John Riccitiello gave a nice interview on MSNBC just now noting the video game price wars this season among other topics. These deep discounts are a bit troubling seeing how the country needs to spend spend spend to get out of this recession, but companies everywhere are killing their profit margins looking to attract consumers... leaving less money to budget for employees and the like. :/
I would feel worse if Gamestop didn't charge $55 for a used copy of LBP, a year after the thing came out. A competitor is lowering their prices and scaring the 'Stop? Good deal.
Why are these limited by console? Why is Dragon Age just on sale for the PS3, or Lego Rock Band just for the Wii?
I'd prefer if the price drops were uniform across all of the platforms. In those two examples, I don't own a PS3 and my Rock Band setup is for the 360, so my interest drops from "some" to "zero." It seems like they're limiting the effectiveness of the promotion this way.
That said, it looks like it could be intentional - maybe they're limiting platforms on titles that they expect to sell better on one system than another? Batman's a good indication of that; I know I'd get the PS3 version if I had a choice between the two because of the extra content.
Gamestop is really good at playing the victim lately. First they blame Mom and Pop stores for breaking the street dates on MW2 and LFD2 and others, now they blame Walmart for selling their items too cheap. It's all finger-pointing and no action from Gamestop, maybe they should drop the prices and...oh I don't know...stop opening their brand new games for no reason before they sell them to the public. There's a start.
This seems like an excessive drop to me, but I'm not exactly an expert on stocks. Wal-Mart offering deals on big video games would affect a significant portion of GameStop's holiday sales, but a list of 12 titles that's limited by console selection (Lego Rock Band is only on sale for the Wii, for instance) doesn't seem like enough cause a freefall in stock value.
GameStop, whose stores have been located in close proximity to Walmart to capitalize on the retail giant's foot traffic
They are?
Off the top of my head, I can only think of one shopping center in the area that used to have GameStop and Wal-Mart within walking distance. Emphasis on used to, because that Wal-Mart just moved and GameStop didn't. The vast majority of stores in my area are either standalone or in shopping malls.
@spiderweb1986: In Phoenix, pretty much everywhere there's a Wal-mart, there's a GameStop near by. I can name at least 5 locations. When I worked at GS we called it the Trifecta, because it was always a Wal-mart, a GameStop, and a Starbucks literally spitting distance from each other.
@fencermusashi: Maybe I just live in an area that's a bit of an anomaly, then. Wal-Mart is relatively new here - most of the stores in the area popped up in the last decade, give or take a few years.
I would see this as a temporary discount in the stock, as announcing a record Q4 next quarter will make everyone happy. However, I think it's nearing the top of its potential for the moment, barring some acquisition or other revenue generator.
@PwrGetter: My only 'wth!' would be for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It is awesome (there are other games I like, but this one is easily the standout).
However, I think there's some video game generational gap that exists, and if you didn't grow up during the original Console Wars (tm), the platformer doesn't have such a strong bond with ones heart.
@Omnimon: I'm probably not the oldest gamer, but I started with Ninja Gaiden on NES, and I am, or atleast was a pretty hardcore Nintendo fanatic, up until the Wii. I even loved the gamecube... but their unwillingness to offer a great look experience coupled with their renowned original first party software titles dissapointed me. I sometimes feel nostalgic for re-releases that are exclusive to the Wii, but I feel that still doesn't justify a purchase for me :(
@Slagathorian: There are other games I have enjoyed... Punch-Out!, Twilight Princess, No More Heroes, Zak and Wiki, Mario Party 8 (shoot me), Mario Kart Wii... yeah, I'm apparently a first party sucker.
@PwrGetter: Are you defining a re-release as anything using old IP? Hardly any of the games are what I would call a re-release (an upscaled, or possibly not even, port).
NSMBW is a completely new game, as was Mario Kart Wii, Zelda, etc.
But there I go again beating that first party horse. If it weren't for Nintendo's IP, I would be on your side, but I just can't resist their games.

Unless you own GamesStop stock, isn't this good news for the consumers?
