@Friedhamster: I think it's simulations which require massive amounts of number crunching. Things like weather simulations could be something the airforce is interested in. They do alot of calculations in the airforce to make sure missiles hit and kill the right things.
@exion: Do your research, or keep your mouth shut, please.
It's against not only Air Force policy, but the international Law of Armed Conflict for us to bomb buildings within a certain distance to the above mentioned. They are considered "protected" under LOAC, like mosques and churches. Except when they are being used as strongpoints by the enemy- something they often do in modern combat, as a way to try and get the widest media coverage possible.
Have you heard of the countless bombings of terrorist structures, camps and strongholds with ZERO collateral damage? No, because all that is news worthy is when one bomb goes astray. The USAF has the technology to drop five, 9-ton bombs within 50 feet of each other. From altitudes close to 50,000, flying at almost, or just above, the sound barrier. Meaning not only would you not see the plane, you wouldn't even hear it until the enemy forces bearing down on yet another convoy of Iraqi soldiers trying to create a better country for their people is destroyed. Those schools and hospitals? You only hear about them because the occupants were used as literal human shields- something our enemy has no qualms about doing, despite it's own LOAC violations.
I'm not going to waste anymore time than what I have trying to convince you; I've tried with others similar in the past. The kind that protest cargo bases as baby killers, and the first ones to one from a fight and expect the men on the wall to protect them, even though they badmouth them whenever possible. Not that you're a coward or anything, but try and have a little respect for the men who volunteer to fight and die to bdefend your right to say they blow up schools for sport.
@tornbhc007: no offence to soldiers on the frontline, but as you said yourself... these planes fly close to 50,000 feet... what exactly are they risking? air sickness? give me a break.
I have nothing but contempt for war, and more than contempt for those who don't even see the people you're killing.
@exion: They fly that high to avoid surface to air missiles. And don't get me wrong, I got some contempt for a few pilots I've met, but they are still the ones out there doing things designed, in theory, to keep America safe at home.
And as a personal aside, I apologize for any unnecessary heat in my original reply. I tend to get passionate about certain things, and posted before proofreading.
@tornbhc007: oh no worries in that regard... I have respect for the people who put their life on the line to protect what they believe in, nomatter who they fight for, but many military decisions irk me.
@exion: well that is one thing, but keep in mind that shooting anything into the air, and making sure it lands near where you want it too, deadly or a medical supply drop requires calculations that factor in the effects of weather, wind resistance, various other things, all in real time.
I'm not a a fan of the army, quite far from it, but I don't think for a minute these mini supercomputers are getting wasted cpu cycles.
@High Speed Indeed: I would have only 1 request if that happened, ps3 only and tons of new maps capable of holding 1100 vs 1100 matches, lol , oh and by the way come install FIOS and CABLE to every PS3 owner who cant get it or doesnt have it lol, THEN we can talk about that....
It's really hard to surpress the "Hey, look, the PS3 is doing everything but playing games"-esque comments, but then I remember that the PS3's getting the Bad Company 2 Beta and MAG soon.
It makes me sad that Sony took out the BC that I was hoping they'd reinstall in the console because that's the only thing holding me back at this point from buying the shiny black console. Yes, I know it's my own fault for not buying a BC PS3 when they came out and could actually play PS2 games. Oh well.
Anyways, 336 PS3s should be great for filling up one and a quarter MAG games, no problem. with over 2200, you could make almost 9 full game sessions. I'm not sure what shocks me more, the fact you need that many PS3s to make 9 MAG game sessions, or that it ONLY makes 9 MAG game sessions.

@bkchurch: The one guy who didn't buy Modern Warfare 2: That sort of defeats the purpose of keeping only 3 consoles on my entertainment system then, especially since my current TV lacks a lot of connections my old one had.
I'm just pointing out that the BC issue has come and gone. If that's what's holding you back from your purchase you probably just don't care to own one in the first place. You wanna play PS2 games, play em on your PS2. I'm too busy with my PS3, 360, and my Wii to even think about firing up a PS2 game in near future personally.
@avern: Hmm. You know, you just gave me an idea. I should hit up my step brother-in-law and see if I can get ahold of his old PS3 in exchange for a brand new PS3 Slim. At least, I hope he has a PS3 Phat.
@bkchurch: Mostly I just want one because I have a copy of Disgaea I wanna play on a console instead of teenie weenie vision on a DS. And I only got 10 minutes into FF12 and I really should play the bloody thing, or give it away.
@Salen: With all do respect... there are many creative ways to own a first gen...BC PS3 these days, don't want to sound like a fanboy, but it is nothing to fuss about. Just think about all these first gen PS3 owners out there, who probably don't make any good use of there BC option and are finding any excuse to buy the newer, slicker PS3 slim..like you said you can start with your Step-bro-in-law and end with Craigslist, Kajiji or eBay.
