If you haven't read it, it's good stuff, go read it. If only because Avrad gives the first details on the Uncharted movie project, which until now had only been hinted at.
When it comes to the big screen adventure, Arad said the plan is to mix things up a little bit. In the game, the action moves very quickly to the island, but the film will open things up a bit and add some depth before the island adventure.

So, more talking, more sexual tension, less gunplay. Avrad also stresses that Nathan Drake is not just another Indiana Jones clone, saying "Indiana Jones was always a good guy and he relentlessly did the right thing. Drake is a guy who's being hauled over to virtue throughout the game". The story should at least make for a half-decent popcorn flick, but wasn't the main appeal of the game the fact it already felt like a movie?

<![CDATA[ Just a quick note. We updated our post from ... ]]> Just a quick note. We updated our post from earlier, but it bears separate mentioning. The patch to unlock trophy support for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune on the PlayStation 3 is now available for all to download and enjoy, except of course those PS3 owners who never picked up the game, who are officially missing out on a damn fine game.

<![CDATA[ PAL Regions Get Uncharted Trophy Patch ]]> The promised 1.01 patch for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune has hit the decidedly charted PAL regions of the world, unlocking PlayStation 3 trophy support for one of the console's greatest titles. The patch, which weighs in at a modest 13 megs, unlocks 47 trophies that coincide with the achievements already built into the game, along with a 48th platinum trophy for unlocking all of the other trophies. Already unlocked all of the game's achievements? Well start a new game and unlock them again, as they won't be applied retroactively due to cheating concerns.

Right now the patch is only showing up in PAL territories, though we're certain a North American release can't be too far behind. AHA! Err, UPDATE: Now available in the states!

<![CDATA[ Uncharted's Trophies Numbered, Explained ]]> Want the skinny on all of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune's PlayStation Trophies? All 48 of them? I do. Mostly because I'll be quite comfortable restarting the game in order to secure them, having not yet beat Naughty Dog's PlayStation 3 adventure. Arne Meyer at Naughty Dog spills the beans on all the virtual prizes one can secure in the game, just as soon as that patch arrives. Oh, there aren't details details, more like a high level briefing.

Fortunately, it sounds like some of them are related to shooting people in the face, something I excel at in Uncharted. However, we've been hearing rumors that if you can get Nathan Drake's shirt fully tucked in, it unlocks, like, twenty nude codes. We're confirming.

<![CDATA[ Uncharted: People Killing, OK, Animal Killing, Not OK ]]> In an interview with SCEE blog Three Speech, Naughty Dog's Evan Wells has been answering a bunch of questions sent in by Three Speech "readers". Most are fairly run-of-the-mill, but one's pretty interesting, if only from a cultural standpoint. The question was, basically, why can't I shoot the fish in the game? The answer:

We had hit reactions and even some death animations for the wildlife in the game but we chose to remove it. It was flagged as a potential issue by the ESRB and it seemed like a small concession to make in order to maintain our "Teen" rating. It may have also affected the rating in Europe.
So...killing hundreds and hundreds of human beings with guns and explosives and your bare hands is totally cool, but shooting some fish in a river can jeopardise a "teen" rating? What a strange and hilarious world we live in.

According to this source - who is "close to the deal" - developers Naughty Dog have already agreed to option the rights to a movie based on their 2007 hit (and our 2007 NQGOTY), with Atlas Entertainment reported to be behind the project. Who are Atlas? They're a production company who helped put Twelve Monkeys and Three Kings together, so relax, will you?

<![CDATA[ How Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Makes Home Really, Really Cool ]]> While Resistance: Fall of Man's integration with Home should have bonus content fans excited, old school run-and-gun shooter fans should be pretty pumped about what they may be getting with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune's contribution. We hear that the Home portal for Naughty Dog's PlayStation 3 adventure will follow in Resistance's footsteps, allowing Home avatars to explore the game's levels without the threat of being shot at, a nice feature.

