I loved James Arnold Taylor as Tidus. I know his performance wasn't perfect but it's not entirely the voice actors fault. I've read several posts on IMDb by JAT himself where he explains how much game voice over recording has changed and how much harder it was back when he recorded FFX. He even said that he wishes he could have played Tidus a lot looser than he did and was actually looking forward to doing Tidus again in Dissidia, and I can definitely say out of every voice actor in that entire game he really comes across as the only one who truly cares about the character he's voicing. Coming back to do Tidus wasn't just another paycheck for him, it's something he truly loved doing, and I love him for it.
Tidus's voice acting will always be memorable to me.

The video someone posted for Fox is actually not me. AJ was referring to the big over-the top announcer voice I do for Fox which can currently be heard on Fox Saturday nights for shows like Cops and America's Most Wanted.
Thanks to AJ for a great article I really appreciate it! and for those of you that have left comments about my voice just know I appreciate the nice ones a lot more than the negative ones. Oh and the photo of me they used is a odd one I admit, not the best look for me there. At award shows and such you never can tell how the photo will come out.

Ugh, I remember attending the Dear Friends Concert in 2004 and the Tidus guy was the MC of that concert. The minute he opened his yap about being the voice of Tidus, people were booing him. Then Nobuo Uematsu was brought on stage and all was made better.
@excel_excel:
I agree, he deserves some level of respect as any other good voice actor.
His voice is kind of more fitting as Ratchet though, I get a cartoony vibe from it.
Also gives off a little bit of an effeminate vibe.
That is probably why the woman bonded with the character a little better than the men. "This guy sounds sen-si-tive."
especially when daddy was making him cry, nonetheless, he is a good voice actor in my opinion.
"...video game dubbing is long and lonely work. Taylor said the script for Final Fantasy X was as thick as a phonebook and he'd do six hour sessions completely by himself in a recording studio."
Makes me wonder if that is why we get a lot of really shitty voice acting in video games (other than the obvious reason, which is that the actors don't give a flying crap and they're just cashing the check).
I won't say there is a better way to do it, but maybe we'd get better results if these people had other actors to work off of?
Unfortunately that probably blows the costs and schedules for games like FF out of the water. I'm sure they cut the scripts up so that they can bang out all the dialogue trees a lot quicker... but it still makes me think it could be done better.
@Yossarian: To be honest, the real killer in voice acting is the quality of the voice director. In almost all voice dubs, you do the dialog by yourself. It's extremely rare to see another actor. So you have to have a good director that can coach the actor to give a good performance in that circumstance.
You can tell immediately if there was a good director or not - even the most talented of actors will give bad work if the director is bad.
I'm an "aspiring", by which I mean I'm a wannabe :P, voice actor, and I can tell you it's not really for that reason at all. I've got acquaintances in the industry, very successful ones, and they've pretty much flat out told me it's a combination of the voice director not being qualified to do his job as he was just an audio guy promoted to the position, and voice acting often being an afterthought along with the rest of the audio. They're try to save money, not for the reasons you think, so they quite often just go with the first take. I've actually heard of directors recording warm ups and using them.
@Orian: Bingo, my friend. As a voice actor myself, I can confirm this. your director in dubbing is god, your performance hinges not only on your talents, but the perception of the director.

Wow he's changed this past decade... I remember watching the making of FFX DVD that came with the game and seeing him talk about Tidus; I remember him looking like a surfer dude type! How times change! (Or how crap is my memory!)
@excel_excel: I think it's meant to be bad like that, when they first do the laughing. It's meant to be forced, as if neither of them don't know how to show it properly - Yuna, because she's meant to be this stoic summoner with the fate of her friends and the entire world on her shoulder, who knows she's on the path towards her own death, and Tidus, because he's lost in a bizarre world to him, his home gone and destroyed.
But then they sort of realise how forced it is, and really, proprerly laugh with each other, and it's a bit touching.
Sorry, that's probably just the fanboy inside me trying to explain a poor translation =D
I don't understand how so many people don't understand this! It sounds like that in ALL languages, because the point of the scene is that in the utter despair of the world, they're forcing htemselves to laugh through the pain.
Which is why immediately after, their laughing becomes more realistic, because they start laughing for real at how ridiculous they sound,.
@WhiteMage: Thank you, thank you so much. I swear I thought I was the only person that got the point of that scene.
Hell, I've heard it in Japanese and Tidus sounds like a crow.
Plus the dialog from their friends after that scene should have been a big hint too. I mean, Lulu even tells them they all thought Yuna and Tidus had lost their minds.
@DigitalHero: I love Tidus, and ratchet is pretty cute, so I'm sad to see that the guy who does their voices can't hold a candle to them in the least. ;-;
As a Star Wars fan since before I was born (no, really! my mom saw the first movie when she was pregnant with me) and a current WoW addict, I really want to be excited about this game.
I have no doubt that the story, acting, and depth of the game universe will be top-notch, because this is BioWare and Star Wars that we're talking about.
My one concern, and the big thing I want to know about, is gameplay. Since this is an MMO, I don't want something that's all story and no action. Actually playing the game needs to be as fun as watching the story unfold. If they can nail that, then I will be there on day one, breaking the promise that I made to myself to never get sucked into another MMO.
@ach77: Amen on all accounts. I am also a WoW addict/Star Wars fan, and certain of BioWare's skill in writing, acting, and creating universes, combined with the excellent existing lore of the Star Wars 'verse. But they seem incredibly wary about showing us actual gameplay... which, in turn, makes me very nervous.
I'm in a slightly different position than you- I actually am looking for another MMO. I love WoW, but I started playing because my IRL friends did... and my IRL friends are getting tired. If we find a decent alternative, they will move on, and I will follow. These days, it's the only way we get to see each other (I had to move), so having a good MMO to play together is crucial. And frankly, I'd like to have some idea if ToR plays decently before I sink the cash into a new WoW expansion, which will almost certainly be released before ToR will.

@iam118: If you're going to read a Karen Traviss book, go straight for the good stuff. Republic Commando is fantastic, and has the only Star Wars characters I've cared about since Chewbacca died (Why in the fuck did they kill Chewie? Han should have died, it would have finished the storyarc better.)
@ThisDudeRufus: From what I have heard Lucas said they could not kill anyone with a speaking role. They decided growling/roars didn't count, or some such.