I've traded a first gen iPhone 2G for my first gen 60Gb. BC, PS3 about 2 years ago (second hand) and now I have a 320GB HDD in their, it's chalk full of media (TV shows, movies etc.) and yes, I don't blame you, I still find the time once in a while to fire up Shadow of the Colossus, MGS3 and Tekken 5 etc. Look around for one, and you will find it, Good luck.
There's a vocal minority that continues to bitch about it. It's by and large not a lot of people.
I'm not going to lie, I do use it. Every once in a while if there's a lull in new games I'll find the time to go back and replay an old favorite or finally play an Atlus game I never had the time to get around to. But it's really infrequent. And if I didn't have BC, I'd hook my PS2 up to do it.
Buy a PS3 to play PS3 games. If you want to replay a game so bad but you can't be hassled to plug a PS2 in and be restrained a chord than you either don't care about playing that game that much or you are lazy as hell.
Moreover I would certainly not suggest buying a 60gb PS3. People may tell you the PS3 has a low failure rate but first generation PS3s with the 90nm chipset have had more than their fair share of issues. Failing lasers and overheating are not rampant but they certainly aren't uncommon in the old models. Buying second hand is only going to exacerbate the chances of running into these issues.
@bkchurch: The one guy who didn't buy Modern Warfare 2: First of all, I do have a release 60 gig. And I love it. When they removed BC and didn't change the price it was bad, now knowing that if something happens to my current one, I am doubly screwed is even worse. That is great you don't mind hooking up on old PS2...well some people do, so there we are.
Great, then why are we discussing this? The people who demand BC in their PS3s have a BC PS3. The few people who care about BS don't own a BC PS3 missed the boat. Too bad for them. It's not coming back and the point stands that whining about the lack of BC as a reason for not owning a PS3 is dumb. There's plenty of good reasons to own a PS3. Not being able to play PS2 games is a stupid reason to not buy the system.
And I stand by the belief that if you can't take five minutes to hook a PS2 up if there's a PS2 game you want to play you are lazy as hell.
Can someone explain how these consoles are utilised in this fashion? How is the processing power harnessed? What is the interface used? What makes this more practical than a regular computer?
For me it is difficult to thing of them as anything other than something you connect to your TV, turn on and play games on.
@duckmouth: linux(or a software written with the ps3 sdk)+1Gb/s Ethernet
the Cell is a very powerful PowerPC processor (PPC is good for crunshing number like matrix and stuff, actually better than games(which rely on vectoriel matrixes but not only)
it's not used a a computer per se, it's a cluster of machines more like a server, on a remote pc, you want to render or calculate something, it gets sent to the cluster, gets processed and then sent back.
(for example a pixar movie isn't obviously rendered on the 3D modeler's computer, but on dedicated servers)
@duckmouth: An operating system, usually Linux, is installed on the machines and they are set up to wait for instructions and data on the LAN. A master computer on the network takes the job that needs to be done, splits it into pieces, and sends them out to the different computers.
To use a simplified example, if the USAF was trying to break the encryption on a hard drive, the first PS3 would try all passwords starting with A, the second, B, and so on.
@jetRink: @Shin: Great, thanks guys. I have seen this kind of thing mentioned before (this and 'folding', whatever that is), never understood it. Sounds like very cool stuff.
Wouldn't this make a mess (controller-sync / bluetooth radio channels wise) to use? Or are they just going for USB-keyboards only, since they're on Linux? :P
@meowmixx: They'd be using distributed processing on a custom Linux build, which would be controlled from a single computer that probably wasn't itself a PS3. The PS3's themselves are just there to crunch numbers.
@McWarrior: Yeh, probably. It's a pity though, I could already see 20 scientists running around wondering which of the 2200 PS3's their controller was actually synced to. :)
I hope they got the memo telling them that Linux does not run on Slims. Shame if all those PS3 ended up as gaming consoles around Air Force mess halls worldwide.
@Shykin: Like has already been said, this is probably saving tax payers a lot of money. Remember how it was said that it was said that it would cost $1100 to build a computer that would do the same job as a PS3? [kotaku.com]
Wait they are getting the slim versions? Those don't have the option to install os, so how the hell are they going to be doing cluster computing? I mean the PSN doesn't have a Cluster Airforce computing tab. Airforce good luck.
@crabperson really wants Uncharted 2: ohhh I didn't get the "Influenced in no way by the release of a newer, slimmer model, the United States Air Force will soon be placing an order with Sony for 2200 PlayStation 3s."
