Every true MMORPG needs fishing. This is a fact that cannot be disputed without me sticking my fingers in my ears and shouting, "I can't hear you , lalalala!" While Vanguard has long been fishless, now test servers have been updated with the skill, which utilizes a rather bizarre system for snagging seafaring snacks. Once a fish is caught on your lure, you have to use your arrow keys to mimic its movements. Success drains the fish's health, while failure regains it. Once the fish is defeated, you automatically reel it in. This isn't just fishing folks - it's Fish Fish Revolution. You could totally hook up a dance pad for this to make it more interesting.

Along with fishing comes various less-important improvements, like new class / race combinations, Galleons, Enchantments, and much more. Hit the link for full details on the upcoming changes.

<![CDATA[Vanguard Still Wants You Back, Won't Stop Calling]]> Sony Online Entertainment's Vanguard: The Saga of Heroes has gone through some pretty big changes over the past several months, including the introduction of new character models and an all-new starting area to take players through to level 10 called the Isle of Dawn, and they'd like you to come try it out again, if that wouldn't be too much of an imposition. Players with deactivated accounts (like me!) will be able to log into the game from now until October 18th for free, continuing their aborted adventures or starting up a new character to try out the Isle. Returning players who progress through the Isle of Dawn into the mainland and then reactivate a paying subscription will receive a free pair of Gnomish Rocket Boots (no relation) to help speed you on your way.

As I've said before, Vanguard has some very good things going for it, and my time in the game was certainly enjoyable to a point. I'd check in again if I had the time, but with the end-of-the-year gaming spectacular in full swing I won't have the time. Anyone still playing out there that can give us the down-low? Worth the reinstall, or no?

<![CDATA[Vanguard Getting A Fresh Start, New Character Models]]> A less tenacious, more sensible MMO company would have long left Vanguard exposed on the side of a mountain to languish until death, but not our friends at Sony Online Entertainment. No, big things are in store for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, starting with a brand new starting area and updated character models that could be out as early as this week. Taking a cue from Everquest 2, they'll be launching a new starting area that doubles as a trial version of the game called the Isle of Dawn. Subscribers will be able to choose from their race's starting area or the Isle, which allows players to adventure up to level 10 before moving on, or in the case of free trial players, forking out some cash.

Also included in the update will be the eagerly anticipated new character models, which promise to make the men manlier and the women not-quite-as-manly, which is always a good thing, unlike releasing an update for your floundering MMO weeks before the release of Warhammer Online, and while thousands of bug fixes sounds like a good thing, it does pretty much indicate thousands of bugs to be fixed. Hrm.

<![CDATA[Vanguard Adds Racial Mounts, Half Elves Screwed Again]]> I don't care what game you are playing, half elves are always getting the short end of the stick. Take their racial mount from Vanguard: Saga of Heroes latest update “Telon Rides On”, which introduces faction-based racial mount quests for players 30-50. What the hell is that supposed to be?

A turtle.

The dark elves are rocking a spider, the wood elves get...whatever the hell that giant bug is supposed to be, and the half elves get a damned turtle. I suppose it could have been worse. They could have only gotten half a turtle.

<![CDATA[SOE Resurrects Vanguard Accounts For The Holidays]]> Did you try Vanguard: Saga of Heroes when it launched, only to cancel your subscription once you realized what a buggy mess it was? Sony Online Entertainment wants you to give the game another chance. From now until January 3rd, SOE is reactivating Vanguard accounts that have been inactive for at least 60 days, giving old players a look at how far the game has progressed since those first, clumsy, stumbling steps. Oh come on, Vanguard wasn't that bad. I have to admit that during the end of my stint playing the game I was starting to enjoy myself. My main issue with it wasn't so much the bugs (bugs can be fixed) but the lack of people playing. I actually got into a group one time within an entire month of playing, and while I had a blast it just drove home the point of how sparse the population was. For me, MMOs are all about playing with other people, so when it came time to go over my MMO budget, Vanguard didn't make the cut. Maybe I'll pop on over the holidays to see how things are going. I hear helmets show up now!

<![CDATA[Future Of Vanguard Hazy, SOE "Getting More Involved"]]> When Sigil Games Online released Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, it wasn't due to the game being done, but more closely related to (mostly understandable) "financial issues." The MMO was a bit buggy and a tad unfinished, two things that reflected in the game's review scores.

Sigil Games Founder Brad McQuaid, who co-designed the original EverQuest, updated Vanguard players about the current state of the game and where it's headed. In short, co-publisher Sony Online Entertainment is going to be more heavily involved in Sigil and its game, but to what extent, Brad's not telling.

Following up on SOE's "discussions with Sigil regarding the future of Vanguard and Sigil Games in Carlsbad" McQuaid writes:

It means that right now Vanguard is doing decently but not as well as we hoped. If you haven't read my last long post that outlined some of the things that went wrong during development, etc., please do. So the bottom line is that SOE is going to be getting more involved with Sigil and Vanguard - our relationship is going to become even tighter - much tighter. At this point I can't say much more than that.

Brad goes into GREAT detail about the upcoming changes and how they got their in his forum post below. Invested parties and MMO armchair analysts should peruse.

A few good titles out this week including Rouge Galaxy, Mario Kart for the VC and Sony opens the curtain on it's new MMO, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. <![CDATA[Vanguard Gets Ambitious Release Date]]>

Just a week after announcing the open beta for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, SOE and Sigil have set a release date. The game will be released on January 30th across North America and Europe, with retail prices of $49.99 and $89.99 for the regular and limited editions respectively. Players who opt to preorder the game will receive beta access, a three day head start once the game goes live, and a special in-game scroll that allows players to sprint for longer periods of time.

This gives them two and a half weeks to add the final polish to the game, a process that will hopefully keeps servers from crashing every 5-10 minutes, balance the quest creature VS. player ratio, and hopefully make the game interesting enough to warrant spending a monthly fee to play it. Good luck with that.

<![CDATA[Vanguard Open Beta Begins: Impressions]]>

The open beta Sigil's Vanguard: Saga of Heroes begins today, with the beta client up on FilePlanet as we speak, though only available to subscribers and preorder folks for the first week. With the beginning of this final phase of testing the NDA has also been lifted and tongues are wagging, including my own. I've been in the closed beta for the past several weeks now, having spent more than enough time to give you some basic impressions of the game.

Vanguard is an MMO created by Brad McQuaid, one of the creators of the original Everquest, who left the company to explore possibilities. Possibilities like creating a game that plays like the missing link between EQ1 and EQ2. You get the relatively simplistic (in most cases) gameplay of the first game with graphics halfway between the two. In part I blame the overall lack of character and the generic fantasy setting for failing to keep my interest. While the variety of class and race combinations is impressive, but I am getting tired of plastic looking characters that only truly shine if I push my computer to its limits.

I wish MMO developer would focus less on the look and instead focus their energies on creating something fluid and entertaining. Even in the trailer from GameTrailers.com below you can see the framerate stuttering.

Now I do enjoy the quest system, which encourages you to explore the world, propelling you across the countryside engaged in a variety of tasks. I also like the variety between class mechanics, which is much like you find in World of Warcraft. The monk character, for instance, accrues points as he uses abilities, which can be used to unleash even more powerful ones.

In the end, I'm just a guy writing on a gaming blog, and this is just my opinion, which carries just as much weight as yours does. Try the game out for yourself, see how you like it. It isn't shaping up to be my cup of tea, but I certainly wouldn't want you to avoid something just because I didn't like it. Check the press release below for info on downloading and forming an opinion for yourself!