But it's the Uncharted mini-game that has us far more pumped.

According to our sources, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune comes to Home armed with a side-scrolling 2D arcade game, described to us as reminiscent of both Contra and Out Of This World. Sounds kind of like Capcom's 2D remake of Bionic Commando in its execution, full of enemies and exploding barrels to shoot.

Sony is apparently pitching features like these to developers to extend the lives of their titles, using strong first and second party development showcases to prove that Home can effectively market outside of traditional means. We hope they take them up on their offer, because we're definitely excited about the prospects.

This week, in between some scathing political commentary, Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw reviews Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for the PS3. Does he like it? Of course not. Can you imagine his reviews happy? We can only pray that divine intervention keeps both love and ecstasy from Yahtzee's grasp, lest we lose Zero Punctuation forever.

When I finally get home, expect me to unwind with a few rounds of Team Fortress 2, a title I've been chatting about a lot with colleagues and developers and DICE. Demos for Patapon and God of War: Chains of Olympus were stashed in the DICE schwag bag, so I'll be giving those a spin, too. Yeah, I'm late to the party. So what?

<![CDATA[ The Rocky's Second Annual Golden Crecentes ]]> game4gold.JPG

First a thing about the name: I didn't pick it. I think it's hilarious, but I'd never name an award after myself, it's obnoxious... and quite funny. Which is what I think the Rocky was going for. There are quite a few closet smart-asses over there. :)

So my annual pick for best video game ran in the Rocky Mountain News today and I picked Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as the overall winner. The game beat out The Orange Box, Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Here's why I decided to pick a war-time first-person shooter sequel over the splendor of a dystopian society, amazing character interaction of Uncharted and innovative design of Galaxy and Orange Box:

This solid first-person shooter for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 may not be as innovative as The Orange Box and Super Mario Galaxy. It may not deliver an awe-inspiring glimpse at an eschewed philosophy like BioShock or create the sort of sizzling character interaction found in Uncharted, but, hands down, it is the most thoroughly entertaining video game of the past year.

The single-player story is captivating, set in a present-day Middle East and parts of Russia and comes at the player in a mix of sweeping cinematic set pieces and smart pacing that can easily glue the audience to the game for the entire six- to eight-hour experience.

It's a game that has the sorts of moments usually found only in film, hiding these startling revelations in gamers' blind spots. People you come to care about die. You die, and not in the sort of plastic, ephemeral death found in video games. These deaths are permanent and, at times, evocative.

A deep, seemingly limitless online multiplayer experience also adds quite a bit of life to the title. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare may seem like more of the same, but this title is the realization of a rewarding franchise meeting its complete potential.

Hit the link to check out my winners for the rest of the categories, including a selection of "hot flashes" I managed to sneak into the awards. Feel free to bash me here for not choosing (your selection here) for best (your category here).

Ps. I didn't write the awards' intro, that's one of those smart-asses I was talking about.

<![CDATA[ Tim Schafer Mystified By Uncharted's Shirt Tech ]]> Double Fine Productions founder and funny man Tim Schafer isn't so much a fan of Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune as he is the next-gen thermal shirt that protagonist Nathan Drake wears throughout. The Psychonauts creator compares the PlayStation 3 title's heretofore ignored technological marvel that is a casually dirty, half-tucked shirt to "an unfinished symphony." He heaps praise upon the adventure game's clothing choices and lauds a poly-cotton top that speaks volumes about its wearer.

He writes of Drake's shirt "Jet skiing, swimming, and almost kissing—nothing can dislodge or fully tuck Drake's half-casual shirt. It is draped in a purgatory state, half in, half out, never completely free." A bold and fascinating analysis from a visionary mind that anyone who has even a passing interest in video game fashion should read. Compelling stuff.

..., it's anybody's guess. At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2.
And then, as quickly as it came, Naughty Dog disappears into the horizon.

