I don't know whether its just me, put lately I tend to be doing most of my gaming on my handhelds (I own both PSP and DS). It seems to be the only place where you can get a little variety plus its seems to be the only real place you can get any eastern developed titles.
Im not biased, its just that on consoles, it seems as though we are dominated by western produced games with less and less chance of having the eastern counterparts being published on consoles. Handhelds are the only way to get a piece of this action.
Even when eastern game are coming over, they seem to be western influenced (res5, madworld, blood and violence titles). Sure we still get some variety but its drying up faster and faster.
As nice as it is now, I dont want to see the only way I can play these games is on a handheld, 5 hour sessions on a DS/PSP means serious handcramp and eyestrain.
There have been some really good games recently lined up to be dropped onto portables that would do just as well on consoles; DQ9, DW: strikeforce (the first DW game to try something new) Monster Hunter and then theres a new Persona coming out.
Lets have this same creativity moved onto the consoles please :)

I think it has to do with 1.) the developing costs 2.) the time it takes to develop these games and 3.) the mobility of these devices.
It's undeniable that handheld gaming is starting to gain some serious ground in the gaming biz. Until this handheld gen there was (pretty much) only Nintendo and the hardware of their gameboys was limited to 2D. There wasn't much you could do with them besides gaming, either.
Now however Nintendo's got serious competition. Even though they're still leading by more than double the amount of sold units Nintendo can't allow themselves to make any major mistakes as they'd lose a big chunk of their user base then. You just can't rely on brand recognition anymore(*cough* PS3 *cough*).
They aren't just mere gaming gadgets either.
Well, the DS still is(for the most part) but the PSP isn't. It has a photoviewer,mp3/4 player, Wi-Fi and soon an app store which will offer apps that are not games. In fact, I wouldn't call these gaming handhelds anymore but rather multimedia devices.
They're getting smaller, stylisher and generally more mainstream with every iteration and I wouldn't be surprised if at some point almost everyone had one. In Japan it is already the case - and it makes sense. Japanese people are very busy people and they aren't as much at home as we are so buying a DS or PSP makes more sense for them than say a 360, Wii or PS3.
That being said, I think the future of gaming(as we know it - you know, buttons and no waggle, waggle) belongs to handhelds.

Thank you, but no thank you.
I like me some Dynasty Warriors (clones) anytime, anywhere but not this.
The release date seems kinda bad, too.
Around that time (Oct.1.) GTPSP will be released and I don't see anything but that game selling for the next thirty or so years.
But I could be wrong, of course.

Tell me when you told your soldiers in Dynasty Warriors to stand on top of each other and prepare to fall into a moat to become a bridge.

What are you talking about? I'm saying that I like Dynasty Warriors and all its clones but I don't want any Overlord-esque elements in those games. There's a reason those two have been kept separate until now.
You either are a bad ass who's capable of killing dozens of enemies at once with a single blow or you aren't.
Guan Yu doesn't need a bridge of zombies. He'll make one out of the corpses of the enemies he's slayed.

You think so? You might want to get your eyes checked then. Oh, pardon. I mean get your eye checked.

I thought that was possibly the best thing I would ever see in a video game trailer ever.
Then I saw a pair of zombies using medieval cannons as melee weapons.
My eyes imploded.
