“In just one week we have a half a million people playing WAR online, and the ranks of Order and Destruction are growing at a record-breaking pace for a new MMORPG,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “We spent years working to provide players with the most stable, epic, and polished online world we could, but it is the players that have truly brought the Age of Reckoning to life.”

Well done, Mythic! I have to say, the game's RVR combat has grabbed me. I am not normally a PVP type of person, but last Saturday morning saw me not only battling to take back the contested area near the Order starting point, but shouting rallying cries in general chat, telling people the forces of Order needed them. "Come on, ya cold-bloods! This is what ye signed up for!" I am such a dork.

Half a Million Players Enlist in the Armies of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning!

<![CDATA[ Overlooked Warhammer Devs Get Their Due Credit ]]> We heard last month that a bunch of people were going to be left out of Warhammer Online's credits. Didn't seem like the right thing to do, especially in the wake of similar fiascos involving Manhunt 2 and Okami. Well, turns out Mythic are now going to do the right thing, and will be making the entire credits - which will contain everyone that ever worked on the game - available online. And not just for WAR; they're going to go back and do this for Dark Age of Camelot as well. The full statement announcing the move (made by the IGDA's Jen MacLean) can be found after the jump.

Dear Members and friends,

In the August newsletter ( http://www.igda.org/newsroom/newsletter_0808.txt ), I criticized Mythic’s credits policy specifically, and the industry in general, for not adopting inclusive credit standards. I’d like to set the record straight on a number of things that have happened over the past month.

When the credits story first appeared, Mark Jacobs, the GM of Mythic, was in the middle of a series of interviews in New York. After an interview with N’Gai Croal of Newsweek and Level Up blog, Mark asked N’Gai for his thoughts on the subject. N’Gai suggested simply putting the full credits online. Mark is in the process of implementing N’Gai’s suggestion, and in doing so, Mythic will move towards a greater level of credits inclusiveness.

I’ve known Mark for more than 10 years now, and he’s always been a strong proponent of the online games industry and an ethical businessman. Mark was honest about a difficult subject and immediately after the interviews ended, he began a process of formulating new credit policies. Unfortunately, when the previous newsletter was sent out, Mark, unbeknownst to the me, was quietly continuing to work on a new credit policy for the studio. Mark, I regret that my comments caused you personal and professional distress.

The Mythic team is also taking the following steps to address credit policies:
- In-game and manual credits will be reserved for the launch team.
- Mythic will create an online database listing the name and title of everyone who contributed to a project, regardless of current employment status. Additionally, the studio will make best efforts to provide this information for its previous online games.
- Mythic has committed to working with the IGDA, leading game industry history and credit sites and other interested parties to establish a credits feed, listing all contributors, to promote fair and accurate credit reporting across the industry.
- Mark Jacobs will consult with the IGDA Credits Standard Committee to offer guidance on the issues and challenges posed specifically by MMOs.

Fair and accurate credits and transparent standards for crediting remain a pervasive problem in the industry, and I applaud Mythic for taking steps to address this issue. I’m personally looking forward to Mark’s involvement with the Credit Standards Committee, not only because of his depth of experience in online games, but because, more importantly, his personal commitment to fair and accurate credits sets an outstanding example for industry leadership.

My newsletter intros usually end with a call to action, and this one is no exception. We must continue the dialogue on credits, and on other topics like quality of life, that have a direct impact on the lives of game developers. Get involved, discuss these issues with your peers, and please join me in recognizing Mythic’s new crediting efforts.

Once again, the IGDA’s credit standards info is at:

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Does Not Heart Gold Farmers ]]> Mark Jacobs, co-founder of Mythic Entertainment, does not like gold farmers. He will not tolerate them in his game, Warhammer Online. Posting on his blog, Jacobs writes:
I hate gold sellers/spammers. No, that’s not strong enough, let me try again. I HATE GOLD SELLERS WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING. Ah, that’s better. Now, why do I hate them you may ask? I hate them for a number of reasons, most of which have been detailed in various interviews I’ve done over the years. And now that they have taken their obnoxiousness to new levels with gold service spamming, I HATE GOLD SPAMMERS EVEN MORE NOW THAN EVER BEFORE.

Remember: Mark Jacobs does not like gold farmers. So what are he and his crew doing about them?

Since WAR launched we have been banning these jerks like crazy. As of Saturday Night, we had banned about 400 of them. My CSRs have a zero tolerance policy. We don’t wait and let them stay in the game and ban them en-masse, my guys ban their useless, time-consuming butts right away. We have a strike team whose sole job it is to get these guys off our servers as quickly as possible.

