you know what sucks? ive stayed away from these, but did update my homebrew browser and the dumb new version makes half the apps not work, including the FTP and a bunch of other fun shit. now i gotta borrow the roomate's laptop (christ i need an SD card reader) and downgrade it or something. why bring in a new version that requires me replacing my ELFs with DOLs? ugh.
anyway, here's to strongbad, and playing Mother 3 on the wii's GBA emulator!
@TheIrishNinja: Because there is some kind of bad formatting with most of the ELFs or something, so the HBC is protecting you. You can easily convert the files with this.
As to the piracy thing, it does suck. Some pirates hacked something someone that does not support piracy made and had the gall to edit its readme file to make it sound like the original author supported piracy. Homebrew is not piracy. There's a port of Quake, a port of Doom, an excellent Mahjongg game, ways to get around the extreme overuse of save file copy "protection" on the Wii, etc.
Nintendo really must have a control freak thing going on. I suspect it isn't even legal for them to put that bit in the EULA about downloading stuff without your consent. Could you imagine how horrible it would be if these control freaks had any sway with governments? You could say goodbye to any freedom with your own computers. I guess the sad overuse of "copy protection" in combination with a moronic save file system was only the tip of the iceberg. Seriously, you can't even choose for your games to use the SD memory by default. That's just bad design. I love Nintendo, but boy is the company bone headed sometimes.
I haven't played my wii for a while, but that's because I'm at school at wii less.
Stop complaining about Nintendo. They are trying to protect their profits and IP. Why do people play emulators? Either to play new games for free (piracy) or to play games not released in years and on outdated systems (still piracy, but understandable)
Nintendo gave people a legal outlet for their craving for old games with the VC. There are ALOT of classic games on there (I'm waiting for Earthbound, but that's another story) along with Super Mario RPG, Several LoZ, Metroid, etc. All classic games.
Yes, Nintendo is coming out with alot of "Casual" stuff right now, but keep in mind that Twilight Princess, Galaxy, and others came out soon after it's release. Brawl drove away some mid year blues. We have another Zelda coming our way, and Punch Out is coming too. Punch out, I believe, has been requested for a while.
In other words, Nintendo is trying to keep their gamers who want to play old games legally while increasing revenue with Wii ware, VC, and Casual games for upcoming bigger titles. Just because they aren't giving you a shooter every 2 weeks doesn't mean they don't have anything in their back pocket.
Nintendo is a good gaming company. SEVERAL times they have caused paradigm shifts in entertainment (does anyone remember the fact Mario 64 was the first 3-D game?) and they are trying to service the core gamer with the VC titles. Homebrew's emulation just ruins the good will Nintendo tries to gather with the gamers by legally releasing their old titles.
@madammina: Stop complaining about Nintendo. They are trying to protect their profits and IP. Why do people play emulators? Either to play new games for free (piracy) or to play games not released in years and on outdated systems (still piracy, but understandable)
Except their last update before this one actually couldn't possibly help to have done that, as it blocked homebrew use. But at the same time, if you didn't update (to keep your homebrew), it blocked access to the shop channel. So if you wanted your homebrew, you could no longer give them your money to play WiiWare and VC stuff. This meant you either then have to lose all your homebrew just so you can give them your money, or you can keep your homebrew, keep your money, and still play the games through piracy. Seems like that wouldn't really be conducive to getting people to buy stuff instead of pirate.
@madammina: wait, uh...decent rant, but Mario64 so wasnt the first 3D game. it wasnt even the first good one! but, yeah, it was an amazing game, anyway.
Smooth move ex lax. Mario 64 the first 3D game? Try Battle Zone and you might at least be closer to the right decade.
Brawl only arrived what, a year and a half after the initial statement? It was supposed to be a launch title. Then it became "Soon after the release". Then it was next December. Then it was the following February... what was it, March before it finally released? Now there was a ball dropped.
And in the end it didn't quite live up to the anticipation.
@NinjaMarion: Not everyone uses Homebrew. Some people would prefer to do stuff legally. And if you do stuff legally, then you don't have to worry about this kind of stuff.
what penalties are there for not taking this upgrade? does anyone know for sure? I don't even use homebrew but don't want to swallow this poison pill if I don't have to for some god-only-knows reason....