But in the in-between, I'll be taking breaks to play Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Team Fortress 2. I may find some sit-down time to work my way through the Temple of the Ocean King in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, but a week away from my consoles has inspired a good deal of motivation to spend more time with them. I might do a bit of video card shopping and processor overclocking to better the performance of my PC, which whimpers during TF2 sessions.

(I say that, of course, with no scientific measurements, but only what I've sensed from the internet. So maybe I'm full of it). Regardless, Naughty Dog's Evan Wells is looking to embed the game even deeper within the platform, integrating it with PlayStation Home as much as they can.

<![CDATA[ Frankenreview, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3) ]]> From the beginning, Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drakes Fortune could go either way. We'd seen the Indiana Jones with guns concept before—many times—with a much more fulfilling cup size. And besides, the game's on the PS3, and we all know the difficult platform requires daily goat sacrifices just for the dev kits to load for developers. Ratchet & Clank, Heavenly Sword—anomalies!

But Uncharted ended up being pretty good after all. Hit the jump for our Frankenreview: the full story on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Well, not the full story. We're not spoiling the game or anything. Or will we...

graph%286%29.jpgIGN
Uncharted does what few titles manage — it completely immerses you in its experience. From the moment the game begins with a sweeping camera move through the waters off Panama, a rich score and the words of Sir Francis Drake etched on screen, Uncharted will have you hooked. It'll maintain that hold with its story, style and gameplay.
Picture%2057.pngGamerNode
...the characters in Uncharted are awesome. I thought Heavenly Sword was an anomaly, being a game rivaling most films in terms of voice acting and dialog, but Ratchet & Clank and now Uncharted have proven to me that it wasn't. Whether you hate the PS3 or not, you can't deny that a lot of the big titles do a great job in the voice acting and dialog department
Picture%2060.pngTotalPlaystation
For a game that is really quite front-loaded with combat, you would think it could have felt a little more satisfying. Maybe it's a byproduct of this fancy-schmancy animation system that calculates and layers multiple pre-set animations on the fly, but the bullets never seemed to smack home with enough force (excepting the way a shotgun or a desert eagle could send someone flying 10 feet, mind you)...
Picture%2061.png1UP
Almost all of the handful or so of puzzles require you to crack open old-man Drake's diary for a hit-you-over-the-head solution. Think turning statues to the four compass points or rotating some rotting engravings...
Picture%2058.pngVariety
At first blush it would be easy to compare Nathan Drake, the treasure-hunting star of Sony's new adventure videogame "Uncharted," with "Tomb Raider's" Lara Croft. But Drake leaves Lara in the dust, delivering the Indiana Jones experience better than gamers have ever seen it before...Picture%2059.pngAnybody pick it up yet?

<![CDATA[ Circuit City Game Deals ]]> Man, the game deals are just coming out of the woodwork today. CheapAssGamer informs us that Circuit City has three deals going on this week in the games department. First, Save $20 when you purchase any two Wii games $29.99 and up (Not as good as the TRU deal but it's something). Second, get a $10 gift card with the purchase of Mario Party DS (Is it just me or does the concept of a party game on the DS seem a little odd?). And last but not least, get a $10 gift card when you buy Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for the PS3.

The Uncharted deal is probably the best one of the lot, but while you're there, you might as well peruse the Wii section as well. Never know what will be lurking around in there plus there's liable to be less screaming children there than in Toys R Us.

Having had the pleasure of playing a fair amount of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune over the last couple of days I can tell you that it's quite a good time. Watching this video might lead you to believe that the whole game is shooting, but it's so much more. They seem to have taken the best bits from some great games and combined them together to create a really fun and entertaining gaming experience. Think Tomb Raider with some Gears of War thrown in, a little Prince of Persia for good measure and a storyline that will have you fondly reminiscing over Raiders of the Lost Ark. All this plus some of the best, if not the best graphics I have seen on the PS3 thus far. Make the jump to check out some of the wall scaling action.