Zero tolerance, strike teams...these guys aren't banning because it's their job, they're banning because they love it.

A banning we will go, a banning we will go. Heave ho off the servers yo, a banning we will go! [OGAANM, via Gamasutra]

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Reg Deadline Slips A Few Days ]]> A bit of outrage is stirring among Warhammer Online players who pre-ordered the game, expecting to be able to play through September 22th before having to enter the registration key from a retail box copy. A post at the official Warhammer Online website yesterday revealed otherwise. Now the deadline is *checks watch* several hours ago, so folks who opted for slightly slower shipping now find themselves waiting a weekend to return to their characters, or in extreme cases scrambling for a retail version of the game just to keep themselves from going through withdraw.

We'll be talking to the folks at Mythic shortly regarding the apparent change of plans. Until then, feel free to speculate in the comments section. Perhaps start a betting pool It's Friday, go crazy.

Update: Mythic folks were too busy to talk, but they have posted an update on the site announcing that Amazon, GoGamer, EA Store and The Source (CE online) pre-orders have had their time extended until the 22nd. Full text after the jump.

Folks,

Good, bad or ugly, Mythic has always had the integrity to stand up for what we think is the right thing to do in any situation. I don’t expect everyone to agree but I’ve never intentionally made a decision to hurt the community and/or our players and I don’t intend to start now. For the last couple of days we’ve been dealing with a very difficult and complicated situation. Sadly, there are lots of moving parts and sometimes it takes both a bit of elbow grease to get things working properly.

Here’s where we stand right now. As of this morning, we deactivated a large number of accounts and ended the Head Start for our game. At the same time, we’ve been in touch with the retailers, both online and brick-and-mortar, and while we are getting great data on the number of people who will get their game today; there is still a relatively small number of people who won’t be able to get them due to shipping issues (no matter what the issues are, whose fault, etc.).

So, after a lot of conversations I’m happy to announce that over the next few hours we are going to extend the grace period for all customers of Amazon, GoGamer and the EA Store till the 22nd of September. Based on the data we have gathered, these companies account for just about all the customers that were concerned about their chance to get into the game today. Thus, if you currently have an account with us, you’ll be able to get back into the game while you wait for your game to be delivered. Of course, all characters are still intact and no billing of any credit card has taken place (it couldn’t, the account still has free time on it) since the accounts were simply deactivated not wiped.

We have been assured by all the brick-and-mortar retailers that they got their shipments in the stores already so if you needed to go to a store to pick up your game, the units are in stock everywhere. We will be monitoring the situation closely over the next twenty-four hours of course.

As I’ve said countless times, we will do the best we can in any situation to make it right and I hope you agree with have done so again. I thank the community for its support, especially for this rather thorny problem.

Mark

Update: 2:33 PM EDT - This offer has been extended to individuals who pre-ordered the Collector's Edition through The Source.

<![CDATA[ Cut Content To Return In Warhammer Online ]]> In July, a bunch of stuff got cut from Warhammer Online. Sad news. But don't despair! It'll be making its way back into the game down the line. And not as paid DLC or a paid expansion, either, just as part of the game's regular, free updates. Mythic made no mention specifically about just what was due for a reprieve, but since the July cuts were a bunch of playable classes and some cities, we'll presume that's what they're talking about.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online's Head Start Dates Revealed ]]> The Warhammer Online "open" is in full swing (sorry about the mess, Europe), though while getting an early look at the game is certainly nice and all, the retail head start is where the real action is at. Mythic Entertainment today reveals that folks who pre-ordered Warhammer Online will get a chance to start building their characters come September 14th, four days before the retail launch. Oh wait, did I say folks who pre-ordered? I meant folks who pre-ordered the Collector's Edition. Those who opted to reserve the standard edition will get access on Tuesday, September 16th, which is only a two-day head start. It's Mythic's way of showing their scalable appreciation for your interest in their product.

Some of you might say this is paying extra for an advantage over other players, which is not true. This is paying extra for a box of cool stuff *and* an advantage over other players. Silly.

Mythic Entertainment Announces Head Start Program Dates for Warhammer Online

Get ready for the worldwide WAAAGH! Mythic Entertainment announced today that North American players who have pre-ordered Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) will be able to get the jump on creating their characters and exploring the world when the game’s “Head Start” program begins on September 14th.

The “Head Start” program offers players early access to the game and a chance to join the Realm War before the servers officially go live on September 18th. Players that have pre-ordered the standard edition of the game will be granted “Head Start” access on Tuesday, September 16th at 7am EDT. The lucky fans who pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition will be able to log in even earlier and begin play on Sunday, September 14th at 7am EDT.

