I am pretty sure that even though they were both Mario titles, New Super Mario Bros.Wii has way more of a nostalgia factor than Mario Galaxy.
When I went to Best Buy the other day, I saw countless people in their 30's and up stop at the NSMB.W station and go, "Hey I remember that" I am fairly sure that the same did not happen with Mario Galaxy.
Yeah that's my obligatory "c" option for the first choice.
@Terrorsaur - Five Six: How did Reggie's future telling abilities not come through for him??? Does his mean Pachter is right and Reggie is wrong (even though he works for Nintendo)? We're getting the Wii HD!?!?!?!??! OMG!
Looking at the 360/Ps3 numbers for MW2 and the numbers for AC2, it still looks like the install base for 360's in the US is pretty much double of the PS3. I wonder if the gap is ever going to close?
There always seems to be people on Home whenever I hop in to get my free loot or play the latest mini-game so it's not an utter failure. Although I always wonder what the majority of the people are doing there as they all just seem to be standing around. EA has some nice little mini-games like the poker room though, they really should expand it so more people can play.
Also I find it annoying the Home space for different regions is separated, they should just shove everyone together so there's more people around. I had to install the JPN PSN version of Home just to gawk at the Gundam statue this past summer, a waste of HD space :|
The only games I have ever been able to play in Home is Echochrome and "Hey, this looks like fun. Let's wait in line and NEVER PLAY THE FREAKING THING" game.
Sony, until you get over the idea of making your bowling alley as realistic as waiting in line for your shoes, it's always going to be a passing curiosity.
@CockroachMan: Why are you defending Reggie? None of his comments require defense. He stated that the total sales of New Super Mario Bros. would exceed individuals sales of COD:MW2 on 360 or PS3 over the holiday sales period (Black Friday - end of January). I can almost guarantee that it's going to punch the PS3 version in the face.
@phisheep: A smart move, but a cheap cop out it will be. He gets to pick and choose which platform he wants go up against and treat it independently, even though MW2's sales have been split by the fact that it's available for both consoles.
They should really try to integrate casual games more seamlessly with home.
If my PSN High Stakes Poker game became a room in Home accessible for those that purchased the game, I'd be playing that sucker a lot. Instead I'm stuck with hastily made ad ware that's time consuming to initiate.
It would make sense that NSMB will keep selling more over the season: MW2 is targeted more towards the core gamer that'll run to Gamestop day one to pick up their pre-orders, while NSMB targets a wider audience that doesn't necessarily need it the day it comes out. MW2 could still definitely outsell it, but the game's still not over.
@Boneszee2:
..everyone was looking at the press-shots, and thought the game was out already? Lot of people reviewed the game on the press-shots alone, after all. :p

Four months after the release of Umbrella Chronicles, Capcom released a statement stating that the company had shipped 1 million units to retailers.

Therefore, do not mistake its absence for failure.
(I, personally, think it will do worse than UC even with the larger install base of the console.)

As for Mario, allow me to throw another possibility into the ring:
In 2007, enthusiasts were thrilled to receive a new 3D Mario title while the broader audience was split.
In 2009, enthusiasts were relatively split on a 2D Mario while the broader audience was captivated (but still cautious with their dollars).

We didn't have a recession in 2007.

That's because so many Wii game players are casual game players.
Yes, "game players," not gamers.

Choose the PC as the platform you meant NSMBW would outsell!!
Do IT!!!!

Now we just need Akimbo 1887s nerfed.

Anyway, considering how Nintendo games usually sells.. NSMBWii should eventually sell more then MW2.. In a year or so.

Further in Reggie's defence, what he said was that NSMBWii would outsell *one* of the SKUs of MW2 come January NPD.
And it is only 500K behind the PS3 SKU.
Likely he will be right.

EDIT: And I won´t say exactly the same thing 5 mins later instead :P