<![CDATA[ Whining Works: Uncharted Demo Now Region-Free ]]> Good news, European and Asian PlayStation 3 owners; the region-locked demo for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is region-locked no more. Christophe Balestra, co-president of developer Naughty Dog issued an update on the game's status at the official PlayStation.blog today, begging your forgiveness for the oversight. According to Balestra, the limiting of the demo to those in North America only wasn't intentional, simply a product of being unaware that access to the PlayStation Store was a global affair.

Balestra says that when he learned of the news, he hopped in his car, carefully obeyed the speed limit on the drive back to the office and remedied the situation. Apparently, the values for hate_PAL and hate_JAPAN were both set to TRUE. Oops! It's a simple mistake.

<![CDATA[ European Uncharted Demo November 22nd ]]> I feel bad for all the Europeans who downloaded the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune demo for the PS3 only to be disappointed by the whole region lock issue, especially now that I've played the superb demo myself. I'm beginning to see why Crecente loves this game so much. Great action, natural-feeling platforming moments. It even addresses my biggest pet-peeve about games, which is getting wet. When our hero gets wet, his clothes are noticeably wet, but only to the degree the water touches him. If he crosses a stream, only the bottom of his pants get wet. It's always bothered me how games handled this, generally by ignoring the water. Man, I wanna go play it again, right now. *sighs dreamily* Oh! Right. IGN has confirmed with Sony that the Euro demo for the game will be up on November 22nd. That's just 13 days away! Of course, we'll have the full game by then, so we'll be sure to let you know how it is.

<![CDATA[ Yes, The Uncharted Demo Is Region Locked ]]> uncharted_lock.jpgIf you're in the PAL or Asian territories, you may have discovered that your 1.2 GB download of the brand new Uncharted: Drake's Fortune demo won't @!#?@!ing play on your PlayStation 3. It's not a bug, despite it's somewhat awkward behavior. It's intentional. Yes, the Uncharted demo is sadly region specific and won't play on anything but a North American PS3. It's the kind of slap in the face that hurts so much worse after a 1200 MB wait in line.

We contacted Sony Computer Entertainment America who confirmed that the US version "does not allow for cross-region play" and that "the Japanese and PAL demo will both be released soon, but we don't have confirmed release dates." Unfortunately, the delay in the non-North American enjoyment of the Naughty Dog adventure can simply be chalked up to Uncharted's release date in its respective territories. Cold comfort, I know.

UPDATE: The official PlayStation.blog has a comment from Uncharted producer Sam Thompson who writes that "we have shared your frustration with the Naughty Dog team and we are going to see what we can do. I will be back tomorrow with an update, but in the meantime I hope you can be patient and bear with us." He adds that "I hope to have good news for you soon."

It's joined by 2K Sports' College Hoops 2K8 which weighs in at 579 MB. On the downloadable content front, the pair of Guitar Hero III packs featuring The Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver have arrived for PlayStation 3 owners, each at a price-matching $6.25. As mentioned earlier, the MotorStorm Devil's Weekend add-on is now ready for purchase at $5.99.

More free stuff has been uploaded with the release of Themes for the PS3. Sony has added the Pixels, Nature and Classy Pink themes to help spruce up your XMB. But wait, there's more.

Trailers for the aforementioned MotorStorm Devil's Weekend add-on, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw join a pair of new Burnout Paradise clips for this week's game videos. Spots for One Missed Call, Sweeney Todd and the Blu-ray release of Hostel Part II account for this week's Hollywood stuff. PlayStation 3 owners who watch these latest trailers will notice the new "Play" button which will let you watch the videos as they're downloaded to your hard drive. This will be a great feature once the PlayStation Network reaches acceptable speeds!

A handful of wallpapers for Call of Duty 4 bring up the rear.

Sorry, no threepeat for SCEA as this week does not add a new PSone game to the PlayStation Store. Are you really still reading this? Why aren't you actively downloading the Uncharted demo? Seriously, reevaluate your priorities.