Whether players choose to join the fight as an incendiary Bright Wizard or a shadowy Witch Elf, the characters they create during the “Head Start” program will carry over their skills, abilities, weapons and career rank into the game when the servers officially open to the general public on the Day of Reckoning – September 18th.

Based on Games Workshop's epic tabletop fantasy war game, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm game play that will immerse players in a world of perpetual conflict for years to come. Available for PC, WAR is rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Goes Gold, Gold Seller Gives Out Beta Keys ]]> It's a press release twofer! Mythic Entertainment has announced that Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has gone gold, with the game shipping to stores in time for servers to go live on September 18th, and the gold farmers are ready for it! "Internet gaming service" SwagVault has announced that they'll be giving away 50 beta keys for the game via randomly selected email entries received between now and September 5th, giving players a chance to experience the game for themselves before deciding to buy. They'll also be giving out beta access to folks whose order numbers contain the number sequence 8907, which coincides with the open beta date of September 7th, 2008.

So how exactly does a gold seller wind up with 50 beta keys for an MMO from Mythic Entertainment, a company that has gone after such enterprises legally in the past and won? I'm going to go ahead an assume they used bots.

<![CDATA[ IGDA: Warhammer Credits Snub "Disrespectful" ]]> There are a ton of former Warhammer Online developers who haven't made it into the game's final credits. And they are not happy. And understandably so! That's months, sometimes years of work, going totally unrecognised. Well, the IGDA (International Game Developers Association) are on the case, calling the snub "disrespectful" and using it as the latest example as to why the industry should adopt their idea for a set of universal crediting guidelines.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Latest Game To Dog Former Devs In Credits ]]> Warhammer Online has been in development for years now. And as a project has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Contributing to both those ups and downs have been literally hundreds of staffers who have worked with developers Mythic over the years, from the game's announcement in 2005 through their acquisition by EA through to today. But in a move that's sure to reignite the controversy over crediting in the videogame industry, only those currently employed at Mythic will be recognised in the game's credits. A former Mythic dev has told Shacknews:
This has been an ongoing problem in this industry for many years. I spent three years on WAR and I, including many other people who spent just as much if not close to the same amount of time, will NOT be credited in the game.

I was told they made SURE to not include anyone in the list who was not at the office the day of the credit list creation. This is wrong on many levels and should not go unnoticed.

Sure, many will point to the film business, and say the exact same thing happens there, particularly with screenplays. But you know what? That doesn't make it right.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Loses Four Cities, Four Classes ]]> The good news? Warhammer Online just launched its Guild Beta. The bad news? There's a bit less game for the Guilds to beta. In an interview with MMORPG.com, Mythic Entertainment VP and General Manager Mark Jacobs explains that in order for the game to be ready for launch, certain sacrifices had to be made, including nixing four of the six staring racial capital cities in favor of one for each faction, and getting rid of four of the classes that they just couldn't make work. On the cutting board are the Choppa (Greenskin), the Hammerer (Dwarf), the Blackguard (Dark Elf), and the Knight of the Blazing Sun (Empire)...two DPS classes and two tank classes.

“Of all of the news in this interview, this is the worst. Having to cut these guys out, even though it’s the right decision, I am really sorry that we have to do it. I truly am. I don’t like going to the guys and telling them ‘hey sorry, we’ve got to cut these guys out. They’re just not good enough but that was what we had to do.”

Yikes. Racial cities at launch will now be Altdorf (Empire) and Inevitable City (Chaos), with the Greenskins, Dwarves, and Elves homeless until later on down the line. Note that these are not starting areas, but bases that figure into RVR combat later in the game.

It really is shocking to see such large chunks of content cut out so close to the game's release, but I suppose it's better than just including a bunch of crap you weren't satisfied with and hoping to polish it off after the game went live. At least Jacobs didn't beat around the bush or try to sugarcoat things.

“We’ve always believed that it is important to go to the community with both good news and bad,” he said. “Whether it’s the state of the games, or just talking in the forums, we’re professional enough to confront bad news head on and not try to hide it and not try to play games and wait until the last minute when people have already bought the game to tell them. We will not play those kinds of games.”

Ever since that one summer where I did nothing but play Dark Age of Camelot all day long (Go Avalon!), Mythic Entertainment has struck me as one of the most community-centric MMO companies in the industry. Sure, this is a heaping helping of bad news, but all is not lost, right?

