You know, I'll probably be called a heretic, blasphemer and be unstarred and possibly banned, but...
...I don't really like the SMB Theme.
*dodges shoe*
I mean, it's not that it's a bad song, it's just that there is much, MUCH better 8-bit/NES music out there that I personally think is leaps and bounds beyond the Mario Bros. Theme (I'll leave it up to you to WILDLY (sarcasm) guess which series in particular I have in mind). Sure it's a classic, but I think people love the song so much simply because it was part of the icon of their childhoods more than because, you know, the song is actually good.
Though I do admit it is pretty neat that a laser cutter can do it pretty much perfectly. I just wished they'd use other, better (IMO) 8-bit musi-
@RockyRan: I agree, partially. I think the reason people like the theme so much, is not simply because it sounds fantastic, because in reality, it doesnt, it's an extremely simple song, but because of what it is related to. The mario game(s) that it came from are iconic and considered classic, and pioneering, thus, making it's theme also very memorable and VERY nostalgic. Also, everybody knows it, so it also wins points in the "hey! i know that song!" factor.
I, personally prefer the tetris theme, some megaman themes, and others more than the mario theme, however, none can bring me back like the simple, classic theme of that generic italian super-plumber. #mods
ATTN: Guy who taped it: Shut the hell up! "HEY GUYS THIS SOUNDS AWESOME WOW I WISH YOU COULD HEAR IT BUT YOU CAN'T SINCE I WON'T SHUT UP"
Though to be honest, "Stuff playing the mario theme" is getting really, really old. At least make it play something else. :\ Where's the zelda dark world theme, or something? Maybe To Zanarkand like that guy did with LBP? #mods
@Outkastprince: My sister just learned it on her violin out of love for me out of love for it.

Man, they sure have a lot of times on their hands. Inserting Mario's theme song into a laser cutter? That's just nerd gamer at it's best, they make me proud. -salutes- #mods
@Outkastprince: This is just the kind of superfluously cool geeked out shit that BoingBoing loves. I don't visit their site nearly as often as I should, which is stupid, as it's where I discovered Kotaku. #mods
@Outkastprince: Too bad the video doesn't have a more detailed explanation of how they did it. Yes, yes, they tuned the motor, I know. But that doesn't really tell us anything. I like to hear about the nuts and bolts (so to speak) of things like this.
Like the guy said (closer to the middle of the video than the beginning, really), fucking awesomesauce. #mods

@jayislost: Well, it seems they have a converter for MIDI to do this kind of thing now... at one time you had to do it all in control codes - I know there were some old SCSI HP scanners like the scanjet 3c/4c that have a "play tune" command. (I think Fur Elise is an easter egg built in, but can't find info...)
As far as I know it's just moving a stepper motor at different speeds in most of these cases - don't know what the codes used to control them look like though...
@fuchikoma: Oddly enough, the computer I had when these things were still around would always play that clip when I shut it down. I wish I could find that again... that would be awesome. #mods
Very awesome!
Best performance for violins I've ever saw for game music compilations, and I saw many of them.
Also, despite the image being far back, at least the sound was pretty good on the video..
Loved it for what it is: A group of musically talented teenagers sharing their love of gaming in their own way.
To everyone else getting their panties in a twist over minor details...your more then welcomed to not watch, or better yet, make your own video.
@Thut: I would argue that best soundtrack goes (IMHO) to Chrono Trigger.
However, I think Brutal Legend is going to be a new best gaming OST of all time contender.
This sucks - not because the music is bad, but because it's made into a JOKE, as always. This is actually one of the best-sounding (musically) performances of live video game music I've seen on YouTube, and yet just like Video Games Live, they decide to make a joke out of it and the laughter drowns out the actual art that's happening on-stage.
Yes, they do the humor well, but either make it funny or make it art - doing both just ruins the chance of fully appreciating either.
This is what I can't stand about Video Games Live (well, that and Tommy Tallarico's GIGANTIC EGO and apparent need to shred on an overly-amplified electric guitar for the entire second half of every concert now). Thank God Nobuo Uematsu's concerts still maintain their focus on the music.
@Fitz Rhapsody: Stop making shit up. Ive been to 2 VGL shows. Theres no laughter drowning out the music. Its loud as hell anyways even if people were laughing.
@NoBullet: Uh, nice try, Dr. Genius - I ALSO have been to 2 VGL shows, hoping that the second would be better than the first - and yet they somehow found a way to make it worse.
Let me be more specific: The Metal Gear music SHOULD have been one of my favorite pieces, but all I could hear was the overpowering synth-beat when the laughter drowned out the actual orchestrated part. It was awful. Maybe you could hear the orchestra if you were sitting in the 3rd row, but up in the balcony, it was inaudible.
@SmilingPolitely: Yes, I agree - perhaps my complaint is that overall, video game music is presented in a comic setting more often than not, which makes me feel patronized as someone who considers himself a "gamer" but also has a background in classical music. Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I wouldn't be able to fully appreciate a concert consisting of video game music, even if it's orchestrated. I feel like there's an assumption that gamers are too stupid or A.D.D. to appreciate classical music, and that annoys me.
I heart video game music. I often listen to soundtracks in non-gaming situations (working out, driving, working, etc.). It just affects me differently than other music does. I figure it's because it is forever connected in my brain to the games themselves, but I've fallen in love with some songs before I even played the game in which they're featured.
