Why Home Should Not Be Shown At Game Shows
Home should not be shown at trade shows. Absolutely not. Not under any circumstances. Why? Because it is boring. Home is not a game. It's not even a user interface. It's a...thing. Once Sony get around to deciding what that actually is will probably be the time they decide to release it, but until then - and especially in the state it was in for my TGS demonstration - it should be kept as far from prying eyes (and hands) as possible. final fantasy versus xiii
Hi. My Name Is Noctis, But You Can Call Me Noct.
Final Fantasy game movie trailers are less game trailers and more movie trailers. So, the new Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer wouldn't seem that different. It is! According to the game's director, Tetsuya Nomura, the trailer features at least one scene rendered in the PS3 in real time. The scene is where main hero Noctis meets blonde-haired heroine Stella. If that wasn't enough (it never is), the main character uses a shortened nickname of his moniker which means "of the night". Says Nomura: More » -

What's Sega Bringing To TGS?
TGS is soon! Very, very soon. October 9-12, to be exact, and we'll be there from October 6 onwards! So get excited, will you? Look, Sega will be there, and they'll be showing a ton of stuff, big difference between this year and last year being they're showing a lot of stuff that's good. Like Yakuza 3 and Bayonetta on the PS3. And Sonic Unleashed. And some awful-looking PC MMO thing. And so damn many RPGs on the handheld systems that I'm not even going to bother highlighting them here. You'll find them - and everything else on show (and yes, we know, Madworld isn't there) - after the jump. More » -

Katamari Damacy Creator's Next Game Rolling To TGS 08
Tokyo Game Show kicks off next week and Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahahi's next effort, Nobi Nobi Boy, will be there. Unfortunately, the PlayStation 3 exclusive is slated to be shown in video form only. Hopefully that video will be more informative about the gameplay mechanics of Nobi Nobi Boy than Takahashi's previous demonstrations of the game. Namco Bandai lists the release date as still "undecided." More » -

What's Taito Bringing To TGS?
We know what Square Enix is bringing to this year's Tokyo Game Show. The Japanese publisher is armed with some big guns — Final Fantasy XIII, Dragon Quest IX and Star Ocean: The Last Hope — one of which will actually be playable. But what about its little subsidiary, Taito? It makes games too! More » -

Alan Wake To Appear At TGS For Sure (Maybe)
Remedy's Alan Wake was noticeably absent at E3 2008, a void left even more dark and encompassing by the inclusion of titles like You're In The Movies. Fear not, fans of mysterious mysteries, as the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista title is going to make its next public appearance at Tokyo Game Show at the latest, according to one web site. More » -

Tokyo Game Show 2008 Tickets Go On Sale July 17th!
Even though E3 is next week, it's never too early to talk about the Tokyo Game Show. So! For those interested in attending TGS 2008, good news: You'll be able to buy tickets beforehand. That's right, convenience stores across the country will be selling them via Electronic Ticket Pia for ¥1,000 (¥1,200 with tax). That's ten bucks plus tax in U.S. money. But what does that matter? You'll have to be in Japan if you want to buy tickets early. More » -

TGS 2008 Official Poster And Slogan (Both Kinda Stink)
The Tokyo Game Show has announced its official poster and slogan. The poster (pictured) features sayings in various languages. The English ones are "Go for it!", "Fantastic!!" and "Here's a break!" Pretty sure I've never said "Here's a break!" in my life. Like ever. The official slogan doesn't get much better. It is: More » -

Julian Eggebrecht Defends Lair. Again.
Factor 5 honcho Julian Eggebrecht must be exhausted from constantly "defending" his company's poorly received PLAYSTATION 3 title Lair and its hit-or-miss SIXAXIS controls. G4 caught up with the Dragon's Lair fanboy at Tokyo Game Show to get one more justification out of Mr. Eggebrecht whose game has been retitled Rise From Lair in Japan. I respect what Factor 5 was trying to do, but trying to target gamers who aren't hardcore with a PS3 game? Simply puzzling. More » -

TGS Attendance Numbers Padded Nicely By Press
With the hearts and minds of Japanese gamers won over by Nintendo and its casual-skewing software, this years Tokyo Game Show saw those in the nation issuing a collective "meh." The press? They had to show up, helping to pad this year's attendance figures by an extra 30,000 for a combined total of 193,040 over four days. By comparison, last year's three day show pulled in an impressive 192,411 over just three days. More » -

TGS Attendance Drops Like A Rock
Nintendo may be expanding the video game market in Japan, but their refusal to attend the biggest gaming expo in their homeland is doing nothing to help out this year's numbers for Tokyo Game Show. In 2006, TGS pulled in some 192,411 attendees over the course of three days. The first public day last year saw some 84,823 gamers stink up the halls of the Makuhari Messe. This year? Only 64,795. We won't know the final figure for Sunday for a while, but based on the feeling that it's much more manageable to walk the show floor, expect less than yesterday's figure. More » -