<![CDATA[ The PC At E3 - The Keyboard And Mouse Brigade ]]> While we've taken a good hard look at what we expect from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony during E3 2008, we've not yet touched on the original gaming platform, the personal computer. Back during my first visit to E3 in 1998, PC gaming made up a relatively large portion of the show, with PC publishers large and small showing off everything from big-name titles to tiny indie games like Space Bunnies Must Die. The new E3 has changed that a great deal. Smaller companies who might have once brought their games to the Expo for exposure to retailers and publishers just can't justify the space to show off their wares...and why should they? In the age of high-speed internet, smaller companies can deliver a demo to the press in minutes, so the PC presence has definitely dwindled at the event.

Of course dwindled doesn't mean died, and there are still plenty of PC games on hand, particularly in the MMO department. As the most pirate-proof genre in the industry, we'll see no shortage of MMO titles at E3, but other than that particular genre we can expect PC exclusive titles to be few and far between.

On the MMO front we've got plenty to look forward to, with several major publishers showing off products. Sony Online Entertainment will be there showing off Free Realms, The Agency, and of course, DC Universe Online. EA and Mythic Entertainment will be marching Warhammer Online back and forth, and there's a good chance we'll see something from Codemasters as well. Even Maple Story and Combat Arms company Nexon will be on hand to add to the MMO domination.

Notable absences on the MMO front include Blizzard, who just finished revealing Diablo III at their own event, and NCSoft, who I suppose had more important things to do.

Other than the massively-multiplayer games, most of the big PC offerings at E3 are multiplatform titles like Bethesda's Fallout 3. You know...the games we keep seeing announced for PC and "next-gen" consoles.

There are exceptions, of course. BioWare's PC RPG Dragon Age: Origins should certainly cause a stir. Other EA PC titles to be seen include Spore and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3. I also expect we might see a bit more of The Sims 3, though of course that game was absent from their line up press release.

Other notable PC titles include Left 4 Dead, Half-Life 2: Episode 3, Crysis: Warhead, Far Cry 2, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II, Operation Flashpoint II, Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization, Space Siege, and Empire: Total War.

A nice line up, certainly, but these are all games we know about. Hell, we've known about some of these for years. Will E3 hold any surprises for the PC gamer? Will LucasArts reveal the Star Wars MMO BioWare is working on? Will new technology be unveiled that will change the face of PC gaming forever? Can any PC news top Blizzard's announcement of Diablo III? PC gamers speak up! What do you want to see out of the PC at E3?

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Enters Guild Beta Stage ]]> It's full speed ahead for EA Mythic's Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning as the game enters the final phase of closed beta testing, the Guild Beta. This is the stage where guilds from other games who signed up for beta as a whole will gain access to the game en masse in order to test out the newly implemented guild and heraldry features, as well as the individual servers' capacity for drama.

“WAR’s Guild Beta is here and some of the world’s most experienced MMO players will now get a chance to play one of the most anticipated MMOs of all time,” said Mark Jacobs, vice president and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “We look forward to seeing them beat, bash and burn their way through the world that we have created for their enjoyment. It’s going to be a lot of fun and it’s going to be glorious!”

The WoW guild I was in when we signed up for the Warhammer beta has long since dissolved, reformed, dissolved again, and split up into a series of tiny, ineffectual guilds with no hope of ever accomplishing anything. Such is the way of all things.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Crafting Exhaustively Explained ]]> Want to know everything there is to know about Warhammer Online crafting? Do you want it badly enough to listen to EA Mythic GM and Warhammer Online lead designer Mark Jacobs drone on and on and on and on about it? You might think you are, but after a couple of minutes you might be tempted to just hit the jump and get what info you can from the press release in order to save your sanity.

In short, Warhammer Online's crafting consists of alchemy apothecary and talisman making, with several gathering professions to help back those up. It isn't a recipe based, so you aren't likely to find yourself with an inventory full of crap you can't use. You'll be able to harvest items by cultivating plants, stripping the flesh off of animals, scavenging corpses, and Magical Salvaging, which is like disenchanting, only with a ridiculous name.

Don't take my word for it though! Take Mark's, for thirteen minutes. I'll be napping if you need me.

EA Mythic Reveals the Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ Crafting System
Highly Anticipated MMORPG Introduces Innovative System That Allows Crafters to Create Potions, Talismans, and More to Aid Them on the Field of Battle

FAIRFAX, Va.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—EA Mythic, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS), unveiled new details for the crafting system in Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR). With two crafting abilities (Apothecary and Talisman Making) and four supporting gathering skills (Cultivating, Magical Salvaging, Scavenging and Butchering), the MMORPG incorporates an innovative crafting system to aid players in their fights on the battlefield’s of WAR.