<![CDATA[ Uncharted's Non-Pirate ARG ]]> And by non-pirate I mean it's chock full of pirates, but completely free of their colorful sound-offs. Instead this ARG is all about alternate reality gaming—that is, to say, a fancy ad campaign.

If you head over to Sullivan's Stories you will find the ramblings of one of the upcoming PlayStation 3 game's main characters and, more importantly, a link to a Craigslist post showing an old Spanish map.

That's all I know for now, other than the fact that this is supposed to be—supposed to be—one of the hardest ARGs to come down the pipe to date. I just hope there's some sort of pay off at the end. So get to cracking and feel free to use the comments here to discuss your progress... or lack thereof.

<![CDATA[ Uncharted Demo Due Next Week ]]> An update on Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was tucked away in the comments on the official US PlayStation blog, one that reveals info on the game's demo. According to director Amy Hennig, the playable demo for Uncharted will be released on the PlayStation Network next Thursday, November 8 for North American PlayStation 3 owners. Obviously, this is subject to change and a subject to get extremely excited about.

<![CDATA[ Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Jetski Battle ]]> I've had mixed experiences with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune at Leipzig and Tokyo. While the game is gorgeous and the premise is classic, I'm not entirely sold on it quite yet. I had difficulty with the control scheme at times, and when all the enemies look exactly the same in a game that, as I said, is gorgeous, that collision with the reality of console limitations can pull you out of the experience far more than a jaggie here or there.

But it's impossible to see a clip of Uncharted without getting a little excited, even if blowing up barrels slows the action more than we'd like.

<![CDATA[ Uncharted Sets Course For November ]]> The hunt for El Dorado, the lost city of gold, begins this November as Sony officially confirms that PS3 exclusive Uncharted: Drake's Fortune with be hitting the US on the 20th of that month. According to GameStop's website, his puts it either on the same day or within a day of heavy hitting titles like Haze, Rock Band, Mass Effect, and History Channel: Battle for the Pacific, the latter of which deals with similar island themes, only likely in more realistic and therefor boring fashion. I know I have said it before, but this holiday gaming season is going to see me living penniless in the streets by January.

<![CDATA[ Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Hands-On Impressions ]]> Following the Sony E3 2007 press conference, attendees were given an opportunity to play dozens of PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP games. The first I gravitated toward was Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The third person action adventure featuring Nathan Drake and his lovely assistant searching what was assumed to be an uninhabited island smacks of Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider and cliffhanger-driven serials. It also borrows heavily (read: wisely) from games like Gears of War, Resistance: Fall of Man and unsurprisingly Tomb Raider Legend, looking to action genre champs for much of its finely tuned gameplay.

In addition to allusions to Gears' brand of "pop and stop" shooting, Uncharted features plenty of platforming. Rock climbing, jumping, rope swinging—much of it controls very well. Occasionally, some ledge traversing feels off or unpolished, but its more likely a product of the game's more organic level design. You won't see block by block levels a la Tomb Raider.

In fact, some levels are so realistic in their design, you might find yourself looking for your next destination with the game's look button (R2). I found myself missing some of the game's hints, such as gates or more heavily lit portions of the map and relying on the helpful look button.

The game has virtually no HUD, relying on other cues, some context sensitive, to replace a traditional HUD. When you take damage, you'll see the screen become desaturated. Despite the protagonist's real world nature, he can magically recover from bullet wounds simply by resting and recharging his imaginary, invisible shields, a la Halo. The only on-screen clutter you'll normally see is your ammunition supply. It's very clean and lends itself to a more cinematic approach.

The action controls well, along with some unique uses of the SIXAXIS. As you may have seen, traversing things like fallen logs will require some balance, aided by the PS3 controller. Throwing grenades, for instance, requires one to aim the weapons throwing arc by tilting the SIXAXIS forward or backward. Some camera issues aside, it works rather well.

At this point, the game feels like a solid blend of action, platforming and puzzle solving. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is very easy on the eyes and may wind up being a graphical showcase for the system. A few minor quibbles about camera control aside, it looks like the game is shaping up to be very solid when it's released for the PS3 this November.

