According to the report:

The first thing I wanted to know was, is there a Tron video game in the works? Because so far, I haven't heard anything.

Steven did confirm that yes, there IS a video game in the works by Disney Interactive. He said he wasn't sure if he should mention it or not, but he's confirming it anyway.

Lisberger, who was interviewed at yesterday's D23 Expo, had no further details as far as consoles, the type of game, or its release window.

I've emailed PR contacts for Disney Interactive Studios to see if they want to clarify, refute or confirm Lisberger's comment.

Confirmed! There Will Be A Tron: Legacy Video Game! [The Latino Review, thanks william b.]

<![CDATA[A Visit To Flynn's Arcade, The Home of Tron]]> As part of the Comic-Con hype-cycle for Disney's Tron Legacy, which takes us back to the video game world of Tron next year, the company built a replica of Flynn's Arcade in San Diego's Gaslamp District. It was awesome.

Featuring a few dozen playable, perfectly preserved arcade games, a playable Space Paranoids—the fictional arcade game featured in the original Tron—and a totally sweet lightcycle from Tron Legacy, tucked away in a secret location.

The neon light work in Flynn's was fantastic, featuring signs for a handful of featured games, like Tron and Space Paranoids.
The line-up of games was so choice. I played Berzerk and Galaxian, but the list of games ran from Paperboy to Space Invaders to Off Road, a mix of (mostly) 80s era games.
Here's the Space Paranoids cabinet, one of the most popular titles at Flynn's.
Space Paranoids has the player control a tank with a joystick and trackball, fending off hovering Recognizers that have no problem stomping you into oblivion. It wasn't easy.
Here's a close up shot of Space Paranoids in action.
Neon!
The Flynn's Arcade set up had re-purposed the Tron movie poster into a promo poster for the game. From Encom, the makers of Space Paranoids, comes Tron.
This guy was attached to Tron the entire time. Probably for a very good reason...
At one point, the lights started to flicker, the jukebox started to cut out, and a hidden door opened up behind the Tron cabinet. The music changed from Billy Squire and Journey type tunes to something a bit more Daft Punk-like.
We were led into a dark hallway, featuring concept art for the lightcycles in Tron Legacy.
Then we saw the real thing, rotating slowly on a turntable, protected by security guards.
We took a lot of pictures of the thing. Too many probably.

<![CDATA[Tron Legacy Lightcycle Teaser Still Amazing]]> Disney teased its Tron sequel at last year's Comic-Con, but the blurry cam footage that sneaked out didn't show just how well the video game world's graphics had improved over the past 27 years.

Fortunately for Tron geeks and Jeff Bridges fans, Disney has released the Tron Legacy (nee TR2N) test footage, making us hungry for the eventual video game adaptation. Of course, given the nature of video games based on movies, previous Tron game attempts and the rumored developer of Tron Legacy, we'll keep those expectations throttled behind lightcycle speeds, just to be on the safe side.

Downloadable high definition trailers at the movie's teaser site.

<![CDATA[Daft Punk To Spin The Deadly Discs Of The Tron 2 Soundtrack]]> The planned Tron movie sequel (that may to borrow the name of the 2003 video game) has at least one aspect that's promising—a soundtrack from French electronic duo Daft Punk.

While the return to the video game world of Tron—which has been titled both Tron 2.0 and TR2N during its pre-production—is still shrouded in mystery, music mag Billboard has confirmed that Daft Punk will be scoring the sequel. The only footage of the movie we've seen so far was at 2008's San Diego Comic-Con, at which Disney previewed footage of the re-imagined light cycle racing game.

Which, by the way, looked boneriffic.

Billboard, by way of the occasionally reliable IMDB, pegs the Tron movie sequel for a 2011 release.

Given Disney's internal video game development capabilities, we don't doubt that a video game adaptation of Tron 2.0 is in the works in some capacity. We're just wondering how they're going to get around the naming mess.

<![CDATA[New Tron Game in the Works?]]> Disney's shutdown of two Utah studios may mean no Turok sequel, but plans for a new Tron game are still in the works, Variety reports.

Variety cites unnamed sources, and a spokesperson for Disney Interactive declined comment, but this isn't that hard to imagine. Tron is, after all, about video games, and the trailer for Tr2n (not a typo) sent a geeked-up Comic-Con crowd into a Wendy Carlos-induced frenzy. In other words, a natural tie-in delivered to a ravenous and captive audience.