“Crafting is a beloved MMORPG element for many players, however, it can often feel like an unnecessary addition to the game,” said Mark Jacobs, general manager of EA Mythic and WAR’s lead game designer. “The crafting system I’ve envisioned for WAR is innovative, fun and doesn’t require hours and hours of grinding materials, items or recipes in order to succeed. It is a system that is tied directly to your Realm’s ongoing war effort whether you are a player who loves PvE, RvR or simply crafting in general.”

The Apothecary crafting ability allows players to create all manner of useful potions, lotions and powders to heal, enhance stats, or cause damage to others. By combining various ingredients, players will even have the opportunity to “design” their own potions according to their needs. The second crafting ability, Talisman Making, will allow players to make useful items imbued with magic powers to be worn by a character.

WAR’s gathering skills produce the raw materials required for Apothecary and Talisman Making:

Players can train themselves in Cultivating, and plant seeds and spores in order to harvest weeds and fungi, components frequently used in Apothecary creations.
Magical Salvaging lets players break down magical items, converting them into fragments and essences that can be used in the crafting of Talismans.
Scavenging and Butchering are used to collect unseen resources off of the corpses of slain creatures – Scavenging allows players to recover hidden items from more intelligent creatures, while Butchering allows players to collect meat, skin and bones from non-sentient beasts.
Crafting in WAR is not about grinding for raw materials to create beneficial items, but about using developmental processes that don’t interfere with the Realm vs. Realm™ battles that are central to WAR. For example, a character with Cultivating training can continue to grow weeds and fungi even while laying siege to the enemy’s city.

<![CDATA[ Best Chance of Console MMO? Nintendo. (Oh?) ]]> Face it, MMOs are for PCs, not consoles. Maybe one day someone will figure it how to get it on a console. EA Mythic creator director Paul Barnett thinks he knows who: Nintendo. Says Barnett, currently working on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning:

You would have to build something very console centric from the get-go. I think probably the best chance of someone doing something like that is Nintendo — doing something crazy that no one expects.

Perhaps Barnett has confused "crazy" with "correct," but hey, who knows? Nintendo's surprised us before.

<![CDATA[ Australia And Friends Added To Warhammer Online Launch ]]> The worldwide launch for EA Mythic's Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning just got a bit more worldwide. Recognizing the legion of Warhammer fans in Australia and New Zealand, the two countries along with Southeast Asia will bet getting the game the same time those of us in Europe and North America do, complete with their own servers so they don't have to mingle with dirty Americans. EA Mythic VP Mark Jacobs breaks out 'down under' so I don't have to.

"Warhammer is a world-wide franchise with a strong following in Australia and New Zealand. By placing our own server down under and running customer service out of EA Mythic, we can ensure that when we launch WAR, Oceanic players will experience the same quality of game play and customer service as North American players"
While players in the region will still have the option of connecting to North American servers, I'm hoping they stay on their own side to keep them from propagating their drop bear propaganda. I made a special spiky hat, you lying bastards!

"Warhammer is a world-wide franchise with a strong following in Australia and New Zealand. <![CDATA[ World Of Warcraft Makes MMO Making Easier ]]> mmohelper.jpg Here's a rather interesting viewpoint on World of Warcraft's MMO genre dominance. Rather than seeing the Blizzard game's dominance as a detriment to new games, EA Mythic's senior designer Josh Drescher suggest that it actually makes developing a new MMO easier.
"If you actually look at the MMO-sphere right now, that is since WoW launched, the vast percentage of MMOs that launched after it have been successful," Drescher explained. "Obviously no one has eclipsed the 10 million subscriber number, but there have been numerous titles that have come out on different platforms and multiple genres all over the world that have been far more successful than MMOs had been previously."
It's an amazing bit of insight that I hadn't taken into account before. Millions of people are now ready for massively multiplayer games, whereas before World of Warcraft the market was a great deal smaller. While WoW still controls a massive chunk of the market, it's a bigger market than ever before. My girlfriend, who was never much of a gamer before WoW is now looking at Age of Conan and Lord of the Rings Online...living proof of the point.

<![CDATA[ GigaMedia Signs Warhammer Online Distribution Agreement ]]> whonline.jpg Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong are also going to have Warhammer Online to look forward to — GigaMedia and EA recently announced an agreement to distribute the game in the three places. EA and GigaMedia announced last November plans to distribute NBA Street Online in the same three territories, so this is building on a previous relationship. Sadly, since the press release is not coming from a Mainland company, there's no delightfully bad prose; the standard fare release is after the jump.

