I'm often amazed that the flimsy paper envelope my Netflix DVDs come in offers me perfectly playable discs 90% of the time.
I did have to stop dropping them off at my apartment's mail drop though, because some ass hats were stealing all of them. Haven't had any problems now that I go directly to the post office with them.

The problem comes in with careless manual handling, in my opinion. Even if the envelope gets caught in the machine, the worst that happens is you get a torn up Netflix envelope, and the DVD is still fine.

It's also machine-sorted at extremely high speed with a series of top/bottom rollers, and any flexing this process may cause would seriously increase the chances that the discs will break. Hence why, as GameFly is claiming, other rent-by-mail services have their discs pulled out of the mix and hand-sorted to prevent this from happening.
