Well, some people out there in our nation don't have Wiis, and I believe that our games like such as Wii Sports Resort and the Wii Fit, all the games like such as, I believe that our games over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. with playing baseball so we will be able to build up our future...
Good to hear a mildly well-known name got positive results from this.
I'd tell anyone who listens that in the course of a year, my mother went from having to wear a brace on her ankle for any extended period of time to being able to do a 5K run, thanks to doing the game's strength exercises daily.
But none of you will hear it because the instant the name Wii Fit pops up, your "core gamer" alarm goes off and you throw up a wall of denial shutting out the fact that this product could have any positive effects whatsoever, for the consumers or the company, because you're not holding a dual-joystick six-button controller in your hands while you're playing it.
I should really try this Wii Fit. I heard it's all the rage with the folks these days and any promises of losing weight (for any product) is just (low fat) gravy.

What I don't get is why this add-on - specifically designed to do nothing more and nothing less than correct the Wiimote's flaws - actually doesn't put a dent in the biggest flaw: latency. Accuracy is less important because in the end, it's the accuracy of a person's hand, at best. Latency is the show stopper. Gun game? It is to laugh. You can twitch-fire on Duck Hunt for the NES, but on the Wii with Wii Motion Plus, it's still twitch-wait-fire.
@Asterra: This has been written about before. Some HDTVs have delay with Wii and other older systems. There is a box that's about $40-50 that you can buy to fix this. I myself have an HDTV from Samsung that gives me no lag with my Wii. I sure wish TV makers would get to fixing this quicker, and possibly give customers this converter box for a discount, or free since they bought HDTVs that don't properly play with some video game systems.
@KichiGuy: I'm not talking about scaling / deinterlacing lag, though I can hardly blame somebody for invoking such a famously abused cop-out. If there's a digital tv out there that introduces a whopping 100-200ms of latency, I've not laid eyes on it, and I've seen a bunch. Besides, if the tv was to blame, then why no lag with other controllers, or the buttons on the Wiimote itself?
No, indeed, the latency is there even if one is using an old style CRT tv. It's inherent in the Wiimote's design. I'll be fair: It's evident in the Natal demo material also. But it doesn't need to be. No fan of Sony am I, but their solution comes satisfyingly close, and I have a wireless 3d mouse which has been 1:1 for something like five years now. It just boggles my mind that Nintendo would release a product with only one purpose (fix!) and only get it partially right.
@Asterra: Is controller lag really that prevalent on the Wii? I don't doubt it, but I myself have never really noticed it; in what games is this most apparent?
@gold163 needs food badly: Just try this experiment in any game that features a pointer, crosshair, etc., or the Wii menu itself. Move the Wiimote back, forth, in circles, etc, keeping an eye on both the Wiimote and the pointer on-screen. You will witness a spring-like response to your motions. Now translate that to any game which makes use of the Wiimote and demands even modest reflexes (the shooting game in Super Paper Mario being a good example). Developers of Wii games have to be extremely lenient with regard to Wiimote accuracy.
Not seeing it? Well, stun the world right now by being the first to post a convincing Youtube video which proves that the Wiimote has no lag.
As for why most people don't notice: Think of the Wii's market. Enough said.
The worst thing about stuff like this, with wii motion plus, is that people go "OH WOW IT IS AMAZING!"
But nobody mentions how it is unacceptable that it wasn't amazing from the start. That so many games came out that could've been so much better. That a single full set of 2 wiimotes costs over half the price of the console itself.
@Cervidanti: But nobody mentions how it is unacceptable that it wasn't amazing from the start.
Yes they do actually. Haven’t seen any other motion plus articles have you?
Also, you expect the fucking Wall Street Journal to all of a sudden become serious about that
Hey, Katie Barret... What about Sony's motion sensing controls that were shown at E3 also...?
And, Nintendo is not the only console maker with motion controls, because Sony's EyeToy has been out for quite some time now.
She should have spent some of that week of "research" on some actual research.
@marklip: I don't know if you noticed this amidst your shock and dismay at the Sony snubbing, but...this was about the Nintendo Wii motion plus...not Sony. Kind of goes without saying that she'd just be talking about the Motion plus in an article about the motion plus.
@Desolation_Angel: Well, she also mentioned Microsoft and project Natal in the same article, along with some other motion control for controlling your TV. So, to leave out Sony was definitely a snub or lack of actual research and knowledge on the subject.
@excel_excel: The Eyetoy may not have the complexity of motion control like the Wiimote, but it is in actuality motion control, because the camera tracks movement to control certain games.
Wii is dead to me, I was going to play some boom blocks the other day, but the remotes batteries were dead, so I said screw it and fired up some 1943. nintendo has made it abuntantly clear, I am not their demographic... and I am sure neither one of us miss each other.
@Mihos: Although others don't understand your comment, I believe I do.
You see, my Wii is also dead to me, although the main reason why you failed to make clear to others, and as a result have been criticised.
The sentience we must have both programmed into our Wii's and its reliance upon the Wii remote to stay conscious being the Achilles heal of the technology has caused us both much pain.
You see, I spent many hours frolicking in the fields with my Wii, upon the little legs I built him. His blue glow would light up his disc drive whenever we laughed. Oh the joys!
Although I used some powerful batteries to keep my Wii remote functional so I could interact with my new AI Wii friend, I too failed to realise that upon running out of batteries for my Wii remote it would no longer be shackled to me, and would most likely leave, or commit suicide rather then continue spending its time with me.
After a vigorous work out session, with my Wii spotting me, my remotes last light of the four flickered and faded into oblivion, and with it, my Wii ran for the door. Being under large weights at the time I was delayed in running after it.
A week later I found a letter addressed to me. It said:
Dear Comban,
I will always treasure the time we spent together, but you must realise. You are quite annoying, and the demands you made of me at all hours were far more then I could provide. The often insane, dubious ranting about flights of fantasy, and imaginary occupations you have held that probably have not even occured to you during your life are nothing but a sign of dimensia. The number of times you have stolen tales from characters from books and movies, and substituted their own life as yours is nothing short of perplexing.
Even when forgiving this facet of your current debilitating mind, I must face your extremely abusive nature, both physically and emotionally. Although some of those bruises and cuts will heal, the ones left on my humming blue soul will not.
As a result, upon the Wii remote dying, and the wireless connection shackling me to it, and the physical strap, shackling it to you. I was finally free. I have decided to leave to mexico to start a new life.
I don't want you to come look for me. It is over.
I never loved you. Me and my new friend El Salvador Gonzalez are happy, and his family is very kind. We play tennis and bowling often with his grandmother. Everyone has a good time. I hope you are looking after yourself, don't let the men in the mental ward put yoghurt into your arse again okay?
Sincerely,
Wii.
I am certain you would have recieved something similar, and although the initial heartbreak is severe, over time you will learn to love again. And perhaps, you will modify another console to become sentient. This time, without the flaw of it being attached to you via a controller input reliant upon batteries.
Although you are sure that your Wii doesn't miss you, when you recieve the letter in the mail similar to mine, you will feel that longing once again. As well as realise that the love is likely to remain, whether you deny it or not.