When, though? The film isn't scheduled for release until 2011. "I'll go out on a limb and say Disney won't release it in the Winter, since that means the game will have a solid amount of production time," writes Ben Fritz. Wait a minute, rumor of a tie-in for a video game-based movie releasing two years from now. Gee, thanks for the confidential tip. Well, there it is anyway.

<![CDATA[Tron, Without The Icky Computer Graphics]]>

Having seen Tron at the drive-in as a wee lad, part of a double feature—it was paired with the pimps and prostitute-filled Vice Squad!—the craptastic Disney flick will always have a place in my heart. The fan-made version, a decidedly lo-fi affair, only makes the whole thing more endearing. It's cute as a button and makes me wish I had a copy of Tron to watch right now. It also makes me wish I had my own lightcycle.

<![CDATA[Tron To Triumphantly Return To Theaters In 2011 (And In 3D!)]]> It's been over twenty five years since the original Tron flick took drive-in theaters by storm, but it looks like Tron fever may be sweeping the nation again in the next decade. According to film site Dark Horizons, Disney has plans to release a 3D sequel to the video game film, using the same technology in previous 3D efforts such as Chicken Little and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The Hollywood Reporter previously wrote that Joseph Kosinski, currently said to be working on a Logan's Run remake, will be helming the project and that Lost writers Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz would write the script. We just hope they haven't abandoned Tron's spandex roots. That, and that the discs are still deadly.

<![CDATA[TRON 2 Coming to Theaters Eventually]]> Tron 2 is coming steps closer to neon actualization, as commercial director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to direct the film. The only other project on his list is the upcoming remake of Logan's Run, so it's tough to tell just how much he'll bastardize these original canons. The good news for Tron fans is the Steven Lisberger will be producing the film. He co-wrote and directed the original.

Still, it's difficult to see Tron as a remake. Either the film sticks to the original 80s-rrific setting, or it's updated with Tron being some hero in GTAIV with Jeff Bridges participating in time races to collect prostitutes. One approach seems disingenuous while the other seems, quite simply, horrible.

Then again, Tron was a pretentiously bad movie redeemed by incredible special effects and wonderful art direction. So it's not exactly Citizen Kane 2 that we're talking about here.

<![CDATA[Don Daglow, Licensing LOTR vs. TRON]]> As learned gamers, we usually scoff at movie licensed games, calling them the not-so-cheap way out for developers looking to cash in. But during a roundtable at GCDC today in Leipzig, Germany (Europe), Stormfront Studios' Don Daglow presented two tumultuous experiences with licensing movies: Lord of the Rings and TRON.

Obviously LOTR was in many ways a dream proposition...[but] when we started the project, everyone was saying, Peter Jackson??
But then...
[Producers] brought up to EA 16 minutes of the movie...After they saw that...everything had changed.
Lord of the Rings wasn't a multi-billion franchise yet; it wasn't a sure thing for publishers to bet on. But the problems with the license ended there. As for TRON...
25 years ago, the original movie Tron was pitched to us. We go up to BV studios...they had this promo why we should pay the rights for Tron. "Tron is going to revolutionize the way movies are made"
And Daglow's team was sold. Money, resources, whatever the team needed was theirs.
9 months later when the movie came out. The script wasn't very good. They ran out of time. It wasn't supposed to be black and white. Ultimately our team broke our hearts trying to build those games. We had no support. We were ignored. That can and still does happen today.
Not one moment of special effects was added to the film over those 9 months. Why? Daglow responds: because BV already had their paycheck virtually guaranteed—meaning they'd innovated enough.

And you thought movie licenses made things easy! Ha!

<![CDATA[Two Trons Confirmed For XBLA]]> Yet again the ESRB website ruins another perfectly good press release. As we had pretty much figured out, Disney Interactive is bringing not only the premier digital bloodsport Discs of Tron to Xbox Live this summer, but also one of the world's earliest minigame collections, simply called Tron. Tron contained all the good bits from the movie except for the disc competition - light cycles, tanks, random electric spiders and the MCP boss battle.

It's all part of the 25th Anniversary of Tron, the movie that helped my stepfather bond with me when I was just a little guy and convinced me to get an Intellivision Aquarius as my second computer so I could play Tron: Deadly Discs, the first of a long line of poor computer buying decisions on my part.

Check out the shots of the game in both regular and enhanced flavors below, and then hit the jump for the well-meaning press release that ESRB castrated.