GigaMedia Signs Top EA MMORPG Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™

Adds to Company's leading portfolio and massive pan-Asian platform

HONG KONG, January 31, 2008 - GigaMedia (NASDAQ: GIGM) announced today it has secured an exclusive license from Electronic Arts to offer and operate the highly anticipated game Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Warhammer Online is a ground-breaking new massively multiplayer online role-playing game ("MMORPG") set in a fantasy world of war and constant combat. Based on Games Workshop's 25-year tabletop fantasy war game series Warhammer, Warhammer Online creates a rich and immersive virtual world for hundreds of thousands of players to experience the epic nature of war and the glory of battle.

Created by the acclaimed studio EA Mythic, developers of the hit title Dark Age of Camelot™, Warhammer Online is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2008 according to numerous industry publications. Over 500,000 gamers have registered for its closed beta test, one of the most successful closed betas for any MMORPG ever.

"We are very excited to work with EA to bring such a blockbuster title to Asia," stated GigaMedia President Thomas Hui. "We expect Warhammer Online's Realm vs Realm™ combat and Public Quests™ to be enormously popular with hard-core gamers."

"We are thrilled to bring Warhammer Online to Asia and further strengthen our collaboration with GigaMedia as a strategic partner - bringing the hottest digital entertainment to millions," stated EA Asia President Jon Niermann. "We are confident that, together with GigaMedia, Warhammer Online will be a tremendous success."

Warhammer Online thrusts players into a grim world of perpetual conflict to fight for the Realms of Order (Dwarfs, High Elves, and Empire) or Destruction (Greenskins, Dark Elves, and Chaos). Next-generation Realm vs. Realm game play ensures that players are never fighting alone. With an army of allies at their back, players will defend their homeland, invade enemy realms, and ultimately lead the siege of their enemy's capital city. Every aspect of the game - every player, every quest, every encounter, and every battle - can turn the tide of the ongoing war and mean victory for a player's realm!

In Warhammer Online, for the first time ever, players can engage in Public Quests - multi-stage, communal quests to be completed by allied players fighting together against overwhelming odds. They can also embark on an epic quest to complete the Tome of Knowledge and unlock Warhammer lore, detailed monster information, new abilities, rewards, and major story plotlines. Drawing from a quarter century of highly detailed source material, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will bring Games Workshop's fantasy world to life in a way that will allow players to create characters destined for great deeds on the field of battle.

Warhammer Online is expected to launch in the second half of 2008.

<![CDATA[ Mythic Puts Warhammer Online Beta On Ice ]]> Reception for the Warhammer Online beta has been nothing short of a success. That's why Mythic and EA are shutting it down for two months. Wait. What? According to a post on the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Herald from community elf James Nichols, the beta will return to alpha until December, giving Mythic an opportunity to add content, address issues and, in general, polish the thing up while being unmolested by beta testers.

Does this mean Warhammer Online is in a bad spot? Not at all, says WOAR developer Mark Jacobs on the F13 forums.

He addresses player concerns that Mythic are in panic mode, either retrofitting the game for a more World of Warcraft-like experience or dealing with publisher EA meddling in the team's business. Going offline for a couple months is a good thing, he stresses, not reason for seeking the nearest ledge.

The beta is shutting down today, but promises to return in December even beta-ier.

<![CDATA[ Bring On The Elves ]]> As promised, EA Mythic revealed the final two armies for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning at the Games Convention last month, and here are some hot concept arts and renders of the dark elves and high elves to prove it. The high elves in particular bring to mind Michael Moorcock's famous antihero Elric, which of course means you'll find yourself fighting against or alongside a whole horde of Elriks and Lrics come the games launch, along with the requisite dark elf rangers named Drizzzzt. Hit the jump for the back story on these two new factions.

Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning Armies of WAR - High Elves and Dark Elves

The High Elves

"We the Asur are a noble people, our long and proud history stretching back to a time when Men were still fur clad savages. Living in our fair isle of Ulthuan, set in the centre of the Great Ocean, we are far removed from the petty squabbles of the lesser races. Here we are able to practice magic and our arts, perfecting them for no reason other than the sheer joy of it."

The High Elves are an ancient people with a history that spans millennia. While the ancestors of man were little more than cave-dwelling primitives, the Elves built magnificent cities of glittering silver and white marble on their island home of Ulthuan. Elven scholars and explorers were the first to chart the stars and sail the world's oceans. The Elves were also the first race to mount an organized defense against the invading hordes of Chaos, beginning a war that continues to the present day

Early in their struggles against the Ruinous Powers, the Elves discovered that negative emotions such as fear, rage, jealousy and greed serve to fuel and strengthen the power of Chaos. Since that time, the High Elves have struggled to keep their intense passions tightly under control. Though intelligent and enlightened, all Elves have the capacity for savage violence. In order to suppress this dangerous and unpredictable aspect of their psyche, the lords of Ulthuan continually strive to eliminate all extremes of emotion; in High Elf society, to surrender to anger or lust is to show weakness. As a result, the High Elves live by a strict regimen of rules and codes and embrace a way of life that emphasizes harmony, balance and inner peace.

