Is this that samurai game where you had to try to unite all 3 clans and you could change your head/body with unlockables? And it had some samurai bad guy who had a fur collar?
It really is too bad that this game was not all that great.
The best one in the series storywise has still got to be number 2.
Though for gameplay mechanics I did like how 1 worked.
@Witzbold: You serious? Way of the Samurai 2 brought me to my knees with how awful it was. The voice acting made me cringe, I couldn't figure out how the hell to navigate that city, everything looked ugly compared to the pristine setting of the first one... the bloody thing actually made me lose my faith in games, at least for a while. =_= And I had been really looking forward to it at the time.
(I just realized that you were referring to the storyline of 2 being superior as opposed to the entire game trumping the first one. Eh well, I needed that rant. ;P)
This game wasn't all that great? I thought it hadn't been released; did you play an imported version or somesuch?
@Rainspirit: I have the Japanese version hence living in Japan and being a fan of Acquire games. Spoke with some members of the team too nice folks who love what they do. They seemed real happy to hear praise from a fan during the TGS when had stopped by their small booth on business day a few years back.
Just that the flow of 3 and how slowly the story progresses with no real sign in regards to what to do does not help all that much either. Very bland characters so you do not get attached to the world at all.
Where as in number 2 it felt more like an alive city with all of the characters and such. Plus how the multiple factions worked out was quite well done.
The only difference between 1 and 2 is basically 1 was a lot more open in the sense that it was a free roaming world "zones" still existed but you had to walk to them. Number 2 was you had to select areas on the map that you wanted to go to so that took away from the immersion of being in the world itself. Basically between 1 and 2 that was the only real point I didnt care for. Both games it was quite easy to break ones weapon if you were not careful so cant really fault either there. 1 was a bit more difficult due to the combat not being as refined as 2 though.
Combat is basically the same as the other 2 games, thankfully the weapons do not break as easily.
Since the game itself did not seem to push anything all that new or feel any larger than the predecessors I didnt see a reason for it to be on the PS3 either originally. So it must have been one hell of a costly gamble for Acquire who isnt exactly the largest developer house.
@Witzbold: That is a shame. Way of the Samurai 2 frequently found its way back into my PS2 because of all the different choices and extras as well as the unique combat system. I'll still pick up 3 to support the series, but my expectations have been somewhat lowered.
please re-edit, I'm confused? do you mean it's getting a US Port? or it's being ported to Xbox360 (which it was on at launch). Oh, I love the featurette for this game on Xboxlive, the host is killing everyone including old people.
@Thut: Bushido Blade 2 happen. It change everything that made the first popular (aka, introduction of special attacks, energy bars, getting hit no longer damage your body).
Would love if they made a game like the first Bushido Blade. I still remember the stale mate with my friend for 10 minutes as we read each other waiting for that perfect moment to strike...then we both hit our legs and become limp...then I manage a stab and kill him. Most intense fight I can remember and it was mostly staring xP
@daknight: I thought I was the only one who loved Bushido Blade 1. The intensity of picking a stance and waiting to strike knowing a match can last a second or 20 minutes if you are good at parries and blocks.
Part 2 sucked. I never bought it. Damn we should start a company to make a game like Bushido Blade 1 only with modern graphics.
yeah, it doesnt look good, but the series never stressed graphics. i loved part 1, was disappointed by 2 but would really like to give this one a go, on whatever platform.
i dont care about most lame 3rd party games becoming whores. i just hop sega will never release Valkyria Chronicles on 360. i would hate to see such an amazing game going to 360.
@laser beams: I don't know much of anyone who did that other then people who didn't get to play it when it was wining game of the year awards left and right. Most of the people who did play it on the platforms it came out on were happy the PS3 crowd got it when it was announced... the people that cared that is.
Now if we really want to represent it correctly, we could call it the FFXIII syndrome, the Tekken syndrome, or perhaps the GTA syndrome. Remember the petitions? Not trying to sling mud here as I'll be the ones to tell you that exclusives don't help anyone one besides the platform holder but it's important to remember who held most of the exclusives last generation: the river of butt-hurt can logically only flow one way.
Here's the thing that erks me about the whole graphics issue. Here ([ps3.ign.com]) are the screens from the PS3 games. They're exactly the same stuff being shown for the 360 piece on Famitsu so it leads to two things:
- These are graphics place holder and the developer took the extra time to put a new coat of paint we haven't seen yet. If this is the case then people should reserve their judgment until they see the new graphics
- This game is a straight port and will probably offer nothing new but will allow people to experience it who didn't own a PS3 but had a 360.
Either way, I'm not sure what the hate is here. These graphics seem passable at the least. It's no GoW2 but most things aren't but are still fun. Besides, I haven't read anywhere saying this was going to be some graphical hallmark of gaming.

I found this sentence to be very confusing, Brian. How about:
"Action adventure game Way of the Samurai 3 is getting an Xbox 360 port as well as an English localization, apparently."
Back on topic: Yeah, that game looks cuh-razy! Image 3 would make a good NMH boss.
