Alright, alright, so maybe Heavenly Sword will be a nearly three-year-old PlayStation 3 game by the time this Nariko action figure ships next July. But maybe Sony and Twisted Metal co-creator David Jaffe will have a new Twisted Metal game readied for the PS3 around the same time. Then the release of a new Sweet Tooth action figure will make a lot more sense.

Details on the figures are still scant, but solicitations from DC Direct put them on course for landing at toy store shelves on July 28, 2010.

<![CDATA[David Jaffe: "We're Not Showing Anything At E3"]]> David Jaffe of developer Eat Sleep Play talks about the chances of him showing something at E3. And they are?

Jaffe, best known for creating hack-and-slash God of War and vehicular-combat Twisted Metal, said that he will be there on the show floor, but the project he is working on doesn't seem as though it will be.

"I'll say it right now, because some people are speculating: we're absolutely not going to be at E3," Jaffe said in his video update. "I will be there... but we're not showing anything."

That's this year, so what about next year? "Next year, I fully expect us to be on the show floor," Jaffe added. "Part of me would love to announce at E3, so you walk into the Sony booth and bam, there's our game."

After Jaffe posted a snap of an email, speculation is swirling that Eat Sleep Play is working on a PS3 version of Twisted Metal.

<![CDATA[Rumor: Jaffe Tease Means Twisted Metal at E3?]]> David Jaffe's already said Twisted Metal is coming to PS3. And sure, lots of games involve cars and humans. But a sloppily posted screenshot of an email may tease the game's unveiling at E3.

This week on his blog, David Jaffe - the series' co-creator - posted a screenshot that seemed to discuss the development of a game involving vehicles. It lists some things Jaffe "would like to see ... [by?] the milestone," which some have taken to mean a deadline before E3 so the title can be unveiled there.

Jaffe apparently thought blurring out some of the blocks of text was enough - until a guy went in with Photoshop and did a superduper CSI enhancement that partially revealed the words. So he went back and posted the pic with the words blotted out in solid red, and finally just removed the damn thing altogether.

You can see in the pic (via Joystiq) that he talks about animations involving a guy getting dragged behind and thrown from a car. Jaffe exhorts his team to give the game more personality. "Right now it's so dry, it needs to feel [like an?] action movie."

Maybe they're working on cinematics for a Twisted Metal announcement down in L.A. I've tried contacting him but, of course, if he ripped this sucker down after everyone started picking it apart, doubtful he'll comment.

<![CDATA[Twisted Metal Arcade Game Was Once Planned]]> Buried within the latest blog update from God of War and Twisted Metal producer David Jaffe is mention that at one point, someone, somewhere thought a Twisted Metal arcade game was a good idea and that there were hazy plans for Midway and Sony to collaborate on such a product. While that obviously never bore fruit — and more than likely never, ever will — to know that vehicular combat could have come to a Midway arcade cabinet is morbidly fascinating.

Jaffe writes that he met with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon way back in the mid-nineties to discuss such a venture, but that "nothing - clearly - ever came of it."

Of course, this was when arcades were still viable and Twisted Metal was but a fledgling series. They were also the heady days of Cruis'n World and War Gods, two indicators that it was probably best for all involved that Twisted Metal Arcade never saw the light of day.

Still, we'd love to have a peek into the alternate universe where it did. If only for the laughs!

<![CDATA[Kratos Was Originally Dominus, Twisted Metal Originally More Awesome]]> Nestled gently at the bottom of one of his most recent blog posts, David Jaffe has spoken a little on a topic that I've always found interesting as hell: the previous/working titles of some of his games. Something about how a different name can alter your entire perception of a title...anyways. Some of them are really interesting! Like the fact one of God of War's possible names was Ω. Just the symbol. And the fact Kratos was for a long time going to be called the much-cheesier (especially with ham and pineapple) Dominus. And that one of Twisted Metal's original names was the brilliantly evocative Cars and Rockets, which Jaffe said "nobody else" liked. Nobody? Oh Sony.

Why the do we even try? [Jaffe's Blog]

<![CDATA[David Jaffe Re-Invisions Mario, Is Going Bald]]> Kotaku guest editor and Game Trailers faceman Geoff Keighley talks to David Jaffe about important things like overestimating the audience for small games, the possibility of Twisted Metal for the PS3 and hair loss. There's also a hundred dollar bet whether Ken Kutaragi knows who David Jaffe is. So exciting! Hit the jump for part 2, where Jaffe talks about how he'd do a Mario game. (Hint: DRUGS.)

<![CDATA[Jaffe: PS3 Twisted Metal Next Project]]>

When David Jaffe released Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted Edition he promised that there was a hidden message in the game that would reveal the next project for Jaffe's Eat Sleep Play development studio.

Well it may have been "hidden really, really, really well" but you know how hardcore fans can be. A group over at Gamefaq managed to decipher the message in record time, discovering that it reads: METAL IS COMING ON PSTHREE.

I contacted Jaffe, who's hanging at DICE this week, to see if the gamers were on the money and he confirmed they were, adding his chagrin at how fast the code was discovered and cracked. Unfortunately, he hit me with a big fat no comment when I asked him if the upcoming PS3 version of Metal was going to be hitting the console via a disc or as a downloadable.