Treasure Too Busy With Xbox Live For PlayStation Network
Clean-cut Treasure boss man Masato Maegawa talked to 1UP just before the kick off of Tokyo Game Show 07, putting a shine on details for every upcoming Treasure game. The recently announced Xbox Live Arcade Ikaruga remake, for example, is taking up too much of the developer's resources, putting a hold on the unnamed Xbox 360 shooter that's said to be in the vein of its most famous shmups, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. Unfortunately for those in the PLAYSTATION 3 camp, Treasure isn't working on the PlayStation Network, devoting their resources to XBLA development. More » -

Major Nelson Misses TGS
Man do I feel bad for Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb right now. Seems he was all set for his flight to Tokyo to attend TGS when he discovered his passport was missing. No passport equals no Tokyo, and as anyone who has ever tried can attest, getting a replacement passport on short notice is no easy task. Thankfully both TriXie and VideoMonkey will be there to cover the event for Xbox.com, but Larry will be heading back to Seattle tomorrow to spend the week catching up on work.As a public service, I offer this advice: Be very careful with your Passport. And go make a photocopy of it right now and keep it in a safe place so you can have all the details handy if you need to get a replacement.
Having never been outside of the continental U.S. myself, I've heard nothing but horror stories involving passports. When I finally get my own, I am having it surgically grafted to my chest. And that's one to grow on. More » -

Square-Enix And The Closed Mega Theater Of Doom
Final Fantasy XIII is a long way off. We're placing bets on a 2009 release in Japan. Those of us attending Tokyo Game Show this year won't see much of it, that is, unless we wait in painfully long lines to watch the game's trailers. Square-Enix announced today via its official TGS 2007 web site that it would be showing trailers for Dragon Quest IX, Last Remnant, Final Fantasy XI, Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII in two theaters. For fans of the Squenix brand of software, seeing the last two will require marathon style queues. They're only being shown in the company's Closed Mega Theater. So bring your copies of Crisis Core, kids. You're going to need something to keep you quietly occupied in line for a couple hours. More » -

Bumpy Trot 2 Trots 2 PS3 At TGS
NeoGAF member "Massive Attack" used his falcon-like web site watching skills to dig up a tidbit of PLAYSTATION 3 news for next week's Tokyo Game Show. It appears that R-Type developer Irem will be showing a sequel to the original Bumpy Trot for Sony's next-gen console at the Makuhari Messe. While the original Western mech game, which came to the U.S. of A as Steambot Chronicles, didn't exactly light up the sales charts, it was fairly well received. More » -

Kaz Will Kick Off Tokyo Game Show
Meet the new boss. Hopefully he won't be as dull as the old boss in Tokyo Game Show terms. With Ken Kutaragi for all intents and purposes disowned by the PlayStation family, new SCEI president Kaz Hirai will take his place in kicking off the TGS 07 festivities. While Kutaragi's hour-plus keynote at TGS '06 focused on networking, global mapping data and the Folding@Home application, there's no telling what Kaz will speak about this September. I just hope we get another Afrika trailer this year (and better seats). More » -

Microsoft TGS Press Briefing Reactions
Ashcraft and I sat through the 100-minute press briefing, right up front, only to be nearly deafened by the loudspeakers cranked to 11 no more than fifteen feet away from us. Love, Shibuya Style
Team TGS: Weekend Special Ops (me) landed in Tokyo yesterday, but, despite having many many hours at my disposal that could have been dedicated to shopping for video games, I instead decided to take my travel companion to Womb last night for some intense partying (read: excessive drinking). The area is thick with "love hotels" that offer a night's stay or some "rest" at a discounted rate. Fortunately for us fetishist types, they also provide useful amenities, so that if you're so inclined, you can expand your sexual horizons. Want to "rest" with one of the local human petri dishes while she plays Pikmin in a maid outfit? You're covered. -

Tokyo Game Show Theme Announced! zzz...zzz...zzz...
Drum roll please... The official theme of the 2007 Tokyo Game Show is "New excitement. New feeling. New age." (Shin Koufun. Shin Kandou. Shin Jidai.) Great, huh? Wow, it's must have taken them all of fifteen minutes to come up with that doozy. I cannot wait for this year's TGS, which will be just like this year's E3 minus the big news. No, strike that. Metal Gear Solid 4 Showing at Tokyo Game Show
More Metal Gear Solid 4 details will likely be revealed at this year's Tokyo Game Show. Konami has said they plan to demonstrate the next episode of the stealth action game at the convention, but haven't said what exactly will be on show. I suppose it's possible that they will just show the nearly non-existent teaser that was show at E3, but I seriously doubt it. I'm expecting at least some more details about how the last in the franchise will likely depart from the sneak theme. More » -

Tokyo Gameshow Gives Next-Gen to the People
This year's Tokyo Game Show will be the true unveiling of the next-gen consoles. There won't be any diminutive Hollywood stars guarding the Xbox 360 or PS3s tucked away in glass cases, no at this show the next-gen is open to the people. Both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will be open to the public and fully playable. Though, which games exactly will be available on the new consoles is still up in the air. More »