There are not enough hours in the day for me to play all of the games that have come out in the past month, and I see the same thing happening in the next month. How many of them are for Wii? One, and that is emulated Chrono Trigger, played through homebrew, which will be long forgotten once the DS version comes out next week.
I've played three, count 'em three Wii games, all first party games, mostly because I'm in the camp that believes games should be...oh I don't know...FUN? Oh, and deeper then an average puddle. Flash game ports are not deep, wont be deep, but will sadly keep selling millions driving down incentive to make a game that takes effort :( Why can't my Wii compete with my PS3's robust download library or my 360's AAA action game lineup?!
I haven't played my wii since July I believe, and haven't downloaded an update since... I don't know when. Is it supposed to force it on you? Never done so with me.
I definitely think not enough people comment about not playing the Wii. I think we should make it mandatory, any story on Kotaku about the wii, everyone should make it a point to mention they don't play it. Bonus points for using the word "dust".
i havent updated since before the freeloader was blocked. i cant get into the shopping channel anymore cause it tells me to update first. i think im happier with my imports than wii ware titles.
(except for homestarrunner. i guess i'll have to get that on PC)
@Beximus: Same here, in the end they're losing money by blocking these, I still bought the games, just the foreign versions 6 months earlier than they come out here.
@Ueziel: Actually, the last update was them turning away people that would want to pay them. The last update a couple weeks ago, what did it do? It made the shop channel no longer work unless you updated (which killed various aspects of homebrew, although it was reversible).
If you're just a pirate, what do you need the shop channel for? Why would you need that when you can just download the wads for free?
On the other hand, if you use your Wii for legitimate homebrew, you actually may have use for the shop channel to buy things like the Strongbad game to play legally. But then with that update, it stops all sorts of homebrew. So even though you weren't pirating games, you can no longer use the Wii shop channel to legally purchase VC and WiiWare titles. But if you update so you can buy them, you'll lose your precious homebrew.
This leaves you having to make the choice of A: Giving Nintendo your money and buying stuff from the shop channel, but no longer being able to use homebrew. Or B: Keeping your money and just downloading wads of the stuff they no longer want to let you buy from them and get to keep your homebrew. Tough choice after the actions they've taken lately...
You are running unsigned code (and breaking lots of protections to do it) just like the pirates.
When the method for the thing you do is the same as a method for something criminal don't be shocked when you get caught in raids.
People who drive around in cars giving out condoms and medicine to junkies and hookers get mistaken for Jons all the time too.
Oh as an aside there is one homebrew that's straight up bullshit, ocarina. That cheat code program is ruining mario kart and smash bros online matches (kart is so fucked up now that I stopped playing).
@yomachaser: The level of idiocy in any of your posts regarding homebrew never ceases to amaze me.
As for this update, I've always been strictly a homebrew user.....but if Nintendo thinks they can just waltz into my Wii and start deleting shit......well let's just say that if they're going to hold me down and put an eyepatch on me, I'm gonna wear it.
@yomachaser: Oh, perhaps because you troll every article that mentions homebrew with your half-truths, wishful thinking, flawed logic, and creative moralizing.
"You are running unsigned code (and breaking lots of protections to do it) just like the pirates. Seriously, WTF??
Let's not forget all the verbal diarrhea you spouted here:
It massively increases SD card write speed. The increase is something like 40 times faster than it was so games that took 20 minutes to copy to SD takes 30 seconds or less.
Sadly, not good enough for me to delete the ability to play BATTLETOADS (which I beat the other day without using a single continue/a single warp :-D).
@Lezard: No they aren't but I am in the same boat. I haven't touched it in months. There are some good games on it but nothing that demands your immediate attention.
ashame really. I think I've missed two Wii updates already. My DS gets more playtime.
@QuietStorm: I think it's a matter of personal taste. I'd put No More Heroes on that list in place of Paper Mario, for example. Lostwinds was pretty fun, too.
I'll admit the Wii is having a serious dry spell this holiday season, but as an owner of both a Wii and PS3, there are a handful of games for both consoles I really enjoy.
What's funny is, PS3 has more games that sound interesting to me until I actually play them, and get bored pretty quickly. Most Wii games that sound interesting to me I end up falling in love with. That's the biggest difference I can think of.
