Sony Nixes Plans For UMD Conversion Program For PSPGo |

That said, I still don't see why Sony didn't just go download-only with a PSP2, unless the PSP Go is meant simply to "soften the blow" with retailers.
If being boycotted by EB Games and some obscure Dutch retailer is the worst that happens, that's a pretty good opening salvo in the digital download vs retail battle.

Don't get me wrong, I don't see any point in 'upgrading' to a Go if it means abandoning my existing library of games for very little tangible benefit, I'm just agreeing that it was a stupid idea in the first place.

Just sayin'

I'm still on a phat and envying some of the homebrew features slims can do (multitasking in IRShell is very want) and I'm definitely curious if the Go can pull off any more impressive stunts.

Most current PSP owners I know, myself included, will not be abandoning theit UMD collections for this next iteration of the PSP.
I really believe the PSPGo should have been the actual successor to the PSP, ie the PSP 2. Dual analog nubs and true PS2 level graphics (higher texture depth, more polygons, bump mapping, self shadowing, etc).

Well hopefully we'll be reaching the end of this handheld generation soonish. The DS and PSP can't have much more than two years left.
Though I really hope we get true successors unlike this incremental hardware upgrade Nintendo is trying to pull with the DSi. Beyond the app store though it remains to be seen if the Go is going to try the same thing or not.
I'm referring to the DSi only games we'll be seeing at some point fyi.

I could see there being less objection if they could get rid of peoples UMD's when they got the digital copy. The biggest problem is getting the UMD's out of existing customers hands before giving them their digital copy.
The best way would be some sort of kiosk in a games retailer but I can't see them being happy about that in the slightest.
"Hey can we put a machine in your store that'll delete games people bring in and give them new digital copies? Oh also we're cutting you out of games sales for this console too, that's okay right?"
Yeeeeah can't see that going well.
The most practical solution would be something in Sonys own stores combined with a mail-in program. But that has it's own set of problems.
Thing is developers are likely to benefit most from the Go as it cuts their most hated enemy (retailers and the used game market) out of the process entirely.

I had a PSP at launch but gave it to my brother when his gameboy colour broke on his crazy travels.
I never got back into the world of PSP, but I do rather fancy this.

Really? If you were finally buying a game system, which would you choose? The one that can play games in category A, or the one that can play games in category A and B?

Nice job Sony.

It's too bad Sony can't work it all out yet/ever. If they had branded it as the Playstation Go or anything separate from the PSP, they would have dodged a whole lot of flak ...

1) The battery life is the same. It will actually last longer since you are no longer spinning a disc!
2) I can understand this since you can't replace the battery in an iPod either. Not to mention it was previously used as a way to hack the older PSP.
3)And FYI there are currently 74 UMD legacy titles available on the PS store. That's more than you can even find at most retailers. Plus the 50+ PSOne classics!!
4) Have you seen one? I actually saw it and compared it to my 3000. It's a very small difference since they measure the screen corner to corner like a TV. It looks visually crisper, too.
I will be getting one but I have a large exisiting library. Honestly though I am not planning on trading in my old PSP. I could however trade in the games I never play for PS Network cards.
Oh, and it does have two things the current PSP doesn't...a pause feature that saves your progress exactly where you are so you can resume from there (and I guess there are no plans to put it on the other PSP's) and bluetooth:)
If you don't want to buy it that's cool but since I have an iPod already I am more used to downloading without physically owning every song I have on it. Plus, if you delete something you can redownload it again on the PS store.
Yes, I wish I could get all my titles again digitally but I could see how it might be hard to figure out a way to accomplish this without people trying to fraud the system.
I'm getting one!!

You seem to be trying really hard to justify your purchase. :P What, you trying desperately to prove to world the PSP Go ISN'T more money for less features?
I kid, I really like the design too, I don't have a 3000 yet though, and there are HUNDREDS of games that do not exist on PSN. Really the lack of support for UMD owners is a legitamate complaint, and I'm going to just bypass the trouble and buy a normal PSP, unless Sony comes up with something good.
But hey, if Sony comes through, I really DO like the PSP Go, I just hate the lack of features.
Until then, I'm buying a used PSP, just out of spite. XD

If only that were the biggest problem...

pspUMD is still a good option, so I really don't think it's necessary to wait that long to enjoy it...if you don't already have one, that is-

I think this is more of a test than anything. They'll make some, maybe make a little money, and then when the PSP 2 comes out, they will have the kind of experience and infrastructure needed to really do well. Like a mirrored success of the original Xbox's online functions.
Having said that, I was really hoping they would figure this out, because I really WANT one, but it just doesn't make sense for me until it gets price-dropped to $200. That 16gbs of space was looking nice considering that I use my psp 2000 as an MP3 player (and even with my massive Best Buy discount on cards, the 16 is still pretty expensive), and everyone seems to forget the fact that this is more portable, which is great. There is no way for me to carry my current psp around with me without feeling like a tool.
09/25/09
Also yeah 16GB is still pricey and you know what they can make the Go seem more affordable if they raise the price of the Memory stick pro duo further since the Go uses a different add-on Memory card to the regular PSP.
I think those in Europe who have a friend with a PSP still would find this cheaper as three free games plus what it is, is definitely worth the £199 that I've seen it going for.
The thing is, retailers are just trying to protect themselves because if things go digital which honestly it does seem like it will, they are going to lose out on a lot.
If current reports are any indication, you can see a lot of retailers are now making profits from used-game sales and that's what's keeping their losses down. Take that away and it's killing them. It's only a matter of time before that happens though. I think more digital games need to be sold online though before the PSN or Live start putting full digital games at discount prices. Till then we'll see 2 year old games at high prices still.

Ah well, at least when the PSPGo crashes and burns, we can at least work on a system where digital and physical purchases can co-exist, instead of one trying to overrun the other.