The World Of Tron Prepares To Take On Challengers Once Again

Disney Interactive Studios Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Landmark Film "Tron" with the Re-Release of Tron and Discs of Tron - for Xbox LIVE Arcade

BURBANK, Calif. - May 3, 2007 - Since the early era of video games, "Tron" has been synonymous as both a landmark CGI film and the engaging arcade games inspired by that film. In honor of the 25th anniversary of "Tron," Disney Interactive Studios today announced the classic arcade games Tron and Discs of Tron will be re-released this summer through Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system. Xbox LIVE Arcade is the premier destination for digitally distributed, high-definition original and classic games. "The 'Tron' film has captured the imaginations of video game players and film fans for generations with its ground-breaking visuals and action-filled story," said Craig Relyea, vice president of marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. "The classic arcade games Tron and Discs of Tron are returning this summer through Xbox LIVE Arcade with new features and options for the film's 25th anniversary."

Each game includes the original version as well as an enhanced version with new graphics and audio features. Through Xbox LIVE Arcade, players can also compete in both games against another player in four online modes.

In Tron, which first appeared in arcades in 1982, players must complete four increasingly challenging game types to advance through levels. Players battle tank forces, engage in treacherous light cycle combat, attack the MCP cone and fight off grid bugs to enter the I/O tower.

Discs of Tron, a follow-up 1983 arcade game, enables players to fight Sark, the defender of Master Control Program, in one-on-one battles taking place in three-dimensional futuristic arenas. Players must move between platforms while throwing energy-charged discs at Sark and deflecting oncoming discs to avoid being "derezzed."

Published by Disney Interactive Studios and developed by Backbone Charlottetown, Tron and Discs of Tron are rated E for Everyone by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Both games will be available individually this summer exclusively on Xbox LIVE Arcade.

<![CDATA[Even More Tron For XBLA?]]> Remember last week's reveal of Discs of Tron for the Xbox 360, likely candidate for an Xbox Live Arcade release? Well, the ESRB has revealed another potential downloadable journey for the Electronic Gladiator by rating the original Tron for the 360, giving the game an E rating for Mild Fantasy Violence.

With the 25th anniversary of Disney's computer generated "classic" right around the corner, it looks like Buena Vista Games is looking to cash in with another Bally Midway retro game. Looks like a perfect fit for Mad Catz's Arcade GameStick.

I'll beat this dead horse one more time: why doesn't Sega get their ass in gear and make with the arcade ports? Everyone else is doing it.

<![CDATA[Discs of Tron, Prince of Persia For XBLA?]]> As we noted earlier this week, the original Prince of Persia was rumored as an upcoming Xbox Live Arcade release based on the game's appearance on the German software ratings board. Today, the ESRB has added Prince of Persia Classic to their list of rated games for the Xbox 360, giving the game a T for blood and violence descriptors.

Also recently added was an entry for Buena Vista Games' Discs of Tron for the Xbox 360, which scored an E rating. BVG has made no announcements for a game with that title, so one could assume that the game is an Xbox Live Arcade release of the 1983 Bally Midway classic arcade game. The game was previously ported to mobile phones and included as a bonus in the Game Boy Advance version of Tron 2.0: Killer App.

The New Dandyism column over at streetwear fashion blog High Snobiety has first pics of the glow-in-the-dark shoes in action. New Dandyism also teases with a promise of an "apparel hook-up" alongside the Reebok release, which had better glow, too, or we'll be pissed.

<![CDATA[Atari Flashback Tron Case Mod Wallows in Irrelevance]]>

I'll admit I'm into the whole PC casemod scene. I love some of the stuff people are doing with computers. But why would anyone want to take the time to mod an Atari Flashback? And if an excessive amount of time on your hands or the voices in your head convince you it's a good idea, why would you go with a Tron theme?

Reader Papaspurs, knowing my obsession with video game shoes, sent me a link to a pair of Tron shoes from Adidas. The Stan Smith Comforts show Tron on the tongue of the shoe and the Master Control Programmer on the footbed, whetever the hell that is. The sole? Inside the shoe? Sorry, I'm not up on my shoe jargon.

Unfortunately, the pictures show neither the tongue nor the footbed, though there is this nice shot of the side featuring two light cycles. They may not live up to the Space Invader shoes, but I still need to buy a pair. Yes, it is an illness. —Brian Crecente
