Living in Europe, I'd rather have a decent Video Marketplace or something than anything else right now. The US already moved on from that and have been enjoying Netflix for about a year now, the UK will get Sky pretty soon and the rest of Europe still has nothing...
Dammit Microsoft, all I want is The Sarah Connor Chronicles on my console!
If you're a Twitter fan then I can see some appeal in being able to quickly check your updates whilst you're using a console. However, a big chunk of the people I follow use Twitter to say "go check out the awesome thing at this URL!" - which is why Twitter applications on the iPhone tend to have a built-in web browser, so that you can quickly check out the URL.
However, the XBOX360 does not have a web browser. How are all those URLs handled?
I know. It's just me. But I don't get having FB and Tweets on my "escape from reality and others" gaming console...all I need now is the FBI tracking my achievement points...
@zimmi88: I'm pretty sure that was stated back when this stuff was announced. It's a value-added feature for Gold, makes it slightly more worth it.... not much more, but a bit.
@panikt: if people use Twitter and/or Facebook, this gives them a chance to show their "friends" what they're doing or what they've "accomplished" (in words or pictures) without having to turn on the computer. We're lazy folk, we demand an eject button on DVD players' remotes. We want our gaming systems to tell us which game we just put in the drives.
I bet most of us wouldn't mind having our gaming systems (TV, surround system and all) installed in the bathroom, with a fridge right next to the bowl if the bowl was more comfortable.
I hate the fact that MS are adding more functionality to my console, how dare they!
While I'm ranting, what is it with mobile phone makers adding cameras and MP3 players, to my phone! If I wanted any of that, I'd have 2 other devices in my pockets!
The way I see it: Microsoft is making use of our subscription fees to constantly update and add new experiences to an already great console.
The PSN is fine, but isn't really given these "major" updates that add more to the user experience, and the NWFC is just... not fun. I love all three of my systems, but the 360 gets a lot more support and new additions yearly than the other two networks combined.
So if you don't like this update, don't use it. It's not as if they will require a Facebook and Twitter account to get onto Live, they're just "there" if you want. They can't cater to everyone's needs and this adds a great new thing to draw in some new gamers.
To this day, I still don't have a Facebook and Twitter account. I got bored with social networking back with Myspace, and Twitter seems useless to me because I can text my friends and I'm pretty sure I'm not someone of high regard to have others view such messages.
@Atomsk88: Agreed. Twitter is pointless. I wouldn't want to post my life in a play-by-play fashion so why in the hell would I want to read other people's. I can't believe that companies have took to it. I think only teenage girls would find the technology appealing so they could twitter things like "OMG, going to the mall with my BFF for new shoes but I could not find the pair I wanted in the right color. Don't you just like hate when that happens." If I were to twitter it would probably be just about my bowel movements. I would twitter something like "OMG, went to the bathroom to take a duece but all could do was fart. Don't you just like hate when that happens."
I still don't see why these are even being included. It just adds another tab of shit I don't want to see whenever I turn on my 360. I don't want ads, I don't want avatars, I don't want Facebook, and I DEFINITELY don't want Twitter.
I just want the damn games. Why is this so hard for Microsoft to grasp?
@DunnCarnage: No it doesn't. It goes directly to the "look at all our hot new ads" tab. It's NEVER booted directly to the games tab.
@Cookie: Don't people use COMPUTERS anymore? Why do our game consoles have to be clogged up by stupid ad-supported bullshit that you're forced to see every time you turn the machine on, yet you have to PAY to use?
I still don't see why Web Browsing, Home and PSLife are included. It just adds another tab of shit I don't want to see whenever I turn on my PS3. I don't want ads, I don't want trophies, I don't want FoldingHome, and I DEFINITELY don't want Home.
I just want the damn games. Why is this so hard for Sony to grasp?
@Archaotic: It's all part of the whole "Lets bring gaming to the mainstream" thing. and to be honest they're just doing it to put bullet points on the back of the box...
Your mainstream user when looking at the box of the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be like "Ohhh Look Honey! It has that new twitter thing! and it has facebook too! Now i can bug my old college roommate more then ever!"
I think if Last.fm could be played in the background while playing games it would be much more useful.
@Black_STAR: Even if I don't have to use it, it's still clogging up the dashboard. If I could delete the applications, ads, and avatars entirely and never have to see them, I wouldn't have a problem. But Microsoft won't let you do that.
The 360 has been marketed as a media center for years now. That means movies. That means Netflix That means music. And for some people, that means Facebook and Twitter.
The easiest solution is don't use the features you don't want. Just because you don't want them doesn't mean their presence won't make other people happy.
PS3 doesn't have ads plastered all over the damn dashboard you have to tab through just to get to your games.
Neither does the 360. It loads on the Spotlight tab, you hit up on the joystick once, and boom - your games. Other than that one initial load, you're never forced to look through those ads...and honestly, I don't know anyone who does look at those. Given that the first few ads are usually for Microsoft's themed game nights or Marketplace content, I don't have too much of a problem with them, either - as long as they don't boot directly to the loud ads that auto-play videos, I can deal with it.
@spiderweb1986: If I could GET RID OF THEM, I wouldn't be complaining. Microsoft just keeps shoehorning this shit in, forcing me to look at my stupid-ass Avatar every time I turn it on, making me tab through ads to get to anything, slowing down the entire dashboard just to accommodate all these new casual features that I have no use for.
Again, they should let us turn off the ads. Why exactly are we being advertised to if we already pay for the service?
Well, it is called "Sony Computer Entertainment System". It does allow hook up of a mouse and keyboard, it has wi-fi, internet, streaming movies etc. It has been referenced as a computer.
The Xbox 360 is marketed as a media centre, it connects with that aspect of PC's and it's an extension. I hate a lot of this stuff too and agree that you should be able to remove it, but the consoles aren't consoles anymore.
@Ice-nine froze my baby: Unfortunately, it's going to be shoehorned into the system via a firmware update, so it'll be there whether you like it or not. I wouldn't be complaining if it was just some optional downloadable extra you never have to see unless you opt in.
@Archaotic: It wouldn't surprise me if this could be classed as illegal adware if someone were to bring it up in court because it is a mandatory update.
That said, who gives a flying fuck. If you use Facebook or Twitter (like the whole world), this gives you a nice bit of new functionality. If you don't, then it's a tiny ass file that really isn't going to matter to you.
Get over it.
Meh, if you are stupid enough to pay for xbox live when they are ramming ad's down your throat then you deserve it.
@Archaotic: There is this big X button on the 360 controller where you can do EVERYTHING without seeing those ads an other things that annoy you. Give it a try...its a nice feature. But if your complaint is about the other "feature" that MS adds on to the firmware, well, your on own there. live with it or cry some moAr.
@Archaotic: So was 1 vs 100, yet you are under no obligation to use that. Netflix was part of a firmware update aswell, have you been forced to buy a Netflix account aswell?
@Ice-nine froze my baby: 1 vs. 100 and Netflix didn't add entirely new tabs to the dashboard, just icons. This is more like adding yet another layer of ads for no reason.
