list. Ninja Gaiden certainly looks pretty, but being PS3-less, I'll have to pass on that one. Anything here you're looking forward to?

My game dollars this week will be going to The Darkness and the harry Potter game for the Wii. A lot of handheld titles coming out this week with one of the only real console releases being RE 4 for the Wii. Even though I've already played it through on the other consoles, I'm still looking forward to the point and shoot ease of the Wii remote. It also looks like the Transformers game invasion has begun on the PSP and the DS. Will you be getting any of these handheld versions or just wait until the console versions come out. Or will you just be skipping the whole Transformers mishigos altogether?

<![CDATA[ Week in Games: Mario Party 8 Edition ]]>

As I depart the Big Apple (where I've been reporting from all weekend) I leave you with this list of games coming out this week. Mario Party looks like it might be some fun with the addition of the Wii remote mechanic and I'd like to see how the 2d to 3d Crush is for the PSP. Other than that, I can satisfy myself with finishing up Silent Hill 2 which for some reason I decided to haul out of the mothballs. Anyone going to round out a holiday weekend by picking one or two of these up?

  • Mario Party 8 (WII) It's the video game that's a board game with mini-games.
  • Halo 2 (PC)
    Now with less ass.
  • Forza Motorsport 2 (X360)
The Xbox 360 gets it's dose of Forza racing.
  • Shadowrun (X360, PC)
Magic and guns, 360s and PCs join together for a new multiplayer experience
  • Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (WII)
Nintendo brings Mortal Kombat to their console marking the beginning of the Wii bloodletting game parade.
  • Crush (PSP)
It's like Super Paper Mario on the PSP just without the paper or the Mario. The super remains to be seen.
  • Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm (PS2)
A little 2D old school PRG action. I really, really hope this has that silver ball that puts spikes in your brain.
  • Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia (X360, PC)
Fight for control of the suburbs against monster hordes. No, not soccer moms, actual monsters.

It's a mixed bag of titles this week. We have a movie franchise game, a new RPG, the re-emergence of a classic, a comic card game, mechs, a high school sim and even the simple crossword puzzle. <![CDATA[ Week in Games: Touch the Dead Edition ]]> 41JuGWqSpCL._AA280_.jpg

I've been intrigued with Touch the Dead ever since I heard about it. The concept is bizarre: a zombie killing, jail breaking FPS for the Ds that utilizes the touch screen for it's controls. Sure, the possibility of it sucking is rather high, but I'm holding out hope. Besides, looking at this week's rather anemic list it seems like the best bet for a purchase.