Magic is the lifeblood of the High Elves. With millennia to hone their skills, it is little wonder that the Mages of Ulthuan are among the most powerful practitioners of magic in the world. Their thoughtful, meticulous approach to the study of combat, coupled with their patience and mental discipline makes the High Elves deadly fighters, as well. On the battlefield, High Elf swordsmen are graceful, lithe, and lethal when they detect a weakness in their adversaries.

The High Elves will need all of their wisdom and skill if they are to survive the Age of Reckoning. When Finubar, Phoenix King and ruler of Ulthuan, gathers his finest warriors and sets sail for the Old World to aid the beleaguered Empire, he is unaware that he and his allies are pawns in an elaborate plot designed to leave Ulthuan vulnerable to an invasion. As Finubar's fleet of longships pass beyond the horizon, vast shadows fall across the island of Ulthuan. The skies are darkened by a great swarm of Black Arks laden with hateful Dark Elf warriors seeking to reclaim their ancestral home and destroy forever their despised cousins, the High Elves.

The Dark Elves

"Hear my lord of the Druchii. From the distant Cathy to the usurped lands of our accursed kin, from the cold lands of Norsca to the steaming jungles of the Southlands, our armies are rightfully feared. We alone keep alive the great and noble traditions of our ancestors of Nagarythe. Only we follow the path laid by mighty Aenarion the Defender. Only we follow the true way."

Long ago, when Chaos was first unleashed upon the world, the Elven champion Aenarion drew the dread Sword of Khaine from its altar and used its terrible power to save his people from annihilation. When Aenarion died, his son Malekith was deemed unsuitable for the throne. Although he was a mighty warrior, a great sorcerer, a brilliant general and the rightful heir, many Elves opposed his coronation. They feared he was too focused on war, and potentially a de-stabilizing influence on the High Elf race. In retaliation, over many years Malekith engineered a terrible civil war that divided the race of Elves into two factions.

It was the High Elves who emerged victorious and drove the evil Dark Elves out from the ancestral home of their race. Under the leadership of Malekith the Witch King and his Sorceress mother Morathi, the Dark Elves sailed across the Great Western Ocean and founded for themselves a new kingdom in the northern reaches of the New World. This land they called Naggaroth, meaning 'land of chill'.

Unlike the High Elves, who continually seek to suppress their passions lest they be overcome by them, the Dark Elves willingly embrace their hedonistic nature. Dark Elf society emphasizes individualism, selfishness, and pride. They have little regard for one another and even less for the other races of the world, whom they see as potential slaves and subjects.

In battle, the ruthless warriors of Naggaorth blend Elven discipline with savagery and ferocity, for the patron deity of the Dark Elves is Kaela Mensha Khaine, the bloody-handed God and the Lord of Murder. Nowhere is this more evident that in the beautiful and deadly Witch Elves, who serve in the Temples of Khaine and revel in violence and bloodshed.

Since their expulsion from Ulthuan, the Dark Elves have desired nothing more than to return to Ulthuan and avenge their defeat, reclaiming the land they believe to be theirs by right. In the Age of Reckoning, Malekith learns of an impending Chaos invasion of the Empire and uses this knowledge to set in motion a chain of events that will leave the island home of the Elves defenseless against an invasion. At the Witch King's command, a great fleet of Black Arks - great floating islands laden with soldiers, monsters, and engines of war - sets sail across the sea to conquer the island kingdom of Ulthuan and fulfill the destiny denied the Druchii so long ago.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Beta MMObbed ]]> When I suggested you sign up for the Warhammer Online closed beta, I didn't mean all at once.

Now Electronic Arts is reporting that over two hundred thousand people applied for the beta between North America and Europe, and if anyone at all followed my advice they're going to have a hard time ferreting through hordes of female fans passionate about Warhammer who want a hand at making what they believe to be the next MMO sensation an overwhelming success. <![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Careers - Witch Hunter ]]> The latest Warhammer Online career profile takes a break from battling Magneto and performing on Broadway to reprise his role as Van Helsing. The Witch Hunter is a class dedicated to stomping out corruption in the land while looking stylish. The utilize guns, swords, and holy gadgets in their never-ending war against evil. Seriously, just go watch Van Helsing featuring Hugh Jackman. Then come back and check out the artwork and career profile below. Same guy.