<![CDATA[ Game Head Gets Naughty ]]> If you're psyched about Naughty Dog's upcoming fun-to-play shooter, Uncharted Drake's Fortune, then you better catch tonight's Game Head, which will be hosted at the developer's studio and focus on the game itself. I'm also told that the Call of Duty 4 E3 trailer will get an airing (which is an absolute must see) and a preview of the new, bloodier Turok. Finally, they will be airing in-game footage of The Bourne Conspiracy.

<![CDATA[ Uncharted: No Multiplayer, But No Crate Puzzles ]]> Sometimes you have to take the bad with the good. While Naughty Dog's upcoming adventure game won't feature a multiplayer component—sticking strictly story-driven single player—it will also leave one other feature on the cutting room floor—Crate Puzzles. While Uncharted: Drake's Fortune appears to be loaded with it's clichéd cousin Exploding Barrels, you'll have to look elsewhere for block-pushing "fun."

Kikizo spoke with Naughty Dog design lead Richard Lemarchand in an effort to squeeze out more details on the PLAYSTATION 3 exclusive, including talk about SIXAXIS support, trophies for Home and the typical PS3 developer Cell lovefest. Oh, nice new screens, too!

This is looking a lot like some of that "promise" I paid for. "TBA Date" can't come soon enough.

<![CDATA[ PlayStation Store Update: Joust, Uncharted, MLB The Show ]]> Today's update to the PlayStation Store? It's better than nothing! As promised by Sony Online Entertainment, Joust makes an appearance in the Downloadable Games section. Additionally seven new trailers are ready to download. Yeah! Seven! It's a regular media blitz!

Of course, the down side is that five of those are for Sony's own MLB 07: The Show. The other two are for the stunning Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and SOE's port of Championship Sprint, which I can only assume indicates a May 31 release of the arcade racer.

Now, for the Weekly Bitching Update. There are new trailers for Folklore, LittleBigPlanet, Heavenly Sword, Lair and SOCOM Confrontation from Gamers Day that we PLAYSTATION 3 owners would just love to see on the Store, yet they're still not up. They should be. Maybe I'm just bitter about not getting into the Warhawk beta.

<![CDATA[ Yup, Joust For PlayStation Store Tomorrow ]]> The PlayStation Store will receive at least one downloadable game for tomorrow's update, Sony Online Entertainment's port of the Midway classic Joust. $4.99 is the price you'll pay for nostalgia, lo-fi graphics and online multiplayer. It may not be the most exciting update, but hopefully the PLAYSTATION 3 1.80 firmware will keep owners busy testing the new upscaling abilities of their console.

I've also heard rumors that at least one upcoming PS3 title shown at the recent Sony Gamers Day will get the high definition trailer treatment. Since it's currently unconfirmed and I'd hate to be wrong here, I'll just give you a hint. The game rhymes with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Any guesses?

<![CDATA[ PlayStation Store Update: Rampage ]]> If the recent overload of PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP announcements from Sony's Gamers Day has PlayStation fans floating on air, today's PlayStation Store update will bring them right back down to earth. While a flood of new media has been pouring from SCEA this week, you'll find absolutely none of it on the Store today. Want a hi-def video of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune? You won't get it. Pain? SOCOM? Bowling? No, no, and no.

Instead, you'll find Sony Online Entertainment's hi-def port of Midway's Rampage World Tour (five bucks), and a trailer for the arcade classic Joust. That's it.

Hey, Sony, we'd love to see some of this stuff show up on the Store. Really. Can you make that happen?

<![CDATA[ More Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Shots ]]> A few new (but in reality, five months old) screenshots of Naughty Dog's upcoming PLAYSTATION 3 game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune have surfaced on the internet. They offer little more than another look at the game's lush environments and spectacular lighting and texture work but should whet the appetites of PS3 owners everywhere.