"As for how it gets distributed, no comment :)"

<![CDATA[A Duo Of Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted Edition Clips]]> While we weren't so excited about Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted (Extra Long Name) Edition for PS2 when it was announced—despite our love for the series, we'd played the game once before—we can't help but to get a little excited when watching clips of the new version in motion. They makes us wonder why we ever put down the PSP version in the first place, a game that was closer to the heart of the fanboy-acclaimed Twisted Metal 2 than any other in the franchise. Enjoy this look at Moscow and a peak at Egypt after the jump.

<![CDATA[Jaffe: Here's My Goddamn Wii Controller, Bitches]]> The man behind vehicular shooter Twisted Metal, David Jaffe, recently fired back with with a nigh perfect response to Shigeru Miyamoto's question "Why would you make that? Why would you put a gun on a car?" His interview with Wired's Game|Life, well, it got the internet—alright, a handful of commenters and message board pitchfork wielders—into a bit of a tizzy. But the man loves Nintendo. Maybe not on teething with a GameCube controller levels, but just because he's got a suitable response doesn't mean he's not a fan.

Jaffe, today, urges calm to the throngs of upset Nintendo and Miyamoto fans who feel slightly sore down there. "It's a joke. It was funny," he says in his new video blog, just before whipping out his personal Wii remote, "I thought it was somewhat funny." Oh, David, it was. Can't we all just relax and enjoy Mr. Jaffe's ability to question the logic of banana-peel firing go karts?

<![CDATA[Jaffe Says Clues To Next Game Hidden In Twisted Metal Remake]]> Desperate for even the slightest taste of what David Jaffe and the team at Eat Sleep Play have planned for their next title? You might want to take a look—a hard look—at their first, Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted Edition. Jaffe tells GamePro that the follow-up is "absolutely revealed" in the forthcoming PlayStation 2 port, but that details are "hidden really, really, really well." Whatever it is, it's not necessarily a new Twisted Metal title.

Given that Jaffe claims the clues are "so well hidden" and "really cryptic", we estimate it will take a good 45 minutes after the game hits store shelves for details to pop up on the internet. 50 minutes, tops.

<![CDATA[Jaffe Shows Off Twisted Metal: Head On For PS2]]> David Jaffe's current independent venture, Eat Sleep Play, is already hard at work on its first project for Sony, an upgraded port of the PSP vehicular shooter Twisted Metal: Head On. Not content with the single colon in the original, the ESP team has added a second, bringing us the tongue twister title Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition. Jaffe gives us an early look at the game on the official PlayStation blog, showing off screen shots and a new trailer, the latter featuring a good hard look at Jaffe himself.

While the PlayStation 2 game may rival Tom Clancy and Square-Enix products with its extra long name, Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition looks like it will satisfy followers of the series with its copious bonus features and fan service.

<![CDATA[New Twisted Metal is Extra Heavy]]> It looks like Eat Sleep Play's new Twisted Metal: Head-On PS2 title will be more than just a PSP title with better graphics. It will be a PSP title with better graphics and plenty of extras (on top of the documentary that's been announced). From Jaffe himself:

...it seems like we're gonna get some great fan videos coming in, so that- along with tons of old concept art, toys, video, and other behind the scenes stuff we've uncovered- should make for a good package! I'm jazzed!
I'm jazzed too, Jaffe. I'm jazzed too.

<![CDATA[Jaffe Promises "Big" Announcement For Friday]]> Current Sony Computer Entertainment America employee David Jaffe is going to spill an unspecified amount of beans on us this coming Friday, exactly at 9 AM PDT, on his latest... something. The Calling All Cars and God of War producer has been dropping hints about his next project for the past few weeks, posting photos of deserted offices and hinting at the signing of contracts that require large amounts of THC to properly celebrate.

If Jaffe hadn't specifically written that "the game a lot of you guys seems to think we are working on, we are not"—probably in reference to God of War 3 or Twisted Metal rumors—I'd have guessed he has something he and his crew had something up their sleeves to satisfy our car combat sweet tooth. But since David is only promising to talk about one of the games with which he's involved, I expect many disappointed fanboys.

However, Jaffe says the announcement represents a "very, very big change in my work life" which I can only assume to mean one thing. He's pregnant.

<![CDATA[A Twisted Metal PS3 Teaser Ad? Probably Not]]> This PLAYSTATION 3 ad created by global advertising agency TBWA's Paris-based office, as you can see, features a mushroom cloud explosion in the form of a clown head. Obviously, one of the first things that came to mind was that it was a teaser promotion or early announcement for a PS3 sequel in the Twisted Metal series.

While former Twisted Metal producer David Jaffe recently made mention of something Twisted Metal related coming down the pike, I have my doubts that this is how the company would choose to announce it. Furthermore, the resemblance between the above clown and mascot Sweet Tooth isn't exactly striking.

Given Sony's history of creative and often offbeat marketing tactics, my assumption is that the ad is little more than a visual gag that makes the general viewer feel a bit clever when discovering the hidden imagery.

I guess we'll see. I don't expect Sony will squander one of its more popular IPs for the lifecycle of the PS3, but we'll hold tight for a formal announcement before getting our hopes up.

<![CDATA[Jaffe Reveals Twisted Metal Doc For Mystery Project]]> David Jaffe revealed on his personal blog today that he'll be taking part in a Twisted Metal "documentary/round table discussion" which will be filmed as part of an unannounced project. Jaffe is soliciting questions and discussion topics from fans of the car combat series on his blog, opening the comments to the Twisted Metal faithful.

With that little amount of information, this project could be anything, from a Twisted Metal collection to a PlayStation Network release to bonus materials for PLAYSTATION 3 sequel. Watch this space for more!