Also more than likely what you'll find me playing once the game is launched. I'm a sucker for floppy hats and coats that catch the wind dramatically.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Career Profile - Empire Witch Hunter

The Witch Hunter

These poor, simple folk - too fearful or too dull-witted to see the vulgarity and evil in their own midst. They wail and complain about my... uncompromising methods, but who among you can say that hanging half a village is too high a price to pay for the assurance that corruption has been exposed and destroyed this day?

- Ernst Traugott, Templar Witch Hunter

The Witch Hunter is a tireless foe of Chaos, dark magic and witchery of all kinds. As the taint of Chaos continues to spread and more people are drawn to the dark arts, the Witch Hunters' role has become increasingly important to the Empire. Fast, cunning and deadly, they dispense merciless judgment upon any who serve Chaos. While the people of the Empire agree that the Witch Hunters' work is critically important, rare is the citizen who does not feel pangs of dread when they lay eyes upon one, for it is understood that most Witch Hunters would sooner burn an entire village to the ground than see a single follower of Chaos go free.

Witch Hunter Specialty
The Witch Hunter's sole motivation is rooting out and destroying corruption. To that end, they use the various tools and tactics available to them to weaken their opponents' strength and resolve via Interrogation before meting out final Judgment. Fast and agile, the Witch Hunter is dangerous in close-quarters, especially when approaching an unsuspecting or startled target from behind. The Witch Hunter will frequently employ holy water, chrisoms, blessed ashes and other relics to further increase the suffering inflicted upon their foes.

Playing as a Witch Hunter
Whether you're positioning yourself for a devastating strike against an unwary enemy or going toe-to-toe in the thick of the fight, there are few places on the battlefield where a Witch Hunter does not belong. In the face of your tireless assaults and interrogation, your enemies quickly wither and fall - be it by blade, bullet or torch. While your pistol can be a powerful and devastating weapon under the right circumstances, it is slow and awkward to reload in close-quarters. As such, you will make frequent use of the deadly speed and effectiveness of rapiers, knives, stakes, torches and daggers. You will also find it useful to anoint your weapons before a fight to dispatch your unholy enemies with even greater efficiency.

Fighting the Witch Hunter
The Witch Hunter relies heavily on his ability catch targets off guard or to distract them in the thick of a fight. A powerful melee fighter, he is at his most effective when he can move behind an enemy and unleash pistol shots or powerful strikes from his anointed blade upon them. As such, it is critical that you not lose track of a Witch Hunter in the heat of battle. Keep them at range if you can - as their pistols are unreliable from a distance - and stay in front of them if they close in on you. A bullet in the head or a blade through the heart await those who do not.

The Witch Hunter Look
- Lightly armored, with long cloaks and coats, wide-brimmed hats and buckled tunics.
- Wields off-hand pistols and main-hand rapiers, swords and torches.
- Ornamented with other tools of their craft such as stakes, daggers, relics, chains and emblems of the Cult of Sigmar or the Empire.

<![CDATA[ Beta Watch: Warhammer Online ]]> Time to earn those Warhammer bragging rights. EA Mythic has launched the signup page for the closed beta phase of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning in Europe and North America. Slots are sure to be extremely limited, and with the buzz surrounding the game I'd say the competition will be massive.

Having said that, here are a few tips for getting selected for an invite-only closed beta:

1. Research the game's theme and appear passionate about it, without sounding like a fanboy. Harder than it seems.
2. Say things like, "I believe that this game could be the next big MMO sensation, and want to have a part in helping it succeed."
3. Sign up as a female.

Play your cards right, and two years down the road you could be the guy who keeps saying, "Well I've been playing since closed beta," becoming that which you hate most.

<![CDATA[ Warhammer Online Pushed to 2008 ]]> warhammerskull.jpgThe game that many MMO fans and developers alike are touting as the best hope at breaking World of Warcraft's dominance on the genre, Warhammer Online, has been delayed until the first quarter of 2008. This according to the latest newsletter for the game, in which EA Mythic GM/VP Mark Jacobs explains the reasons for the delay.
We have made the decision to move our ship date for the US and Europe to the first quarter of 2008. (Release dates for Asia will be announced at a later date.) Since our acquisition by EA, we have been afforded many wonderful development opportunities and we plan to take full advantage of everything that is available. This includes taking several additional months to make the best MMORPG possible.

Hmmm. Delaying a game to make it better is generally a sound idea. It worked for WoW, after all. Just a little worried about how these new EA resources are going to affect the game. Too many cooks, too many ingredients...that sort of thing. Wouldn't want to see this MMO go the way of my poor, deceased Earth and Beyond.

I didn't get a chance to play Warhammer Online, but it looked an awful lot like a lot of other MMOs out there. I doubt spending ten minutes with it would have let me figure out the differences.