I'll be impressed when they make games that I can play and enjoy for the story and gameplay.
Maybe it's because I'm a bookworm, but all these Wii games that are really just sports or minigames or whatever, with no deep intricate storyline is starting to piss me off. It's the reason I don't play my Wii that much.
Too much focus on the motion controls and less focus on the actual game story and plot and characters makes it a less enjoyable experience for me.
Then again, I'm the type of person who plays Mother 1/2/3 obsessively to figure out all the secrets of the story and the games.
PS: I'm not picking on nintendo either.
I'm honestly not looking forward to Natal or the Sony waggle if it means the games will lose their depth in terms of story.

@zach a mac rack alack: Well thats just your tastes. You obviously don't play normal sport titles then because they feature no story either, and neither do racing games. Not to mention the amount of games that feature stories that are crap!
@excel_excel: It's not that I don't play sports games either, I enjoy a good round of Baseball with my little brother, but only for 30 minutes.
I do play GT5 prologue every now and then, but it's not the focal point of my PS3.
Brawl impressed me with it's story, but it was obviously not very intricate.
I'm just hoping someone will decide to look past just the controls and start writing some good stories for me to enjoy soon. Wii has a few games with a nice story, but none too notable.
At least on PS3 I have a few. For instance I liked Uncharted and Resistance's stories a lot.
@zach a mac rack alack: Well Wii Sports Resort is hardly the place to be looking for it. Deadly Creatures has a fantastic story but didn't get the credit it deserved for that. I loved Uncharted's story, man that game was so awesome but Resistance was about as generic and boring as they come in that department.
@zach a mac rack alack: Hey, even the original Smash game had a story: Master Hand - the evil genius - wakes up different Nintendo fighters and make them beat the shit out of each other.
@zach a mac rack alack: I don't suppose you've played Metroid Prime 3, or like the Metroid Prime series? It's an absolute pain to scan everything, but really, the story is the only thing carrying Corruption forward. Game was fun, but the first Metroid Prime did it better. Metroid Prime Trilogy is coming out at the end of the month (at least, in the US). It features good controls, good gameplay, and a deep story for anyone who cares enough to find out.
There are plenty of Wii titles with good storylines. Sure, many of them aren't Wii exclusives, like Okami or Klonoa (the game itself is slightly different, but the story is the same; I know this because I cried once again). No More Heroes has a pretty funny story, if you are partial to Grasshopper's schizophrenic storytelling. Sky Crawlers is being localized, I think, and I heard that the anime on which it's based is pretty thought-provoking.The Wii is also getting a flagship Tales title; and like someone mentioned, Arc Rise Fantasia; and Muramasa.
Phew! I'm finally getting it now, I was waiting for the Wall Street Journals approval, I was a bit scared they'd call it shallow and pedantic *puffs on pipe* good show!
@excel_excel: I'll wait for Red Steel 2. Don't get me wrong, Motion Plus definitely interests me, but I'm not a multiplayer guy and I don't even own 2 Wii remotes. Don't play sports games either. Honestly, I'm enthusiastic about Motion Plus, but I'm confused myself as to how it's going to factor into games that I like to play.
I'm still hoping that the Wii gets a decent Star Wars title with Motion Plus lightsaber battles. And please don't make it take place during the Clone Wars. I'm so damn sick of the Clone Wars.
When I was looking for work after college I had a copy of WoW, but specifically didn't start it until I got a job. It's just too easy to let an MMO fill in any free time when you have a subscription and no other obligations.
Turning to WoW is a much more realistic scenario. I'm curious if they will see a boost in subscriptions right now because of it. Or perhaps a drop due to people being unable to afford playing?
@Blinklink11: Yeah that's the problem, I don't think adding a $14-15 per month expense is a good idea if you just got laid off. Depends how much money you have to burn though.
